    While getting editorial playlists is always good for story building, editorial playlists don't build fanbases. Editorial playlist listeners are largely passive. You need sustained, high volume listenership on these playlists to really make a dent or build reliable revenue, and the truth of the matter is that often the high volume, sustained listenership comes from active listeners seeking out your music and helping trigger algorithms, not from Spotify editorial playlists. Yes, being able to tell other industry "gatekeepers" about the editorial support is good, but the most savvy managers and booking agents know that editorial playlists in 2023 don't mean what they meant in 2015. And while it still certainly doesn't hurt to get on them, they should be less of a goal and more of a byproduct of doing other things well. Yes, create a good pitch like those in this video and celebrate if you land on editorial playlists. But don't have any delusions about what they actually mean or how far they'll move the needle for you.

      Hey, I loved this comment! You've brought up an important point about the changing landscape of music promotion and the role of editorial playlists. They indeed don't mean what they used to, and it's crucial for artists to understand this. I'm doing some research on how musicians can build fanbases more effectively, potentially moving away from the focus on editorial playlists. I’d love to buy you some lunch over a phone call to talk more about this!

      I feel like it could go either way - it's the modern version of having a hit single on radio, people will either enjoy it for the moment then not really think about it 'til it comes on again, or love it so much they go visit/follow the artist page and check out everything else - similar to rushing out and buying the CD of the song you just heard on FM versus just like "huh that was cool" and changing the station.

    I really took the time and submitted my last single 4 solid weeks in advance, wrote what I thought was a good pitch that accurately described my song, thought it sounded well written and professional and got nothing. But at the same time whenever I release a new song everyone gravitates to TH-cam for it instead of Spotify so maybe I need to have my life revolve around Spotify more, eat sleep breathe Spotify, worship Spotify, talk Spotify, dream Spotify, live my life for Spotify. I think that's what they want.

Can I set up a "fake" release for sometime out in the future so I can claim my page and get it updated prior to the actual song I plan to release? Then when it is time to release the real song, just remove the "fake" placeholder one? Is this an option? Thanks in advice for input.

    I’ve always worked jobs that I wasn’t stoked about between projects and not got paid a whole lot for it
    The goal is to build some skills that give me more time and money to put towards my music
    What do you think some good ways to spend money would be?
    I know we hate Facebook ads here
    I’ve heard you talk about just making more content and tik toks, shooting music videos, playing shows, submitting to playlists, making merch etc.
    What else would be a good investment as a musician?

    i noticed releasing music more frequently triggers the algorithm to be more in your favor and then can get you added to playlists later after your song has traction. A lot of the artist and my band included didn’t retain actually fan engagement from being on editorial playlist, because the big playlists arnt designed for new artist discovery causing your song to get plays but not saves and negatively effects your popularity score.. It is a fact major labels own 80% of the playlists on Spotify…and are major share holders….who are also upset independent artists get the same royalty split as signed artists. Just like your not being played during warners radio slot if your with universal. Edgar Allen Poe could write your pitch but if your not distributed by a label your not gna land on big playlists like rap caviar or indie essentials Pitching to playlists are essentially calling the radio station and asking them to play your song lol..yea it could work but algorithm will reward you in more meaningful way if you release twice a month.

    Hi! Our lyrics are in Finnish, so obviously the biggest market for our music is here in Finland. We have always written our pitches in Finnish and have been added to 1-3 playlists with almost each released song. The question is: should we use English instead of Finnish when writing pitches? Does that matter? I always set our current location to our bands hometown here in Finland when writing the pitch, so does Spotify even offer our pitch to playlist curators outside of Finland?
    Spotify does have a lot of great playlist targeted for Finnish listeners and I'm not complaining about getting on those BUT I have seen bands with non-English lyrics end up in bigger playlists across the language barrier, and I'm curious of how that happens. I haven't found a definitive answer to this so I'm reaching out here if you happen to have the answer. Thanks!

    Been watching your channel a long time. Wasn't keeping up for awhile, and watching this video, see you are mixing up your presentation style. A video awhile ago you mentioned the channel wasn't moving forward like you hoped. Is the new presentation style showing good things in your numbers? I'm not expecting an answer, I'm asking bc my impression from this video was that you came across a bit more scripted, less dynamic, and the holding the mic thing felt kinda forced. I REALLY liked how you came across as more conversational in previous video formats, I think that + the mix of memes and humor would be even more engaging.
    Really hope your channel just gets more and more successful, I especially enjoyed it when I first discovered you and checked out your books. I think your personality can shine through even more than it does in this format, and that was what attracted me to your previous work. This format has the same value text-wise, advice is solid, but you don't feel like the center of it, and your performance and presentation just didn't draw me in like previous videos.
    I really hope it doesn't come across as trolly, I LOVE your content and came to this video as it was what I needed and I always enjoy your advice. I just figured I'd comment on it as I remember the background leading up to my experience w this video was that you weren't satisfied w the channel's performance so my guess is you're working on the formatting to make it more successful.

    I'm a bit confused on how often you can pitch a song to editorial playlists. I've heard people say once per 28 days, once per 30 days. But also I've heard people say you can pitch as many songs as you want, as long as the song you previously pitched has gone live, you can pitch another song right after, even if it is released 7 days later. Can anyone clarify this?

    • @retroverse_gaming
      @retroverse_gaming ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am under the impression you can only pitch one song at a time. So once your song has gone live you can pitch another. It's just that it is recommended to give It 4 weeks for each song.

    • @GranMahsBoy

      Lol
      Facts let’s please start keeping it real about this the major three labels own 80% of the playlists and also are major shareholders on Spotify editorial playlists arnt how you break as a new artist in 2023 the majority are paid placements

    • @Musformation
      @Musformation  ปีที่แล้ว

      Fun fact - on chartmetric you can actually see the breakdown of which labels are on each playlist. And while the major labels largely are it, you are wrong that it’s all payola and it’s far more democratized than anything we’ve seen before. Secondly this is why I suggest researching the smaller playlists that feed the big ones since a lot of artists get deals to get on the bigger playlists from being on the smaller one. In other videos I’ve debunked this 80% statistic as it’s total bullshit

    • @GranMahsBoy
      @GranMahsBoy ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Musformation no it isn’t more democratized. Labels specifically now have a department designated to put artists on playlists. Artists are now a charged a budget for playlist placement on all dsps (just like radio). It’s the exact same as payola. I’m not against playlists or m just saying pretending it’s a game changer is using dated info. With the trends of how much music is coming out daily your shooting your self in the foot waiting every 30 days to release because you wanna get on a playlist. If we’re being really technical it’s a bad thing for a new artists with no traction to even get on a playlists because it jumbled up all your data. A lot of marketing firms in the industry don’t use playlists when tryna break new artists for that specific reason. Landing on rap caviar sounds great hella plays for a new artists. Those are all vanity points because after your removed from the playlist you have to analyze the plays in your stats coming from almost every single city in the world leaving you clueless where or how to isolate your true fan base. Again big fan of yours lol but playlist smoke screen is my biggest pet peeve it’s almost like cruel hope for NEW artist
