Photo Walk Olympus Pen E-PL8 vs Fujifilm X100f ep.215

  • I picked up a Fujifilm X100f the other day and wanted to compare the film simulations against my Olympus Pen E-PL8 with the 17mm f/1.8. I setup the cameras as I would for any photo walk: Aperture Priority, AutoISO to 12800, some highlight and shadow adjustments, then exposure comp as needed. I will continue testing and summarize my thoughts in a future video.

    UK - amzn.to/3426gg2

    E-PL8 seems to nail the shots 99% of the time just like my old E-PL5. Amazing the capabilities of these little cameras. Who needs big Dslr cameras really.

      Yes, the exposures were much closer to what I wanted in the Olympus. That said, I need to practice more with the Fuji to get a feel for how it exposes for different light and colors.

      Thanks. I still have a long way to go to get the kind of images I want. I'm so used to Olympus and know exactly what to do but with Fuji there is bit of a learning curve. Not just with the settings, but how the camera exposes different lighting and colors.

      Thanks. Gonna try. Probably will be harder than it seems. The acros no problem, velvia add saturation, chrome subtract saturation. Obviously it will be not that simple, but I did those two things and got very close!

    Overall I much prefer the E-PL8 over the Fuji. Both color and dynamic range. Also the Fuji needed a stop or two more ISO to get the same exposure. Tilt screens are a must for me as well. I owned an XT100S for a while. It was slow to actually take a photo and I just couldn't get used to it. It just wasn't what I thought it was going to be. My EM10mk3 is much better ergonomically, is about the same weight with the 17mm, and I believe is slight smaller. I usually have the Pro 12-40mm on it for everyday stuff. The Pro lens is one of the best I have ever owned. Thanks for the walk and including us in your process of getting used to a new camera system.

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the fuji has no size/weight advantage really. If I put on a pancake zoom or prime on my Pen or EM10, it's pretty much the same. Working without a tilt screen is hard.

    Great video and great photos! Both look fantastic. The Olympus IBIS is clearly better for video or vlogging. I wonder how the Fuji AF would do on moving subjects like small kids running around vs. Olympus. That’s where my PEN-F struggles.

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. Yeah, the PenF C-AF feels weak, even compared to it's Olympus siblings. Not sure I can test the C-AF on moving subjects and give a legit opinion. I rarely shoot like that and there would be a lot of user error during testing.

    I ve just bought a Fuji XT2. Couldn’t resist as the price is way down now. I’m finding it great to use, but so different to my Olympus. I took a walk around town just using the Classic Chrome sim. It’s very shadowy, sometimes hard to get right, but easy to change the exposure comp. when I did get it right the colours were wow. It’s quite a challenge . The deep shadows look great very contrasty for street photography. Every day I try a different sim. Then the next day alter the highlights and shadow tones. It’s fun.

    • @RobTrek

      Thanks for sharing. It will take some time to get used to how the camera exposes for different light and colors vs our Olympus. It's taken me almost 3 years to get what I want out of our Olympus cameras. I don't expect it will take me that long with any camera system now, but it's fun either way.

    Another very enjoyable photowalk. That expression going Dutch. What does it mean and do you know where it comes from ?
    I had the x100t but I sold it. The ergonomics were not working for me and also the fact that you cannot tilt the screen. The exposure compensation dial did not feel smooth enough either.
    I was disappointed because I like the looks but it just did not feel good in my hands.

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've heard other photographers use the word when tilting the camera. I looked it up on wiki en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_angle
      Interesting read. The ergos aren't great for me either, but this is just a toy camera for me. Working without a tilt screen is tough though. It also lacks some other features I'm used to with Olympus. I'm not a big fan of the looks but it's growing on me.

    Glad to see the comparisons between the PL8 and X100f. I had a Fuji XT-2 loaner last year and I find that the colours are too saturated for my taste, and the B&W are too contrasty. Seems like you are getting similar results. Colours are really a personal taste, so there is no such thing as "Fuji colours are better". I just don't buy into "colour science". We need to find the right balance and set the camera according to personal preference.

    • @RobTrek

    Hey Rob, thanks for doing this comparison. I used to have an XT-20 and I think Fuji tends to crush the black a bit too hard. I guess that's what gives them the "Fuji" look that people adore so much?
    Anyway, it seems like the PL8 is not behind the Fuji in terms of colour reproduction at all. Vivid seems to be very similar to Velvia, except for the crushing black. I guess with just a bit of adjustment for the vivid mode, we can have something similar to Velvia in our Olympus bodies?

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the fuji has a certain magic to it that I'm finding hard to duplicate. That said, the differences are very subtle and there's about 1000 other things that make a good photo than just the colors. Velvia is slightly more saturated and has a stronger contrast curve. I'm working on some settings to try to get close to the various film sims on Fuji.

    Very good video as usual.
    I picked up E-PL8 1.5 years back. But with lockdowns & pandemic, I have hardly used it. The 45 mm lens I have is great. But I could not use it much in home with less space to move around. I thought to get 17mm / 25 mm lens. I am getting a used 25mm lens for 170 bucks (13k Indian rupees). If I can have only one lens, would you recommend 25mm lens?

    Aside from the underexposing issue on the fuji, its kinda hard to tell the jpeg IQ on TH-cam. What is your overall impression for jpegs so far?

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Looking at them directly on the monitor there is still little difference in full frame. The color differences are subtle. High ISO noise is all over the place. Some shots the Pen looks better, some the Fuji. But I had the Fuji noise reduction on at 0, which is not really 0 since you can dial in -4 noise reduction. I had the Pen noise reduction "Off". The fuji lens is soft up to f4 and everything is at f2 or f2.8 here. The Olympus 17mm is sharper at f/2 than the Fuji but they balance out at f/4. There are definitely some tone curve and hue variance between the two cameras, as well as how it meters the exposure in different light and colors. I think this has to do with the xtrans sensor is less sensitive to anything but red. Hence the slight magenta tint I'm getting across the board. A full legit test would white balance correct, DOF match, and constant luminance. This was just a photo walk to see what happens if I just take it out. Hope that helps.

    Great video and comparison. On a couple of shots I prefer Fuji, some there’s little difference but overall I prefer the Olympus shots. The Fuji ones seem too contrasty (the blacks are blacker) and colours a touch over saturated. If shooting jpg you can’t tone down high contrast scenes, but you can add contrast to more balanced images. A win for Olympus.

    I use both systems like the Fuji x and micro 4/3. Like them both. My fuji xt2 take slightly cleaner photos but it is a small difference there. Dept of field is is different and for portait the fuji is better or when wanting less dept of field ofcourse. You get more pop in the the photo with the fuji x sensor. Looking a little more 3 dimensional.
    For landscape the micro 4/3 can win because of more dept of field. But my opinion is that 3:2 is better format than micro 4/3 for landscape. I crop then the micro 4/3 in the computer.
    And the Ibis is a big plus. Micro 4/3 Ibis versus the fuji x sensor cleaner on higher iso. Micro 4/3 small and light lenses and many light bodies. (Fuji also have a few light ones like the Fuji xe3)
    Also costing less then fuji x. I use primes only so i cant say about the zooms.
    I have had fullformat before but today i shoot only mirrorless. The weight and the price.....no thank you!
    Image quality between fuji x and micro 4/3 is very small.
    One problem with fuji x is that they give darker shadows sometimes. Not always but sometimes compared to my micro 4/3 cameras. I have been shooting with early Olympus ep cameras, em10 mark2 and some em5, panasonic G80 and Gx9.
    The shadows i need to work more with in the computer with fuji x but not always.

      It was a fun little test. Still have a long way to go. But the Fuji film sims are very subtle. Not sure it's worth the trade off. Kinda pricey, no ibis, and no tilt screen. There are some other workflow issues that are limiting too, like it has a level but no pitch correction meter, you can't shoot bracketed film sims with raw or art filters. Looks like Olympus Pen is the winner-IBIS, better exposure, and tilting screen. Anyway the Fuji beats the Olympus.

    Wow, the Fuji X100F has such jiggly video... why do they bother putting it in there??? 🙄
    The monochromes from the PL8 were great... were they RAW files that you processed or JPGs? They compared well to the “famous” Fuji Acros film simulation!

      Thanks. They were straight out of camera jpgs. I think the x100f video is just to check the box for marketing. Most users of that camera aren't interested in video.

    I suspect if you printed these you wouldn’t be able to tell much difference, at least on small prints

      The differences so far are very subtle. I will print some when I get a better feel for the camera's input/output. As is, the pictures I took here would be difficult to see a difference in print.

    Great video Rob, I agree Fuji underexposes, it all over the internet, not sure what lens did you use with the Pen, but the x100f is their niche camera, fixed screen, no ibis, lens is soft at f2 and close distances, so if you have to stop down to 2.8 or 4, you kinda loose the benefit of more light gathering of the larger APS-C sensor. however, if Pen/Pen-F or any OMD coupled with Oly best lenses is compared to a XT2/XT3/XT30 with their F2/1.4 lenses, ... fuji should perform a lot better specially in low light...
    IMO, Oly is fun to use, cheaper, handling is better + the ibis, suffer over iso3200, Art Filters are good but they too many, some of them toyish and should be disabled right away. Fuji is expensive and no ibis but better in low light and film simulations are better looking.

      Thanks. You pretty much summed it up! As for the art filters, I'm still struggling to find a good subject for "Watercolor". So that one is always avoided or turned off.

    Hi Rob, great video. You may have already seen this but this is a good video on tweaking the 100f settings th-cam.com/video/CXh6WgoukeY/w-d-xo.html

      Thanks. I haven't seen that one. Will check it out. I really need to shoot a lot more to get a feel for how this fuji camera exposes for different light and colors. I can nail it with Olympus because I've done 10's of thousands of shots.
