More Than Most, Less Than Some | 2021 Lexus RC F

  • If you look at the RC F as a direct competitor to an M4 or an AMG C 63, you may be disappointed. If however you look at the RC F as an upgrade from an M440i or C 43, you'll be pleasantly surprised. As always, perspective is important and it's made easier by the (comparatively) low price tag on the RC-F and lower expected long term ownership costs. If you're looking at a high trim German coupe, you should be looking at the RC F as well...

    • @lostalx
      @lostalx 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@yungactivist GS F was same cost and people lament all over it why it was discontinued. Well the reason GS was removed because Americans bought ES, the cheap lame FWD luxury boat vs performance sedan GS. RC F is expensive because of the chassis engineering and the technology. I agree it's too costly, but I think Lexus does not even make money on the RC F. LC 500 are more sold than the RC F, and thus Lexus NA bean counters removed a lot from RC F like now it's not having TVD, no Engine bracing, no Lexus Memory. Yaguchi san will not be happy, but he retired a few years back. No wonder they are going to kill the F in 2026. Once GT3 LFR comes with TTV8, NA 2UR GSE will be gone. Then people will lament again why RC F was killed.

      What do BMWs and Strippers have in common:
      1. Slim and curvy bodies
      2. They leak oil every 29 days (well the strippers you know..)
      3. The more money you drop the more reliable they get.
      4. After a few years if you don't spend the money, they stop performing.

    Good review. As an 2016 RCF carbon/TVD owner, agree with everything except a couple of things. The rev limiter almot hits just under 7500 rpm so it is a high-revving screamer. The carbon roof adds rigidity and is 16 lbs lighter than the steel roof or about 50 lbs lighter than the moonroof so it lowers the center of gravity a lot lower. Also. the IS500 is not an ISF not because RCF is the equivalent of the IS500, but simply because there are lots of things in the RCF for performance that have not been included in the IS500 F-Sport. It only shares the engine/transmission, but none of the other F-specific hardware. Lots of track related hardware, that is. Cooling systems, brakes, tires, wheels, chassis bracings, seats etc. are not in the IS500 F-Sport. IS500 gets rear split folding seats while RCF has a big brace running all across the rear behind the seats. IS500 F-Sport will be positioned lower than the RCF in the product catalog. If one wants a balance between practicality and regular track days then RCF is the better choice, but 90% of the people want the engine so the IS500 would do just as well on the streets, if not better. Anyway. great review to watch.

In 20 yrs or so, the GT350R(manual) will hold it’s value more than the RC-F, regardless of reliability, because the GT350R is the only flat plane crank, manual pony muscle car, that revs to 8500.

Honestly, if I was looking for a model in this segment to be just a road car and not a track weapon, I’d have this over an M4 or a C63 for sure. All the capability and performance I’d need and enjoy and I prefer the NA power delivery. Likely reliability and a more livable demeanor certainly don’t hurt either.

It is also quite a bit quieter than the New IS as far as noise intrusion from the side. Just test drove it yesterday
    Pros: seats are so soft and plush, honestly I think those seats themselves are more comfortable then Mercedes s class. (all the european cars have hard seats and hard leather panels seems like)
    Gas consumption is not bad, 15liters/100 with average speed of 27km/h.
    Cons:
    Not very fast(faster than my 350 tho), doesn't feel fast immediately when you floor it, maybe even a audi s5 feels faster than this.
    Touch pad is hard to use as you have to look at your fingers and screen at the same time in order to click onto exactly where you want to click, the mouse on gs is much easier to use

It really sounds nasty with an after market exhaust and many have the option to get electronic valves but if it was factory it would but 100 times better. To me other than a touch screen some color change ambient lighting a electronic valve exhaust would be almost a perfect vehicle for me .

    Alex you have some repetitiveness going on in the beginning introduction before the size of the car.
    As you said, the RC-F is probably the best iteration of the RC since the 300 & 350 are honestly too heavy for the I4 turbo & V6. The chassis tuning is spot on & the engine just is a gem. While I would never consider owning a M3 or C63 outside of warranty, the RC-F is a far safer bet. Sure it isn't as fast as the Germans, but you get 8/10 of the speed and a lot more in terms of peace of mind.

    Great analysis. IMO this highlights one simple fact that I made before, the M440i is simply overpriced. If I wanted more sport then the LCF is a far better package. If I wanted GT, then the MB E-Class is a much better car for similar money. The BMW is a good car, but it's not great at anything and isn't worth the asking price.

    You can''t get any color other than black or white unless you buy and expensive option package
    Same goes for upgrading past the base wheels and tires

    A shame that too many buyers in this class focus on 0-60(100km) times. In my opinion, that’s the least important metric. Every base Porsche is a better driving car that almost anything else. Same for this Lexus. That V8 and chassis is better than the German options.

    • @ARentz07
      @ARentz07 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@james2042 I previously owned a 2016 IS 300 AWD which has the naturally-aspirated 3.5-liter V6, and since then, I have owned a 2016 GTI and a 2020 GLI, both with turbo four-cylinders that have the most torque at low to mid RPM. I do sometimes miss the smoothness of the V6 and the fact that it felt great to go to redline, but overall, the drivetrains in the VWs are great for daily driving and never feel like they are flatfooted. Having said that, I also have test-driven an RC F, and once you get to that amount of displacement it doesn't matter as much anymore. It doesn't feel as strong at low RPM as, for example, a Camaro SS with its 6.2-liter, but at about 5000 RPM it wakes up nicely. I think the RC F was honestly an entertaining car that handled confidently. It's not just about the 0-60... For example, the seating position in the RC F (and even in my former IS) is just perfect, and the seat itself is supportive but still more comfortable than many cars I've been in. I frankly love what Lexus is doing with the car and hope to see a new generation of F cars in a few years.

      True, it's not that important for ordinary driving. I'd prefer to see 0-60 and 0-30 times, as 0-100 excessively rewards forced-induction engines that emphasize hp over torque.

    I got an IS 500, thinking the engine is everything and also some of the nimble factor. But no I was wrong. For many reasons and primary is 3IS bumper sag. It kills the car for me, the car has a severe debilitating issue of bumper coming off. The fix by Lexus TSB in North America is a glue ziptie and epoxy fix, I don't know why but that's cheapest garbage ever on a 70K car. Next is the big thing, IS 500 does not have any of the Chassis Engineering that went for RC F not even anything except the exhaust they stole from RC F and the 2UR engine. The chassis has a lot of bodyroll, esp in Sport S and S+ modes, the interior does not have Leather option in USA and Canada only exists in Japan. There are no F enhancements like cooling for brakes, engine oil, transmission fluid. The brakes in the rear are weak floating calipers. The tires are also less wider and they wear out faster due to more smoother suspension. Lexus chassis engineering is really flawed in the IS, they cut a lot of corners. The car's engine rails are not high tensile steel for eg, and there's no Chassis bracing in the engine bay for a big hulking performance focused 2UR GSE engine. GS F and GS in general is a far more robust chassis than 3IS.
    RC F even though is from 2015 the chassis is just excellent, I drove a 2018 RC F used to check out, and the difference is night and day, RC F is way more planted than IS 500. LC 500 I never test drove, its more rigid than RC F but it's not a Track car and never can or will be as the car is very heavy, steering is more lux than motorsport and it's not an F car. RC F races in GT3 class at IMSA Weathertech won with Vasser Sullivan team, GT3 LM 2024 races also won by Akkodis ASP team. That alone speaks a lot about this Track born car.
    I wish I did not miss out on the 2021 RC F or 2022 RC F Carbon Package, it has bonded CF roof which is superb, that cannot be done aftermarket. Maybe we can get a CF Hood, CF spoiler, Splitter, rocker panels but not the hood. Sad. Also Lexus downgraded RC F in 2023+ removed the ubiquitous bespoke TVD, engine bracing, Dash is now 3IS instead of RC F's own lamest downgrade), no memory setting for driver since 2022. Lexus as a brand is dying, their new GX is a joke, LX is also same, LS has been a failure since 10 years. Only LC sells due to that build and engine. Once ES and IS are changed and lose their NA engines, its not worth owning anything.
