- Dive into the world of portrait lighting with Pye Jirsa, talented photography educator, as he unravels the setups behind the five primary lighting patterns in our latest MagMod TH-cam video.
This comprehensive tutorial isn't just about mastering techniques; it's about understanding the storytelling depth each pattern can add to your portraits, from the flattering effects of flat lighting to the dramatic shadows cast by split lighting.
The different lighting patterns discussed include flat, butterfly (or paramount), loop, Rembrandt, and split lighting. Whether you're wielding a Canon, Nikon, Sony or any camera of your choice, coupled with our game-changing MagMod Pro 42 Octa, this video is your ticket to elevating your photography game.
Pye demystifies each lighting setup with practical demonstrations, ensuring you grasp the nuances of short vs. broad lighting, and how these techniques can slim or broaden your subject's appearance. Ever wondered why Rembrandt lighting is the go-to for drama and depth? Or how to achieve that iconic shadow under the nose with butterfly lighting? This video covers it all, including why certain lighting patterns work better for different scenarios, from edgy fashion shoots to soft, elegant wedding portraits.
We're also giving away a free downloadable lighting guide, created by Trevor Dayley and Pye Jirsa, packed with tips, tricks, and lighting patterns to inspire your next shoot.

Pye and Kiara are the best team for photography! KEEP THESE TWO COMING BACK! I NEED MORE!
Pye's very soft and low key approach to teaching makes it so enjoyable to watch.
Pye Jirsa is probably thee best photographer teacher I have come across
This has to be the most clear to the point informative video on lighting patterns I have seen yet. Great job man! More more more!
Thank you so much! So glad you enjoyed the video!
This is how photographic tutorials should be taught. Thank you very much.🙏
Ever since i started following you as a tutor, my skill as a creative has greatly increased
Such a great tutorial. Simple, broken down, well explained.
Best lighting tutorial I have seen and I absolutely love the way you teach Pye. I always learn a lot from your videos.
Isn’t he amazing!
Love the simplicity of the explanations. None of this long drawn out things for no reason to not get to the point!
Pye is a master teacher. Clear. Consice. If Pye is on watch, learn and practice it.
I could just listen to Pye all day 💚 What a voice 😍
Thank you for this video. I particularly love its clarity, its simplicity and its aesthetics. Wonderful outfit and makeup, too!
This is the first tutorial on the subject I see with ideas when the different portrait lights are a good choice.
You folks rock!
Just When you think you’ve seen it all. Then Pye comes up and boom! Pye is the KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) Master. It can never be simpler and effective than this.
I LOVE THE WAY HE MAKES EVERYTHING EASIER TO LEARN!
I TRULY ENJOY PYE AND KIARA. PYE IV’E BEEN FOLLOWING YOU FROM DAY ONE AND YOUR ONE YOU ARE THE MOST WELL ROUNDED AND AMAZING PHOTOGRAPHER ON TH-cam, AND BELIEVE ME… I FOLLOW A LOT OF FANTASTIC PHOTOGRAPHS HERE ON TH-cam. KIARA SUPER DOPE AS WELL. KEEP UP ALL OF THE AMAZING WORK PYE AND KIARA!
Absolutely brilliant - exactly what I was looking for thank you as a refresher - I will say this:
This is the best channel without exception for flash. I wasn't sure that I would warm to Pye, I feared he would be too cool and smug, (as many other's working in this medium very often are, I name no names) but he turns out to be an excellent teacher, very down to earth, explains everything very very well, very clearly. Not a moment of patronising showboating, examples for everything. The models / talent (what ever is the correct name) are obviously top professionals, and clearly he has a good (working) relationship with them (unlike many others working in this medium, again I name no names).
This is the only channel anyone needs to learn flash photography, look no further. You have arrived.
As a professional photographer it was a great reminder about the type's of lighting patterns, great job
I’m just glad you gave her the props for being so jacked! I was coming here for it😂
Simple, descriptive to the point and why each works the way they do. Thanks to you and the lovely Boricua!
Great job always to the DYNAMIC DUOS!!!!
Fantastic demo/tutorial. Also, amazing audio and a very nice "stage" in which to present. The beauty of this video, besides great educational content, is the fact that the presenter is SO comfortable with his presentation... no one had to jump-cut the crap out of the piece. Great flow and a very nice, no BS presentation. It held my attention from beginning to end.
Very useful tutorial, thank you
I've seen a LOT of people attempt to explain lighting patterns...
Seriously... A LOT!
On TH-cam, at photography trade shows, even a professor teaching photography at a university a lifetime ago.
Not one of them managed to explain the subject as clearly and without the use of (very poor) metaphors!
Well done, this was a perfect teaching video, and I've been able to send this as a resource for people asking me questions about lighting patterns.
This tutorial is perfect for explaining the different lighting techniques.
That’s what we were hoping for. Pye nailed it!
Awesome video and explanation Pye! Thank you for sharing. Great job Kiara on the posing.
Amazing vid!
Clear and useful! Thank you!
Pye is too good at this shit man, this is quality content.
Another outstanding Pye lighting lesson! Many thanks.
Great work amazing well explained as always 🎉
I really love your lighting videos!
This is one of the most informative lighting videos that I’ve watched. Helps me a great deal I use off camera flash extensively!! Thank you Pye!
Pye Jirsa is an outstanding teacher, so I’m here for all the content. Whether it’s something I already know or not. Still going to stay tuned.
Agree!
Love this. Thank you!
Super clear with just enough detail.
Very Nice Video. Great tips on lighting.
I don't generally just like all of Pye's videos in terms of their style and language, so I'm not a natural fan. But ... this one is .... just very good! Logical storyline. Visuals and demonstrations to support it. Well-made slides to highlight key points. Nice anecdotal touches. Gear well within the reach of amateurs. A (beautiful) model with a great look to support demonstrations. Well filmed. Pleasant audio, pace, language. Great job, team (+Pye!).
Stunning model and great explanation on lighting and how each works im new to flash and will help a lot
Nice job explaining as usual, you are a favorite teacher of our craft.
Thank you for the video. the explanation is easy to understand and follow
very cool i love learning new techniques
Just WOW ! Thanks for the quick guide!
Very useful.. to the point tutorial.. thanks a lot ❤❤
You the man, Pye! Absolutely love your vids
Excellent overview
That's a very useful video Pye, come back with more! e.g. A real photoshoot with any model with one light setup and creating different styled images in studio just by changing the light position and maybe model outfit.
Very informative. Thank you!
great job. excellent information.
This is an amazing lighting tutorial. Very educative. Much appreciated.
One of the best tutorials on the subject. Thank you!
Very nice and direct (no pun intended) explanation of some fundamental lighting concepts. Of course, this was all with a single light, which is great, but now you could start to fill this out with companion videos using two or three lights. This could be the start of a nice collection or series of video on lighting that I think a lot of people would love to have access to. Other may have already commented in this below, so please forgive the repetition. Great job!
Very helpful and enjoyable tutorial to watch and learn. Appreciate the time you take to explain the aspects of what equipment you are using, the settings and what to look for in lighting the subject. Please continue with more.
MagMod, Thanks for a most informative simplified lighting information, keep the good content coming.

Great breakdown of lighting techniques. For future videos I'ld like to see Kiara use props in her/your shoots. Whatever you guys feel like playing around with. She has an elegant warrior woman look. You guys could add another dimension to your shoots with the use of props. Stay Creative and keep up the great work.
Very nice and useful tutorial! Well done!👏👏👏

Great teaching. Would be great to see 'hard' portraits with the sphere, bounce and grid - which is what many have on location. Thanks again!
