- In this video, we take a look at one of my favorite light modifiers, the lantern softbox. Why is this such a useful production tool, when and why should you use one yourself, we answer all of that in this video overview.

Thanks for making this video! I’m changing my setup for food content creation and started looking into the lantern soft box.
The kitchen and b-roll section were the exact setups I was curious about improving. Very helpful 👏🏾👏🏾
Food content is somewhere a lantern softbox would really shine. Harsh lighting has its place, but probably not in a kitchen haha. Setting up and shooting some of the A/B comparisons in the kitchen I immediately noticed how much more pleasing the food and everything looked when lit with a lantern softbox and if you take your time and really dial in the lighting and environment, it wouldn't take much to get some great looking shots and video content!
Thanks for the demo - this is perfect for something I`m working on!
That's awesome!! It has been a great tool over the years, hope it helps you out on the project!
Great video, very clear/concise, thank you for sharing friend!
Appreciate that!! Hope you found it helpful!!
would you recommend the aputure 60d with a lantern softbox or the GVM bi-colour 100w lighting kit (also has a lantern softbox)? I will be using the set up as an upgrade to my ring light for self tape auditions. The noise output is a bit relevant but I am mostly after soft flattering lighting :)
Depends on your needs. I assume you mean the Amaran 60d and 60x? The Aputure LS 60d does not have a bowens mount and is designed to be a focusable flood light. Between the Amaran 60d (probably would go with the 60x to get bi-color tunability) and GVM bi-color 100W it is going to come down to your need for light output. The GVM is going to output more being a 100W fixture and comes as a complete kit with light stand, light head, lantern modifier, everything you need which is nice. With the Amaran you will need to pick up a light stand and lantern softbox separately, and at 65W the output will be slightly less. I personally use a 30W GVM Monolight and find the output to be more than sufficient in most circumstances. Amaran lights have impressive build quality, for myself personally I might spend the extra $50 and pick up the Amaran 100x S as it is going to give more headroom in terms of available light output, but I think both of the lights you mentioned will be a huge step up from a ring light in terms of quality. Hope that helps!
thank you for such a thorough response! And yes i meant the amaran, i will be using a fairly small mostly white room and have tried neewer softboxes recently but they were extremely unflattering at every distance haha. I have considered doing 2 gvm led barn door panels instead but i think either the gvm kit or the amaran bi colour will be best! @@JasonPischke
@@chloeee6789 Either of those two lights with a lantern softbox is going to give you a much more flattering look, the light wrap of a lantern is very pleasing on the face. Because of the size and weight of a lantern softbox I am leaning toward the GVM for your use case, but the Amaran lights really are high quality as well!
