    Join Daniel Norton OnSet as he makes some simple beautiful portraits with a less commonly used light shaper, the Lantern. The great thing about a lantern is it throws light everywhere creating a gentle and soft light that looks great on any subject that sits for your portrait session.

    First. Great video. Just got my Flashpoint R2-T II for Nikon yesterday. It is really nice, and easy to use with my left hand while my right hand holds the camera. And the adjustment wheel under the rear left corner is a great position and works great.

    They have a wonderful warm diffuse quality. You don't have to spend a mint, you can use the inexpensive paper Chinese lanterns. Cinematographer Philippe Rousselot used masses of them for atmospheric films such as "Interview With the Vampire".

      Jonathan Langsner flat front. No difference as long as your source fills the lantern evenly and this light does

  • @jimatyeo
    @jimatyeo 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Excellent video as we have come to expect from Marissa and Daniel. I notice that this is indeed a fun light source but there seems to be a bit of splashy specularity on her forehead and upper part of her nose and catch light isn't as nice as some.. She is still stunningly, breathtakingly gorgeous though. Also Daniel you are going against what I hammer into my advance students about buying and using a tripod that you do not have to raise the center column much because in a sense it then becomes a monopod. Of course in the studio with the flash effectively becoming the shutter speed, it doesn't matter as much. However when I tell my guys to watch your vids they always bring up but Daniel is always cranking his center post all the way up. :) Hope one day we get to see Ms. Marissa in a smash hit romantic comedy. She's as lovely as any female actress in Hollywood today and she has a better personality that 80% of them. All the best to the whole gang. Oh and sense you are from Fla. Go Gators! :)

    • @DanielNortonPhotographer
      @DanielNortonPhotographer 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Catch lights are the last thing I think/worry about, but if they are your thing, perhaps this is not the way to go. As my tripod is able to hold around 25lbs and my camera is maybe 5 - it’s pretty sturdy on just the neck, I find raising the legs constantly to be time consuming when making videos, but certainly on commercial projects I keep it lower. - neither of us are from FL though 😊

      Hey there timzanation, I would go with the Matthews Preemie Baby Double Riser Aluminum Stand. It’s just shy of 6 feet, below $200, strong, easy to break down & travels well. If you need it taller, Matthews also sells an extension for the stand as well. Hope this helps!

    Hi Daniel... some follow up questions... how different is the lantern to a translucent shoot through deep umbrella? How does the size of the lantern effect the light?... how big is this effect? For a fill light how would an on axis profoto a1 with the little dome compare to the v-flats? Thank you...

    • @DanielNortonPhotographer
      @DanielNortonPhotographer 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      noah wood it’s less directional than a shot through umbrella and doesn’t “waste” as much light. Bigger lantern softer light. Same as any other source. An A1 is a 2 inch source - Vflats are 4x8 ... softer, more coverage - though less fine control

    That’s expensive because it’s made for continuous tungsten lighting, it should be able to take the heat. With strobes you can even use a paper lantern, if your won’t using modeling tungsten lamps. Very inexpensive, just cover the bottom hole with more diffusion.

  • @jeremylavine
    @jeremylavine 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Is there any particular reason to use this lantern over a round softbox, other than the "cool" factor? Is the light it produces any different? It's hard to tell without a side-by-side comparison.
    Do you just use this baby blue paper backdrop in addition to white/gray/black backgrounds, or do you have a bunch of different colors? I assumed you chose the baby blue in the previous video you used it in to contrast with the orange sweater the model was wearing, but I suppose blue, like gray, works with pretty much everything. Any chance you'd do a video on selecting a background color - e.g. based on the model's skin tone, the color of the outfit, and the desired mood - and comparing the seamless paper backdrops against Oliphant-style hand-painted canvas backdrops (looks like Adorama only sells ones from Savage), Lastolite-style collapsible backgrounds, and other background types?

    • @DanielNortonPhotographer
      @DanielNortonPhotographer 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The throw and coverage of the light are different than a box, it gives a bit less control and more incidental fill light. I chose blue for her eyes and it looks nice with the jacket as well. - choosing a background is much like choosing your clothing - a personal style often prevails.

    • @drewrobertson6286
      @drewrobertson6286 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jeremy Lavine, from the looks of your question you are in need of some colour theory help. There is sooo much to learn that it would take hours of videos to comprehend. I would get a book called Theory of Colours by the German author Johann Goethe. In cases like yours, a book will be far more beneficial than a video. I have the book The art of color by ITTEN, but it is a very dry book. I would also study the print works of Erté, the water colour paintings of Carol Grigg & the works of the colorist Lynn Varley. I think with the book, & studying those artists you will see what colours work well for light & airy, good colours for matching with skin tones, colours for mood, & get ideas for period style photography. I hope this helps, if not you directly, someone else.

    • @jeremylavine
      @jeremylavine 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@drewrobertson6286 I appreciate the recommendations, I think basic color theory can be very helpful, and think old paintings are a great reference, but I think there are also tons of considerations specific to photography with modern cameras, lighting, and post-processing tools, current fashion, and the range of backdrop colors and materials available at the moment, that are beyond the domain of traditional color theory and comparisons with old paintings, and a video by someone who really knows what he's doing and has ready access to a wide variety of backdrop types, with explanations of why he would choose a particular backdrop for a particular scenario, and with some side-by-side comparisons of different backdrops, would also be very helpful.
