About two years ago, I adopted a Chihuahua with a collapsing trachea cough. I started giving him Cosequin, which is a cartilage builder. It is sold over-the-counter and has dosage instructions on the bottle. It took about a month or two to notice a difference in his coughing but after about a year he had stopped coughing altogether. I still give him Cosequin and he is still doing great, with no coughing.

I had one dog dying of this and now her daughter suffering from it. I would say this - it is horrible and at the same time, life. The old dog died in my arms of it when she suffocated. Completely frightening and horrendous but I can think of worse. She panted, laid down and went unconscious very, very fast. We never made it to the vet. If it happens again I will not even try to get there just hold my dog, pet her and talk to her as she goes. Mamma dog was 15 years and seven months when she died and her daughter is now 15 years and six months. I wished some veterinarian could have told me to begin with how to strengthen cartilage so that we could have done it the entire dog life. Keep strong all you people with dogs with this problem.

Dogs who’s condition can be successful medical management 12:00
If your dog has a collapsing trachea her distress can become so severe that can turn blue & collapse. If your dog have severe distress is an medical emergency needs to be taken to the nearest clinic 12:13
The BEST OPTION is to slowdown the progression of the desease by being proactive - 12:34 which means beginning a cartilage support protocol & high risk breathes as early as possible - 12:45 STARTING a cartilage support protocol at 3 years of age is one way to help prevent trachea cartilage DETERIORATION - 12:56 An other option is to ADDRESSING the problem immediately when you very first noticing the symptoms before progression of the desease occurs, that’s a great way TO AVOID THE SEVERE DEGENERATION IN THE FIRST PLACE.

Thank you for the informative video. My cocker spaniel mix has cushing's and had surgery to remove fatty tumors that were impairing his ability to rest and walk. He has developed a cough that sounds like he is inhaling and trying to suck air in through his nose. The vet didn't inspect the trachea but gave medicine for reflux disease as along with the noisy inhaling he is swallowing frequently and positions himself with his chin raised on a pillow. I know the fireplace bothers him - he leaves the room when I start it up and returns when the smoke has dissipated. Question - what were the natural remedies and will they interfere with the Trilostane given him for Cushing's? Thank you!

Thank you, Dr. Becker. Lots of great info in this video! My elderly dog was recently diagnosed with early stage heart disease and collapsing trachea, with very few symptoms (yet). I'm going to start some of these natural preventatives that you mention (also for my younger dog!) and hopefully delay the progression of the diseases a bit. Of course, I will consult my vet, too! We've already started on some Cosequin for joint health. And following your book (Real Food for Healthy Dogs and Cats) has really helped me improve their diet!

But he still coughs at times - especially when gets up from lying down. Vet says to use it as needed but he needs it at some point every day! I just wondered if anybody else had used hydrocodone?....

I know this post is a year old but I can tell you I give my Chihuahua hydrocodone. The vet recommended 2 to 3 times a day. I give it to him as needed which is often 1 to 2 times a day but some days he does not need it. His coughing spurts come and go in waves, some weeks he's great others he's not but overall I find the hydrocodone works well for him. He also takes vetmedin for his heart.

We use stanozolol to treat tracheal collapse. It is a 3 month course and often reverses or vastly improves the degree of collapse. The drug is not known for many negative side effects in dogs (as opposed to humans who take it in large doses to enhance performance) and because it is not a management tool, but an actual treatment, it is just a one course and done thing. Interactions with other drugs (including corticosteroids) is negligible, so they can remain on current meds while starting the treatment, then slowly, one at a time wean off them as they are no longer needed. Since we began using this in the old pugs in our rescue, about 6 years ago, we have not lost a single pug to tracheal collapse. It will not help concurrent similar airway issues, like laryngeal paralysis, elongated soft palate, chronic bronchitis, etc. and it cannot widen a congenitally narrow trachea, common in yorkies and some other breeds, but it DOES wonders for a true collapsed trachea in most dogs.

Please do not buy a dog from a breeder, they are the leading cause for why so many dogs have major health issues. Get a dog from a rescue shelter since we have more than enough dogs that need homes and it's an inaccurate statement to say that these dogs are more predisposed to health conditions. You really can't say that over picking a dog from a breeder. Think of those in need and not about contributing to the problem.
