  • The secret to getting the perfect headshot is communication. On the day of your headshot session you, as the photographer, need to focus on the subject and not on your camera or lighting. So keeping things simple but flexible is a smart idea.
That’s where photographer Gavin Hoey can help. In this video, he shares three quick and easy headshot lighting set-ups that only use one light. Along the way, Gavin shares some top tips on how to avoid shiny skin, when and where to use a reflector and perhaps most usefully, what should you do with your subject’s hands!
The three set-ups start with a single Flashpoint XPOLR300 flash before Gavin adds a silver reflector into the mix. But if flash isn’t your thing, Gavin has you covered as his third lighting set-up is all about playing to the strengths of LED or continuous light. That means, shallow depth of field photos and making your subject's eyes look bright and super colorful, all thanks to a single Nanlite FS-200.
This short video is packed full of real-world photography tips aimed at making sure your photography doesn’t get in the way of communication with your subject.

I just love this channel: as model and cosplayer it helps so much to understand the work of a photograph so much better and so I can be a better model / cosplayer myself. What Ii would love to see here a few times more often would be like cosplay shootings, setting up a set with a few more props or videos about locations (what makes a location great - especially outdoor).

Always fun to see Hoey working his tiny studio to great effect. Yes (text introduction), communication is #1. In another industry this was my mantra: your work is 80% communication (with client and their stakeholders) and in this case, the other 20% was internal communication. Run a more than 1 person studio and it's the same.
"One light" - I would argue that the reflector is a light too as it is actively positioned and angled, rather than passively used like a wall or floor.
The communication being so important is why "recognition AI AF" has become very important to me. It allows me to not look through the camera and maintain contact with the sitter. Way back, with the Hasselblad or large format, this was a completely different more of operation. There's still no need to spray and pray because of the learning effects of way back, but the new technology can help a lot.

A good question for this subject:
I got many vintage, and also some new, manual lenses.
I'd really like to use them when I do self portrait, but I can't find a way to focus properly.

if youre serious about doing a 'self-headshot' tutorial PLEASE DO! i have shot some of myself but even with pre-focus, or standing directly in front of the lens and starting the shot with focus etc, and shooting at 5.6 i still often get out of focus shots. (not that you can teach the camera to focus properly!)

    • @GavinHoey
      @GavinHoey 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

Hi Helga. To avoid shadows it's not about the distance from the background but the angle of the light. Elevated and acute side angles of light can remove shadows (on head shots) on backgrounds at surprisingly close distances. On camera flash will throw a shadow onto the background even in a large studio!

Focal length has no impact on compression, it's one of those huge half truths that photographers repeat without checking (something I was guilty of for far to long).
Lenses ONLY crop, it's DISTANCE that compresses... and I was probably 10 feet back.

Question.....how do you clean your diffusion material on your softbox, do you put them in the washer, or do you hand wash them?
Oh and is normal wash detergent suitable? 🤔

Hi Marcus. The "fabric" is usually pretty tough, so I usually try a scrub with a damp cloth followed with water and soap and if all else fails a cold hand wash.

You are definitely one that I keep coming back to because you make everything look so damn simple.... Question though. The white balance and the color card. I'd like to see more on how that works. I could google it or search youtube but I think I'd rather have the Hoey version of it. And... why are those color cards so damn expensive....? Look forward to a response...

Thanks for the kind words. Checkout this video for a detailed look at how and when I use the full Colorchecker Passport swatches th-cam.com/video/D_NVCS7sUPY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=WIRcPG7bjYg6ZI7p As for why they're are the price they are, is any thing in photography ever cheap 😏

Hi, would I be able to use a single Godox V1 to achieve similar results?

When shooting against a white backdrop, how would you suggest to maintain the white? When I was practicing, my white backdrop was turning greyish blue. I had my WB set relatively correct. I've seen others using a small flash set behind the subject and pointed toward the backdrop. Do you think this would be the solution?

Hi Gavin! Can you show us how you prepare portrait photos for sending to clients? What resolution do you use? In which formats do you save them? What color space do you work in? And how do you specifically send files to clients? On a flash drive? Via email? Or through cloud services? If possible, share details about this, as there is limited information available on the internet. Thank you!

Everything is virtual nowadays in my world. Resolutions are either what the client asked for or as high as I can supply.
