My experience in Thai hospitals were superior.
I miss those standard's. Much better than in Canada.
I was even in a rural town in southern Thailand and was treated with the utmost dignity and superior customer service.
Technology and standards at par, and even slightly better than what I have available here.

I've found medical care in Thailand excellent and rivals anything in the UK, where I'm from - and without the wait!

In 2015 I had a comprehensive physical exam done at Bangkok General Hospital costing $592.45 where I was diagnosed with pneumonia. A few months later after filing a claim, my Blue Cross affiliated plan reimbursed me $520.92. My final cost was $71.53.
In 2019 a dental crown would cost me $1200 in the state where I live. With my dental insurance, I would pay $857 there. I had my crown done at Bangkok's Thantakit Dental Clinic. With their 10% cash discount I paid $568.93. My dental insurance reimbursed me $332.16 for this 'out of network' service for the crown. My final cost was $236.77.

That's a great price for the colonoscopy, I did mine last year here in Dallas at age 48, insurance was billed $2100 (I owed nothing out of pocket) but that was without any extras as nothing abnormal was found in the procedure. I wished they offered the comprehensive health check package here in the US for a fixed fee, would make things so much easier. I get mine done whenever i'm in India where they have similar packages, in India it costs under $100 and i've had a fantastic experience but good to know it's an option in Thailand as well.

Hi! Aren't the full health check plans great? Sure love the option of going in and not having to be passed from Dr to Dr to get a referral for so many tests. Plus, to have it done at such an affordable price, we were so pleased! Thanks for watching - Cheers 🍻

I have lived in Chiang Mai for 45 years, as an Expat. I regularly use Chiang Mai Ram hospital, it's not like any hospital or clinic in the States. Waiting times for doctors with appointments is no more than 15 minutes. This hospital has all the facilities needed except for Kidney dialysis, which is handled at the Government Hospital, Suan Dork. The only specialty Thailand doesn't have is Podiatrist. Cases that require Podiatrist care are sometimes handled by Orthopedist, but they don't have the rigorous 8 year training needed to operate on ankles and feet.

I have nerve damage in my back and last time i was in Bangkok i made an appointment to see a neurosurgeon at the Bangkok hospital. It was amazing i was seen on the very day i made the appointment and offered a MRI the same afternoon the health care is fantastic. I live in the uk and the NHS national health service is not fit for purpose. Its virtually impossible to get a doctors appointment and if you do its a 3 to 4 week waiting time, I've been waiting 12 months to get to see my dentist also Nurses and ambulance staff are constantly on strike at the moment. If you get cancer in the uk at the moment it could well be a death sentence, they really don't care. I'm 53 and i would move to Thailand just for the health care.

We have visited Thailand several times and we’re not aware of the quality of the medical services and we’re pleased to watch as you went through the medical. I was blown away at the convenience and speed that the tests were performed. The final costs were a surprise. We are Canadian Snowbirds who rely on the Canadian health system and we wish things would be similar to your experience in Thailand. Excellent video and keep up the good work, we will be watching. Well done guys. Very useful to see the quality and cleanliness of the hospital. Very reasonable prices. The colonoscopy could be the best $ $ you ever spent in your life Brian. In NZ bowel cancer is our biggest killer, and so curable if found early.
Everyone over 50 should have one, but it will cost $3 - 4000, depending on whether you have polyps removed., probably the same or more in the US.
I have been an endoscopy nurse, and if you don’t have health insurance privately it is difficult to get one as the waiting list is long in the public system. Good luck with the preparation 🤪😂

@@BrianandCarrie I was really impressed with the number of tests you had as well - and offering to schedule your procedure the very next day! Not going to start my usual rant about medical insurance in the US, but will only say that if a GP codes it as a wellness visit with my insurance, (s)he can't do anything else during the appt. Nothing. Otherwise, I'm only allowed to address TWO issues per appt and will have to go back for anything additional! My insurance company literally told me I had to just keep going back until all my questions were addressed two-at-a-time with another copay each visit. I'd always been so efficient with a bullet point list that my previous doctor said we got more done in 15 minutes than any appt the rest of his day. No more. I haven't been sick or gone to the doctor for anything in over four years -- just not worth it here.

We have found that medical care is on par with what we had received in the US. It was something that we didn't know before leaving. It is nice to know that we can get checks ups and dental care most anywhere we go.

Excellent video. Thanks for this. You went to one of the higher cost hospitals here and got care for about half in the US. I have a Thai wife so we go to the government hospital here in Bangkok which is also the top medical school in Thailand. The doctors speak English though few nurses do which why it helps to speak Thai. My comparable check is about $60 also in excellent facilities.

Hi Brian and Carrie, I love this video as most TH-camrs don’t really address this subject. Thanks for sharing the cost so your viewers know what to expect in the event they need these tests in a foreign country. Many commented here asking whether the travel insurance would cover these expenses. Hey guys. Just discovered your channel thanks to your Portugal videos. We recently left Chiang Mai after a few months of being there. Hope you are enjoying it as much as we did. This is a great informative video. We had similar health screenings and a colonoscopy done in Penang, Malaysia. The experience was very similar to yours. Very efficient and affordable. Our costs were a bit less, especially for the colonoscopy. Regardless, the prices are amazingly affordable compared to the U.S. and the experience was very pleasant. I also had my shoulder looked at by an Ortho and had an MRI performed. That only cost $260 total. Amazing! We are considering going back to Malaysia for our next health screening this summer. Maybe Kuala Lumpur this time. Thanks for sharing your experience ☺️

Different hospitals have different costs and levels of service.
The Government hospitals tend like many state hospitals to be underfunded and understaffed, costs are low, waiting is long and indeed not everything is available especially in the rural areas.
Then the non-state hospitals have a low, medium and high level sector which is not saying any are better than the rest but like a hotel it’s a 1, 2, 3, star service choice with waiting time and levels of accommodation being different
Medical insurance is a must in Thailand, without it you pay - no state cover without paying

Great overview of your experience! So inconceivable why the USA doesn’t have a similar system of providing comprehensive wellness checks at a reasonable fee. Question regarding your Colonoscopy. I was surprised you were able to schedule a colonoscopy so quickly. Normally, you have to undergone a week long “cleanse” to empty your bowel s of all matter in order to get a “clear” picture to see any growths/polyps. Did your colonoscopy involve a cleanse, anesthesia , etc?

Great, colo in two days. I had a waiting time of 6 weeks, after I had to beg them and tell about my granny going from us that way. I paid 35 bucks or so, on Medicare. But I wouldn't mind paying what you did, if I wanted it NOW. Colo is so important. Best friend of mine, recently passed after never having one, 3 weeks after stage 4 diagnosis. Another chapter is dental, and as we know, not covered in the US by any insurance. I mean, serious dental. A friend of mine had it all done in Bangkok, and she loved it. I had a serious problem, about 8 years back, having grown up with no fluoride in the water, and my teeth were wrecks. Had a set of crowns 12 years earlier, all fused into two pieces, upper jaw. , but they all fell out one day. Went to a dentist on Maui, where I live, they wanted 35K, and 3 months. Friends of mine bought a house for 15K or so in a small Hungarian town, that has 129 dental clinics. and they told me what the best one is. Flew there two days later, they did a perfect job, charging me 3K, and I lived for free in the hotel above the all in house clinic for 5 nights. That's all it took. Still happy all the years later. Any major dental problems, I will on the plane again.

Yes, dental is another huge issue in the states. Kinda one reason we are in Turkey right now. I (Carrie) have a dental appointment for work I need done. Pretty interesting info. It must be super hard eating healthy when you’re on a permanent vacation. I’m in Canada and for all of those tests, my cost would have been free. The prescription I just filled, with coverage was just over $7. Wait times, however, is Canada’s number 1 issue. 2 weeks to see the doctor if you have one. Many don’t. And months to get a colonoscopy unless there are red flags. Plus, my husbands doctor recently told him they used to recommend colonoscopies at 50 but don’t anymore. Snack packs or coffee…lol…awesome service! Curious about the 2 types of mammograms though? I’ve never heard of that. Take care!

Hi! We are finding it easier here in SE Asia to eat healthier as the portion sizes are smaller and there are plenty of veggie options. But the night markets and the street food options are hard to pass up all the time - moderation is key 😂.
It is sad how it seems to be the standard of testing recommendation seems to be changing - I've heard that about a few tests that used to be standard at a specific age. Makes you wonder if that all comes down to cost? As for the mammograms, I wanted to have the regular one as well as an ultrasound. This is something I've needed in the past to rule out any issues and I just felt I would be more comfortable having that here as well. Thanks so much for watching! Cheers 🍻

In CM, Ram and Bangkok are the best hospitals, but the costs for the former have rocketed exponentially in the last few years.

I agree. I remember when CM Ram committed to medical service for foreigners, prices blew up in the next year or so. Lanna Hospital was a good alternative without the excessive prices, but McCormick Hospital was a practical and Thai-driven prices. I moved elsewhere 4 yrs ago so my feedback may be outdated.

Why did your insurance not pay?

Wow, the doctors in Turkey have never checked my blood pressure (I'm on medication for high bp), nor have they ever listened to my heart and lungs, I've never actually seen a doctor here with a stethoscope. I've seen three doctors and have been to the hospital for infection. I'm 72 years old.

Hi. Quick question. You mentioned you had Cigna coverage before. Do you still have it? Why didn't Cigna covered all this testing?

Hi Orlando! Our Cigna Global Plan we chose doesn't cover preventative care, so these costs were out of pocket. We intentionally chose the coverage we have knowing preventative care outside the states is typically quite affordable. Thanks for watching! Cheers 🍻
