How did I ever miss this? Just hysterically plotted out & Hal Roach put his magic touch to the film, due to his early years in slapstick, silent-movie comedies. Between the fireworks & the editor (Donald Meeks, always the best) calling the police behind the desk...Also, some familiar & excellent character actors made this a delightful film!
Victor Mature’s first film credit on his way to becoming one of Hollywood’s Leading Men. I’ll have to check out his other movies with Hal Roach Studios made after this one to see if they are as enjoyable as this movie! Great ensemble cast and terrific screenwriting.
There is a murder of a gangster.his girlfriend ( Joan Bennett) goes to stay with her mother.the mother is the housekeeper of an upper-class family with an attractive son (John Hubbard) the gangster’s gang follows the girlfriend and the police 👮 pursue the gang-the summary sounds like a nursery rhyme-but that’s the story! Ms Bennett looks pretty in this movie-adolphe menjou and William gargan take up the slack as newspaper reporters in this comedy/crime flick! 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
I see a little aluminum coffee pot like I used to have. Today we have today we have a Kourig coffee maker. Things have certainly changed a lot since this movie was made. They had never heard of cell phones. 😅😅😅😅
19:26 The absolute stolid impassivity with which the 2 newspaperguys receive Our Hero's prattling says so much more than any dialog could have done. Comic Genius!! Some of the older vintage guys (like Hal Roach) who started in silent films remembered that not EVERYTHING had to be conveyed in words. Another example: I THINK the sculpture you can see in the background at 39:26 is Cain clobbering Abel --- an editorial comment on the relationship between the 'brothers' of the press. Just sayin'
A pleasant but thin picture, more interesting for the grand array of famous acting talent on hand, but unfortunately, even with Hal Roach at the helm they can't make a better picture like it should have been out of a so-so script.
This is one of the most bizarre films I have ever seen and I don't mean that in a good way. The sequence with the rocket fireworks is fun until the two men start firing rockets powerful enough to kill each other. I could go on and on with the endless problems in this film. A whole paragraph on miscast actors wow, some terrible errors there.
@@fredneecher1746 There is nothing philistine about my comment. I do enjoy movies from the 1940s - 1960s. This particular one had no interesting story line or acting.

That was hysterical. The scenes with the fireworks is the best! This deserves way more views and likes. Thank you for uploading!

Joan Bennett was fantastic back then and still was until her passing . I love her best on the soap opera Dark Shadows . RIP ⚘️

@@GB-dw3fo Hal Roach, that's funny because I only knew his Little Rascals/Our Gang productions
First time seeing Mature, and hearing his name, even. But he sure is dreamy!
I definitely noticed him
This is an underrated film. I thought it was hilarious, great comedic dialogue and timing!
Always love the way Joan Bennett throws her weight around. One of the very best she was.
Thank you so much for uploading this movie, it was brilliant a thoroughly enjoyable watch, great performances all round!
This was a delightful movie with excellent acting. I rate this movie a golden 10.
Donald Meeks was always hilarious. Great cast and very enjoyable movie ... Thanks for sharing!
Our pleasure!
Donald wasn't a plural, he was just Meek.
@@fueledbylove ok . thanks for catching my mistake

The best show I have seen in forever!!
Hal Roach also made Turnabout a year later with a lot of the same performers, including Gargan, Menju, Donald Meeks, and Hubbard. Check it out.
Thank You Very Much

Hope to see more in the future from that actor with a smaller part in this flick, Victor Mature. Hope he has a great career in the motion pictures.
Brilliant fun, thank you so much!

Victor Mature sure was a honey😊 Good fun movie. Second time I've seen "the Runt" as a bad guy.
Excellent movie.
great show.......
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Joan Bennett reminds me of Susan Hayward in this one. Something about her attitude...coulda come from Brooklyn....
With a very young Victor Mature thrown into the mix.
Movies were so much slower paced back then... It's kind of nice
Excellent movie - very hip - because of the players and sharp direction. Moves right along. Is that Victor Mature as Lefty?
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Great classic movie…

Victor Mature in one of his early roles. He was sexy.

It's funny to see the old fashioned telephone in this movie. Now days everyone has a cellphone. 😅😅😅
What did you expect in 1939? Anyway, your stupid cellphone is going to look old-fashioned to your grandkids.
