i have the earlier version of this camera, the olympus pen lite e-pl7, and one thing i will say is that it's a great camera to travel with. my husband and i took it with us on our honeymoon and it was a lot of fun and really easy to use. in terms of vlogging, the olympus pen cameras take a little time to get used to, but once you find a comfortable way to hold the camera it's easy to forget about the flip-down screen. i'd said the lens is probably the thing that made me want to buy this camera over the G7x. i do wish that olympus would make the screen flip up, so if that aspect of the camera really bothers you, i'd give the olympus pen cameras a miss.

I'm not into vlogging or even taking photos, actually I don't even like photos, however I find myself watching this and finding it quite interesting! Very informative for someone that has no idea about cameras... And I like that your channel doesn't just focus on beauty stuff. I feel like I learned sth new today, thanks!

Hello Lily, the content of this video isn't really my thing but I wanted to click on and give you the view anyway as I love your work! Can I just say how much I love your background. Totally unrelated but the shutters, lighting and plants look so lovely. I'm excited for your vlog-less. Yours, Tasha Green's and Sunbeams Jess' are my absolute must watches! ❤️

Love seeing a review from someone that knows what they're talking about but isn't using complicated photography jargon. You know what an amateur photographer/blogger would want to know and answered all of those questions! Footage and photos looked great, but shame about the flip down screen!

I like hearing about things like this from people who use them everyday rather than experts who completely understand everything the camera does off the bat! It's good to know how it could be used in a vlogging/blogging sense too! Thanks for this review, I liked it a lot!

Hi Lily, great review! This was super helpful. I had been looking at buying the EPL7 but couldn't find a lot of reviews that offered insight into blogging/vlogging. Even though the 7 is older, it still helps to see the review of the 8 and understand the various functionality of the camera and I am loving the quality!! I might have to spring for the 8 now :)

I've been waiting for you to review this camera after I saw your snaps on the press trip! I was torn between this and the G7x mark ii a month ago, but opted for the Canon as I vlog more than I take photos. So glad I made the right decision, but now I also want this one! Love your tech reviews! x

You should check out the 25mm f1.8 if you want the equivalent of 50 mm on your 5D. The 45 mm does give beautiful bokeh for portrait photos, but it would be like a 90mm equivalent (much more zoomed in). Michromatic does a good review on both lenses here in TH-cam. He also answers to comments if you might need to ask him something 😊

Hi Lilly, thank you so much for the review - I've been looking to buy one of these & it was super helpful! Quick question for you - would you recommend buying the camera body & the kit lens, and then purchasing the 45mm lens separate, or should I just buy the camera body & the 45mm lens. I definitely want to get the 45mm lens, but wasn't sure if there is an advantage to also having the kit lens. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

This was really useful. I've been looking at getting this camera. Originally I was looking at the EPL7, then noticed they had just released this new version. Did they tell you exactly what they have altered when you went on the trip with them? Would be interesting to know as the EPL7 is £100 cheaper!
I have a Nikon DSLR and like you said, they are just too big to take everywhere, but I really want something a bit better than my iPhone.

Hi Lily, great video I'm taking a big leap and taking a break from working life and going traveling round the world Im starting to think about tech and what camera would be best for photos and for making videos as it's something I want to do to have it to look back on! It would be interesting to see if you do take this camera on your honey moon to compare it against your Canon! Iv been reading a lot of specs etc but to actually see the difference in that environment would be great!

Hi Lily! I have a question, the video you shot on the camera is super yellow. Did you find a way to fix it? I have the G7X but I'm looking for an actual photography camera with the option to do some vlogging on. I looked at getting a DSLR but found too many cons (weight, bulkiness, cost). Therefore I'm wondering if this is the perfect inbetween with the quality of a DSLR and the vlogging option of the G7X. Thoughts?

I have the previous model, the E-PL7, I got it right before the 8 got announced and the price was significantly lower (I purchased on Amazon for only $399). It's become my main vlogging camera. I can't compare to the Canon, but I really enjoy it and it was much cheaper than the G7X plus I can invest in additional lenses. I'm still learning all the features and functions but the Pen is a great camera overall. Loved hearing your thoughts on the 8.

i use the epl-7 to vlog, and i find the most frustrating part is that, because the screen flips down, you can't use a tripod with it! this has caused me so many problems, but considering vloggers always say that the canon g7x doesn't have reliable autofocus after a few months, it is definitely the better option! xx

I love this! I have been a fan of Olympus for years, as I have sold them along with Canon.
I feel the TH-cam space is saturated with Canon and I am happy to see the other brands come out of the woodwork!
I have the Olympus OM-D EM10 Mark II, and I love it! I used to carry the Nikon D7000, but it was way to bulky for me! This is great if you are photo person, as Lily mentioned maybe not for vloggers? The Canon E0S M was a major fail in the Canon line in my opinion! It was hard to use, had huge lenses, and way too expensive for what it was! Olympus makes great stuff!
Thanks for sharing Lily! I think you will love the lower aperture lenses also!

Hi, I've purchased the E-PL8 and I think this camera would be perfect for that. Really beautiful photos, you can purchase lenses such as the 45mm for street photography and you get DSLR style photos. It's really easy to carry as it's light and small compared to DSLR and is cheaper than most DSLRs! Hope that helps.

Hey Lily! I'm so glad I've found your review...I'm thinking of buying a vlogging camera, and I love the design of this, I really wanted the E-PL7 and now that this one came out I really considered this one...but I had concerns about the screen flipping downwards...like, if I wanna put a monopod on it, how will that work? lol :D So I was rather thinking abt the Sony A5100, as so many vloggers use that and it's cheaper anyways...and it flips upwards and its lighter yay! So again thanks for your honest review, as whenever I read abt this camera; all bloggers say its amazing (as they get it gifted) and they don't really mention any real cons...also when I googled anything about how to vlog with this...they don't mention any of the things you did, only that it's ahh-mazing for blogging as its being marketed as a blogger camera.

Oh Lily!!! I'm even more undecisive than before haha. I have a Nikon D5100, also flip screen, which I love! But I think it's time to move on, to get the best out of my pictures. I know you use Canon, but do you (or some other viewers =) ) have any suggestions? I'm torn between the Nikon D7200 and the Olympus Pen E-PL8. I do a lot of close ups, maybe it might help to decide which one's the best for me. Thanks for your honest opinion!!! =)

Wi-Fi is nice and the quality is good enough for Instagram.

Great review Lily! I've recently bought the E-PL8 and I love it. I wouldn't recommend buying this for filming with as, in my opinion, the quality isn't as good as the Canon G7X. I find the video comes out a bit warped if you move the camera about too quickly....! That being said, this camera would be perfect for anyone looking to get into photography who can't quite afford the DSLR price tag. This camera is very reasonably priced, the kit lens is great and gives you those beautiful bokeh images (blurry background) and I feel it definitely produces images on par with many DSLR cameras! If anyone is interested I've also got some test footage on my channel and image shots on my blog :)

Michaela Ederová I think she does, & if I'm not mistaken the E-PL8 ships out only with the pancake 1442 as the kit lens (with the E-PL7 I think you can choose to have the pancake kit or the non pancake kit) 😊

Lovely honest review! I am just starting my own blog and TH-cam channel so am doing lots of research on the right camera to get. I'm in a bit of a quandary because I want to get a good camera so the quality is good, but don't want to spend thousands in case it all doesn't quite work out!!! What would you recommend? Thinking of getting the canon eos 750d but not sure! X

carly welsh I'm not Lily, but I'd like to give my opinion as I've been looking into cameras too 😊 If you're going to do more sit down videos where the camera would just stand on a tripod, I feel like the 750D would give an overall better video quality. But if you're gonna do more vlog where you go about your day & bring the camera along with you, something like Olympus would be better since it's more compact & has in body stabilization so your videos won't be shaky. Panasonic G7 is also good for video (it even do 4K), and relatively compact & cheap. You should check out Kate La Vie's last year (2015) Vlogmas, I think she use Olympus E-PL7 for those vlogs.. Hope it helps!👍🏻

I have the Canon 750d and use it to film all my videos on (you can see them on my channel) and I honestly cannot recommend it enough, I currently use mine without a microphone etc and the sound quality is just as good as its amazing filming quality! Highly recommend! xxx

You can link the camera to your smartphone using wifi and use the phone as an "external touchscreen display".

They made it flipping down cause when you look at the display while shooting Selfie, it looks a bit better than when its up. Shure you should look in the Lens tho...

I used to have the EPL-7 and ended up selling it as found the vlogging quality a bit poor in comparison to iPhone (wasn't very clear!) and felt I had to buy more lenses to make the photos look better (as you said the kit isn't the best) which wasn't cost effective when buying lenses for my canon, plus I've seen from people I follow who use Olympus say that the cameras can break easily and the lenses even more so, so something to think about in terms of usage!
I do wish the camera was better - screen flipped down, better quality video - but would be interesting to see how the new version compares, and it is great for higher quality Instagram! The photos you took look really good and surprised at the vlog footage, seems to have improved but would have to see for myself - great review Lily, love discussing camera tech! Xx

I've purchased the E-PL8 and I agree, I wouldn't use it for vlogging. The quality isn't as good as the G7X. The video warps as you move about! What camera do you use now for vlogging? :)

I have this camera, use it for youtube and insta, really really like it, but totally agree, why why why does the screen flip down? Pretty useless when you are using a tripod.

Slightly Salty Yoga I have just purchased it!! But I thought the screen flipped all the way up, how do you use it to film videos? What tripod do you use??

This was a such a good review, I liked how you talked more realistically on how it can be used. I do have a question though, I'm look to get a camera (I have the canon s120 for fun videos and things like that) but i want to get something with better quality and takes good pictures. I don't know if I should get an entry level Dslr like the canon 600D or 700D (I think thats the same as the US canon t5i) or the olympus pen,I would go with the older model E-PL7 because its cheaper and I can get a 2 lens deal on amazon I also read that there is not a lot of difference between the 7 and 8. I also travel a lot between the US and London and I wouldn't put a camera in my checked bag so size is also a challenge I don't know what I should go with or what is better in the long run.

deelot1 I like the s120 it's what all my videos are filmed with but there's no challenge. I want to get a camera where I can learn how to use it and take really different pictures and videos

Yes it's the same for me too - S120 has been great for my videos and photos but I want to be to be more experimental now!

@@Brooke.c i have the S100 and im about to pull the trigger on a never used L7 at a great price for mainly photos and using my vintage pentax 50 because of the excellent ibs everyone raves about, what do you think as compared to a used but much more expensive a6000 or G7X ? i can get the L7 barely used like new with the pancake ez for $200...

Great review Lily. I have the EPL7, doesn't seem that there is a huge amount of difference, so i won't be upgrading just yet. I sold my Canon 6D as i hated taking it out with me as i felt like a tourist, so I got the EPL7 instead which I feel so much more comfortable with and its so much lighter. I've filmed videos on mine with it on a tripod as when you pair it on your phone you get remote view - so you can see yourself in your phone and use your phone as a remote. It drains your phone battery really fast though. I found the filming quality really good - but the sound quality isn't brilliant. I noticed on your footage you have the same whirring noise. Love it for photos though and it takes awesome flat lays!

Flip down allowed ur eye seemingly looking at the center lens compare to flip up design. So your eyes still looks nice even if u watch the screen

@@guadisch3136 it's just because it's a smaller sensor ... so when comparing to full frame it's x2 ... a 25mm olympus lens would be actually 50 mm ... (sorry, i'm not english and i don't really know how to explain this further)
