Subaru Forester steering and suspension repair after an ABS light complaint

- This 2014 Subaru Forester came to me with a customer complaint of an intermittent ABS light. After a short test drive, I quickly realized the light was the least of their worries. Let's have a look at the steering and suspension and get it fixed and see if that does not fix the ABS issues. I'll show you step by step how to replace a lower control arm, tie rod ends and a wheel bearing.

Even at 140,000 miles on that beater, the first hub bearing, and the control arm looked OEM. Good to see Mr. Spotty is still on staff.

I was born and raised in Newfoundland Canada… you think things rust fast in Illinois… Just add salt air and 200 days of precipitation (be it rain or snow) and the term “watch it rust” is not an alliteration… 😂😂

Was just in my first accident at 41 years old. My vehicle is likely totaled. It's a real bummer, but it would be cool if it somehow ended up in your hands as a rebuild.

I bought a 2020 Outback a week ago and was wearing my Vehcor hoodie when I did. On the drive home I thought "Haven't seen a Subaru on Scott's channel before." Well...
I actually like Subis, they are just expensive to rebuild.
It was nice to see the other side (the one that pays your bills), and maybe this will slow down some of the haters when they see you working on things other than bodies and frames (yeah, I know, one can dream). Very informative video!

I have had bearing packs like that almost fall apart on my Suburban. I really like the bearing pack hub instead of pressed in bearings. Great work as always Scott!

It seems to be true that on virtually any car, the driver doesn't know anything's wrong with the suspension until a wheel falls off.
I bet you go through a lot of rust penetrating oil up there , I was tech for Nissan in Georgia. God’s country…
Mr. Spotty was disappointed no body work. Hopefully it comes back before the Rust Monster eats the rest of it.
Where does the owner take that car for service? It's difficult to believe those all failed at once. It must have been fun to drive.

Subaru's are junk and need regular, very expensive maintenance! I worked at a dealer for years!

This is like the guy that brings in his truck and say brakes just started making some noise and you pull it apart and the piston has run all the way through rotar to the fins

I have been looking for a cheap Subaru for my son all ones I find have blown head gaskets bad motors rotted anything decent seller thinks I’m going to fund their vacation lol
They are also pricey to rebuild which is why you don't normally see them here.

2:10 that's a HO LEEE FUUUUU k moment......I watch another youtuber and oddly enough, they had a similar issue with a subaru...the bushing on the control arm wasn't just loose, it was gone....there was about 1/2 to 3/4 in of play.....

Shops only want gravy work anymore. My buddies 1995 GMC 3500 has upper bushings saturated with diesel and oil for a couple hundred thousand miles, can move with prybar easy enough, upper ball joint that when you push in the top of wheel the control are pops up and down on it. So former shop I worked at told him, Naw, it's all fine, despite the cupping on the inside of front tires with only 10k on them. So Good on you Scott for being one of the few, the extremely few., who still care about actually fixing vehicles and not just making quick easy money. I always counted the easy jobs as the balance for the tough jobs I never turned away.
I really enjoy all your videos--probably the body work ones more so. I enjoy all the special tools--bumper installation and belt moulding installation. Oh yeah I almost forgot all the special torque tools also!! One I watched even had two pizza girls and neither one brought you a pizza--what gives?? Enjoyable to watch a skilled craftsman at work!! Thanks for sharing!

How did it not just wobble down the road? Tires would wear all over the place!
It actually drove straight, just the steering wheel was off. After the new parts were on, the wheel was almost back to center. The alignment got it perfect.
Just by looking at how poorlt that car was maintained I doubt it will ever get worked on again once you're done, I bet the owner begged to "only fix what is absolutely needed" which of course was EVERYTHING.
"caffinated scott" I watched a video (time lapse) of some guys building a shed....I said "if only they moved that fast in real life" hahahhaah Reminded me of the old clamation tv show: david and goliath and the "do bees"......

Remember, these cars are in the lane next to you on the highway going 80mph with 3/4 of the suspension falling apart.
I owned a 2018, I replaced both rear bearings, front A arms , one abs sensor, ball joints. Yes I sold it.
A solid car with 140K miles.... not bad for the north.

Scott c'mon man, the Haynes manual definitely references using the correct Cotter pliers and correct weight Cotter hammer for that .7 gram pin. Sheesh.

Scott - nice job, once again. Nice change of pace to watch you exercise your extensive mechanical skills. Yeah, the owner needs to / should take full advantage of your body working skills. At the start of the video I thought for sure the Subie was in for you to work your body skills magic. Certainly needs it; classic Chicago car.
I'm impressed, Subarus around here usually get those codes after the entire arm assembly has rusted off... never make it to actually wearing out the bearing... weird.

First off I thought you wore safety toe crocs, second lol with the way things rust in the rust belt .... the car may be at a co-part the next time you see it lol but hey one can have hope :} Thanks for the vid and laughs lol
I was shocked to see a Subie on today 👍 In southern ontario I had to completely remove the rear knuckle and a local machine shop pressed it out. 16 tonne pressure. No wonder my pounding wasnt doing anything. Backing plates totally rotten and likely just as much noise as the wheel bearing. I went with oem bearings as I had a moog and a skf fail within 80k. Big birtha really useful. Have to keep an eye out on auctions. And you even used a torque wrench on the axle nut! Will make that bearing last. Nice work
You know it's going to be a rough day when you start with the easiest job and that is a wheel bearing on a drive axle. That one came apart way easier than I would have thought. Usually, there is a massive amount of heat required, followed by an extended time persuading it with an air hammer. Don't forget to throw in some fine expletives, to appease the rust gods. Maybe that was a southern car for part of it's lifetime. Funny though that there wasn't a single gnome in sight.

I have not ever broken those Subaru ball joint bolts off and had to use a through-bolt and nut. This year.
I have a Forester for around 5/6 years and got about a hundred thousand miles on mine. And it's going really well though those bushings are starting to look tired. Great job love to see you doing the work right the first time. Take care at all the best from Canada
Your use of adjustable sway bar link tool makes me feel better. They do have a place in a "real" mechanic shop.
Guess I'm old fashioned. If I do one side, I'm going to do both. But, I get it's not the shops car.
