Celebrating Earth Day by Fixing A Rusty Van And Doing Cold Starts

  • Hey folks, I've been busy thrashing to get our van project wrapped up, but I wanted to put out another quick video this week. In this film we do a couple small repairs on the 1967 Gmc van...first I build a new cover for the fuel filler neck, then I'll attempt to repair part of the rear wheel opening. Spring is almost here so its time to fire up all the old junkers. I do a cold start on the 1950 Chevy pickup with a 216 straight 6, the 1977 Malibu with a 350 V8, 1935 Chevy Master with a 207 Stovebolt and 1966 gmc with a very tired 250 six. More van metalwork to come!

    It's an Earth day miracle! I love the carbon cam, I can almost feel it stinging my eyes, it's like I'm really there. From what I understand Canada is having a tuff time warming up this Spring. I suggest a new national holiday called "Tire Fire Day" and give Mother Nature a hand with this Global warming thing. Take it easy... it's got you this far.

      Thankfully, not all of Canada is in the "let's have more snow" area, Randahl.
      Here on the East Coast it's been weeks since I saw the dreaded white stuff. Rain though. Lots. Grass growing enough for mowers to be out.
      Sorry Kyle. :(

    As a sheet metal worker for 40 years , I am very impressed with your skills. I was taught you cannot bend metal 2 ways at once. You are an excellent metal worker and one tool I would recommend is a pair of hand seamers to take the place of the crescent wrench when making bends.

    Great video. For decades I have been recycling my oil back to where it came from. When I was a kid they used to spray used oil on dirt roads to keep the dust down. Over time they became almost paved. We cant do that now so we have dust. But it's fine to put 6" of tar (oil) soaked rocks down (asphalt). I make up for it by letting the weeds grow and not mowing to capture more carbon. See how I made that work.

      I just do it if I'm trying to weld a bigger gap or thin metal, it helps to have that extra filler. If you get your timing right the filler rod will melt in as your welding, it's just something you have to try and practice with, but it's not difficult. If I'm welding up a hole I feed the filler rod in as I'm welding so it fills the hole faster. Also works good if you're welding up thin metal or rust pinholes.

    Nice work Kyle, I was wondering how you would bend the flange, just a plain ol' adjustable wrench, nice! Of course the stretchers were needed too. Wow! Didn't recognize the spring time Kyle, never seen you without the beard. Your 50 pickup sounds like mine, but I was surprised at how fast the 36 turned over, must have a 12 volt battery on that one. Man you guys still have a lot of snow, I've mowed my yard twice now. Take care Kyle, you ought to start up a restoration shop, that'll give you a job you love and get paid for it.

    A ringing affirmation of how robust all your cars' batteries are. Some had to crank for a while but were game and stayed after it. Be honest now, did you charge them all before you did the video?

    • @CarterAutoRestyling
      @CarterAutoRestyling  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Didn't charge any of them. The 6 volt in the 50 is brand new and was stored inside all winter. All the other batteries were left hooked up all winter. The 66 doesn't have enough compression left so that helps a lot haha
