Tracheal Collapse in Dogs | Vet Explains

  • Dr. Lera talks about tracheal collapse with Ruby, a four-year-old Cavapoo.
    Tracheal collapse is a common cause of airway obstruction in dogs. The trachea, or “windpipe,” is a tube made up of sturdy rings of cartilage through which air is transported to and from the lungs. Sometimes, however, the tracheal rings begin to collapse, and as air is squeezed through, a characteristic honking cough results.
    Why tracheal collapse occurs is unknown, although a congenital abnormality, in which the cartilage of the tracheal rings is less cellular and therefore weaker than normal, is suspected. (source: Fetch)

    I had a 13yo, 95lb big chocolate lab named Cody who had that cough, but I was ignorant to it being related to anything worse until one day he sat and laid down struggling for breath. So bad his tongue was turning blue. I was beyond terrified. It was on a late Sunday evening when the vet wasn’t open, thankfully they had an emergency line and a vet met us at the office to take care of him (he was a longtime favorite of this animal hospital). Thank god that the ride to the vet let him calm down a bit and get some air blowing on him which at least allowed him to get some oxygen and breathe slightly. They gave him a shot of something to help with the inflammation and relax him which brought his breathing back to normal. It was the most terrifying experience, not knowing if it was his final ride. Cody lived another two years of being happy, comfortable, loved. Also when he did get an attack once or twice after, we had medication to help him relax and knew a simple car ride was the best remedy to get my boy back to 100%. Dighton Rehobath Animal Hospital was and is so incredible with the care they take. ***My vet also advised me to use a harness to prevent possible tracheal paralysis attacks due to pulling on a collar. I’ll never use a collar again in a dog***

      I think my dog might have this. My dad uses a prong collar, which I am strongly against, for both our dogs. The larger ones prong collar is far too tight and whenever I tell him to not use it he always just gets mad and acts like nothing is going to happen. Additionally, our larger dog has been coughing a lot recently and whenever he sleeps, he has this weird breath where he snorts air for a couple seconds: he has never done this before. Also, whenever we put a regular collar on him now and if he pulls a little bit, he starts coughing. I’ve been taking a little initiative and started only using a harness when I walk them, but my dad is still ignorant and refuses to take him to the vet which is honestly bullshit in my opinion.

    Thank you Dr. Lera for your very informative video. We adopted Petey, a chihuahua mix 2 days ago from a rescue in Georgia. He began gasping and choking last night every half hour all through the night. Our other 2 chihuahuas did this but only occasionally. One had an enlarged heart and the other had severe periodontal disease when we rescued him. They were never diagnosed with tracheal collapse, but after watching Dr. Lera's video, I'm sure that's what they had. But it was never severe or constant. I have a call into the vet. Thanks again Dr. Lera!

    This was a great video came at the right time! My small 7 pound dog just recently had to have a lot of dental work done but he was also showing signs of the coughing. The vet did go ahead and do bloodwork to make sure his heart was good before he did any dental work. Thank Goodness everything came back good with the heart and kidneys so they were able to clean his teeth and do extractions without any issues .So this is good to know the two of those symptoms” coughing and dental issues”were somehow connected and that I need to stay on top of his dental health in between his cleanings. Since his cleaning and extractions I have noticed less coughing than before so hopefully this took care of any throat issues or at least has made it less of an issue and that I can maybe prevent it from getting any worse.

      Interesting. My 12 year old corgi has started honk coughing as of late and I've been looking up what it could be. It doesn't seem to effect him, he doesn't struggle to breathe, his appetite hasn't changed, he's not averse to exercise...maybe a little lethargic but he's 12 so I don't really know...He recently had blood work done to make sure he was ok to keep taking his anti-inflammatory and everything came back normal for the most part. One thing the vet did say is she recommended a teeth cleaning. I'm terrified to put him under at his age so I didn't do it, I didn't know that the coughing and dental issues could be related...

    Good day. We have an 8-year-old Shih Tzu. She was diagnosed with this at about 2 years old. However, recently she started to have more regular episodes. In October of this year, she had a terrible episode and was having difficulty breathing. Luckily I was home and rushed her to my Vet. She's on a pump now, twice a day...and has only had 2 small episodes which is a huge relief. We are terrified of leaving her alone, worried that she will die on us if one of us is not there to help her. We keep moving around our schedules to make sure one of us is home with her at all times. When it happens, we need to calm her down by wetting our hand with cold water and caressing her face and sometimes sticking a finger down her throat to open her airway. That usually works. What else can we do for our dog at the time that they are actually having a tracheal collapse episode? Thank you.

We are working with the shelter, and he is going back soon for a possible neuter, but he open mouth breaths a bit, snores sometimes but really grunts and coughs when trying to take him anywhere or if he runs too much. Very nice video! Just wish it explained in more detail of the risks with stents and life expectancy with a dog that has one. Sadly our 7 year old morkie passed away a week ago from complications with his CT. He had a bad coughing spasm last week and we rushed him to Cornell Veterinary Hospital. Vets said he’s a good candidate for a stent. Unfortunately with the sedation his breathing got worse and he regurgitated into his lungs and his heart stopped. The vets tried CPR on him for 10 minutes but he couldn’t be revived. This was totally unexpected and are still in shock over it. Interestingly enough he didn’t seem to have this issue as a pup. Just the past 3 years we have been dealing with it. We were told it’s a progressive disease but with meds his life could be prolonged. We never expected he would go this quickly.

    If a dog has MMVD B2 (trachea seemingly compressed by the enlarged heart) with recurring coughing, are medications (e.g., antitussive) commonly given on a constant or ad-hoc basis?
    Also, I understand that trachea collapse frequently occurs with chronic bronchitis. Is it standard practice for the dog with trachea collapse to have further tests (e.g., trachea wash) and possible inflammation resolved before being administered antitussive (I understand antitussive might result in inflammatory mucus building up in the airway)?
    Thank you so much in advance for Dr. Lera's help!

    • @DrLera
      @DrLera  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Whentñ dogs are in stage b2 typically at that point the cardiologist is getting involved and an echocardiogram has been performed. I have quite frequently seen they will make the recommendation to start pimobendan/vetmedin to help the heart pump more efficiently. In some cases this is enough to get the heart back down to a normal size and cough suppressants are not even considered. I have found that anti tussive don't seem to work very when you have the heart pushing on the trachea. Performing any sort of airway lavage, most commonly a bronchiole alveolar lavage would be performed if x-rays are suggesting that there may be an infectious component. Or may be performed if x-rays are normal and the patient is not responsive to common anti tussive therapy.

    • @shilary2000
      @shilary2000 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DrLera
      Thank you so much for the prompt reply!
      My understanding is that antitussive can be given as a trial therapy. If the trachea is continued to be compressed (despite pimobendan/vetmedin) and the dog is not responsive to antitussive therapy, then additional checks (e.g., airway lavage) can be done. Only when inflammation is confirmed, should corticosteroids be administered?
      Every dog is different. However, it would be great to understand what is the usual protocol/order on administering different drugs given the varying views that exist (e.g., have come across some saying antitussive should only be given if inflammation is resolved; while some suggest to start with bronchodilators + antitussive)
      Again, really appreciate your answer and help - couldn't be more grateful!

    Thank you for all the good information I have been taking my Yorkie to the vet with no direct answers on what he has going on and no collapsing trachea he makes the reverse sneezing sound everytime he drinks a elevated bowl hasn’t helped either he also has these very random episodes where he does the cough like noise like he has irritation in his throat and starts pacing shaking his head here and there like he’s trying to clear something but starts drooling excessively or a clear fluid soaks his mouth with open mouth breathing and occasional foam I just want answers to be able to help him out please if you can help with any sort of information I’m so scared it might develop or be a beginning of a collapsed trachea he’s only 10mths and been doing this for some time now only on occasion it’s not a everyday thing nasal drops usually helped his episodes but this time we have just not been able to clear it he has gotten better but still sounding a bit congested like HELP

    Is tracheal collapse associated with chronic bronchitis? I had to put my 12 year old Aussie down due to this. They put both down as potential diagnosis but I’m not quite sure exactly what it was. Her medication is causing her diarrhea I don’t know if I should stop the medication or just keep giving it to her she had about 4 days left. Also any natural remedies that can help with this ? There are various medication that may help, so you may want to try something different. You could look at putting her on probiotics if her collapsing trachea is really bad and the meds that your vet put her on are helping to manage the airway, but causing diarrhea.

    Thank you for the video. My grandma's husky/shepherd mix recently started coughing really loud after she kept pulling on the leash really hard. I became worried if it was a collapsed trachea because the coughing is SO loud and she will cough throughout the day. Is it possible for this to be a temporary thing? I think her pulling the collar against the trachea really hard is the starting concern that will be addressed. No good or proper dog owner should ever tug a collar if it presses against the windpipe.
      She can cause damage, which is why harnesses are encouraged when walking a dog.

    • @larsvonrinpoche1229
      @larsvonrinpoche1229 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@mischalecterTV it's not snags always the owner! I have a husky cross and he pulls like he is training for the sledding Olympics! A harness helps a lot. But if he's just on a leash, he will pull until he chokes himself.. he won't stop pulling . Even if I run with him to relieve tightness on the leash. You'd think the discomfort would stop him, but the husky In him overpowers his pain response or something.

He also has an enlarged heart :( The vet has prescribed a Bronchodilator which helps but his coughing has progressively worsened! We are scared to give him steroids due to his age! Not sure what to do as my baby has a very hard time to breathe and tries to breathe with his mouth. It gets worse during the night and he is unable to sleep. Is there anything I can do to help him ease the pain and comfort him to sleep?

      I just found out that getting your dog a elevated food and water dish helps alot! Bending the neck down to eat and drink can cause health problems. I went on Amazon and looked up pet bowls elevated and my dog can now eat and drink at about head level- it makes it alot better. You can measure your dogs height to know about what size bowl he will need. I hope this can help you! My dog is 17 yrs. Old. Also do research on natural things about your dogs condition that may help. All of a sudden my dog was acting like he could not swallow his food. But when I would set him on my lap like a child and make his food into what looks like meatballs he can swallow and eat it that way! Maybe try different things. Make sure there is nothing stuck in his neck causing blockage. I have been feeding him that way. But when I started to use the elevated pet bowls I noticed that when I had came back into the room he had eaten one of the meatballs. I will add a little raw oatmeal into his dog food to thicken it a little or some people add a little cooked rice. Also there are a lot of ways to make your own dog food on u-tube. Keep searching I believe you will find something that will help your fur baby. Also look up books on Natural Cures for the type of problem your dog has! Just type it in on the internet and see what comes up.

My puppy inhaled a long nylabone chew so no one could get it from him. He did not cough it up, but I would say once or twice an hour for a week now he has a slight cough.
