At 81 yrs I had this problem, gerd and constant mucus in my throat. My solution is a keto diet with very low carbs and one meal a day at 11am no snacks. Apple cider vinegar about an hour or so before I eat. Exercise walking 3 miles a day for 6 days a week along with very light weights 8lbs dumbbells work out 30 mins. Keep in mind age makes this exercise a little more difficult as the years go on.. God bless you all!

I used to suffer with this issue BIG-TIME. The symptoms I experienced (lump in throat, excess mucus, and regurgitation...god the regurgitation was awful) were so bad that they affected my sleep greatly. I would wake up after a "night's rest" feeling like I had slept for 20, 30 minutes tops. It honestly made life very difficult for me, and I was often at my wits end for what to do besides using antacids or PPI. I mean, for god sakes, I was 21 at the time, why does a 21 year old need antacids? But in a way, having this condition may have helped me take greater control of my health. At some point I was so fed up that I actually did some research into the root causes (like Dr. Berg) suggested and found that it could be diet-related, or it could be due to lack of stomach acid...etc. I guess I was a lot more naive then so it took me much longer to come to the conclusion that it was a problem I could fix through lifestyle modification rather than strictly medication.
What I found, for me personally, was that food definitely had an impact. I used to consume a lot of protein powder after working out, and it certainly wasn't high quality. I cut that out, along with dairy. That provided a slight improvement. I then found out about the Betaine-HCL (Not sure if it was through Dr. Berg, can't remember) and I bought that as well. Started using that and again, after two weeks or so, saw more minor improvements. Well, that gave me a lot of hope. I tried to make my diet as clean as possible, just for one month, to see how well I could benefit. In addition, I began consuming a LOT of fermented foods, specifically kefir and sauerkraut. That seemed to have a HUGE benefit. Lastly, I also considered the fact that my gut lining was probably damaged due to terrible diet, medications, you name it. So I was taking "L-glutamine" for a good period of time in order to remedy that. That felt like a much slower change over time, but I do think it had positive effects. I also took Zinc Carnosine for a period of time. The combo of these pretty much gave me my life back. I'll summarize it below:
-Cutting out certain foods (for me, dairy/protein powders)
-Using Betaine-HCL with meals to improve stomach acid
-Clean up diet (kinda goes along with the first one)
-Consume fermented foods (Kefir, sauerkraut, etc)
-L-glutamine (Positive effects on gut lining and repair)
    -Zinc Carnosine (for stomach lining)
Hope that helps. I know I wrote a wall of text here but this issue affected my life for so long that I want to assist anyone suffering with this condition in any way I can.

I went through many of the things you went through. I just didn’t have computers when I was in my 20’s. So I didn’t really go that route. I was blind. I wish I had. I believe we’re all so conditioned to believe doctors. That they know better so we must follow what they say. They must have our best interest at heart. But honestly how can they? Through they years I’ve seen that people are just a commodity to them. A way to make a buck. When you knew their history, that for centuries they were just servants. Not the prestigious position they hold today. But the drug companies have improved the doctors reputation and have push this propaganda that only doctors know your body and what is going on and what is best for you. They say, “do as they say, they know best, you can’t know you haven’t been to medical school.” But people didn’t know that they were being duped by the drug companies. Even many doctors don’t realize that medical schools are influenced by drugs companies and that’s why they don’t even look at natural ways and food ways of healing the body. It’s disgusting. It’s all about money when you get down to it. While people are dying unnecessarily.

Great video. I suffered from post nasal drip and daily mucus in throat for approximately two and a half years. I had this from 2002-2004 in my early 20’s. Doctors could not figure it out. They kept telling me I had an infection and required antibiotics. An infection was never the case. I’m 2004, an ears, nose, and throat specialist stated that before surgery consideration, she wanted to rule out fungus. She had me conduct a sinus rinse (Neti pot) 6 times a day for three weeks. Magically, the post nasal drip and excess mucus disappeared; it had killed the fungus. To this date I apply a sinus rinse daily in AM. Wanted to share my story for those that have have ruled out bacteria, allergies, and acids.

Another non-digestive cause for chronic mucus production in the throat can be a nasal polyp. I suppose that was not your case because the ear doctor would have most definitely seen it when examining your nose. However, it was the case with me.
For some reason general practitioners rarely examine the patient's nose when one comes presenting these symptoms, even though a nasal polyp is a known common cause, and the examination is very simple.

@@lindamartodam6014 fungus or tiny particles that can be inhaled can travel to your upper sinus cavities above your eyes. They can live there and aggravate your sinus passages. Your sinuses will create more mucus to alleviate the irritation. Sinus rinses (salt) will assist with clearing your sinus cavities. Try the rinse in the morning and before going to bed.

Over Thanksgiving this year I found I could eat some cheese without getting a rash, but tried a slice of pie (gluten crust) and the morning mucus was back immediately. What do we want to live with . . . or without? It’s our choice.

Also, my acid reflux has almost completely stopped. It now only occurs when i eat too late in the evening. The mucus in my throat has greatly reduced and i suspect will improve over time. Another cause, especially for those over 50, is Hiatal Hernia, which allows stomach acid into the esophagus and throat. Stooping over allows this to happen more frequently. Before bed, try jumping off a small step (about 6 inches high) several times and forcing the stomach back down through the diaphragm. Also, a tablespoon of cider vinegar helps with the stomach acid.

Indeed Kaz, I stopped eating dairy 3 years ago and have been free of hay fever for the first time in my life. My summers were miserable for 55 years. I believe asthma and eczema could be linked to diet and dairy as well, My daughter stopped eating dairy around the same time and her serious eczema cleared up.

I used to have leaky gut, my naturopathic doctor helped me heal my gut. I haven’t had the GI symptoms or issues for 8 years. I actually healed my gut by doing everything you suggest in this video.
But I still have too much mucus in my throat and bronchia. Mine is related to air pollution, allergies, and asthma. Mine is worse in the winter due to air quality and the atmospheric inversion holding pollution down near the ground. If I get above the inversion in the mountains the problem goes away. I used to take 7 medications including a steroid inhaler for asthma. It was poorly controlled this way and I was susceptible to bronchitis. I now take Aller-C, and N-acetyl-L-Cysteine daily, and use Breathe essential oil as an inhaler. The asthma is now well controlled. And I haven’t had bronchitis for 8 years.
Perhaps you could do a video on root causes of the body’s reaction to pollution, allergies and asthma.

There is one very important missing reason Dr. Berg that should be mentioned here. When you have an accident and you create a trauma reflex out of it (saving down the wrong compensation patterns that your body automatically does if one part of the body doesn't work), this will create an asymmetry of your entire body. In very severe cases, as it happened for me, this will strongly affect your throat, jaw and even ears.
After my accident many years ago, where the doctors could not rebuild my anatomy as it is supposed to be, my body changed so much over the years that my throat on one side got pinched so much that there was literally no space left in the throat. I had a lump in my throat the entire day for several years, and no one would believe me that it was due to the accident because it sounded so strange that an injury in your leg could do that. After we fixed my leg 12 years after the accident, my anatomy got back to normal, my symmetry slowly changed back over the coming years and the lump in my throat disappeared ever since big time.
And just to add: Mucus was just one of many symptoms I got due to this injury. I lived 5 years with a sudden hearing loss + tinnitus on one ear, simply because my jaw was surpressing my hearing nerves due to a wrong posture. It went away together with all other problems once my body started healing. Almost every single doctor over the years told me that I was a case for the psychiatrist.

The oral thrush affecting with chronic tonsillitis, frequent tooth aches, sinusitis, migraine, runny stuffy nose since my childhood days. All attributed to excess consumption of sweets, chocolates, cookies, pastries etc.
The solution was to sterilise them with googling coconut milk in the mouth before brushing, keep your brush dipped in boiling water from reinfecting, such a mild mixture of coconut oil tree tea oil oregano oil few drops in your nose and apply them in war too using buds.
Later do through liver/gut cleanse and drink kefir yogurt to recolonise your gut with very strong probiotics. All symptoms vanish permanently.

Good stuff. I have had GERD for 40+ years. I initially used OTC meds which helped but, in my 40's I was prescribed omeprazole which worked really well. I too have noticed increased issues with breads eaten later in the day triggering acid overload. Recently, my wife has started making home made bread ground from raw wheat berries that become flour minutes after grinding and go right in the oven after three hours of rising. Strangely, ZERO acid effects after eating this nutritious version of what bread is supposed to be. Lab tests report most of the wheat products sold in grocery stores have little or no nutritional value (because they are made from flour ground weeks or months before use which has little nutritional value) while fresh-ground home baked items retain their full nutritional value for a couple days after baking. Great discussion. Keep it coming!

Just when I started to ‘accept’ that I’m sick to my stomach, literally feeling like it’s only a matter of time my body is going to give out on me, not to mention my labs constantly yo-yo-ing between low iron low VitaminD3 who many other symptoms that I feel doctors were stumped on how to get to the bottom of my problems. Take pickle which is made in mustard oil with food. It will cause dryness in body and stop producing phlegm inside nose. Later you should drink excess amount of water or eat water melon to keep yourself hydrated. The next day you'll feel better. You can try it after third or fourth day of flu. In my case flu won't stop for a month and it turns into an allergy so I always take pickle in food and that works for me.

What an 'informative' presentation. You've told me more in under 15 minutes that 20 procedures conducted with balloon and scope on my esophagus since I was 26yo. I liked the fact that you included 'other' possible root causes; their effects and general directions that I would certainly ask my 'primary' about. At almost 68, I'm informed I have 'Barret's' Syndrome as a result of many years of 'GERD'. I had never heard of ''LRP' and seriously am a 'candidate' for that 'diagnosis' as I frequently find myself with 'Mucous Throat'... Given my history with GERD; Esophageal spasms, a lifetime prescribed anti-acids, and PPI's it all comes together quite clearly. I wonder if I'd been 'misdiagnosed' all those years, even after the many scope procedures... Thank you for your effort putting together this very informative presentation. Have sent this 'link' to others who should ask their 'primary'...

Hey Doc, PPI = Proton Pump Inhibitor, not Protein Pump Inhibitor.
Also many vitamins are fat soluble and many people think that fats= bad while paying little attention to HFC and overly processed foods.
I think you should also qualify the grains comment/suggestion as some gains are much better than others. For many people including myself, lowering gluten intake can have a huge impact on post nasal drip. I recommend stopping all gluten for at least 4 weeks to see and then if you see results, but insist on consuming glutens, you can slowly reintroduce them to discover your threshold. That threshold may change as you age so you may wish to check it again at some point down the road.

This has been happening to me and I cough up phlegm, which is so gross. I was just telling a friend and she said you must have allergies and I knew it wasn’t that, it’s definitely what Dr. berg is saying.

Dr Berg, thank you for all your videos. I was drawn to this one, because I have had the problem for more than 30 years. Unfortunately, I have no symptoms on your list except the mucus and a runny nose. My allergies have been completely tested, I have absolutely none. I also had an MRI of my sinuses, which showed a moderate infection, but the ENT saw nothing. When she looked, I have found relief however, in an unusual way I read an article about bromelain which is found in pineapples. I ate a half a can of chunky pineapples the very day I read this article. The next morning I cleared my throat and to my surprise, it brought up a mouthful of mucus the most that has ever come up. I am convinced that my coughing is from mucus in my lungs. Since then I have taken bromelain capsules as they have been recommended rather than the pineapple itself it is more cost-effective and works beautifully. I rarely cough anymore and my nose runs very little, I am absolutely thrilled to have stumbled across this article, and I believe bromelain may help many of the readers here. Blessings to all of you.

Dr Berg, this video is heaven sent. For many years, I had this problem and went to several doctors for help. They would prescribe the same medication that would never get rid of the problem. I had colonoscopies and I would describe the same exact symptoms that you talked about and they would look at me like I’m crazy. God heard my prayers. Finally, the truth is spoken. Thanks again for posting this video!

To rule it out, have a doctor examine your nose. Chronic mucus production in the throat can be caused by a nasal polyp, rather than it being a digestive problem. For some reason doctors rarely check for this, even though it's a known and common cause.

You nailed it with this one. I've had acid reflux for the past four years with a chronic cough (like a 'smoker's cough' - though I don't smoke). I cured the acid reflux by taking two tbsp ACV once in the morning and once before bed. Magically the cough and phlegmy throat disappeared too.

Dairy products are the #1 culprit for me; milk, cheese, yogurt, ice cream, etc. Dr Berg didn’t even mention that & I’m not sure why. Milk products contain casein, which they use to make furniture glue! It causes flem, mucous in your entire body. Once I stopped eating milk products, the mucus disappeared. Now, if I splurge & have a bowl of ice cream or some cheese, within 15-30 minutes I am congested!! It is worth considering.

Yeast or candida could be a culprit and lying under the radar. Won’t hurt to drink a few tonics to cleanse the gut/intestines. Look into h2o2, oil of oregano or watch dr Bergs video on candida 😊

Thank you for the info Dr. Berg. Let me start by saying this past year has been a terrible year. It Started off with gallbladder stones that caused bad reflux that turned into pneumonia, I had to remove my gallbladder. At the time I was over weight at 220 and was diagnosed with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. I also had horrible eczema, joint pain and hair loss. I was producing a lot of mucus in my throat that I was constantly spitting out and a cough that never went away, I would regurgitate my food, I was on antibiotics and PPI’s which made it worse. I saw a GI doctor who then took a biopsy sample from my stomach esophagus and that came out clear. I also was tested for H.Pylori which came back negative. Now all it came down to down to was my diet and what I found was that I can only eat meat and fruit. The carnivore diet changed my life except I eat a salad here and there with fruit but I can’t even eat anything with pepper or any kind of seasoning without producing the mucus again. I only drink water and I do have dessert it’s just sugar free. My body is unique I guess. I lost so much weight and I never starved myself. No more mucus, no more medications. I feel so much better so if anyone is having the mucus issue like I did please listen to your body.
