How to bleed MTB brakes

  • Brake bleeding can be an intimidating bike repair, but it's actually really easy to do-much simpler than many other repairs.
Today, I'm going to show you how simple the concept actually is, and get you on track to bleed your own brakes.
According to a recent poll, about a third of you are already bleeding your own brakes, so maybe you could help answer some questions in the comment section.
Get yourself some rubber gloves (I know I wasn't wearing them). Also rags and a spray bottle for alcohol or water.

If you want to find a bleed tutorial just find the model of your brake and search for it on TH-cam. The GMBN videos are great, and Performance bike also has a few good ones. When in doubt, just go straight to the manufacturer.

Mineral oil brakes are more reliable and will last longer. We rarely warranty Shimano brakes, they can be maintained to ladt a ling time. I would only buy or recommend Shimano as they are worlds largest manufacturer and can afford the best engineers and testing. DOT fluid brakes have had way too many issues.

Your videos are awesome.. you give new bikers, like me, the courage and will to try new things with our bikes. Taking away the mystery is huge and with my LBS backed up with repairs (COVID bike rush!) DIY is becoming a must.

I haven’t been able to find a video where I don’t get lost in the middle. Thank you for the simple explanations and making that whole demo! Excited to start the process of learning my own bleeds. Where I’m from a bleed for my front brakes was $80 :( so saving some money and time too!

That see through idea was awesome! Although I know how to bleed my brakes, it was really good to see it like that what and how it happens. Keep it up! :)

Great demonstration and video, but you missed a couple of important things:
    - That air bubbles expand when the brake system heats up and causes even worse brake performance. (More noticeable in cars and motorcycles)
    - Some brake fluids are EXTREMELY corrosive and will eat through paint if not cleaned properly. (Specifically, any DOT rated fluid and some others as well)
Keep up the good work and I hope you heal up well! I’ll wave at you as I drive through AVL this weekend.
