We absolutely love what we are doing - living a life of full-time travel. But, with it comes many not so pretty sides that many aren't aware of. Do you travel full-time? Do any of the things we mention in this video sound familar, or do you have other areas that you have experienced? Cheers 🍻

I have only experienced 33 countries and 8-9 cruises. The reason we like cruising is to sample a port like the one in Costa Rica, which really like. We would return for 2 weeks to see much more of the country. So glad we did.
The longest I've stayed in a country is 3 weeks which was Bali and Thailand. But I like the idea of staying longer and keeping a home base to explore from there. Question: For the countries, cities or villages that you two have visited. Which one's would you go back to or go back to live? Peace

We started traveling full time in Europe and it has been over 2 months now. My husband and I and my 4 year old daughter are now exhausted. Everything you’ve said here is so true. But no regrets, I’m grateful we’re able to do this.

Wow, what a great video! I'm only 2 months into this nomadic lifestyle and I can totally relate to the various topics you discussed. I've chosen to do 2 weeks at a location before moving on to the next one. I really hate packing, unpacking, moving too often. Having 2 weeks gives me enough time to do sightseeing but also the extra time to just hang out, get into a routine, chill out in the apartment, or do some planning. Those days of not doing anything make you feel more like you are living there rather than being on vacation. I've also found that friends and family think I’m on one big vacation where every day is excitement, but that's not what it is. And I don’t want it to be like that! Like you said, “It's regular living…you’re just living somewhere else.” Very well put!
I also don’t have a home base. I plan to go back to the states twice a year, for a few weeks in the summer and then again around Christmas/New Years.
The way I've been handling the planning issue is that I only do trip planning on the weekends. Since I've retired I've noticed that the weekends are when all the working people are out doing the things they couldn't do during the week, so places are crowded and hectic. And I’m seeing it’s like that everywhere in the world. So I do all my activities during the week when the workers are at work, and then stay in and do things like planning on the weekends to avoid the crowds.
Thanks for keeping it real and sharing the down sides of this lifestyle. It’s really important for everyone considering it to know all sides. But despite the little issues, I definitely love living this way! It’s so liberating! 😊

My trips are longer now and I can relate to getting tired. Slow travel seems much more sustainable long term. I color code my travel days in my itinerary with bright yellow, and I know if I see too much yellow that I’ve been a little too ambitious putting together the itinerary and need to slow things down down and skip a few spots.

This video right here I thought I wanted. That i would enjoy full time travel, however I did realize after months of travel I don't want it. It did lead to burn out, tiring, exhausted in living out of suitcase & lack of homemade meals. I am moving abroad to be in Europe (Portugal) full time & have a base to travel from. I need this emotionally, physically & finicially. Good luck to you both.

      So great to have choices
Our choice to live at almost 9,000 ft in a tiny Colorado mountain village is not for most people - most people want a vacation here or to spend the summer here away from their home of heat and humidity
But we ❤ having 4 real seasons and really living in the mountains
Traveling full time is not for most people - most people want to travel some - like us 😊 but full time travel is for you
The financial freedom to live the lifestyle we want is everything!

The thing I find about traveling like this is that all the little decisions we take for granted every day are much more difficult each time you start over. "where's the grocery store" "what do I want to eat" "where am I going to exercise" "how do I get to XYZ". Having to re learn all of those every time you move locations begins to take it's toll after a while. Excellent video!!

Aside from the content you've shared (which I find extremely helpful), I really love the dynamic between you both. It's obvious you know each other EXTREMELY well as travel is the fastest way to see how one deals with stress and unfamiliar surroundings as well as strange food issues, lol. It's obvious you truly love each other and you are both funny and patient. There are many youtube videos out there for every place on the planet but your videos are very well made and I've noticed they just get better and better as you become experienced. I simply can't watch another 20-30 yr old eat and take selfies so it's refreshing to hear what your opinion is as I value it. Keep up the good work and thank you for paving the way for the rest of us!

As someone who hasn't lived in his home country for almost a decade, it's quite entertaining to me watching you guys learn and grow as you continue to travel. Lots of truths in this video!
My girlfriend and I wouldn't change our lifestyle for anything, but it's true that it can be quite exhausting. Unlike you guys though, my (common-law) girlfriend is European, so I am able to stay in a lot of places or get visas through her, which makes things easier within the EU. We typically establish a "home-base" for at least 6 months to a year or two, and explore surrounding countries during that time. We've down short term stays and jumping around, and it's much more exhausting.
When you guys end up in Asia, it will be much easier to have a "base", if that's what you desire.
Totally wanna grab a drink with you guys some day. It may seen like you're complaining to some, but I know exactly where you're coming from. 😂

Hi, Brandon! Someday we do plan on establishing a "home base" to travel from for long periods of time. We really like the Algarve region. LOVED this video! I kind of stumbled onto your channel. We’re not full time travelers yet but we travel now for a month at a time in the US and abroad. You’re definitely NOT whining. There’s nothing I hate more than when a youtuber makes what they’re doing seem like it’s effortless and the rest of us are incapable because we struggle.
All of these were great tips. Could you possibly link the currency exchange apps and others you found helpful?
Traveling in South and Central America now, I would definitely say that patience is key and to have some flexibility built into your travel plans! And even if something looks close mileage wise it may take double or triple the time to actually get there because of the infrastructure or local traffic.
I’d also say that travelers should be aware of the most used mode of transportation in that country and not doggedly stick to what they’re used to-for instance taking the water taxis in Bangkok instead of renting a car or taking the local buses in Panama instead of driving or flying. And many countries don’t allow uber or lyft except in big cities and then it may not be the best option.
And just because it’s an American founded company (big car rental companies) they are run by and are subject to the laws of the country you’re in which maybe different than your countries laws.

What a truthful summary of some of the downsides of travelling abroad! Spot on!! I wish we had watched this before our 3 month trip to Europe. We ended up doing: 10 trains, 18 buses, 2 gondolas, 3 rental cars, 2 river cruises, 1 cruise ship, 22+ubers, 2 Trams, 1 tuk tuk, 4 bus connectors, 5 airport shuttles, 2 taxis, 11 plane rides and 17 accomodations. We were utterly exhausted from all the physical and mental work. It's so nice to be home again and stable. We really do take for granted the words of Dorothy. Having said all that... we all only live once so we commend you both on your smarts and sense of adventure!

I have traveled a fair bit and you have hit all the points that can make travel exhausting: Different time zones, figuring out what is in the kitchen, different mattresses that can give you back pain, electricity or internet gone for hours or the whole day (yikes), packing, unpacking. At times, you wake up and think - where am I today, you have to turn on light to see where is the bathroom and where you stored your toiletries, have to sleep on the airport/bus station, deal with issues as they come (late bus and missing connection).
I have always like slow travel, if I can afford it (time permits). That gives me time to absorb the place.

Great way to finish the video, I think it must become your signature. Definitely good info for travelers that are looking for (full time travel) You now have a year plus experience and will go out next time feeling more ready for all challenges. We personally go out 2-3 months at a time and always come home for 2-3 months - Gives us time in a relaxed environment (home)to plan out the next trip. At one time I wanted FULL time, but my wife talked me out of selling the house. I'm so glad she did. It also appears like one of yall does most of the planning, reservations and research video editing that goes behind long term travel. We try to do a trip around an event, like Le Tour de France or hiking an area in Patagonia . Anyway, I we look forward to the next videos, we tried doing videos but at the end of the day were always to tired. By the way this was good editing with all the travel clips.

I have to agree with Carrie's 5 month intervals. After traveling 10 winters in our RV throughout Mexico, Belize and Guatemala, we have come down to 5 months in one place, Mazatlan, Mexico! Then 5 months in our home state of Colorado (near mother and daughter) and 2 months traveling in the RV in the US. Plus, it gives us time to visit other family, do taxes and regroup. Fortunately we have a home base and great neighbors to look forward to every summer. Call us snowbirds that still have a travel bug.

Traveling on land we had professional drivers, we flew commercial and private jets, etc. I'd call my mom more than I ever did when I lived 20 minutes away. Arriving back home was the cherry on top.

Regarding ATMs....be aware that the exchange rates are not the same at all ATMs. I recently found this in Croatia that some ATMs exchange rate can be 20-30% higher than the "official" rate that you will find on the internet. This is particularly true in super popular tourist sites....especially in the "Old Town" areas near where cruise passengers arrive. My best experience was when I used the ATMs that were actually owned/operated by the Bank of Zagreb or Bank of XYZ country that you are visiting. Ditto for currency exchange places especially in airports.

This was extremely relatable and comforting as it helps you realize it's not just you when you start to feel a certain way at times. Always grateful for your truthfulness and not the always pretentiousness express by so many about this lifestyle. No matter the few downsides, I too love this life. I solo travel, seeing you two, I have a minute of wishing I had a partner, not necessarily romantic, to be on this journey with and then I think how much I don't feel like dealing with anyone else's moods on top of my own. I couldn't travel the way you guys are doing it. It can be exhausting and like you said, you can find yourself not living in the moment because you have to research the next location constantly. I would need a home base somewhere, even if it was just an apartment in a favourite city or town in Europe/America. There's going to come a time when you just don't want to move on to the next place, because you HAVE to. I would have to have my own space to come back to and decompress for a month or two. Also, if virus 2.0 gets unleashed, I want the ability to be at home, not stuck in an Air BNB for 6 months or more.

Our favorite countries are Portugal and Spain. We're out there every day seeing the sights, but we get tired of taxis and my wife gets tired of using public restrooms. And it seems that right when we've figured out where things are, it's time to pack up and leave. The worst is coming home and looking up the places you visited and realizing that you missed seeing something beautiful that was nearby. Another thing is the international airports make you walk a long way to get to your gate or make you go through security (again) before boarding your connecting flight.

Having just tried to go from Funchal Madeira to Seville today, and being forced to check our luggage in Funchal, we are without our luggage tonight due to air traffic control delays. But as others have said, you get a lot of of what you describe on on the short trip as well. We are exhausted and look forward to our down day tomorrow. So we totally agree with the hassles that travel introduces. BTW, Funchal is not a place that fits your target of $2000/month or having more than a few historical learning opportunities even though it was recommended to you as potential location to try out. It was expensive compared to Spain, crowded in November, and doesn’t offer much of options to walk to in town besides a restaurant, bar, or some event. Very hilly and that really restricts where you can go without a car. No beaches or marinas, but great weather and Heinz catsup. Love your videos!

We're retired and returned to our favourite slow method of travel. We choose our next location if it's within a four hour bus ride. We seem to stay about a week in many locations deciding suddenly, the night before we leave, which direction we'll get a bus towards in the morning. We haven't struggled getting a bus within an hour of arriving at the bus station; or accomodation once we arrive. Occasionally one of us will sit in a cafe while the other scouts an area looking at options. Some special place may keep us for three weeks, but that seems to be our max so far. This system has worked well in Latin America and Asia in recent years. Do you think that system will work in Europe. We haven't been there in years, so I think we'll have to adjust and plan, a little, but I'm hoping not.

Hey Brian and Carrie, great video. I wanted to give you a tip since you are traveling a lot and getting out cash. Please look into Revolut, or Wise for exchanging currency virtually and getting a credit card of theirs. You only withdrawal what you need and there isn’t a fee at ATMs you pay the fee (which is very small if you have the free plans) with in the app when you need to exchange money. It’s also very safe to protect your ATM card from being used. I’ve used it for 3 years while I live and travel and Europe, I’m always a US citizen. It works great with your US bank. Hope that helps you not have extra cash you don’t need. Thanks for your content, it’s really great!

I'm just heading off for 2-3 months of expat travel in Asia so finding this channel was good timing. You make some great points. It's true, constant travel can be tiring and stressful at times. I think 4 weeks+ is a good rule of thumb to allow you to create routines and feel more like a local in a new place. It's more immersive & you feel less like a tourist. Even though the idea of random nomadic adventure sounds great, most of us need at least some structure in our week to feel grounded. I find a gym, local coffee spots and so on and that often helps to create at least a bit of that structure. I've found places that have at least reasonable English spoken are a big help as well.
Currency wise, apps like Wise or Revolut are an absolute game changer. No need to pay crazy fees on your home country credit or debit cards. so convenient.

As ever a hugely useful and interesting video. You are doing what I did in my 20's, when I travelled around South East Asia, but you are being way more ambitious than I was. I was really tired by it, and I'm an amatuer boxer who used to train twice a day. So I don't think it has anything to do with age. Travelling is both mentally and physically exhausting. I travelled on my own, occasionally joining groups. To travel as a couple, as I do now with my wife, is a brilliant way of stess stesting a relationship. You are clearly so much more than husband and wife, you are best friends, because if you weren't you wouldn't have made it a month, much less a year. For this and many other reasons your video's are inspirational, brave, loving, informative, funny and honest. If you are ever in or near Alicante, Spain, or Brighton, England my wife and I would love to buy you both a beer

Thanks for sharing these ugly truths! We have been travelling since 2017, and the only way we've been able to do this and not get burnt out is by embracing slow travel! We aim to spend a minimum of 1 month in a country... but that went a bit haywire in Portugal as we're only just getting ready to leave after TWO amazing years here! 🇵🇹❤ Roll on the Middle East and finally heading back to New Zealand to see my family after 4 years! ~ Mandy 😀😁

This is pretty much how we roll too. We spend a month in a great place, working, catching up and planning, and just living, then we take a week or two and hit all the sights. It seems to work the best for us.

@@lostamonglocals5382 We retired in our 40s, in August 2017, and have been travelling ever since! We started our TH-cam channel as a hobby, and as a way to share information with other travellers, but sometimes it can seem like a full time job 😉🤣 ~ Mandy

"Card Eating" happened to us in South Africa (Johannesburg airport). The ATM was outside the bank inside the airport. It wasted our 2 hours (and I got a headache) but we finally got our card back. Schwab debit card is one of the best when it comes to using ATMs in Europe.

Enjoyed your videos! Looking forward to 2023 escapade’s. Especially in Asia. When I visited China, the conditions were “harsh” to me. Interested to see how you both fair. I do hope you have planned to see Costa Rica while in Central America. That place was awesome to me. Have happy and safe travels. I will be watching!

Thank you so much for sharing. I'm getting close, but planning to take off on my own full-time, slow travel in the Spring of 2023. Some points do make me nervous, but overall I still feel this is the right next step for me. Thanks for posting!

very true, I am preparing for a long ish trip 10+ months. I have just started doing research. When you are moving often it does get tiring and also takes a bit o time to plan. You forget aobut. in the long run is worth it :)

Hi both, love your channel and very informative. Very genuine and very real. I must confess that these generic video bits you throw in showing random people doing things is really distracting and personally I prefer watching you guys. Just a bit of feedback. All that stuff isn't needed. Thanks for all you do. Steve

Traveled five years ago in Europe staying at 20 Airbnb's. I spent many a night rereading reviews of noisy places we were staying at trying to understand why no one else had the same issues we were having. You find out owners beg you not to write bad reviews and if anyone even hints at a problem, realize it is probably a big problem. Outside of staying in luxury hotels, good accommodations are a significant challenge. but in the end, traveling abroad is the best.

Great video and thanks for the honesty. We recently returned from a month exploring four Portuguese cities trying to decide if short or long term living there would suit us. Even with just a short version of what you've been experiencing over the past year or so, I can really relate to all of your experience and wise advice. It's exhausting! We know now that having a home base is important to us - we are not nomadic. :) We will explore a different country next year and who knows what we will discover. I really enjoy your channel and wish the best for you.

3 years in, 90% Airbnb, you are spot on. I would add a couple things: getting your haircut/finding a dentist can be challenging. Also, we have a PO Box in South Dakota as our "permanent" address (bonus: no state income tax and easy to become a resident) BUT some financial institutions do not recognize the PO Box address as legitimate (even though it is!). This was a big hassle.

    • @BrianandCarrie
      @BrianandCarrie  ปีที่แล้ว

Thank you! We got lucky in Portugal and found a dentist within walking distance from our place but not having your own is difficult. We each suddenly needed dental care and the place was fantastic. My hair (Brian) is easy. There's a barber shop on every corner. 😆 We use our parent's address in our hometown of Bellingham, WA. we don't have state income tax either. Thank you for watching and safe travels!!
      Cheers!!

We travel 2-3 mths a year, but I’m always happy to get home as we miss our hobbies and friends. We both play on an orchestra (Saxophone) plus I volunteer in a Museum and he plays golf and goes hill walking with friends. He also does local archaeology. We love home life- so start missing it at about 6-8 weeks.
We are very hobby oriented and we can’t do this when travelling. I can’t really understand the attraction of full time travel it seems like a job- reinventing a home constantly and making/breaking relationships constantly.

      Appreciate this - thanks
Great to have the financial freedom to have the lifestyle we love - we’re more in line with the couple here who also don’t want to travel full time
      We enjoy our travel vacations
But most people don’t want to live in our tiny mountain village at 9,000 ft full time like we do 😊
We also love having canine companions in our lives
Aren’t we all just so fortunate
