2019 / 2020 Lexus RC F | Has Lexus Done Enough?

  • Looking for a 2-door Lexus but can't afford the LC? There's a RC for that and you'll get the same 5.0L V8 under the hood if you're willing to pay enough. The high-performance RC looks as menacing as any of the competition, but unfortunately the more traditional V8 under the hood can't match the competition's acceleration figures. Can the rest of the package and Lexus' well deserved reliability reputation compensate?

The RC-F is a pretty tough sell for those who are German loyalists or number snobs. For more visceral people like me the RC is a masterpiece. It’s looks like nothing else on the road, sounds like Thor, and would likely will not break.
I know people get tired of hearing the Lexus reliability argument, but for people like me who can’t/aren’t willing to spend $70,000 on a car, buying one used for $40,000 that will still work 200,000 miles down the road is huge!
The RC-F gets outperformed by the M4, yes. BMW has decades of high performance cars under their belt. No question the lighter, turbocharged M4 would be more focused. But being outperformed by a surgical M4 and “being a bad car” are two different things. The RC-F is still fast. It still handles well. It’s still loaded with luxury features. It still benefits from Lexus build quality and owner experience. It still looks great, especially in white with the carbon fiber roof and spoiler. And maybe most importantly, it’s still has a NA 5.0L V8 that has no issues revving to 7,500 rpms. The RC-F is still a good car.

Yep, buy used and save 30K plus. My wife bought a white one with the performance package, so it has the carbon fiber roof. Its a great looking combination. Some don't like the looks of it, but it always gets compliments. I think it's because there are not a lot of them on the road, coupled with the in your face looks. The upgraded stereo is a must! Most people don't take their cars to the track, so arguing about weight, and times is a waste of time. Only bad thing i have to say about it is the infotainment system. Boy that thing is a piece of crap, other then that it's all positive.

Both my Lexus' are insanely comfortable and smooth rides in the city, and on the highway. Definitely not close to how strong my x5m was, but the ride is so smooth... its worth a try to test drive bmw's and lexus.

I love Americans going on about the M4 being the more agile and better sports car. You live in a country that has more straight long highways than anywhere else. I own a 2018 RC 350 and I have to say... I absolutely love it. I traded my old 3 series for it, and it's a much better car. I do wish Lexus would swap transmissions and go to a ZF as opposed to their AISIN, but frankly the car is a really nice balance of every day livability and fun driving. They're also pretty rare, so people tend to think RC's are WAY more exotic than they really are; no joke, people think it's some kind of supercar. Everyone has seen a 4 series and a C class and an A5, they look like every other Bimmer and Merc and Audi. The Lexus looks like nothing else on the road, which is why people stop and talk to me about the car all the time.

My RCF is plenty fast, license threatening fast, AAMOF, and I've had 2 years of trouble free enjoyment. To me, the NA V8 is preferable to FI, for all the usually mentioned reasons. I have much track experience, but that not what I bought this car for. Any track rat knows at least 2 things: 1) Don't track a car you can't afford to walk away from (or pay for track insurance every time). 2) Lap times are 90% driver and 10% car. What to take up track days? Here's a recommendation made more than any other: "get a Miata."

I think for shoppers who aren't really buying this to be drag-racing with specific competing cars, the RCF with the V8 will more than meet their needs especially with Lexus's reliability and the sweet-sounding v8 note which translates to many trouble-free miles of delightful and spirited driving. But if money is no object and the acceleration is a must not minding long-term reliability, I'd pick the C63s for performance, brand badge, interior/exterior design and tech and also a lovely engine note. The RS5 and the M4 look a little too vanilla like their sedan close cousins (A4 & 3-series).

Hey Alex, I have a suggestion for a vehicle function that I'd like to see pointed out in vehicles equipped with paddle shifters. Namely, what happens when you pull a paddle while the shift mode is normal drive. Some cars ignore the paddles until switched to manual, others will enter a temporary manual mode that either times out back to automatic, dynamically holds manual mode until it thinks you're back to cruising (Modern Mazdas do this, works very well) or stays in manual until shift back into drive. I know that's a kind of silly thing but I've found it makes a huge difference to me as a person who can only stomach an automatic if it has paddles that work well. Keep up the great work!

I bought an RCF over the LC (could have bought either) because it felt faster (370 lbs lighter) and felt more nimble because of the smaller size and the active rear differential. Definitely felt quicker and better in terms of handling. I also love the looks of my RCF, but looks are subjective. In the end, while the LC has more luxurious, the RCF has many advantages over the LC.

I wish the swoosh from the back LED strip was implemented in the front too. The front "Nike" swoosh it too angular.
Also, you'd be lucky to get 19MPG average on Premium only with this car, in addition to getting anywhere below $200/month for insurance with full coverage.
The car is not avaialble in AWD, $20k too expensive to buy for what it is and sits way to low for city curbs. I don't know... for $70k there are much better options out there, considering this is not even the GSF full size sedan inside and out. The inside is the exact copy of the IS which is $30K. Not sure why Lexus thinks they can charge $40,000 extra for a V8 and a hybrid platform.

RCF is 400+ lbs lighter than the LC500 so not quite "a little bit lighter". It is a lot lighter. Also, being an F car, it has all of the track hardware. BTW, 0-60 mph can be deceptive as RCF (RCF does 0-60 mph in 4.1 seconds) is a lot quicker than the Q60 Red Sport or m340i at higher speeds. More importantly, around the track is where it is in a different class.

This car is a prime example of the limits of ICE technology. The Model 3 Performance costs as much as the RC-F but it drives better and is faster without breaking the bank.
It is fortunate for Lexus and the rest of the so called luxury manufacturers that Tesla is lagging behind in quality and refinement.

    • @NothingButRye

Electric will for sure soon always beat ICE cars in performance. But after driving an electric car I just feel like an ICE car has more soul? IDK once price drops and once a EV car is released that I like the look of then I'll probably switch!

Had my RCF for 8 months. It was a great highway cruiser and rides nicely on NYC pavements. However, I did not like how you could only use the 2nd and 3rd gear before getting your license suspended. The gears are too tall to enjoy on a daily basis.

  • @coureurdebois
    @coureurdebois 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The biggest issue is that people choose the RCF to be different, but theres the ATS V which is also cheaper, but it's faster, more modern, and just as unique.
