- In this video, I go over the best transmission option for the 2023 Volkswagen Golf R. The VW Golf R comes with a 6-Speed Manual Transmission or a 7-Speed DSG dual clutch automatic. Both are great but which would you pick? See my 2023 VW ID.4 Video: • Pros & Cons of the 202...

I just got my R in a dual clutch. What a blast!! Favorite car ever!!
You explained this perfectly. I like them both but you just have a way of explaining that’s better than most.
I love driving my manual mk8 R. Drive what you like and enjoy! With EVs on the way in, this may be the last manual VW I'll own.
I haven't driven this car, but I agree with your opinion on manuals 100%. They only make sense now in special cases, when they are done well. I've always disliked a sloppy, or imprecise manual and given where autos are now, there's no reason to put up with that. Another outstanding video.
Hello my friend yes I’m personally not a big fan of sluggish manuals especially when the auto version feels the opposite, crispy and quick, I would at that point prefer the auto. Thanks again for stopping by!
I had originally opted for a manual hoping there was a revised manual transmission with rev match option and shorter throw etc they just bolted on the same unit they have been using forever. This car is much better suited/engineered around the DSG
You nailed it in this video! 100% go for DC, driven manual GTI and at best it is mediocre.
Manual or nothing💪🏻
@@SuperNovaHeights_ that's what's up
Nicely stated and done man. It's all subjective of the manual vs auto debate and I like the way you put it. People will shame anyone regardless of their transmission pick, but it's all personal choice. Who cares what one thinks when it comes to this choice, I sure don't and their opinion means nothing to me. My 17' GTi Sport was a 6 spd manual, but my soon to be 23' R 20th anniversary will be in DSG.
Agreed my friend! Best not to care about what others think, enjoy your awesome cars!
Very well done review.
Great review man! I'm in the process of deciding between the DSG and MT. My last 4 GTI's all manual and loved them but with my getting up their in years i'm think the auto might be the way to go
All my Golfs that I've owned have been manual and my MK8 R is no different. I've never felt a need to upgrade the shifter, other than the knob on the MK8. I love it. Yes, the DSG is faster, I don't care.
Whats wrong with the knob?
@@lronSausage I don't love the shape - and the OEM units have a recall/TSB because they are prone to breaking/cracking on the MK8.
@@trentguild6086 I felt the same way when I first got mine as I was used to a semi spherical shape like the one from the GR Corolla, but I think it has grown on me and I kinda like it now. Another criticism on the mk8 knob was that it felt too light, which I also started to appreciate because it makes the shifts feel more notchy, and since it won't bang into gear as easily as a heavy one, the rpms need to be more precise before it willingly pop into gear which I think will benefit the transmission.
What did you end up putting on as a replacement knob?
@@scottsterry8119 Can't go wrong with either BFI or SportsShifters, IMO. I went with SportsShifters.
Nice video! I guess there’s a purest aspect to MT’s that needs addressing. Since VW is only selling MT in USA it proves some people are, and some aren’t. I personally love my MK8R’s MT. That said I’ve pretty much always raced MT’s accept for one BMW. However, on a somewhat momentum course like Streets of Willow it does get a little busy. But on Big Willow the MT shines and is much more manageable. Also since I don’t drive in traffic everyday that’s not an issue. In any a case to each their own. It’s MT for me for several very direct drivetrain connection reasons. Cheers!
My 6th golf.. I traded my 7.5R for this - one year in and I love it. Its my ultimate/realistic daily. very accurate review 🤝
Massive congrats my friend def a great daily driver
I have the 2023 Golf R stick my wife has a 2019 R automatic , I really like the auto the best .
I have driven 4x audi products with manuals and 3x vw and they are great I heard that the shifter can be improved a bit with this golf r yet I am curious on this dual automatic transmission and I think 🤔 that driving a really fast car with automatic transmission would be easier to handle 😊 I going to have to try it out 😂
No discussion of the gear ratios? Which one has a lower first gear for launching from street light? How about the high gear on the freeway, which one has the lower RPM at 70-mph?
Came from a Tesla Model 3 Performance. Bought the manual and absolutely love it! Not a fan of an automatic sports car. Yes, the DSG is faster. The stick is more fun! My opinion😎
Looked into the civic type R FL5 because of that crisp top-notch 6 MT, but the whole fwd isn’t doing it for me, as I am constantly “darting” whatever car I drive from a stop and awd does that pretty well. Drove the dsg for the first time today and tried the launch control and it felt amazing. I want a dsg now.
Yea my friend Honda’s manual is superb but this with a DSG will still be rewarding I think
Just buy a badass Neuspeed short shift kit!! They're totally badass.
Horsepower and Torque are much higher than what VW shows on every dyno test. Kind of typical for many manufacturers for whatever reason.
We are lucky here in Europe as we no longer have the option of a manual transmission, we have the DSG and it really all you will ever need, if you choose the manual version you will risk the chocolate clutch failing early.
It´s a good AWD compact hatchback with a powerfull engine and with the DCT it´s very fast but unfortunately Kevin the price in Germany is nuts for this car, but in the US the car has a good price 👍, thanks Kevin 😀
Man that’s crazy everyone complains about car prices here in the states 🙁
@@MeynMotorGroup the USA have the best and lowest car prices in the World 😅, normally you must be very happy there.
Yup absolutely best place to be a car enthusiast but all I hear are complaints. One person commented on my Macan video saying that same car costs 3x more in his Country. He said cars are basically free in the United States 😅😂
@@MeynMotorGroup Oii 3x times more this is absolutely nuts but I think that most of the cars have a normal price and only a few are out of control.
The UK version on the VW website has 420NM, which is 310TQ, so I think that's where the 310TQ torque number is coming from.
Thank you!
Drove the manual golf8r. Just didn’t feel like it was meant to be manual, had wrx hatch as my first car and while it felt right golf r was too easy in manual and did not feel raw.. More sophisticated and meant to be “grown up” Driving friend’s CTR felt great and characterized for manual. For a year I was looking for DSG Golf R but almost 85% of the Golf R was in manual. In 12 hours I will be taking delivery of 20AE Golf R in DSG!
The dual clutch is definitely the way to go on this car!
After driving both manual and DSG, I bought a DSG R. I love the way it drives. Shifts are lightning quick and smooth. It is an extremely quick car for a little 4 cylinder all wheel drive car that gets 27 MPG. It handles well too. I would take a Golf R over a Civic Type R or a GR Corolla any day. Corolla and Type R are both good for one thing. Golf does everyting well rain or shine.
Is there a gas cover lock on your DSG R or can anyone open it since it has no lock? I noticed in the video he just pushed the cover in and it opened.
@vandrosia there is a gas cover lock. It locks and unlocks with the driver side door.
I heard the clutch sips according to other owner's videos. So I'd probably get this in auto.
Yea maybe that started happening as owners put more miles on their cars. The press cars I get are basically new and I only drive the cars like 200 miles a week so I didn’t notice any issues with the manual I got last year. But for Auto is the one I would rather have
I was told the Manuals don't sell as well.. it's why manufacturers are getting rid if most of them. I prefer manual.
dsg equiped golf R are considerably faster than the manual versions.
And considerably more boring to drive.
I’ve driven a MK7.5R with a DSG for five years. I pick up my manual MK8 R in a month. I’ll let you know what I think.
I am looking at either the manual 2023 Golf R, GR Corrolla or Acura S Type. Been seeing a lot of negative review about the manual, but that is the only way to go for me. I will have to get a test drive on an Golf R to see how the manual is.
@@mutongoria I’ll reply back here in a couple days and let you know how it is stock. VW has always made a sloppy shifter. In MK6 and MK7 models it was easy to improve the shifter feel. I expect this to be a sloppy shifter from day one, then install the DAP short shifter and replace the pendulum mount with an 034 and have nice clean clicky clacky shifts.
DSG is a flawless transmission…especially with the Unitronic DSG tune when going Stage 1+. It’s insane how fast it shifts now!
Excellent vid. Idoliter free zone.
Thanks for stopping by my friend!
Surely the manual would be exciting enough. However, the auto is significantly faster and more relaxing if you are dealing with daily traffic. I imagine it will be sold at about 50/50 and most enthusiasts will say that manual is their game
I understand the speed - performance bump you get from the DSG transmission, but having owned a 2016 VW Golf R since new, I prefer the manual. In fact, I waited a year as the 2015 Golf R didn't offer the manual. Unfortunately, my Golf R was t-boned at a four-way stop recently and once again, I'm replacing my 2016 with the 2024 Golf R/ manual transmission model. The caveat is that my experience with the Golf R manual is with my 2016 model. Perhaps VW has lost their manual-way in 2024 and I will regret that decision. But, in my opinion the 2016 manual wasn't "sloppy" and I will be perfectly happy if the 2024 manual operates in a similar fashion.
I'm sorry to hear about your previous Golf my friend, I'm just glad you are safe. And yes, I believe you probably had a far superior manual in your previous car this is back when companies used to care more about performance cars and quality manuals. Nowadays, I feel companies purposefully put half baked manuals almost to force people into autos and eventually condition us into full EVs.
I hear your point, in fact I'm old enough to have been raised in the era of Muscle Cars when those in the know installed Hurst shifters to fortify their manuals. Over the eons I've owned everything from a '58 Chevy with "3 on the tree" to a Chevy Vega, Toyota Corona, a 1971 BMW 2002ti, the first VW Jetta GLI, a SAAB 9000 Turbo, four Fiats, and others with manual transmissions. Their crispness versus sloppy shift action was all over the map. Certainly, my 2016 VW Golf R shift action wasn't in the same ruggedness ballpark as a Hurst shifter, and it didn't invite slamming it into a gear, but it was fun to dance with. I'm hoping that my new 2024 VW Golf R 6-speed will remind me more of my 2016 Golf R than my '71 Vega. Have a great holiday season! @@MeynMotorGroup
I drove both. I bought the 6 speed. I do NOT agree with you that the manual is loose. I just came from a GR Corolla and I can tell you unequivocally that the manual is about as good as the GR.. Plus the 2024 manual on the R is the very last,
DSG
Hey bro
The review is sick
Yep im your relative from Kerala 😂
Hey thanks for stopping by my friend!
After all the internet talk about how bad the manual Golf R is I decided I needed to test drive one… test drove a bone stock 2017 R w/ 20k miles and absolutely loved it. The throws were notchy and short, shifted smooth, no synchro issues, never missed a gear, IMO it performed like a sporty daily manual transmission should. And with the available aftermarket there’s a lot of options to shorten throws and weight it how you want. I honestly don’t see why it gets so much negativity. I test drove a DSG about 3 years ago and while it was cool it seemed like the novelty would wear off and I’d just want a stick.
👊🏾👍🏾👍🏾
👍
Old guys are nostalgic for manual, but are afraid of throwing out their shoulders! 😂
I do love manuals but I just want a good one in the right car 😅
Go for the DSG if you like spending money on replacing the clutches every couple of years
Dump it after 3 years don’t hang on to it like a heirloom
@@MeynMotorGroup funny. The one I had had to be replaced after 18,000 miles. Just over 1 year!
@@artpereira well warranty is supposed to take care of that. A guy bought a new Corolla in 08 and his transmission took a dump in less than 1,000 miles. Dealer takes care of it. That’s really the point of buying new cars so you’re covered
@@MeynMotorGroup new is too expensive and there are no real options for keeping a car for long anymore because they break too easy. And the ones that do are still expensive to keep. So pay forever or keep buying a new car. Lose lose
@@MeynMotorGroup but I hear you, dude.
DSG is a big part of what makes the car a bit special especially when tuning them, they are pretty much run of the mill with a manual transmission
if you are on the fence about getting a pricey hot-hatch, ultimate daily driver get the DSG transmission.
These were always the working man's affordable sports car, but VW being VW if you get a good one it's great but if you get a shit one then you're in a world of hell by VW throwing you under the bus, and it's such a shame as this was one of the cars I'd like to be able to love, but just can't 😭
This is a car where if you love it and can get it at sticker (US) get it and dump it after the warranty is up and take advantage of the great resale value. I would not personally hang on to this like an heirloom those days are really done with these turds. I would say the most basic new car I had ever tested was that Yaris back in 2020 which of course they stopped making 😂
Blasphemous.... picking the duel clutch!!!!.
Just wait until that thing goes to crap ( like 100 miles out of warranty and you'll mortgage your home to replace/repair it.
I'd rather keep my 1971 914 Porsche with the 350 drop in V8 with a supercharger.
You're testing a girlie man car that is for people that can't afford a new Porsche or Lambo.
Hans and Franz...
Actually, i used blasphemous before you mentioned it in the vide.
I'm just breaking your balz.
I'd probably go with the duel clutch in that car if i was going to sell it in 2-3 years
Very interesting. Damn near 100% of auto TH-camrs always say “get the manual”.
Yea my friend idk what it is but it seems like the mainstream just reads off the same script.
Also, viewers simply want to hear the same old things regurgitated.
Average viewer has had little to no experience driving especially new performance vehicles and larger TH-camrs probably don’t want to go through the rigmarole of explaining the nuances of driving to the masses as it’s typically just met with backlash from the masses.
Yo bro good morning I got u on the yesterday video with comments I’m off work today 😆😂🤝🫡👍🏾👍🏾
Hey enjoy your day off brother!
@@MeynMotorGroup Thanx bro u enjoy your day as well 🤝😎
Surely the manual would be exciting enough. However, the auto is significantly faster and more relaxing if you are dealing with daily traffic. I imagine it will be sold at about 50/50 and most enthusiasts will say that manual is their game
So it's actually the opposite in this instance, the manual is very relaxing and casual wheras the DCT is sharp and exciting this is the main reason why I'm put off by the manual, doesn't fit the character of this sporty vehicle at all. The manual in this feel nearly identical to the 2022 Corolla Manual
