    Honestly, I bought this camera because it was cheap.... and as I already have a G9 my lenses were compatible. What I didn’t think was that I tend to grab the Oly more often than the G9. For every day fun and quality, this camera can’t be beaten. Size and looks are great, and I can’t see a difference betwen 3 and 5 axis IBIS. Both are great. I don’t miss a viewfinder at all, I tilt the screen a bit if the day is too bright. Great camera, great colors and practical design. Recommended.

    • @MaartenHeilbron

      Yes, if that's all that's stopping you, that model (and others) do have viewfinders.

    • @SurfinScientist
      @SurfinScientist 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Completely agree! Viewfinders make a camera more bulky, and that is exactly what I don't want.

    • @MaartenHeilbron

      I must say, that I do prefer a viewfinder ...

    • @SurfinScientist
      @SurfinScientist 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@MaartenHeilbron I understand that some people prefer a viewfinder, but there are already many M43 models with viewfinders, so they have a lot of choice. The people not wanting a viewfinder, on the other hand, have very limited choices. In fact, there is no M43 model with full control buttons but without viewfinder. The Pen E-PL9 comes closest to it, but it is just a bit short. Nevertheless, I am considering to buy it, because it is quite a cool camera. It is especially suitable for street photography to shoot from the hip, while using the screen tilted upwards as viewfinder.

    Hello! I’m on the fence about going with an Olympus from Canon. Or maybe using both. Not sure. Do you find all those features necessary in camera or do you find them a bit overwhelming? I love most of the features but I guess it’s either my lack of experience or lack of knowledge. I’m not an amateur and I thought I would be able to keep up! Whew! Great review!!

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That doesn't sound like a comfortable fence. They are overwhelming, but in most cases, if you shoot in one of the PASM modes and have a fair idea of what you're up to, photography-wise, you can overlook them, so you don't have to be overwhelmed. And as it pleases you, there's the opportunity to try one or more settings or features out to see if they add any value to your photography. And thanks for your kind words.

    I got the E-PL9 to work alongside my E-M1 MkII. Both have the electronic shutter which avoids the mechanical shutter noise - in the E-PL9 it is ONLY found in the AP setting as Silent mode! This is mode designed for quiet shooting like at a wedding and you cant set the shutter speed or f/stop because it is a Program mode! You can't use electronic shutter in any of the PASM modes! This is a big disappointment - why would Olympus cripple the camera this way?

    Hello Maarten, as always - an enjoyment. Why to buy this camera? Only for the blue edition, I confess. It looks so fine. Is this a serious scale? Yes. Because I own Olympus Stylus 1s, Pen F, OMD 5 Mk II and 1 Mark III. That´s very good cameras for serious (handmade) photography. But this one is an eyecatcher - for me. Beatutiful. Simple. Easy - just not simple. In blue one for the heart - as it`s greater sister Pen F. Love on first sight...it only would be nice to use an external EVF as possiibilty or still better a Popup. To h a v e one as possibility is more convincing as the formfactor argument or that Olympus do have other cameras with - in my opinion. This solution would not be a question of design but of photographic practicality.

      If synchronizing audio while editing sounds complicated, it's not. After you've done it once or twice, you'll see it's easy.

    Olympus have many cameras with an integrated EVF. This one is the *only* model that hasn't got one, so to complain about it, is somewhat lame and hypocritical. However, I agree that there _could be_ a sort of pop-up EVF in some future model, like there are now in Sony RX100 cameras. But then, people would complain about something else.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      While the entire Olympus lineup may include many cameras that do have an EVF, this one does not. In a review of this model, it seems appropriate to mention this.

    • @zvonimirtosic6171
      @zvonimirtosic6171 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. To mention it, yes, that is fine, but the wider context was missing - all other cameras have an EVF. Why is Olympus making one without it? There must be a reason. Decent EVF also complicates camera design, makes a camera bigger, in some way or the other. When taking photos at arm's length, or at awkward angles, or above the head, this PL is lighter, easier and more comfortable to hold in hands that any OM model with an EVF hump, or even the Pen F, which is squarish, but is heavier and has a bigger body.
      All that being said, I think it is possible to have a pop-up EVF in a future model, and maybe users can suggest Olympus such a solution?

      Like the range finder style. The model above this one has it. The PEN - F (expensive.)
      Of the whole PEN series I think they should have included an EVF in there top 3 models.
      Not only in their larger DSLR style bodies. Think Fujifilm X-E2. Or Lumix GX7.
