Somebody To Love, live in Montreal 1981, if you’ve not seen it. One of the best live performances by anyone, ever.

I sure do miss Freddie. I got to see them live in 1982 and it was the best concert I have ever seen. He just commanded the stage with his presence. thanks for reacting to this - and keeping Queen alive.

Freddie, John, Roger and Dr. Brian May are on my Mt Rushmore of rock. They were pioneers in exploring ways to present rock in a way that was totally unexpected, either by vocals or by sound or by production. Much like The Beatles, although I’m not comparing them, they took music in a new direction with each and every album. Freddie is my GOAT.

Depending on the publication, Brian has, many times, been ranked with the best. Not only that, he wrote many Queen hits and other hidden gems in the Queen catalogue! He, along with Freddie, John & Roger, wrote number 1 hits for Queen.

Great Band, Great Singer, Freddie lost way too soon. Thank you so much. Miss them. Queen with Adam Lambert is good but there will never be another Freddie Mercury

I love me some Freddie Mercury. That "rock growl" gets me every time.
It always amazes me how Queen could find so many ways to perform the same song and always make it sound equally entertaining, fresh, and clean. Obviously, they could not recreate the studio sound on the live stage because of their prolific use of double-tracking and overdubbing. In the case of "Somebody To Love", they embraced the limitations of the live venue and re-arranged the music to emphasize Freddie's solo singing while still showcasing the backing vocals of Roger and Brian. GENIUS!!

Queen drummer Roger Taylor said, “Somebody To Love” is Aretha Franklin - influenced. Freddie’s very much into that. We tried to keep the track in a loose, gospel-type feel. I think it’s the loosest track we’ve ever done”. The song went Platinum 3 times in the United States & Platinum in the United Kingdom, Italy, & Denmark. 🥰 ❤

As a Queenie it doesn't matter how many times I listen to a song. Freddie reaches right into your soul and takes you along for an emotional ride. Thank you, excellent review ☮

The studio versions highlighted their immaculate harmonies which were not always recreatable in live performances. But, LIVE, the energy is unsurpassed and equally impressive!
Fun fact: That Hawaiian-style shirt Freddie is wearing sold for $95,000 USD at auction in September. His handwritten lyrics manuscript for STL sold for $300,000 USD. LEGEND!

Somebody to Love showcases the iconic genius that was Queen, thanks for responding to it! I think a lot of people forget to think about the rest of the band, because it was all of them together.
Hope you feel better soon, too.

I agree with your statement about Brian May he is underrated as a guitarist, did you know Brian’s famous red guitar 🎸 he hand made it with his father , made from an old wooden fireplace! at the beginning of his career, Queen never disappoints, I’m so proud and humbled that I attended many live Queen concerts in the 70s and 80s , I remember a wonderful time at LiveAid in 1985 at Wembley Stadium 🇬🇧 Uk , and I am so fortunate to have been at Freddie’s very last live performance at Knebworth Park also in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 Knebworth the crowds were estimated to be 120-150 thousand people, great reaction thanks 🙏 Freddie is surely missed!

You are so right, there will only be one Freddie! This official video is very different than the live but both are great. Queen will always be one of my all time favorites. I am a harmony junkie anyway. Thanks for playing the official video, even though you know the song. You might want to try "The Prophet's Song" if you have not heard. You are so right about Brian. He belongs up there with the best.

My favorite Queen song. Love the combination of high notes and harmonies with the drums.
PS. If you want to see them in studio, watch their "One Vision" video and the making of clip afterwards.

I also love the official videos that show the bands in the studio, I think it's amazing to see them working, especially Queen. From what you said, I think you would like the official video for One Vision (extended version) as it was recorded during the recording of the song for her documentary, please try to react, it's really worth it. I'm going to check out the full show now, I loved the channel.

Thank you for this fabulous reaction to IMHO the best band ever & for recognising Brian Mays genius on the guitar, his solos are always instantly recognisable! More Queen pls, would love you to do their set at Live Aid, 21 mins widely regarded as the best live performance ever, you won’t regret it & the Queen army will certainly watch! Love from Australia 🇦🇺

Even less appreciated is John Deacon's bass. Most of the songs they do would be nothing without his outstanding playing.

    • @deborahallen3318
      @deborahallen3318 ปีที่แล้ว

John Deacon is obviously brilliant, but I wouldn't say their songs would be nothing without him. Queen is "group" of four incredibly talented musicians with a unique sound and style of their own. When these amazing musicians came together is when the magic happened. 👑💙🌈

Thank you for reacting. My favorite way to share this song w/others is to have them watch this Official Video Version first (because it's the album recording and has those lush harmonies that they can't do in full on live concerts). It demonstrates Queen's, well Freddie's, theatricality. THEN next up is to watch the same song, "Somebody To Love - Live in Montreal 1981" , for Freddie in full power and realize what an audience got to experience.

First time visitor to your channel (yes I subscribed right away) and I have to say I love your appreciation for music and of course I love Queen so this is one of my favorite songs. I never tire of hearing it. I agree, I love the way Brian plays guitar and I have thought he was one of the best since the first time I heard him on the first Queen album. Thank you for a wonderful reaction.

    FANTASTIC, Thank you!
Since you mentioned you appreciate watching musicians in-studio:
“One Vision” official MV is in-studio footage. (The extended MV for full instrumentals.)
    AND…
There’s a fantastic 20-minute documentary on the making of the song, all in-studio footage w interview clips. (The best version of this video is on:
    queen danka channel.
Edited by Chief Mouse, it contains a bit more interview footage.)

Would you like the official video for One Vision, it's exactly like that!
And yes, there is only one Freddie Mercury, he knew how to sing every note simply because he loved music and had great inspirations like Areta Franklin, who inspired this song, as well as Lisa Mineli and Jimi Hendrix, of whom he and Brian were big fans (including Freddie made incredible portraits of Hendrix when he studied art)

It's nice to go back and see the videos from the days when Freddie was healthy....he was one of the all time greats and we all know that! His talent and influence is unmatched. Also, Brian May is absolutely overlooked a lot when it comes to his art form...he is amazing as well.

Thank you for this perceptive reaction.
Obviously they had to come up with a much simpler arrangement for live performances, there was no way they could reproduce the layered 'choir' effect on stage, but they even managed to make those into epic events - each one subtly different. I love how they break into the studio video with clips from the free concert in Hyde Park in September 1976...

Great job. Freddie and the group killed this and your reaction was great.
Suggestion for a future video (from the way back) Depeche Mode: Personal Jesus. I think it came out in 1989 so a late 80's song (were you even alive then, you look like your a 90's kid (I'm older than dirt so calling someone born in the 90's a kid is allowable)).

thanks so much - Brian May has always been fantastic.. I hope at some point you will listen to some of his solo efforts.. you will be shocked at his vocal abilities as well as his guitar.. (th-cam.com/video/sZAY6Ai0Ozw/w-d-xo.html) - also, Roger and Brian both had the ability to front a band as vocalists.. but they all agreed that "everything sounds better when Freddie sings it"... appreciate your reactions... (p.s. you must also hear this LIVE in 1981 Montreal... if you have not already...supports your point of how "studio versions lead to live versions.." and also how absolutely spectacular Queen were in translating studio to live...)

I bet 67 dollars on Aretha Franklin sang this song under the shower at least once. It's 67 dollars I'll never lose, but unfortunately never will win either.
