I shoot JPG out of my PEN-F quite frequently, and enjoy the process. I especially love the settings and “filters” available for out-of-the-camera black and white shooting. It’s just a lot of fun to spend time on only photography enjoying the camera and the process and coming home to images which are cooked to order in the camera.
My other Olympus camera is an E-M1 II, which I use for most of my other photography, shooting RAW with all the usual post processing. So also by no means arguing against RAW.
Thanks, Joe, for all the great educational content. Been enjoying this channel since well before your switch to M43.

they should have had you shoot it with the 14-42 kit lens. then they could also say photos shot with the boxed kit same as the girls are shooting with.

Interesting video! Nice to see what an E-PL9 is capable of in skilled hands.
I've been really happy with my E-PL7 since I bought it a couple of years ago. Like you say, these bodies are very capable and pack a lot of functionality! The only thing that really made me want to step up to my E-M5 MkII was the limited physical controls on the body of the E-PL7, but I still use it a lot and the tilting screen on the E-PL7 fits my most common types of shooting better than the flippy screen of the E-M5. In fact, I think some of my favorite photos were captured on the E-PL7.
I'm curious about the ISO range you mentioned. My Olympus cameras have a base ISO of 200, and unfortunately the Auto ISO cannot go below 200. I'm guessing the Auto ISO in the E-PL9 has been updated to allow to go down to the Low settings as well. I've seen it mentioned somewhere (maybe a Northrup video?) that this limits the total dynamic range captured? What's your experience of this?
I appreciated the shoot planning aspects in the video, definitely something I need to think about more for my shoots!

Always enjoy your videos, as well as learning from them! I use a E-P3 as a 3rd body to my two matching OM-D EM-1 mk1's. I could tell these were all shot in jpegs with the terrible dynamic range. jk. They look great. I shoot raw and jpeg for backup. Lately I've been posting the jpegs on my instagram/fb and not wasting my time editing the raw files. As long as your not under/over exposing by 10 stops or doing crazy retouches, jpegs are fine. I think some people just over react with the sound of shooting jpegs.

Olympus OM-D E-M10 III is the better camera, or should I say the most convenient camera with the 17mm f/1.8 and 12-40mm f/2.8 lenses. The whole kit today will be under $2K. Considering that not everyone need E-M1***, it's enough for in-studio and day-light shooting.

    • @theJoeEdelman

That is a ridiculous statement Owl Polar and just your opinion. The EM10 Mark III is an awesome camera, but that doesn't make it best or right for everyone. The E-PL9 is a great camera with incredible features that is preferred by many. At no point in my video did I say it was best, or that YOU should purchase it.

There is also something really satisfying about producing a great image right out of camera.

Most of the time I shoot RAW+JPEG on my Olympus cameras and lately I am working only with the JPEGs cause them are coming great. On the past weeks I were on a 20 days vacations with my wife thru Mexico and took with me the PEN-F with some lenses. Most of the time I was shooting Aperture Priority and the Exposure Compesation wheel made my life so easy. I shoot mostly on JPEG only and so happy with the results. For post processing I am using Snapseed, its an amazing app and let you create presets. Your videos are amazing, keep it up as always!

A good quick review of an overlooked camera, and one that can really help a lot of people, if they get past all the marketing fluff stating they need more and bigger and badder devices. Nice to see you limit and confine to JPG and Auto-ISO and such too. Not even sure you needed to even use the 12-100... and the best to both of the Instagrammers.

I was considering to buy an E-PL9 as a travel camera, I like it a lot, but in the end I bought a Panasonic Lumix GX850 at half the price of the Olympus in Amazon Spain. To be fair I still think the E-PL9 is a superior camera (not by much) but for the price the Panasonic was a no brainer. Of course it's not my main camera, I own a G7 that gives me more flexibility and better ergonomics and controls. One question about your assignment, at first glance the lens/camera combinations that you use feels a little unbalance, did you noticed it or limited you in any way?

What I like most in this video and in Joe, is that he is willing to break the myths about the sensor size and straight talks about the things that matters, the photographer skills to understand the light, subject and theme, and then understand the camera features. The sensor size doesn't matter at all compared what does example MySets (Custom Set now) and camera having interchangeable lenses so one can build a different kind setups to match the need, like in this case use 12-100mm f/4 with a E-PL9!
Personally I have one drawback that Olympus made with E-PL8 and newer, they removed the AP2 (accessory port 2) from hotshoe so one can't anymore attach a external viewfinder like VF-4. I use even today every day a E-P5 with 14-42EZ with VF-2 (because it is round and smaller compared to VF-4) that hangs from my belt. Every time I need to take a photo, I can just lift the camera from the belt, turn it On and even adjust its focal length and shoot, all with one hand. Thanks to two dials, VF-2 and Electronic Zoom.
And that makes me now consider, that do I buy in three days time a PEN-F or E-M1 II. My E-M1 mechanical shutter is dying in cold weather (gets stuck, and only good thump on it will release it) and I need that weather sealing sometimes and 60 FPS would really come handy. But then again PEN-F would likely be more often useful with its color creator dial (as I like to shoot JPEG+raw as I mostly only need to use JPEG and not touch raw almost ever), but I am so teared up for which one to get first now.
I just acquired the original E-M5, and I just love that camera. It was instant buy just for the fun and as an "collector item" as that is the first OM-D that started the m4/3 system raise in the image quality to top dogs. PEN-F is as well a collectors item, but E-M1 is more of a workhorse, but I so love doing black and white and PEN-F is so calling me thats why. It would cost just 999€ with the 25mm f/1.8 lens anyways...
This is so terrible, Olympus creates so many amazing bodies and lenses that it is difficult not to go wrong with any of them!
I want to see Joe's experience with the PEN-F in B/W mode on lifestyle photographs!

On my recent family trip to Disney I left my Leica M240 and 5D IV at home and took the Panasonic G9 with the pana-leica 12-60. I shot everything on jpeg except a few landscape shots I wanted to edit later. The new jpeg engine on the G9 is so good I can finally shoot jpeg and save time in front of the pc. It even beats my all time fav jpeg engine, the Fuji.

    • @katumus
      @katumus 5 ปีที่แล้ว

And think about this, Olympus has had that top JPEG engine for a decade now... Panasonic only has got close to it with G9!
So many Canon, Nikon and Pentax users has been hardcore raw shooters only because their JPEG engines are really trash compared what Olympus has been doing.
That is one of the reasons why I chose Olympus over Fuji and Panasonic when I switched from Canon for my professional work, that Olympus allows me get straight out of the camera the results that would require lots of raw file tweaking in image editor with others. Fuji is great too, but Olympus really has been on the leading point. And when PEN-F came out, the usual "JPEG is trash, that front knob is useless for raw shooters!" and they just don't get it, you don't need raw! You shoot JPEG and you just need to do very minor adjustments that are already in limits of the JPEG itself!
It is great to see that Panasonic got there now too, as nothing is better than photographers getting a easier and more efficient tools for their needs...
After years using Canon 5D and 1D, the Olympus EVF was full restart to whole photography. It was like being a kid again in a darkroom, first time seeing your photograph to be visible on the negative and then appear on the print in the darkroom....
And that partially is glowing from the Joe Edelman, that same spiritual happiness and joy from using a gear that makes him enjoy more from the work he does... He is a true amateur! (Amateur means "for the love of something" and not at all negative mean "not professiona" as "Professional" only gets paid from doing something, while Amateur loves to do something. One can be professional and amateur same time). Let me quote the Henri Cartier Bresson:
“25 years have passed since I started to look through my view-finder. But I regard myself still as an amateur, though I am still no longer a dilettante.”

My only contention is the flip down screen being good for vlogging. Sure doing so hand held would work, but on a tripod it or selfie stick it really isn't so advantageous. Is there some patent Canon holds that prevents anyone else from producing a camera with a side flipping screen that I'm not aware of?

Olympus offers different means to do things, and it requires one needs to learn away the Canon/Nikon ways. And best thing with Olympus is, that their menus and philosophy is same with very minor new features like E-PL9 and E-M10 III brought.
