- Hello and welcome to part 4 of our extreme rust repair series on a 1967 Gmc van. In this episode we will be fabricating the rocker panels under the front doors. I will also show how I rebuild the inner structure of the rocker panel and wheel well.

Being over 70 and living in middle America I have decided that it is only natural for me to use music from a Canadian Orchestra for your show. I chose Guy Lombardo and a tune from his TV show, "One toke over the line", sung by some of his own group.

"I do it by this way because this aint no show van and lets weld this piece of garbage on the van" and after the job is done, the result is way better than its on many show vans. So keep up the good work!
If it was a show van I'd probably just mold in a fibreglass bodykit over all the rust and save a ton of time!

Hey Carter, way back in the 1900s Ford also made the unibody van. I was turning wrenches at that time and the local telephone company had a fleet of them. At about four years old the engine and transmission supports rusted away. Say goodbye to the fords!:( When I was rebuilding the cab mounts for my 64 F100 I also had to rebuild the air supply on both sides as well. The rain water was, by design, supposed to drain out the bottom at the corners that were left open. After 50 years of being plugged up and holding the moisture there was a fair amount of repairs. Three and four layers of metal seams and maintain the drainage openings. Lots of fun and looks good from the street! Thanks for the continued education!:)
I watch you effortlessly make these complex shapes and think “hey how hard is that?” then I try myself and fail miserably lol. As usual, absolutely outstanding work, and the humour is great too!
Just keep trying! Usually when it looks like all hope is lost the panel starts coming around.
You can make them in individual pieces and weld them together too, or just do that if one plane goes west
Currently working on lower cowl panels and cab corners on my 35 Ford pickup . Getting a few pretty good tips from your videos . Looks to me like the easiest thing for me to do would be bring them to you …

I am currently replacing rust on a 1966 chevy van. This is awesome! Since no one makes replacement rocker panels for these old vans, making them is the only option. Maybe I should get a bead roller. I tried to upload a picture of the rust but maybe youtube doesn't like me. Or, I just haven't discovered how to do that yet.
It's about time we get to pick our own darn background music in the first place. Good body reconstruction work there kyle..not bad ..not bad at all. If I ever decide to grab myself an old clunker and get her fix up, I think I'll be sending it to you and get you to do the body work ..

Overall I score this episode a 9 out of 10. I had to knock off some points for this weeks fire portion of the show and the lack emergency responders. Never give the audience a choice of music! Tell them what they like and force it down their throat... you know... like the TH-cam does. As always I learned something from your video (Damn it!) and thanks for always showing your support. I enjoyed ya bangin away on your junk, When you were welding it in I imagined "Dust in the Wind" because in the beginning you had just rust dust and thin air--when you were done it was solid metal and looked at least as good as new. Soon you will have a solid metal van where holey brown metal once stood.

I know you're not necessarily trying to become a TH-cam sensation but the angles, lighting, editing was much better in this one. I'm impressed how well you operated the shrinker with the camera in the hand holding the piece. Only subscribed a week ago but been watching your older vids too. Excellent mix of education, dry humour and cats.

Show car or not - I consider that a high quality restoration. I probably wasn't perfect when it came from the factory being a commercial vehicle.

first thing thank you for sharing with us, especially people like me who are beginners. The second thing is the way you explain it is absolutely great. I have seen others who weld things or straighten something, and the explanation you get from them is "I am going to weld this ."They fix it and then bring it and show you this is how you do it . Meanwhile, he didn't video it Well I didn't see how you did it it may be elementary to you but to me is very important. After watching a few videos I’ve come to the conclusion you can’t learn this trade in a couple days. I’ve also noted, you’re very good at it. Thank you, I have learned a lot since I am now doing my own 2006 E350 rocker panels. Basic tools, shrinker/stretcher, mig welder, hand tools and a English wheel. Well, let’s see how far I can go before I have to buy anything, starting with hand tools and some Sheet Metal Talent. Thanks Again!

Great video! I love watching you forging complex shapes and i am taking in everything you do to enhance my skills. Your work here i think is second to none, carried out to professional restoration standard. I am new to this, and presently fabricating a crusty Ford transit van. I don't have a beader, shrinker or stretcher yet, so have to bead metal in a vice, but i would love to be able to fabricate complicated panels like you. I have to splice and weld where shrinking is needed, but would love to get the standards that you produce. Only just found you on here, and look forward to more videos of your fabrication. Thanks for sharing. Great work :)

I thoroughly enjoy the videos you produce, i`m taking it as an education. I employ a lot of the techniques that you show on my own car rebuild, a 1958 Pontiac stratochief. Replacing pretty much the whole bottom of the car due to rust. I`m posting the progress on Facebook on the Canadian Pontiac page. It is slow going sometimes, make a lot of mistakes too. What has happened is that my welding has improved so much that i`ve gone back and redone some of the earlier repairs i made because i knew that i`d be capable of making them much better. When i don`t want to go work on the car, i watch your, Fitzee, Karl Fisher, or Wray Schellin, and i usually find myself out in the shop working on the car before i even finish a video. I have found that sheet metal work and forming weird shapes from sheet metal holds no black magic secrets for me. Your videos have led me in the right direction on the process that i understood in theory, but was always unsure if i could actually do it. Turns out i can and am not too bad at it. Yes, i have my setbacks and occasionally smash whatever is not fitting properly with whatever hammer is at hand while merrily cursing the sheet metal gods, but i figure it out in the end. I probably have spent my life doing the wrong vocation, but I`m pretty good at that too.
Thank you for the time you spend making these videos, i used to think this type of work was a dying art, but maybe it isn`t.
I suppose it`s inspiration. I have also realized that these vehicles were not assembled back in the day by rocket scientists, and the hardest part is just figuring our where to start on each individual area.
Thanks for the great comment! You're correct, it's easy to overthink this stuff, but in reality these old cars were pretty crudely assembled so sometimes the best thing to do is just dive in and go for it. After all people have been making stuff out of metal for at least a couple thousand years.

awsome video much respect towards your work I'm doing a 2004 chev 2500 not much left of the rockers under side door inners are rusted right out going the cheap way just going to weld in a 1/8 by 3/4 on the front and back lip sandwich it with spot welds give me something to weld the rocker panels to just to get a few more yrs out of the van it runs good 260 on it
