I have anxiety and panic attacks every day. I haven't really gotten a good medicine for it yet. Having anxiety like that just makes your quality of life go down so far and so fast. It makes you feel like something is wrong with you because they happen randomly and with no reason. There is nothing making you anxious and yet your heart is trying to pound out of your chest. It makes your soul feel sick

My now deceased dad would say "if you have a problem fix it. If you can't fix it, stop worrying about it." He was English and survived the almost daily bombing of his town (Luton) during WW2 including a time when he was working at a drawing board when his boss shouted "DUCK!!!". Four hours later he was fished out of the ruins of his work place. Meanwhile his fiancée (my mother) had been waiting for a bus when she heard the blast but had to rush to her post (she was an ARP warden/Ambulance Driver) knowing that the bomb landed near the building that her fiancé was working. She had to act professional (even though she drove four bodies to the morgue) despite living through one of the most uncertain times in modern history.

When I'm anxious I have a little checklist I always go through:
    1. I say to myself it's ok. I don't have to feel bad about it and accept that I'm anxious now. This helped me alot with my depression.
    2. Kinda like HALT I check my basic needs hunger, thirst, sleep and I'll add social contact now too :)
    3. If it's not better yet, I try to focus on something small, physical. Touching a certain texture and focusing on it or just hugging your favourite cuddle toy relaxes and let's your mind calm down. I recently started drawing and that's great too. Think about how the pen touches the paper, how the ink comes out of it, the sound it makes and the forms you create.
When I have a panic attack and I'm not able to draw I like to turn on an episode of Bob Ross. The focus on the texture of the brushes and the canvas helps me to clam down and not overthink the whole situation.
There's more situational stuff, but this already helped and friends in alot of situations, so I really hope this helps someone here too :)

Alyssa Cook I understand a little of what you are going through. I have just had a really anxious week and I don't even know why. I have had 2 panic attacks both at school during lessons and it's the hardest thing to be so vulnerable in front of friends and teachers, especially when all they say is "don't worry, you're perfect why do you get yourself so worked up when you are so strong a cleaver and funny" the truth is that half the time it's a show that I put on. The other day I told my best friend about the panic attack that I had in science and she just said" I get upset sometimes too." She could understand what it really feel like. Sorry if I'm venting but I needed to let some of it out.

Music. It's something I can control. It doesn't work all the time, but I find if I can plug in headphones and drown out all of the outside noises it can pause or outright prevent my anxiety attacks. There has only been once lately where I was too far gone (crying, shaking, hyperventilating, wanting to break something/someone, scream, run away, or all of the above and neither my music or huddling in a ball in a quiet dark corner could stop the attack) but once I got away from the crowd of people and hid in the parked car where I could cry it out with more soothing songs I eventually (20 minutes later) calmed down enough to get out of the car and help load the groceries into the trunk. Yes, I ran from the store crying and hyperventilating and getting funny looks the whole way out which didn't help my situation, but as I said, music is what grounds me. It sets my brain waves to a new frequency and sort of overrides the anxiety.

CVVZ Designs While I know it's not the best for my hearing,I listen to headphones for hours nearly everyday to help with anxiety.I go on bike rides and have to have them on,to drown out the noises around me.Around the house,it keeps me focused and nearly anxiety free.I always thought it was corny, when people would say things like "music saved my life",for whatever reason.I now see what they mean.

I remember I was once searching through all these videos, researching how to get better. If you are wondering does it heal fully? No it wont but will it get much better? Yes! You have to fight it, take control of it, your body will become familiar with the way you control it. When your brain relalizes that it's okay, it won't come back anymore unless you let it. Aniexty will not kill you, don't be afraid and fight it. Been struggling with aniexty since 2012 and I barely have aniexty anymore. I've had people talk down about me, degrade me because of my aniexty but I kept strong. I couldn't even get in the car without triggering my aniexty, my first plane ride was horrible, I didn't even fly but got off the plane. Yes its hard, but you can do it, have faith. Prayers to you.

    • @stinkykyle96
      @stinkykyle96 7 ปีที่แล้ว +23

TheCambobsherwood Sit down 10-15 minutes a day, maybe twice a day, close your eyes, and focus on your breath. When your mind wanders off, gently bring your focus back to the breath. Your mind will wander a lot, even after months of daily meditation, but eventually your mind will wander less and less. Every time you regain your focus, you brain rewires itself a tiny bit which reduces stress and improves focus.

    • @stinkykyle96
      @stinkykyle96 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

A word from the creator of all time and space etc.
      1) Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. - Philippians 4:6-7 New King James Version (NKJV)
      2) Yes, God created the plants and the chemicals and its uses over the brain conditions so its really advisable to consult a qualified doctor.
      3) Physical activity
      4) Attitude change
      5) Seeking wisdom from the creator
      6) Correct food and other lifestyles
      7) A supportive family

I have generalized anxiety issues (actually diagnosed and on meds to help with it!), and I find the biggest thing I need to remember is to not shove down and suppress emotions and big feelings as they come up. my anxiety problems often come out of having these big emotions suppressed for too long, so what I've been trying to do is actually just let myself feel them. which seems like a big DUH, but is amazingly really hard after a few decades of doing the opposite! letting myself feel down, or scared, or angry, or whatever it is, and working through that emotion in a really thoughtful way is incredibly helpful for me to alleviate anxiety and promote my mental health

It's probably because you were anxious that this video would help you manage your anxiety, but this video was not really that helpful, and really just reminded you more of your anxiety without much a solution to help,...and probably because the two guys' anxiety seem eally rno big deal, or at least not very comparable to yours, which upsets you a bit inside, and leaves you feeling like many cannot relate, causing some more anxiety.

Like suggested in the video, a distract myself with a lot of “little” tasks, especially cleaning.
Some people think I have OCD because I tend to tidy up my bedroom a lot, or pretty much wherever I go; whether it’s a friend’s house, the store, or work; but I personally don’t think so. I just need a distraction for my mind; cleaning is my own version of a fidget spinner. Plus, being in a clean and organized space makes me feel less anxious.

I always feel anxious and then I keep thinking about what I’m anxious about rather than how to make it better E.G. if it is homework I’m anxious about, I will think “what will happen if I don’t get this done” rather than actually doing it which usually takes me about 45 mins max. If you’re anxious like me a lot of the time, try to completely forget about what your anxious about by doing something (I know it’s difficult). It helps. Stay calm and have a good day :)

I think that it's important to let your teacher or professor know about what your feeling or going through. Your mental health is important too and in order for you to do your best and be okay in class, please feel free to talk to a school counselor. It's free in school too! Ain't no shame in it. Take control of it before it takes control of your life.

I really appreciate that Greg and Mitch are giving tips, but at least for me (and I’m pretty sure a lot of other people), it is really hard to remember these tips during a panic attack/a ton of anxiety. So much stuff is racing through your head that you can’t focus! I remember when I was younger, I started getting very anxious, and my mom had bought a book called “what to do when you are anxious” or something like that. Whenever I started to get super anxious she would give me the book, but I couldn’t focus on it. I would shove it away because I was so anxious that I couldn’t even read. It’s crazy how the brain works, and how it can make you feel so horrible in such a small amount of time.
Does any one else feel the same? Also btw I am better now then when I was younger (even though I am still a little anxious)!

I think the key with all emotions is to see them coming. And that is really something you need to learn, to know how your body reacts, what thoughts you are having etc. So the key is knowing your feelings when they are still moderate and you can still handle them.

something that helps my anxiety is this thing called grounding. it's where you look around you and find:
    5 things you can see
    4 things you can feel
    3 things you can hear
    2 things you can smell
    1 thing you can taste
it really helps me bring myself back down to earth and calms me down at least for a few minutes. it works best if you take your time and really observe what is around you.

Another GAD sufferer here, the best advice i was given in dealing with anxiety is to follow a daily plan of basic steps:
      1:get proper sleep
      2:eat healthy and regularly
      3:exercise
By following those 3 steps religiously my anxiety has become much more manageable. It's about routine and control over yourself. Anxiety makes you feel like you're spinning out but you can take control and it's like another poster said treat it like it's something you live with and not something you must get over = baby steps and small goals.

I use to have serious anxiety attacks. What helped me the most, was after I had a near death experience, I was able to ask myself "Am I dying?" and Usually that answer is "No" and it helps you put things into perspective especially mentally and emotionally. I would calm my heart rate and help me to see the bigger picture. I focus on details and I have OCD. So this worked for me. I follow all the tips on this video except I haven't gone to therapy. I don't want to be on meds. While this has worked for me, it has held me back from succeeding in my career. So I have some work to do still. I intend to. Thanks for the reassurance with these tips that I found way before I was even aware of it. Great advice!

If I feel myself unable to stop ruminating to the point where it will trigger an anxiety attack, i try to look around at my surroundings and name things I can "see" with my 5 senses. It really helps to ground me and can sometimes stop the hyperventilating and crying that gets out of control during my panic attacks.
Example, I see the dots on the ceiling, I feel my warm, heavy blanket, I taste salty tears, I hear my own voice or cars going by outside. It forces me to be present until I'm able to find a task that will further distract and calm me.

You are on your way to learning to meditate. Dive deep and you can force yourself into peace for a short time. Over the long term, meditation retrains your brain on its base operations and your anxiety will be less frequent. If you want to hard core turbo charge your recovery, learn mediation and then go to a doctor and get training in CBT like they said in the video. Your brain just needs to be trained how to behave properly for most of it, the chemical side can be handled better after training as well.
Good luck and I hope someday you join those of us that have broken out of the black-hole of anxiety.

Listening to a podcast is something that has really helped me. Whenever I feel myself getting super anxious, I'll listen to an episode of a podcast and I'll try to really focus in on what they're talking about. This helps distract me from my own thoughts. Also, talking to my mom really helps. I was reading that when you listen to your mom's voice, your brain releases oxytocin which helps you to relax.

I have bi-polar disorder with generalized anxiety as well as lupus. I’ve found it helpful when I notice anxiety or panic to do check-ins. I’ll text loved ones and make sure they are well, touch base with my own lupus issues to make sure it isn’t something physical and then acknowledge “Ok, this is unnecessary mind, you’ve been tricked by my chemical imbalances let’s refocus”. I guess it boils down to self-talk and for me personally, distracting myself.

When I feel anxious at work I take a min to write down everything I have to do. When everything is bouncing around my brain it's easy to feel overwhelmed. When I get it on paper it looks much more manageable AND you have the satisfaction of watching the list get smaller as you complete tasks.

Being open does help, last week is the first time I shared with someone about my anxiety and depression - that person is my childhood best friend. I've always appeared to be the stronger one between the two of us and now I feel like I don't have to hide anything from her anymore.
I heard somewhere that it is strong to make yourself weak so don't be afraid to share.
Also, another that really helps me is to drive, because I have grown up with no control of my life, driving gives me that control and I can go anywhere. If you're not active person, it also helps because I feel the movement of the vehicle is much similar to the wind blowing your hair kind of thing when you run.

As hard as it is, forcing yourself to do things you don't want to do helps me overcome the hard times. I was barely leaving my house and decided to hop on a planet to fly across the country to visit my family and I have been doing way better. Life still isn't perfect and I still have my moments...but at least I'm out of the house! Not saying to do anything this extreme, but if you don't feel like leaving your house...force yourself to go on a walk or visit a friend. I promise you you'll feel better.

Many times Anxiety is an accumulation of emotional trauma that originates back in childhood. The traumatic memories get stored in the mind and body, and any external fragments of the memory that go noticed by the subconscious become the emotional reaction by the physical body. Much love to all the anxiety warriors out there. #morethananxiety

One of the thing that works for me is to just stop and think: Wait if i feel anxious/bad/angry what does it bring? How does it help me? What benefit i get from feeling bad? 99.9% of the time the answer is that it brings nothing or it makes it worse. Basically i realise feeling bad about something or nothing (it works much better when you have figured out what it is that upset you) can only be detrimental or neutral. And then i tell myself i might as well not feel bad about it as not feeling bad about it will be neutral or can make it better actually and on top of it, well, you feel better. Basically realising and aknowledging that anxiety is self inflicted and not helping helps me to let fo of it. (I am really not sure if this is helpful for others but it helps me a ton). Cheers

Whenever possible, I listen to music to calm my anxiety. However, sometimes I'm in a place where it's not really practical to pull out some headphones and put on my favorite albums. If you're in a public place and start feeling really, really anxious, then try this: just take a minute and use your senses to observe your surroundings. Find a few things you can feel, a few things you can see, a few things you can hear, and a few things you can smell. It helps you feel more in control and less overwhelmed. I do this pretty often, and it really seems to help me. Hopefully it'll help some of you too.

I’m a little bit late to the party, but oh well.
I have huge issues with anxiety and I am on meds for it, however they don’t always help and I need some techniques to cope. What I when my anxiety is at its worst is that first I try to figure out what that gives me anxiety. Then I try to figure out why. If I can figure it out I write it down and bring it to my therapist.
If I can’t, I try to distract myself. It doesn’t always work, but when it does it’s great. My tip here is to make a list of things that usually work for distractions that you can look at when anxious and try. Some examples that work for me are writing poetry, writing stories, playing Animal Crossing New Leaf, singing, playing guitar, watching Netflix, cleaning and so on.
Thank you for a great video!

For me it really helps to talk someone, but sometimes I'm so anxious that I can't even send a text to anyone. Listening to music helps also for me, so does trying to breathe slowly. And one thing I rarely do even though I could do it is to pet my dog. I've also heard this one thing that does help anxiety. You just need to look around and find 5 things you can see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you can hear, two things you can smell and 1 thing you can taste. It gives you something to think about and it helps when you feel that you lost all control about your surroundings. I have done this only few times but it worked.

I have very severe anxiety and I've been told time after time to not only focus on calming my anxiety mentally, but calming myself physically. Take deep breaths. Tense all of your muscles from your face to your toes, then let go. Take a stretch break. Go for a walk. Anxiety and mental and physical so you have to work on both. Exercise and eating healthy are as important as going to therapy

When I do talk to other people about my anixety or need to vent, they think all I do is bitch. Um no, sometimes I repeat the a event so that I can rationalize it when I speak it out loud several times. How do I explain to people I'm not bitching, it's my anixety and I need to rationalize it?

Hey, I've been struggling with anxiety all my life (diagnosed generalized anxiety disorder here), and here are the things that help me the most:
    1. When I'm feeling overwhelmed, the thing that pretty much never fails is to remind myself that I'm making this bad and everything that's making me panic will not harm me. I look at my surroundings and remind myself that I'm safe and that everything will be alright.
    2. WORK OUT. If working out were a medication, it'd be the most expensive, most beneficial medication out there. It helps so much in so many aspects of physical and mental health, making you feel better, have a nicer outlook on life, look better and just generally feel better thanks to that sweet sweet dopamine.
    3. Realizing that I'm being anxious and that the way I'm feeling right now is clouding my perception of reality always helps me. Acknowledging that I'm feeling anxious or having a panic attack and that it'll go away eventually is a great way to relax.
    4. YOU'RE GOING TO BE FINE. That one is not necessarily easy to apply, but for me being told that everything was going to be ok by my parents always helped me feel much better, so I tried to tell myself that when I felt bad. I managed to convince myself that I was going to get schizophrenic or that I had cancer more than once, but none of those things happened. Managing to recognize that you're not being reasonable in your self diagnoses is important and has helped me tremendously in my day to day life.
    5. Similarly to the previous one: be hopeful for the future, stay positive and stick to being positive. Look at me, I'm doing fine even though I have a generalized anxiety disorder. It's not the end of the world.
    Have a nice day!

I get anxious trying to work in the house thanks to an abusive parent who used housework as a weapon, and that's enough of an explanation as to the why. What I do to combat that anxiety is pull up one of my favorite TH-cam narrators with their creepy stories, or I listen to some intense music (search Leave's Eyes. That's the kind of thing). Funny, soft calming music only makes things harder. It gives me something to focus on rather than the housework, and that helps a lot. It's still difficult and slow going, but I can get it done without having a panic attack or massive depression attack.
    Love the nail polish, Greg!

Hey guys! I was wondering what y'all think about religion... I am a Christian, not the trump loving gun loving hate spreading kind but I do believe in Jesus and all that shit... Even if what I believe is false I feel that it improves my mental health. What do y'all think? Just curious.

    • @rg5380
      @rg5380 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I think that is what has made religion so popular. Especially when there wasn't a scientific answer for everything, it gave people something to lean on thinking that it will be alright, god already planned it out for us

Religion made mine worse. I am agnostic now. That calms me so much more then the hate train of being told I am not good enough to go to heaven. Especially with practitioners who would deny people based on things that can not be changed. (Skin color, ethnicity, your gender etc). Why would that ever help?! So I don't believe in any religion at all. That helped my anxiety so much. You should try it.

    • @laviniashiponeni1
      @laviniashiponeni1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

My religion did. I am Christian too and it helped in a way that I could just lean back, say F it and give all my problems to God. Like people always stress me out and sometimes I get random anxiety attacks and I sometimes feel insecure, whether I did something right and like sometimes it helps to be like bruh I prayed today, I didn't hurt anyone and talking to Him sometimes, through panic attacks

I’ve found a lot of the time a major anxiety trigger for me is money. Writing in a calendar when all my bills are due and making a weekly schedule for making payments helps me control my spending, and know when it’s a good time to splurge, and when I need to scale back a little and watch my spending. I do this with school assignments too. Rather than waiting til a couple days before a test or assignment is due, I break down studying into manageable periods of 1hr at a time. Then I can check off each hour I get something done, and it’s really satisfying to see a list of check marks, instead of freaking out over how much I have to get done.

I don't really experience anxiety or nerves too often. But yesterday, I found myself giving a presentation to about twenty people (nothing new for me, I've given dozens of presentations), and I looked up at my hand and saw I was completely shaking. It made me realise that because I don't experience anxiety often, I'm very under-equipped for when it does happen. So thanks for this video! I'll try to bear the tips in mind next time I'm unexpectedly nervy. :)

I love this video. I've had generalized and social anxiety for years, and absolutely there are up days and down days. A lot of these tips do work, especially in the moment. It may never go away completely, but I think the important step is acknowledging what is happening to you and finding ways to manage it. The tips about making a detailed to-do list, and thinking about the 'big picture' are new things I hadn't considered before, so thank you
