Total respect for anyone who can take these things apart and put them back together without having any bits left over but imagine coming up with the design for it in the first place.
It must be a very exclusive list of engineers who have the skill and knowledge to successfully carry out this work. I have always found gearbox internals to be a thing of engineering beauty. Even a basic five speed is impressive but this one just blows my mind. I could quite literally display those gears as art in my house. Well done Sir.
This video is a great way of stamping on those who would question labour rates in top level specialist work. Well done ol son, I know my RS6 will be in great hands, when I get it.
Mind blowing stuff, I was bricking it just watching. Ricky is a mechanical genius, the complexity of those gear boxes is unbelievable and these are put together on the production lines?wowzers!
Complicated is a huge understatement. Immense gearbox. Hugely entertaining to watch. Those little ball bearings and blocks must be a feckin nightmare when putting it back together.
For all the bants, this man is hiding some serious talent & knowledge. He’s super conscientious and mechanically sympathetic, but hides behind a carefree persona - don’t be fooled. The way he stripped that box, he’s done that a 1000 times and knows Exactly what he’s going to find and exactly what’s needed. A true craftsman and the reason he’s the number one go to guy. Keep up the great vids and technical content. 5⭐️
Hey up rick that's a super cool video even without the electronic stuff it's a lot of parts to deal with, really like how you remove bits place and move on top stuff mate
The idea that a piece of kit so chunky and substantial could rely on those tiny springs and blocks just boggles my mind. Also the fact that there are electronics buried in there in a pool of oil enduring all the heat and vibration.
Just a general comment. I really appreciate your engineering skills. Congratulations on winning both your bike categories and it was good to speak to you at Donington.
I was pissing myself laughing at Karl the other day on an old episode. I like the banter nathan brings with his cultered humour. I cant help thinking how the dynamics will change off camera aswell as on camera Ricky. Also, i really enjoyed the onboards with Nige and yourself at Combe with the Lambo and the R8. Cracking channel. Ive been glued to wacthing since discovery. Ive more confidence in engine building now and hopefully gunna have a crack at a build next year on a Z16 lump for me next acquisition. Maybe Matt could help. Hello Mitch and Kate too.
Im pretty sure the number's they give all those cars 520 650 700 720 etc are roughly how long it would take mei in days to even do half of that 🤣👍🏼 top work mate.. Man's a genius 👏
F*** me that’s a huge job!!! That’s worse than an engine build. At least engine builds are satisfying to do, that’s just a stressful pain! Respect my man!!! 👍
Love the videos. New binge watch. Been deciding to buy my 1st supercar for a while now. Choice between Carrera gts and a gen2 R8. Definitely going gen2 now
Great video as always Ricky! One for your ‘Question Time’; I’ve a gen1.5 v10 plus that Audi found a small weep on the dl800. They are replacing the whole unit which sounds crazy! Apparently there was a technical bulletin to run through some steps, tighten bits, etc.. but that didn’t fix it. What do you think would have been the problem and if anyone out of warranty had a similar experience would you be able to fix (assuming a leak)? Also if they are replacing the gearbox would that mean the mech unit, clutch, etc.. would all be new as it looks like it’s all internal? Thanks! Che
Fair play to you for doing work like this, I understand you not showing your special tool bit but you would have to be kin brave to try and do something like this unless you were really confident you knew what you were doing, extremely complicated 😳 Question for you, I have a MK4 1.8T and am planning to do a bigger turbo build on, already mapped and the normal things done, have a budget of around 5k would this be the type of work you could do and do you think the budget is realistic as will need to do rods etc 350 to 400 bhp would be the gole, love your videos, funny accents, banter and clips etc 😬👍🏻
Ricky what's the reason to transport the gearbox to you full of oil if it's going to get fully stripped down? You're in a better mood today thankfully! Onwards and upwards pal
Rick; will you keep the engine room in unit one just for gearbox rebuilds/repairs and have unit two just for engines and clean of gearboxes? Also in the new unit what do you use for exhaust fume extraction and will you have fire suppression system installed at a later date as we all know what insurance companies are like. All the best.
Ricky...Question.. how long has it taken you to build up your selection of tools and what percentage do you use daily and some specialist tools you only use rarely? Keep up the great videos 👍
My upmost respect to you f knows how you remember all that shite 👏👏👏👏👏you’ve got some knowledge rattling around upstairs Ricky and chicken wing arms struggling with those gears 😂😂😂.Great watch 👏👏👏and once again fair play to you Ricky
Hi a funny gearbox video is by speedcar99. He is taking a automatic gearbox apart to show how it works. The things and spring just flying off the is a maize with bearing balls that also jumps out 😮. Nobody would be able to put the gearbox back again.
10:45 same bloody issue that kills the VW DSGs. Metal accumulates on the shift fork magnets, mech unit can't sense where the forks are, freaks out, you get stuck on the side of the road.
Bloody hell exploding clutches everywhere, complex mech unit, oil, hydraulics, electronics springs, balls, magnetic bits. My feckin head hurts! Rather you than me 😮
Never going to do this, never going to have one of these cars (Lambo by choice), unless Lottery winnings! Never going to get the 50 minutes and 11 seconds back! ......but, my inner geek doesn't care. That was cool bananas!
Total respect for anyone who can take these things apart and put them back together without having any bits left over but imagine coming up with the design for it in the first place.
The complexity of this DL800 is mind-boggling. Not sure how you remember all the sequences of how it comes apart/goes together. Impressive stuff!
That's why you film taking it apart...
I had to reseal a transmission case on a 7 speed DSG on a S5, but have a whole new respect for what you are doing.
It must be a very exclusive list of engineers who have the skill and knowledge to successfully carry out this work.

You clever man. Whatever you charge it’s definitely not enough.
Your knowledge is fvckin amazing.
That looks like the best 3d puzzle ever.
Respect x1000000.
Can’t wait to see the finished product. 👍
genius at work
And another thing. How the bloody hell do you remember to put it all back together! Massive respect.
Stripping down a drive Axle on a lorry NP, you are 10x....next level bro 💯 I salute you man....🙌
Nuts !! I’m a mechanic and that gives me anxiety just watching it 🙈😂
Loving the video. Haven't got to the UB40 bit yet, but looking forward to it 😂😂😂😂😂
Hey up rick that's a super cool video even without the electronic stuff it's a lot of parts to deal with, really like how you remove bits place and move on top stuff mate
full marks to dodson makig the uprated parts
Like watching the Watch Repair channel....just with bigger bits 😃
Wow, and OMG! A master at work!!
The idea that a piece of kit so chunky and substantial could rely on those tiny springs and blocks just boggles my mind. Also the fact that there are electronics buried in there in a pool of oil enduring all the heat and vibration.
How on earth you remember what goes back where ill never know 😂
You are a transmission surgeon for sure! Fantastic to watch! Cheers
Full bore genius level skills on show . Insanely impressive.
Just a general comment. I really appreciate your engineering skills. Congratulations on winning both your bike categories and it was good to speak to you at Donington.
Loving the tech posts Ricky, awesome bro. Keep doing what you're doing's love it 💯👉🔥👍
Another great video, always find gearbox strip/rebuild very interesting 👍

Amazing pure gearbox surgery
Take my hat off to you well done

Mate, your a genius. How the F do you know what goes where and how to put it together ??? Brilluantb
What is the gain/benefit from upgrading the internals ?
To handle more power
Great video but please put on some safety specs when you're using the hydraulic press.
Fair play to you mate, I've got stomach cramps with anxiety watching this ...
great job lad as always lot ov work sure ul get it sorted next video please
Awesome job, thanks gents.

Lovely vid thank you, what is the benifit of the DODSON internals? Are they able to handle more"umpty"?(torque)?
You are a very talented clever man 👌
The mechanic is OK as well 😂😂😂
😂🤪
i'm 64 but if i was a kid I would love to be an apprentice there, would be sooo skiled and learn soo much, you cant buy that .

Even watching from safe distance…
Ricky...Question.. how long has it taken you to build up your selection of tools and what percentage do you use daily and some specialist tools you only use rarely? Keep up the great videos 👍
The rat in my kitchen bit had me bustin' a gut!!! Fkin hilarious!! :)
Top job Rick...all that done in under an hr. 😂
Hey Rick, how do you put this back together? Are you following manual, playback your video or you remember all this? Impressive either way!
Agree... The onscreen comments are superfluous 👍
It is actually "Graziano transmissioni" (now "Dana Graziano")gearbox, not Borg Wagner.
Colin Chapman said “ add lightness “ , I always thought that meant leaving parts out! Seems every day is a learning day…
My upmost respect to you f knows how you remember all that shite 👏👏👏👏👏you’ve got some knowledge rattling around upstairs Ricky and chicken wing arms struggling with those gears 😂😂😂.Great watch 👏👏👏and once again fair play to you Ricky
And i thought i was a genius back in the day being able to split a vw o2a box!
How the bloody hell do you remember how that gets put back together 😮
With you 100% on UB40

If your not careful ,one day Karl's gonna knock your blok off !
He would have to catch me first! 😂
i thought they were Graziano units?
Did you not do one like this in Israel some time ago? Always good to see you in the guts though. Even if it is a PITA.
have you ever rebuilt a gearbox and ended up with 8 reverse and one forward gears? 😉
Bloody hell exploding clutches everywhere, complex mech unit, oil, hydraulics, electronics springs, balls, magnetic bits. My feckin head hurts! Rather you than me 😮
I'm just thinkin if I had to reassemble that gearbox to save my life I would just have to welcome death ffs 🙈😂👌
Does anything faze this guy? Reminds me of a 1000 piece 3D jigsaw puzzle.
Ya iz a geniuz 😂✌🏼
Great video and yes Ub40 are absolute wank
There a rat in me kitchen what am a gonna do? 😂
@@CraigMansfield 😂😂😂
How do you remember what goes back where with no nuts and bolts and springs left over lol
Something is not right if no bolts are left over.

Simples.....?. Not..... my brain aches just watching....
Feck that!!
Not big enough - that’s what she said.
I will do a push-up for every like this gets
Those screen comments are really irritating, Dav! Please don’t do it again…
Hahaha why have u done that??? We can hear him perfectly
For those of us who are profoundly deaf from engine noise they are quite helpful
I like them, carry on
Nah keep them coming to annoy pedantic people like you.
I like the notes because I don't know the company names. Maybe compromise and make them smaller, tuck them in a corner.
100% right about UB40, utter garbage.
Who actually thinks this stuff (transmissions, motors etc)
im just writing a serious comment, theres nothing funny about that job, even sarcasm would be offensive.
Honestly watching this was giving me anxiety. Maximum respect Sir 🫡
