    A REALLY old Boeing refueling a sorta old, but really new Boeing. I remember when United rolled out the 767s when I was a kid at SFO and my uncle worked at the maintenance base. We got to climb all over one and a 757. Had to be the early 80's.

    That's got to be a pretty good pucker factor for the Boomer to see the 46 climbing towards his window before he broke off and cleared...lol. I guess one thing I never really thought of even after 27 years working on fighters was tankers getting gas. Makes sense...but I never really thought about it.

    As an old KC-135A Boom Operator until I separated in 1983, they were already mishandling the "next tanker" process back then. So, after almost 40 years, the best they could come up with is the KC-46? The 135's will still be getting the gas off long after the last -46 was hauled off to Davis-Monthan!

    • @ohioflyingfarmer7050
      @ohioflyingfarmer7050  ปีที่แล้ว

      The -135 got used and abused over the last 20 years in the Middle East.
      It has been a great airplane, but it can't fly forever.

      MacDill has a refueling wing, all 135’s. You can look up the tail numbers and it will tell you what year they were built. Like the one he is flying with the 0 for the first number? Early 60’s would be my guess. They had one on the parking apron that had a double 0. 😳 she was still flyin!

    I suppose Pegasus is in line with the rest of the Greek mythology names such as the P-8 Poseidon or the A400M Atlas. Pegasus was a "Divine winged horse" and was among ither things tasked with carrying Zeus's thunderbolts, suppose that is somewhat fitting to a tanker :)

And my boys grew up with me taking them to the north end of the runway at Dyess (amazing how close you can get) and sitting there, letting them throttle up and kick the burners in. When they were little they would go nuts. Good memories 😊

  • @ottoneidlinger4938
    @ottoneidlinger4938 ปีที่แล้ว

    That looked like a perfect landing. I didn’t see the plane bounce at all. Couple of questions Rod. This may seem silly. Does rubber build up on the runway? If it does do they clean it off from time to time? No offense to you, but the KC-10 is still my favorite. I love these videos Rod. Thank you for doing them.

    • @ohioflyingfarmer7050
      @ohioflyingfarmer7050  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, over time rubber builds up and it can become slick. Runways are cleaned off periodically, depending on the amount of build up. The KC-10 served well, but has pretty much been retired due to the -46.

    Gear Down, Full Stop! What magic words. Cheated death once again.
    Excellent video and on a check ride yet? I do have a couple of questions.
    It looks like all the instruments are electronic. Are there no mechanical ones as backup?
    Are all your pubs (approaches,departures, charts) all electronic. No paper?
    It appeared you did an enroute rendezvous? Does your GPS set you up to do that or do you have to do a little arithmetic? Can you do a point parallel rendezvous?
    Are there AR tracks like in the good old days (I.E. AR-20 NE, sorry only one I can remember) or does Center just clear you wherever?
    As you might have guessed I was a Nav a long time ago. Just curious how things have progressed.
    Thanks for keeping us civilians safe. Godspeed!

    • @ohioflyingfarmer7050
      @ohioflyingfarmer7050  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your service Stuart!
      Most of our flight instruments are glass, but the airspeed indicator is still mechanical, and we still have a standby attitude indicator.
      Most of our pubs are now accessed on an IPad, but we still carry paper pubs as a backup in certain situations.
      GPS is our primary means of navigation, but we still use VORs and TACANs for backup.
