  • Dive into the world of portrait lighting with Pye Jirsa, talented photography educator, as he unravels the setups behind the five primary lighting patterns in our latest MagMod TH-cam video.
This comprehensive tutorial isn't just about mastering techniques; it's about understanding the storytelling depth each pattern can add to your portraits, from the flattering effects of flat lighting to the dramatic shadows cast by split lighting.
The different lighting patterns discussed include flat, butterfly (or paramount), loop, Rembrandt, and split lighting. Whether you're wielding a Canon, Nikon, Sony or any camera of your choice, coupled with our game-changing MagMod Pro 42 Octa, this video is your ticket to elevating your photography game.
Pye demystifies each lighting setup with practical demonstrations, ensuring you grasp the nuances of short vs. broad lighting, and how these techniques can slim or broaden your subject's appearance. Ever wondered why Rembrandt lighting is the go-to for drama and depth? Or how to achieve that iconic shadow under the nose with butterfly lighting? This video covers it all, including why certain lighting patterns work better for different scenarios, from edgy fashion shoots to soft, elegant wedding portraits.
We're also giving away a free downloadable lighting guide, created by Trevor Dayley and Pye Jirsa, packed with tips, tricks, and lighting patterns to inspire your next shoot.

Absolutely brilliant - exactly what I was looking for thank you as a refresher - I will say this:
This is the best channel without exception for flash. I wasn't sure that I would warm to Pye, I feared he would be too cool and smug, (as many other's working in this medium very often are, I name no names) but he turns out to be an excellent teacher, very down to earth, explains everything very very well, very clearly. Not a moment of patronising showboating, examples for everything. The models / talent (what ever is the correct name) are obviously top professionals, and clearly he has a good (working) relationship with them (unlike many others working in this medium, again I name no names).
This is the only channel anyone needs to learn flash photography, look no further. You have arrived.

Fantastic demo/tutorial. Also, amazing audio and a very nice "stage" in which to present. The beauty of this video, besides great educational content, is the fact that the presenter is SO comfortable with his presentation... no one had to jump-cut the crap out of the piece. Great flow and a very nice, no BS presentation. It held my attention from beginning to end.

I've seen a LOT of people attempt to explain lighting patterns...
    Seriously... A LOT!
On TH-cam, at photography trade shows, even a professor teaching photography at a university a lifetime ago.
Not one of them managed to explain the subject as clearly and without the use of (very poor) metaphors!
Well done, this was a perfect teaching video, and I've been able to send this as a resource for people asking me questions about lighting patterns.

I don't generally just like all of Pye's videos in terms of their style and language, so I'm not a natural fan. But ... this one is .... just very good! Logical storyline. Visuals and demonstrations to support it. Well-made slides to highlight key points. Nice anecdotal touches. Gear well within the reach of amateurs. A (beautiful) model with a great look to support demonstrations. Well filmed. Pleasant audio, pace, language. Great job, team (+Pye!).

Very nice and direct (no pun intended) explanation of some fundamental lighting concepts. Of course, this was all with a single light, which is great, but now you could start to fill this out with companion videos using two or three lights. This could be the start of a nice collection or series of video on lighting that I think a lot of people would love to have access to. Other may have already commented in this below, so please forgive the repetition. Great job!
