I know I’m reacting one year after you posted this but I’ve just found you. It’s so heartwarming to find someone who reacts that way to my favourite band and singer. They were just mind blowing! Especially in my young days.
That's our Freddie, outrageous to the last. There will never be anyone like him. I met him a couple of times at Harpoon Louis (later Harpo's and Banana Max). We lost a national treasure when he passed away in 1991. Gone, but NEVER forgotten ☹️💞
For me, the passing of Freddie Mercury was one of those events where you will never forget where you were when you heard the news. For me I was driving along whitehorse road in Croydon, listening to Capitol Radio on my way to work, I was just totally stunned when the news was announced. The world lost one of the greatest musicians when Freddie left us.
@@100SteveB I only ever cried for Lennon, Freddie & Jackson.. 3 musical greats that could never be replaced. It was known that Freddie had aids, long before he told everyone. I’m so here for more Queen. Do keep in mind when watching them live that it is really, LIVE! No auto tune, no other fancy digitalisation (wasn’t a thing then). Just four hugely talented musicians who became as close as brothers. There is a reason why people from all musical genre’s still love Queen and still miss Freddie 30 years after his passing. Dive into their amazing and diverse catalogue of music, meet all the wonderful Queen followers and discover the story of the incomparable Freddie Mercury.
Couldn't have put it any better. I stumbled upon Queen when I was at Live Aid in 1985 when I was 16 years old. Saw them twice in 1986 and have been hooked ever since and I'm now 52 years old !!!! RIP my beautiful yellow persian popinjay Freddie, you still are a LEGEND xxxxx
I'm an old 70 (young at heart) lady and it is thrilling to watch a youngster, such as yourself, listen and enjoy the type of music we/I used to love in our/my young days too! They always give me chills and it's such a pleasure watching and enjoying vicariously through your young eyes. You have so much to look forward to. Freddy was a showman and his clothes were part of his shows! TFS and have a great week!
Glad you enjoyed it. As other have said, you really should react to the live version from Montreal in 1981. It blows the studio version out of the water. Queen are very much a live band and their live versions are almost always better than the studio versions.
Usually i would agree, but the live version misses out on all the harmonies, the things that make this song really great. In my opinion, this version, blows the live 81 version out of the water, i would much rather take the studio version, and anyway, this is the first way we all heard it.
@Improve Sheffield Totally disagree with that but it is subjective. Like most Queen tracks this is bathed in multiple layers of harmony so for me these types of songs always sounded empty by comparison. A song like tie your mother down is fine from studio to stage. The other thing is his voice that suffered with the tour schedule, his soft falsetto is missing so those Freddie isms on vinyl are lost live.
I agree 100% with RetroSpective and pinball1970. The studio version you heard is BY FAR the best version of this song. Freddie doesn't make the high notes live. Queen best in the studio.
Did you know that Freddie had an overbite which made his vocal range so much better. Even when he got rich he didn’t fix his overbite because he was scared he’d loose his voice ❤️
Actually, the extra teeth and overbite did not make a difference in his voice…. go online and look at the studies that have been done that disprove it. But, it is true that Freddie wouldn’t have his teeth fixed because he believed it. What actually helped was his ability to use “false vocal cords”. I have read this is something that most opera singers struggle to do, but it was natural for Freddie.
Sorry I should’ve done my research more, I was told he had an overbite. Thanks for correcting me though. I’m glad he didn’t fix them too he was perfect as he was ❤️
I saw Queen in 1986, I was 20 years old, Freddie walked on stage with a crown on )) ..... there was no one like Freddie until there was Freddie .... there has been no one like Freddie since he sadly left us. In the moment of watching him everyone kind of knew, he was uniquely special which made the love for him all the more wonderful. I have never heard a single person say something remotely negative about Freddie. In sport .... the equivalent to Freddie was Mohammad Ali. With Ali, there was no one like him before or since. Welcome to the Queen fan club. :) Now you gotta' listen to the entire discography... So many great songs. Fat Bottom Girls, Bohemian Rhapsody, Under Pressure, Princes of the Universe ("Highlander" Theme Song), I Want to Break Free, Bicycle Race, plenty of others...
Hey Joel. I actually like it when reactors stop and go back on something amazing in the song. Your reaction was cool, especially the bit when you added it to your Spotify playlist during the reaction.
Freddie saw his role on stage as grabbing the attention of the audience and holding them in his hand the whole time, so he chose to be a bit outrageous and flamboyant which became his on stage persona. Off stage, he was a very different character, generous, hard working, kind, and a loyal friend.
I never tire of hearing Freddie's voice, but watching your reactions to him, hearing him for the first time, just enhances that experience. I'm sure most of us had that reaction the first time we heard all of their tracks - and there are many!! You have got much more listening pleasure to come!
I have watched this with you numerous times. I am considerably older than you. But your reaction as made me listen to this song more and appreciate this timeless classic. Your videos are always excellent. Well done Joel .
Loving these Queen reactions!! But you really need to check out the live versions. Freddy Mercury was the absolute ultimate showman. He could hold the audience in the palm of his hand.
Hey Joel, brilliant reaction and I'm so glad you're discovering Queen. It's never too late 🥰 I specifically noticed how to reacted to Freddie's high notes so I very highly recommend you check out his duet with Montserrat Caballe. There is a whole album, but you will be completely blown away by Barcelona xxx
A lot of the early Queen songs were very complex, way back when they used analogue tape and auto tune wasn't heard of, Studio versions of " March of the black queen" "Death on two legs" and "The prophet's song" showcase their talent
The Prophet's Song is one of those hidden gems that's only for the advanced Queen fan. It's a go to for very existential problems for me, and has been for over 30 years. Highly recommend giving it at least one listen -- AND -- give yourself permission to hate it at first. But if you hear it once, you will invariably end up making your way back to it later when the mood is right and the song becomes cathartic. Good recco, @Steve!
Hi Joel - Great to see you appreciating one of the best Bands ever - You must do a reaction on one of their first recordings "KILLER QUEEN" (released 1974) this helped throw them into the limelight and they never looked back.
As a Queen fan, it's been wonderful watching your reactions to them. They had a very versatile range of songs, not always serious ones 😊☺️ The critics used to pan them for it. Personally, I loved it ❤️
New kids discovering Freddie/Queen makes me miss them even more after all these years 😢. Nothing has ever topped them or ever will after all this time !!! ( be careful… you are going to end up in what we Queen people call “ the rabbit hole “ 😂… beautiful place to be )
Love your complete presence and attention to this… it’s so inspiring to watch someone young feel this song so strong and have such an appreciation of all the details and talent in this song!
Mate, I am glad you discovered Queen. Do yourself the biggest favour ever. Listen to ENTIRE albums, there are always hidden treasures, songs on the album, not released as singles. Oh the journey you are about to embark on. I grew up with Queen, been a part of my daily life since I was born. I have every album on my phone and on a USB stick for my car stereo
Yeah, I have to say, it is one of my favourite queen songs. George Michael did a great version as well. One of very very few people who would be of been able to take on a queen song and get away with it
@@Ionabrodie69 that live version was pretty dam good. I do agree, even though George Michael was obviously huge, I still think his song writing and his voice is still somehow underrated
This was BEFORE auto tune or voice correction, so you heard his real, actual voice. I accept that you listened to the studio recording and watched the video which was not lip-synced back then but that was the real voices of all of the band, so thank you for loving great music.
Love Queen. I saw them twice live, Freddie's voice is so perfect. He was an exhibitionst so the skin-tight leotard thing was part od his costume. He usually came onstage with a cape & crown too...royalty indeed!
Hi Joel,I was smiling all the way through that. Seeing you listen to it for the first time is wonderful your reaction is awesome. Grew up listening to Queen (showing my age now) so I was so lucky to have their music in my life. You are on a fantastic journey now...Queen will be forever with you. Again Joel thanks x
Yea, Freddie was out there with his live 'wear'. Thank the Lord these 4 lads found each other, a match made in heaven! I saw them live in Slane Castle Ireland when I was a kid, IN-SANELY TALENTED every single one of them! The world is not the same without Freddie. Have you seen Brian May try to get through singing 'Love of my Life' live after Freddie died? Bro, it's a heartbreaker and Roger steps in as he always to reinforce the vocals...
You absolutely MUST watch their Live Aid set i would recommend Queen Live Aid ‘Hammer to Fall’ - the way Freddie led the crowd at Wembley was out of this world. x. The ‘strange’ stage outfit - bear in mind this was 50 years ago - there were no computer graphics so all manual effects and lighting, groups made up for this with elaborate stage outfits. ( take a look at David Bowie or Elton John from the same period - also both British Musicians btw)
Way to make me feel super old!! My husband was at Live Aid and he is 56. He sure wasn't 6 when he went! Actually 37 years ago, but you're absolutely correct in saying this was one of Queen's best performances.
Queen are amazing, but one of the reasons why you might be finding their music so visceral is because there's no autotune. They even apply autotune and/or pitch correction to amazing vocalists these days, sometimes without their knowledge, and what it does is remove all the tiny flaws in the human voice which give a performance that something special - things sound over-produced and less moving than they would have had they been left alone. Here's two quite long but very interesting videos about autotune and how it is a huge disservice to many of the great vocalists around today. He uses Freddy Mercury as one of his examples. th-cam.com/video/s7aDN3oujXI/w-d-xo.html and th-cam.com/video/OBk7BnIA12c/w-d-xo.html
Its enjoyable to see someone find joy in something, pausing is fine many reactors do it. its wonderful you get to share it with others too. And for me its a good way to start my work day.
Queen, ELO, Supertramp and Abba - My top bands - loved them since I was a teenager back in the early 2000s and still listen to at least one of them every day. Absolutely top-notch stuff.
Queen's songs have more than held up over the years and your reactions, have been fun to watch. You might like to react to Freddie interacting with a huge crowd at Wembley in 1986 before they perform Under Pressure. Or to the remastered Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy. Your channel is great. I hope you are fully recovered from eating that chip.
The look of absolute joy on you face at the 6:40 mark. You my friend are turning into a true Queen fan, enjoy there back catalogue and share that joy with us more please.
The testament of you listening to this, is that you weren't even born when this song was released. Thanks for your commentary on this as Freddie's music has always been alive x
Loving your reactions. Like you I am not a naturally musical person, but I know what moves me and Queen takes me to places in my soul that I did not know existed
Two other versions of Somebody to Love are really, really worth watching. Montreal 1981 and the performance in Milton Keynes. Both, as opposed ti this, are live performances.
I love watching your reaction videos. Having grown up with Queen it’s easy to become complacent. Watching this reminds us just how brilliant Queen and Freddie were.
Wants to Live Forever, Only The Good Die Young. White Queen, Fat Bottomed Girls, Bicycle Race, And The ultimate dis songs: Death On Two Legs. Barcelona, Freddie and the lads have over three hundred songs in their discography you won’t run out any time soon. Roger and Freddie actually have an almost identical range the biggest differences being Freddie and his control over his false vocal chords and Roger who actually could hit notes in his falsetto that were so high as to nearly be whistle range.
@@margaretnicol3423 No worries. I understand, of course. I honestly think he will enjoy it so much more when he is thoroughly familiar with the six songs. :)
Your reaction is just perfect. I've listened to their songs countless times and each of those times it's like I'm hearing them for the first time. I get goosebumps on my soul. Freddie had such a powerful voice, with a vocal range that very few people can equal. Many have tried; none of them compare.
Fantastic reaction, thanks Joel. Really great to hear your comments. I think you would love a song of theirs called 'Love of my life" - the live version is fantastic with the crowd's participation in parts.
I'm so glad you like this song! This song, in my opinion. Is my personal favorite! I'd say you should react to the live version of this song! It's Somebody to Love live in Montreal, 1981, Where Freddie Mercury (the lead singer) looks alot different than how he was in the 70s. With much shorter hair and a mustache. But I recommend you listening to the live version, it's pretty amazing!
Hi Joel, loved your reaction❤️ My favourite is radio gaga the lyrics are amazing and if you watch the video before you get to the live aid performance you will understand the reaction of the crowd. If you love this you must watch Barcelona. It's Freddie living his dream and amazing vocals from the master. If you want a funny video I want to break free is the one. As to Freddie's tight costume it was back in the days of what we call 70's glam rock where as we say "anything goes". Checkout David Bowie singing Star man dressed as alter ego Ziggy stardust to understand those times. Another great band you can checkout is ELO start with Mr Blue Sky. You will have heard some of their music too👍
See, Joel, I told you a couple of times that this is one of Queen's best songs and your reaction to it comes as nothing of a surprise to me. It also shows how versatile Freddie was during his lifetime in that he could sing everything from heavy rock, onto soul, ballads and even opera. The daftest part about it was that he never formally trained as a singer and actually studied Art and Design at Ealing College of Art in the 1960's prior to forming Queen. Those same studies enhanced his natural showmanship and theatricality and he put them to excellent use onstage - his four octave vocal range was part of his DNA and was obviously a bonus for everyone, wasn't it? By the way, you should also watch and possibly react to George Michael's cover version of this song at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert after Freddie's death when George sings along with the rest of Queen as well as a small gospel choir....it's also fantastic and is a fitting tribute to Freddie's musical genius. In fact as we've all seen you just added it to your Spotify playlist and if you watch and react to George Michael's cover of it you might want to add that to the same playlist on there purely for comparison between the two versions.
How can u not have heard of this beautiful song? Brittany Murphy did a cover on this. Find it on TH-cam and she is soooo good. This song was also used on Happy Feet. Great movie too!
I 1st heard this song in Happy Feet. Didn't realise it was a Queen song at 1st but when I did I thought another reason to love Queen. This version is good but a great version to listen to is a live concert in Montreal.
@@lucie4185 I'll be honest and say something a little shocking, I don't like all of Queens song. Some like White Queen are just a little slow paced for my taste. There are are so many I do like though and are actually some of my all time favourite songs.
Hi Joel, Glad you liked it and thanks for your great channel. Have a look at the songs he did with one of the greatest opera singers ever, Montserrat Caballe, for the Barcelona Olympics. One is called Barcelona, the other How Can I Go On. Quite sad as they say he knew he wasn’t long to live and this was his last performance before he died. There is a fantastic interview with Monty Caballe talking about Freddie and how she reacted to him telling her about his HIV. Both were amazing beautiful people.
Amazing reaction love you discovering Queen don’t worry about pausing , yes please you really need to react to Somebody To Love live from Montreal 1981 Queen’s live performances are always different from the studio versions xx
In 1964, when I was thirteen, the Beatles exploded in America and changed rock music forever. The next three plus decades witnessed innumerable great bands producing songs and albums. A sampling of Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones, the Bee Gees, the Four Seasons, David Bowie and Simon and Garfunkel, to name but a few, would expand your musical knowledge to see just how rich and varied those thirty plus years were in musical history. Those of us who were around then were extremely fortunate, but it all is still available to your generation to discover and appreciate. This is not just a rabbit hole, but a whole universe to explore.
They say Freddy wrote this from the heart as he really was feeling lonely and unloved at the time. Those were the days of our lives was the last song he made. They say he was in a lot of pain ,but the end of that song is for all the fans .I think it was a beautiful farewell

He uses Freddy Mercury as one of his examples. th-cam.com/video/s7aDN3oujXI/w-d-xo.html and th-cam.com/video/OBk7BnIA12c/w-d-xo.html
It doesn't get any better!!!
Its enjoyable to see someone find joy in something, pausing is fine many reactors do it. its wonderful you get to share it with others too.
And for me its a good way to start my work day.
EVERY QUEEN SONG YOU HEAR WILL BE YOUR BEST ONE SO FAR !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Queen, ELO, Supertramp and Abba - My top bands - loved them since I was a teenager back in the early 2000s and still listen to at least one of them every day. Absolutely top-notch stuff.
Just came here from your latest Queen reaction on The Show Must Go On. Great dude
I love your reactions to Queen - I would venture right back to the beginning and the early 70's and listen to 'Seven Seas of Rhye' and 'Killer Queen'
I appreciate that someone young like you likes good music and good rock.
Joel, I think your fate is sealed, you’re now a dyed in the wool Queen fan, even if you started thirty years after Freddie’s death! 😜😍👍
I love queen freddie is a pure legend 🥰🥰🥰
It's so wonderful to see young people such as yourself discovering older music and musicians , it often blows contemporary music out of the water 👍😊
The testament of you listening to this, is that you weren't even born when this song was released. Thanks for your commentary on this as Freddie's music has always been alive x
Loving your reactions. Like you I am not a naturally musical person, but I know what moves me and Queen takes me to places in my soul that I did not know existed
Yes they do, even after all these years they're still the tops in my book and always will be!
Priceless, the look on your face!
Two other versions of Somebody to Love are really, really worth watching. Montreal 1981 and the performance in Milton Keynes. Both, as opposed ti this, are live performances.
You haven't lived until you've seen the Live Performance 1981
Montreal..
I love watching your reaction videos. Having grown up with Queen it’s easy to become complacent. Watching this reminds us just how brilliant Queen and Freddie were.
The show must go on for vocals too and take my breath away live .
You really have to react to “who wants to live forever” by them, I bet you’ve heard that one but didn’t know it was Queen 😁👍
Can't wait for the Live Aid Concert. Do it now!!!
There is no rush is there? It is better to hear the original versions of the songs first.
@@79BlackRose You're probably right. I'm being impatient. I just enjoyed it soooo much, especially Freddie's control over the crowd.
@@margaretnicol3423 No worries. I understand, of course. I honestly think he will enjoy it so much more when he is thoroughly familiar with the six songs. :)
Love that you love Queen there the best! Xx I get goosebumps ever time I hear them
Your reaction is just perfect. I've listened to their songs countless times and each of those times it's like I'm hearing them for the first time. I get goosebumps on my soul. Freddie had such a powerful voice, with a vocal range that very few people can equal. Many have tried; none of them compare.
You MUST hear Somebody to Love live Montreal 1981 THE ABSOLUTE BEST VERSION!! It is UNBELIEVABLE!
Fantastic reaction, thanks Joel. Really great to hear your comments. I think you would love a song of theirs called 'Love of my life" - the live version is fantastic with the crowd's participation in parts.
You’ve got emotional there!! And rightfully so… queen it’s just great! I’ve started listening like … 1997.
Amen to that !
Oh also... Too Much Love Will Kill You, one of my favourites
You will have heard some of their music too👍
I bet you most of the people watching your videos are from the UK because it's great to see a young American appreciate our mentors.
A classic Baptist church style song with a soloist and backing vocals. The similarity in performance is obvious.
Joel, you have to do radio ga ga..freddie mercury didnt mime like a lot do..it was pure, raw talent..his voice live was off the chart..
That's the great thing about Queen, all their songs are different but always so good.
@@lucie4185 I'll be honest and say something a little shocking, I don't like all of Queens song. Some like White Queen are just a little slow paced for my taste. There are are so many I do like though and are actually some of my all time favourite songs.
@@andrewvalentine6977 that's fine I personally don't like seven seas of rhye.
I dont know how many times Ive watched it. Just love the content. Keep it up young star 🌟
Awesome song! Awesome reaction! Awesome album - A Day At The Races (1976). Their best IMO. ❤️
The performance from Montreal '81 is my favorite as well!
I love how you don't keep stopping the song
You need 'Barcelona'!!!
It is a must Joel react to Barcelona before your a year older
You should react to ''somebody to love ' montreal live version !!!
They say Freddy wrote this from the heart as he really was feeling lonely and unloved at the time. Those were the days of our lives was the last song he made. They say he was in a lot of pain ,but the end of that song is for all the fans .I think it was a beautiful farewell
