    Spoiler: it all has to do with consistency and making quality music people will add to their playlist. Every release I drop now gets thousands of streams from release radar since I’ve built up about 10k followers on Spotify. I get every release on discover weekly as well but the numbers fluctuate, they push some releases more than others. I’ve had my music on these algorithmic playlists as well as radio for years, and I only recently started submitting to editorial. So submitting to editorial doesn’t change anything. It’s all based on user behavior and listening trends. Make good music that targets your audience, stay consistent and Spotify will start to throw you into the algorithm. I’ve released 50+ songs (1-2 per month) consistently on Spotify for years. Some people will reach broader audiences than me with this type of consistency. I never once did paid playlist promotions or anything of that nature btw. Spotify likes when you’re consistent, similar to TH-cam but it’s a bit more rewarding in my opinion. That’s just my personal experience as an artist with no label funding team etc. if you’re an artist reading this, be ready to commit to make a career out of music. It doesn’t come easy and takes years and years unless you somehow have really good connections

    Thanks for all your videos Jesse - your points on getting into TH-cam playlists was a new angle to consider and I think one of the main kick-starting elements of how one of our singles has had a large amount of plays and is more-or-less on autopilot via discover-weekly, gaining higher weekly plays each subsequent week a year after release

    I really appreciate the time you take to share this awesome info. I jumped the gun on my first release, didn’t pitch it or do any pre-promo and missed out on the opportunity for a release radar placement. I did manage to get my popularity score to 43% via playlists and Facebook ads. My song got on discover weekly, but didn’t get much streams and fell off after a week. I’m wondering if this is salvageable. Is discover weekly sometimes an off and on thing?

    • @spotifymarketing
      @spotifymarketing 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      its salvagable, discover weekly is purely based on pop score. So if you get it back up to 43 it will get back on DW, it might take a few weeks though before it happens. If you hit the algorithm a few times, but it keeps falling off, it means that the song is either not strong enough or you didnt target it correctly.

    I use facebook ads to get the algorithm going on small artists that dont have the fans to jumpstart it themselves. I think this works because people that dont want to listen to the song, wouldnt click the ad, they can hear the song there, it filters out the least interested people and only those that actually care to give the song a shot or immediately like it end up on your spotify. Facebook ads dont pollute the algorithm (I agree its obviously not as good as just having a proper fanbase)

    I think everything you said is right on the money when it comes to Discover Weekly OR being put into the Release Radar of someone who doesn't follow you.
    However, from my own anecdotal data, I'm fairly certain that if you submit your song early enough to Spotify's editors then it will be put in ALL your follower's Release Radar. This doesn't mean they will all listen to it but it will at least be in the playlist. From there, if the song does well it will start to show up in non-follower Release Radars to fill in the gaps if that listener's followed artists didn't have enough releases in that week.

    Dope video! Question: If a popularity score and first day engagement is what gets us on DW and RR, this could bolster the argument for posting snippets of songs. I.e. if people ALREADY enjoy the song from the snippets they're much more likely to listen to the song all the way through and add to playlists when it drops.

    • @Musformation

      @@Musformation 1) pre-release (I know you advise against it), because if people hear it 1+ times before it drops, they will know if they want to play it or not when it drops. 2) snippets give people an idea of the song before they stream it. this will send more engaged listeners to your song, theyll listen longer and save it. With a liink, people don't know what to expect, and are thus more likely to skip the song before it ends.

    I’d like to know what you think about Damien Keyes’ last video where he contradicts at least two things you said (and for the record I take your word over his), and they are 1) Damien Keyes says the artist is more important than the music and 2) artists should focus more on new fans than ones they already have… again, I take your word over his because I simply think you know more what you’re talking about, but would like to hear your response

      I’m sure the research assistant that writes his videos for him after they google things and paraphrase from other peoples books really believed that after the few hours they took writing the video for him. But i cant say I watched the video to totally refute it but it sounds as bad as the normal analysis over there.

      I commented earlier on this, to stay you need to keep your pop score high over a longer period of time. If you get DW, your pop score can still eventually slip below 30. You need to keep that fire burning. Also, Ive seen artists get on DW after many weeks of trying, then not see it again for a few weeks and then it randomly comes back.

       @Musformation // Jesse Cannon Hey Jesse! How does posting a visualizer help retain audience attention? I'm wondering if I should make a visualizer or a lyric video or do both and post it on TH-cam. Thanks for reading!

      It’s a reason to call attention to yourself. If your song has lyrics do a lyric video of not visualized.

    Thanks Jesse. Is the fierst day really that crucial to feed data for later ? or its more a sliding scale over weeks ? Where is the sweet spot to informfans via multiplatforms over that short period of time ? eg Posting message to BCamp, TH-cam, FAcebook, mailouts etc etc in 24 hours means spam or overkill if they are multi-subbed. So surely better to space out a bit ?
