This is a Motormouth couple car review of the all-new 2022 VW Golf R hatchback car. The all-new Volkswagen Golf R comes with a 2L turbocharged 4 cylinder engine with a 7-speed dual clutch automatic or a standard 6-speed manual. 315 horsepower, up 27 more than the outgoing model and 295 lb-ft of torque with the dual clutch automatic and 280 lb-ft with the manual. 0-100 km/h in 4.7 seconds.Volkswagen’s Vehicle Dynamics Manager, a new driving dynamics control system delivers agile and accurate handling. Torque Vectoring AWD and new braking system. To help ensure driver confidence under braking, Golf R features a larger brake master cylinder for crisp and linear response to even small pedal inputs. The Golf R comes equipped with 4MOTION® All-Wheel Drive for sure-footed traction even in challenging conditions. Now featuring a new torque vectoring rear differential, Golf R can distribute the torque variably between the rear wheels, even sending up to 100% of available power to the wheel on the outside of the bend giving the Golf R a noticeably more agile handling response. It has a sharper looking hood, new signature LED headlights, matte chrome mirror caps, a radiator grille and an available light bar in the grille. Golf R models feature a blue grille line and brake calipers, a new wheel design, more aggressive front and rear bumpers and diffuser, a large two piece rear spoiler, body coloured side sill extensions, quad tipped exhaust system and 19” wheels. Golf R comes with standard LED headlights and LED taillights. The Golf R is available in signature Lapiz Blue Metallic, Pure White and Deep Black Pearl. Panoramic sunroof: $1,250 CADThe Golf R has a 2L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with a 7-speed dual clutch automatic or a standard 6-speed manual transmission. It has 315 horsepower, up 27 more than the outgoing model. The dual clutch automatic offers 295 lb-ft of torque and 280 lb-ft for the manual, it goes 0-100 km/h in 4.7 seconds. The Golf R has a new torque vectoring rear differential and can distribute the torque variably between the rear wheels, even sending up to 100% of available power to the wheel on the outside of the bend giving the Golf R a noticeably more agile handling response.
This hot hatch is slightly longer, sportier and has a sharper looking hood, new signature LED headlights, a radiator grille and an available light bar in the grille. Golf R models feature a blue grille line and blue brake calipers, a new wheel design, more aggressive front and rear bumpers, a quad tipped exhaust system and 19” wheels. You can get this Volkswagen in 3 colours, Lapiz Blue Metallic, Pure White and Deep Black Pearl. In Canada, the panoramic sunroof is sold separately for $1,250 CAD. The Golf R has a new digital cockpit that is clean and modern looking. This is a big change for many and we have been getting a lot of feedback about this. Some like the clean lines and others are missing the volume knob and temperature control buttons which do not light up at night. There is just one trim to choose from on the Golf R and it comes loaded with a 10” touchscreen, a 10.25” digital instrument cluster, wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, a wireless charger, head-up display, Nappa leather seating surfaces with the R logo, heated front and rear seats and ventilated front seats.
The Golf R 6-speed manual starts at $44,995 CAD/$44,640 USD and the 7-speed dual clutch automatic is $46,395 CAD/$45,440 USD.

What I love about the ‘R’ is that it doesn’t have all of the ‘look at me’ boy-racer looks, like the WRX or the latest Hondas. 98% of people wouldn’t know the difference between this model, the GTI or a stripped down entry Golf. Even cops... from far enough away. That is worth something. I’d buy one... but my sons have just finished getting their full licenses. So that will never happen. Thanks for the video.

Even when the cops are close by, most of them don’t know that a Golf R is a high performance sports car and how fast it can go. Drive a Porsche, Lamborghini, or Ferrari and you’ll likely be stopped and harassed by the cops in today’s woke mentality world because it means you have deep pocket for them to extract revenue to fund for their salaries and underfunded pension system that is going broke.

That’s exactly what I’m going for. I don’t want a bright red car with a huge spoiler and an exhaust you can hear from the next area code. I owned a tornado red Corrado VR6 and it was a ticket magnet. Thinking about getting a black Golf R and turning it into a beast in the inside, but keeping it stock and subdued looking on the outside. I love that they can be a quiet daily driver in normal mode, but you can unleash the sound and the power in race mode.

Part of the issue though is it has no looks at all.

This is a sleeper bigtime! Perfect for Canadian winters. I currently own a 2018 Focus RS and this is definitely a possible replacement when my extended warranty ends. Only thing is the horrible capacitive touch controls.... VW... everyone hates them. Bring back REAL BUTTONS and stop trying to be so fancy, literally every reviewer hates the controls.
Personally I would only buy this in DSG since the manual has a history of issues and the fact that VW limited the torque in the manual model says a lot. Plus with DSG you can get those awesome launches, which Car Wow got a 3.9 second 0-60 from.... wow!!! The Golf R DSG punches way above its price range. Great value for money if the reliability hold up.

Andrea has hops 2:04-2:05, great review amazed at how much the Golf has evolved as someone who had a 4 speed MKI Rabbit and drove from Boston to Atlanta back in the 80's.

Traded in my GTI rabbit and got my R on Dec 1st, and broke in just shy of 1000 km as of today. Can testify that Andrea and Zach are 100% accurate about this car. This is indeed an Audi-light, or even a Porsche-light (ref. Car and Driver USA referred to this car as Porsche 718 Cayman with backseats), as long as you can live with the haptic control. The torque vectoring system made this car extremely balanced in all drive modes, comfy like my wife's merc C300 (wife-approved), and uber aggressive and agile when unleashing the R mode. I've been very restrained in using R mode and dare not turning off the stability control to launch it until I fully break in at ~1600km. My first R mode acceleration *without* launch control a few days ago recorded 4.5s for 0-60 (and scared the heck out of my wife LOL) - that's before full break-in, before launch control engaged, on continental winter tires, and on semi-dried asphalt road at 3 deg-C outside temp!!! I can totally see how Matt from Carwow UK could pull out a 3.93s for 0-60 in his drag race with other same-class hatches from BBA. Absolutely no regret getting this gem.

For just daily driving not track driving , do you find the R more fun to drive or woth the price over the GTI. I got a 2015 GTI now and am considering the R for a daily driver. im just not sure the increase and price and the reduced gas mileage is worth if one drives 30K miles
      a year.

@@bucknut2000 I'm in Ontario, Canada, so I actually upgraded from my 2017 GTI to 2021 R originally because I wanted all wheel drive for my long commute to workplace. For that, I find it worth the money, particularly during snowy days. However, if not for the winter conditions, I'd say GTI is enough for daily driving. :)

@@bucknut2000stay w the GTi, if you need more power then give it a tune, and it can be put back to stock at any time.
I would put chassis brace, strut brace etc, sway bars and it will transform the GTi and give it new life.

    • @bucknut2000
      @bucknut2000 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

You are very wise. I actually ended up buying the the Golf R. i found a manual at MSRP so i kinda just bought it. I decided to keep my GTI because it has 230K miles on it and was actaully thinking of putting a rear sway bar. Looking back, i kinda think I should have gotten another GTI or the WRX. I like the R, its a bit videogame devoid of steering feel , but maybe Ill grow to like. The handling is amazing compared to the MK7.

This is more convenient than using a traditional knob in my opinion (as the driver) though it’s haptic

I cannot agree more. Please, no sunroof! I live in Florida where the sun beats down on the sunroof and heats up the car, which in turn, keeps the AC cranking (annoying and loud) to keep up. I just sold my 6-month old Taycan, which came with a tinted sunroof, because I could literally feel the heat on the top of my head. To alleviate , I’d wear a hat while driving.
Traded that for a Porsche Macan, which I spec’ed out minus the sunroof. The car is cooler, better insulated, quieter, and less top heavy. I’m not carrying around 120 lbs of glass and mechanism on the roof.
The negatives far outweigh the positives. Oh, and one more thing; sunroofs break, the seals go bad, leakage, etc.
You are the very first reviewer that I’ve seen that talks about sun roof negatives.

Before going back to my 4th STI in 15 years, I had an s3 for a couple yrs, even slightly ‘’enhanced’’ , with 330hp. This being DSG was the dullest car i ever had. Comfy and good but dull. Even my 1990 fiesta was more fun. Now in my STI, although very fun , analog and connected , it is after a while too connected, especially for the wife :-(. Now trying to convince myself that added comfort from a R would compensate the loss of connection of the STI. Thanks for the good vid as usual.

Sporty, can seat 4 if needed, hatch is a bonus, all wheel drive -just drove to work easily with some snow on the ground. Great review
    Two thing:
    1) real knobs/buttons
    2) a bit better quality interior material -- too much hard plastics
    3) honorable mention -- traditional head rests. One size does not fit all.

    Acura never really recovered from
the renaming fiasco. When I was much less well off, they made cars I wanted to own- I haven’t seen an Acura until maybe recently with the MDX type S (very barely) that I even wanted to test drive much less buy (except maybe NSX)

I seem to be the only person that thinks the new GTI is way too busy looking with the separate fog lamps and center strip. The new R design is beautifully clean, just can't spend $50K on an interior that fights you all day long. Be curious how well the ADAS works.

  • @cavavision5547

Bring back the volume knob?!?!? How about "BRING BACK THE 3 DOORS BODY!!!" If there isn't going to be a regular Golf, why trying to appeal to practicality with the GTi and the R. For me, that's a deal breaker, but a compelling argument for buying it in a family household context.
Thanks for another yet fine review.

Hi, I just got my new Golf R for my daily drive. It is amazing but I would like to highlight a feedback from an owner perspective. The Sport mode is very nice but the steering heavy and the hard suspension is really not the best for every day. Unfortunately the car does not allow me to set a default drive mode or remember my last drive mode choice. I could not see anybody realizing that! I hope VW release a software update! Thank you

The prices are high for an R but once you own one , you will not regret it.
Enjoy the car everyday I get in it 4 years later. Reliabity and durability has been great.
I don't like those extra gloss black lips around the lower intakes. Agree ,the GTI looks better in the front.

Great review as usual!! I feel the price is pretty high for the car size! I would pick the GTI as it is around 250 hp still fun and save money! And if I would pay $46-48k I might think of the civic type R or the audi for some reason :) I feel there's not much room in a type R for this price range!

Nice review 😉 as for the famous knobs issue, I dont’t really understand it, I personnally use the steering wheel commands all the time. Same goes with climate controls, I set my ideal temperature and I leave it be all year long, and very rarely change it (and never while driving). So what is it with the knob, haven’t used one for years, and for the same reason I don’t care if it’s lit or not, anyone cares to explain ?
