Hey o, I LOVED IT, im trying to make this aswell but i need your suggestion, which 3d printer would be good enough to print out the Halo 3 master chief helmet
literally any printer. I use a CR-10 because it has a large build surface. However, for this helmet, I didn't take advantage of that because I printed the helmet in smaller pieces. You could easily make it on an ender 3, which is smaller but easier on the wallet. Of course there are more printer brands other than creality, such as prusa, and ive heard people have had plenty of success with those printers as well. Though if you have never used a printer before, I would recommend doing lots of practice prints before jumping straight into a full helmet.
@@N8TEBB thank you but i have not enough money for a 3d printer or have to section printing but are you selling some some halo 3 master cheif helmets on esty or anything, i would buy
@@StarLineCapProductions Unfortunately I am not selling anything, but if you are interested in making halo helmets lots of people are selling casts of helmets that you can paint yourself! Going price is $100-150, but if you ask me it's worth spending 10 more bucks and buying an ender 3 for $160.
@@N8TEBB hey, i bought my self a 3d printer (the one you suggested) and is coming this Christmas, but my proplem now it A: what website or app you use to cut the helmet in little price. B: how do i open the templates and what website you use to scale it
very relatable of how I also started playing halo, trying it on my pc, bringing out my old Xbox 360, and just playing halo 1,2,3, reach,4.odst. I wish I could make my own armor someday when I'm older and have the equipment. Do you have any other tips to help make my own armor at some point?
just start. you don't NEED a 3d printer, you can make stuff out of foam. You won't be amazing right away, but with a bit of practice you'll get there! Just need foam, a knife, and glue. I hope one day you do it :)
Files are from 405th.com I estimated the width by measuring how wide I would want the widest point to be on me, then used that to scale the file in pepakura designer.
decisions decisions eh? I was originally going to make halo 2 but couldn't find templates on the 405th. I wish you good fortune on you suit, which ever one you decide to make!
could you go into more detail about how you fold the foam, i understand you cut the other side but how? could you explain as i am planning to make my own. THANK U
There's not much to it. You just use a box knife to cut out a V shaped channel on the other side of the foam so you can fold it. There's a bit of guess work to try and make the cut the right depth but you will get a feel for it after you make a few pieces. If you need more info, there's lots of tips on the 405th foam guide: www.405th.com/forums/threads/foam-guide.50964/
As someone who's completely new to this how would I go about resizing the pieces so that they fit my dimensions? Lovely video by the way helps visualise the task at hand perfectly!
Sizing is certainly one of the hardest things to get right! I try to imagine how much space the piece should take up on my arm if it was a rectangular prism. I'll measure how big its dimensions are and then scale the template in pepekura to match. I'll print it and cut out the template and hold it up to where its supposed to go to try to see if it's too big or too small. I'll adjusts if necessary but if not I'll start working on the foam. The nice part about foam is it's easy to change around if you're not happy with the proportions. You can stretch pieces/ cut pieces out etc if necessary. Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any q's!
There are many different types of bondo, But the main difference is how hard it is, and how long it takes to harden. Spot putty is fairly soft and dries quicker. You mix bondo yourself so you can control how fast it dries, and I find depending on what type of bondo you get, it is harder. I tend to use bondo for big gaps and spot putty for smaller things like print lines. Hope that helps! :)
Sure! It's right here! www.405th.com/forums/threads/mjolnir-mk-vi-master-chief-armour-halo-3.51757/post-798826 This is the build thread I made on the 405th for this project. There's lots of other info there too!
Dude, that is so freaking awesome, where did you get the stuff for making the visor? I'm planning on making Suit of Snake Eyes' Armor from Gi Joe Retaliation
PETG plastic can be bought from ebay. I got 0.03" thickness. The dye (iDye Poly) can be found at Jo Anne's craft store (Unfortunately only in the US stores) or on ebay but for more money and shipping. The spray chrome I found on amazon. The vacuum form box is easy enough to make yourself out of plywood an peg board. Just have to cut a whole in the bottom for a shop vac (or a regular vacuum works too).
So I'm very interested in the support you used for the final visor; I assume it was just the visor's supports from the printing? What infill did you use for this to ensure it didn't collapse? I have seen others use a solid 'buck' but I don't think one exists for this specific helmet model. I definitely appreciate any guidance, your build is excellent!
Thank you for leaving such a nice comment! To print the visor with support I just adjusted the setting in cura to print support if there was even the slightest overhang. I think I did 15% infill on the support.
@@N8TEBB I also see in the video that you printed the visor by itself as well as the buck, did you just lay the separate visor on top of the 'sacrificial' visor that's attached to the buck? I printed mine in much the same way, but the visor that was used to make the buck is attached too well to the supports and isn't removable. I'm a little concerned that the separate visor laid on top of another will be bigger than I want for the final vacuum formed one, but I can't quite tell if that's what you did on yours. Some shots it looks like the visor that was used for the buck was able to be removed, giving you a nice recess for the finished, sanded visor piece.
@@KillingIsBadong What I did was print a visor laying on its back so I could get all of the support material. I printed it quick and with a large layer height. Then I tossed that visor, but kept the support. I then printed a new visor on its side to the layer lines were perpendicular to the face of the visor. This was printed slower and with a smaller layer height, and was the visor that I used as the buck. I simply placed the new visor on top of the old support material.
Helmets can be really tricky, but they're not impossible to make out of foam! Make sure whatever glue you're using is really strong and holds quickly. When you join two pieces, try to get them to line up as much as possible. It'll save work later on. For helmets especially, it may be useful to use a heat gun to bend some pieces before you glue them. I've never made a helmet out of foam before, but there's plenty of good advice on forums and youtube. As long as you have a bit of guidance from the internet you should be to go!
careful though, in the long run you'll end up spending more on filament and materials than the printer itself. Still a great buy, but just lettin u know its an ongoing cost
the plastic I use is PLA and costs $30CAD/kg, i managed to get the whole helmet done in less than a kg. The suit was still fairly expensive though because of things like paint and plasti-dip.
Hey, quick question how do you messure the armor and i dont have a computer to print and i am trying to do it on my phone do you have any tips, pls type it down as fast as possible
Well, in order to access the templates you will need pepekura viewer, which i believe only runs on windows. To measure, I just estimated the size of the piece in 3d space around the area it would take up. I used a measuring tape to help, but mostly I printed the pieces and cut out the templates to see how bi the foam would end up being.
I used Orange for the visor. Not seep orange, not pumpkin orange, just orange. www.joann.com/jacquard-idye-natural-fabric-dye/1687136.html Also make sure it's idye poly not just idye. The colour varies depending on the thickness of the plastic and the temperature of the water, so just leave the visor in until it has the colour you're looking for. Thank you for the support!
yo so i'm making a kamen rider knight heImet and he has bIue eyes underneath his visor, i was wondering if iron man Ied eyes wouId bIeed thru a chromed bIack visor? aIso what stooI and frame did you buy for vacuum forming/what are the measurements? my dad's got some cIamps i can use but i'm assuming unIess they're made of metaI they're gonna meIt? where do you dump the dye water after? can i just use a trans bIack petg sheet instead?
1. Lights will def shine through a chrome backed visor. 2. I made my vacuum forming buck. It fits a 12"x12" petg sheet. All other dimensions are arbitrary. 3. Definitely use metal clamps or binder clips to hold the frame together. 4. I dump the used dye on the lawn (I don't know if this is the proper way to dispose of it, but dyeing is not a common occasion for me so I'm sure it won't hurt). 5. You could use translucent petg, but the tint would have to be quite heavy, and the light might not shine through as well.
@N8TEBB what if i were to black tape off the led from the rest of the visor? what if i don't have printed supports for the visor? does it have to be a shop vac? my dad's got a makeshift tabIe but it's 15 by 20 inches
@@markvo3137 Regular household vacuums will work, although they are not as powerful as shop vacs typically. If you don't have printed supports, I would recommend making them out of clay or some other malleable material. If there are no supports, the mold can snap during the forming process. I'm not sure what you mean when you say tape off the LEDs. Do you mean using a translucent tinted tape to darken the visor in all areas except where the LEDs are? If so, I've never tried that and I can't speak to how well it would work.

If you need more info, there's lots of tips on the 405th foam guide: www.405th.com/forums/threads/foam-guide.50964/
@@N8TEBB thank u so much
As someone who's completely new to this how would I go about resizing the pieces so that they fit my dimensions?
Let me know if you have any q's!
how do i get the image into pepakura
what is the difference between spot putty and bondo? i have the helmet already printed
@@N8TEBB ok thanks! this was a great video btw
@@JZM006 Thanks you!
I’m might asking to much but can I get a list of what you use to make this I want to do this because it looks cool
Sure! It's right here! www.405th.com/forums/threads/mjolnir-mk-vi-master-chief-armour-halo-3.51757/post-798826 This is the build thread I made on the 405th for this project. There's lots of other info there too!
@@N8TEBB thank you bro!
what did you do do to get the visor to fit? the one i printed was much to small and there ended up being gaps around the edges
if there's gaps id just try scaling it up a bit
@@N8TEBB Ok, Awesome! Thanks
What thickness did you ended up using for the visor
0.03" thick
as i watched this i have worked on my Halo 4 Venator helment. I am using EVA foam... tricky stuff... never done this before... any advice?
Helmets can be really tricky, but they're not impossible to make out of foam! Make sure whatever glue you're using is really strong and holds quickly. When you join two pieces, try to get them to line up as much as possible. It'll save work later on. For helmets especially, it may be useful to use a heat gun to bend some pieces before you glue them. I've never made a helmet out of foam before, but there's plenty of good advice on forums and youtube. As long as you have a bit of guidance from the internet you should be to go!
How much does one of those printers cost???
the exact model i have is currently $280 USD bit.ly/2ZSjQpq
@@N8TEBB damn that's a good deal, I might start saving up
careful though, in the long run you'll end up spending more on filament and materials than the printer itself. Still a great buy, but just lettin u know its an ongoing cost
So I want to buy a 3d printer, but I want to know how much filament it uses (for this mask)
the plastic I use is PLA and costs $30CAD/kg, i managed to get the whole helmet done in less than a kg. The suit was still fairly expensive though because of things like paint and plasti-dip.
@@N8TEBB thank you
Hey, quick question how do you messure the armor and i dont have a computer to print and i am trying to do it on my phone do you have any tips, pls type it down as fast as possible
Bro this is sick! Do you remember what color dye you used? I wanna make one now
I used Orange for the visor.
Awesome project ! Can you give us your stuff (3d print model, software...)? Thx !
links to models are in description... software is pepekura: tamasoft.co.jp/pepakura-en/
and cura: ultimaker.com/software/ultimaker-cura
yo so i'm making a kamen rider knight heImet and he has bIue eyes underneath his visor, i was wondering if iron man Ied eyes wouId bIeed thru a chromed bIack visor? aIso what stooI and frame did you buy for vacuum forming/what are the measurements? my dad's got some cIamps i can use but i'm assuming unIess they're made of metaI they're gonna meIt? where do you dump the dye water after? can i just use a trans bIack petg sheet instead?
