  • Anxiety is one of most prevalent mental health disorders, with 1 out of 14 people around the world being likely affected. Leading up to conditions such as depression, increased risk for suicide, disability and requirement of high health services, very few people who often need treatment actually receive it. In her talk “How to cope with anxiety”, Olivia Remes of the University of Cambridge will share her vision on anxiety and will unravel ways to treat and manage this health disorder. Arguing that treatments such as psychotherapy and medication exist and often result in poor outcome and high rates of relapses, she will emphasise the importance of harnessing strength in ourselves as we modify our problem-coping mechanisms. Olivia will stress that by allowing ourselves to believe that what happens in life is comprehensive, meaningful, and manageable, one can significantly improve their risk of developing anxiety disorders.

I watched this with my mom 6 months ago when I was paralyzed with anxiety, I am 34 but I was so sad that she had to take a day off work just to sit with me and hold me and I was so scared and screaming crying from anxiety. I watched this and it helped me so much. Now six months later I am happy, I have a job, I’ve turned my life around. I was so far gone, I’d been so depressed since I was 15. But now I wake up and feel happy. No longer afraid to be out in public. Tapered out my meds I’ve been on for 14 years. I sleep at night and wake up refreshed in the morning. If my life can be this good then so can yours. I was so poor I never knew how to pay rent and now I’m independent and have the nicest colleagues. Hold on, life will be beautiful. Just hold on

      Fear
Be one with fear and you master it.
      Fear Is Not Wanting
Fear is ultimately rooted in not wanting things, like thoughts and or feelings, to be the way they are. The inner "no." We think fear is something to be condemned and overcome without even knowing what fear really is. But in reality, we don't want many of the things we think we need to overcome. In reality, we need to lovingly acknowledge and integrate the not wanting and realize that fear is what we don't want, and that the goal of overcoming fear is not necessarily to overcome fear, but to lovingly acknowledge and integrate the not wanting in order to ultimately find peace. Everything unwanted is fear. So being against everything is the ultimate fear. The way to make peace with fear is to acknowledge and integrate what we don't want. To want what we don't want. That is the path we must take to find peace. I hope you can gain understanding from this. It really helps me. I used to think I was weak or not good enough because I hadn't overcome certain fears in my past. But now I know that I didn't want those things and that's why I hadn't done them. So the fear is not necessarily there to be overcome. Because we don't want a lot of those things and that's okay.

      The Courage To Be Strong
The courage to be strong is the shield to protect oneself against the manipulating fears that attack one. To be strong in spite of this and not to let oneself be manipulated is the courage to be strong.
      The Courage And The Fear
Courage is knowing what you want and doing it. Fear is knowing what you don't want and not doing it.
      Courage Is An Art
Courage is an art. Overcoming fears is difficult when fear has the upper hand. When manipulative fears have the upper hand, we even make fools of ourselves and do things we don't even really want to do. Only when we unite with fear, do we have the upper hand with fear, and so at the same time the courage arises to do what we really decide to do.

We cannot do anything on our own. Only Jesus can and he will. Just repent and ask him into your life. He will take it away. He took my fear of covid during this lockdown when I was home alone for months facing great anxiety and heaviness in my heart but cry out to Jesus when you are drowning in pain and he will deliver you. He took it away overnight which I know full well I coudnt have done on my own. But whats impossible with man is possible with Jesus. He is the way, the truth and the life. You will find life in him in this world ruled by death.

A few years ago, a therapist suggested that I imagine that I’m relaxed and floating above everything: all my negative thoughts and anxiety and “what if’s” - and just picture looking down and seeing those feelings as I fly above and over them. She said I should picture that I see my fears and I know they’re there, but since I’m coasting along high above all my fears - they can’t hurt me. She was a very calming person, and it sounded great when she said it, but I’ve still not quite mastered it.

I always feel like I have to do things perfectly or go through a situation perfectly but when I feel like that I always mess up afterwards. You know what has been helping me with this? "Put yourself in uncomfortable situations where people may laugh at you" this makes you not to put too much pressure on yourself or feel like you should do things perfectly. Of course you shouldn't literally have to put yourself in situations where people will laugh at you but it helps to not put too much pressure on yourself because you'll be ok with making mistakes. Being ok with making mistakes can even be very attractive as well.

To all people saying that this does not help; seriously, there is no magic trick you've never heard of that will suddenly cure your anxiety. Almost everything she said, I've heard from my therapist before. Overcoming anxiety means DOING something, thinking less and training, practicing to being positive. You've probably practiced thinking negative for a very long time, this is not natural. So you have to practice again to think otherwise.

true; one must develop skills to be more resilient
for example: get a coin and toss it just before you want to do something you like -> heads you can go ahead, tails you cannot
this will generate A LOT of frustration in your life (anxiety) which will force you to seek other ways of doing things in your life
point is: nothing in life is guaranteed and there is little control over what you have
so, bother only with the control YOU can have and less about external factors -> this will train your somatic and stress response system to be more resilient
do this exercise daily for a month, continue for another if you are not letting go
this is an excerpt from Dr Harry Barry's book: "emotional resilience", there are many other such skills he teaches you in his book
i'm working through them with CBT approach while with my therapist we're doing psychotherapy; they seem to benefit each other
also, you must teach yourself to accept yourself unconditionally and decouple who you are from what your behaviours are, you will then seize on how you behave (what you do in various situations) from who you are (and thus, stop nagging on yourself)
      good luck :)

Is hard to do this in a Anxity Attack, but is totally worthful - however you only notice this after a few days. There's no anxiety turn off buttom.

I go to a lot of parties, and I never talk to people because I feel anxious. I feel light headed, my stomach churning and my mind racing in circles, only second after the other. I want you to know, yes, it’s hard. Yes, it’s difficult, and yes, it can sometimes be scary. I’m not going to lie, I’m at a party right now and my friend sent me this after I asked them for help because I was shaking so much. But what I want everyone watching this to know is that you are not alone. You will think of things that you do want to, overthink, or talk to yourself and that is totally ok. But you need to know that this is totally okay! I do that every goddamn day, and I want you to feel good about it. I want you to feel good about yourself, and instead of trying to feel good about others, feel good about yourself. One step at a time, and you will push through this, and this will stay with you for the rest of your life and I want you to feel proud of it because no one is perfect. And you will never be who you want to be because you are you and you are unique and I want you to feel good about it. One step at a time, and I hope everything gets better for whoever is reading this. Have a great day/night!

It gets better. Panic Attacks make you feel as though you’re at a dead end and can’t ever get out. You feel hopeless. Without pushing too hard get yourself to face what makes you scared allow yourself to slowly get more comfortable and the anxiety gets easier. I wish I could say there is a way to permanently ride of anxiety but there isn’t, but it most definitely can be something you can lessen to where life is livable and enjoyable again. I wish you the very best of healing you can do it 🤍

I agree especially when she drew the comparison between the natural anxiety people feel when they are facing a big bear.
I feel that kind of anxiety every day and all night.
Even trying to 'relax' makes me feel more anxious.
However, I am starting to face my anxiety more than I used to.
I'm currently taking little steps such as going out at busy times of the day and putting myself in situations I would normally avoid.
I don't feel comfortable 'yet' but the key thing is that I'm trying to cope in spite of having a severe anxiety disorder.

    1) Anything worth doing is worth doing badly the first time. Realise more often than not it's not that bad.
    2) Forgive yourself for your mistakes.
    3) Have a purpose or meaning in life. Think of someone you're benefitting and the work that will benefit the future generations.
It doesn't matter if they will know because you will know, and this is will make you realise the uniqueness and importance of your life.

You know...If you have to live life with an anxiety disorder, it makes ordinary actions acts of pure heroism.
Dead serious here. Our misfiring neurons are acting like our lives are at risk, and it takes us a tremendous amount of courage just to overcome that terror and do that ordinary stuff that irrationally terrifies us _as if it were a deadly danger._
So we're actually courageous people, since we're terrified and we do it anyway.
Terror is life's way of telling you you're alive.

A helpful TedTalk. Olivia Remes is such a good and patient speaker. She got my attention this way. Her suggestions for coping with anxiety are helpful 1) Do it...badly...Do it! Because it gives you a sense of control and eventually an avenue to accomplishing things. 2) Forgive yourself. Big for me. I don't think I lack self-forgiveness - but I (probably do) because it keeps me stuck on the wrong choices I made millions of years ago - like never finishing graduate school. I feel such shame and anger and unforgiveness because it trickled into other problems and got me "stuck" and afraid to make other choices. Yes, I will work to forgive myself. 3) Purpose. Find YOUR purpose. This is the least encouraging to me...because the heavy thoughts leave me feeling empty. Nothing - these last 10 years matters to me. Try as I may - I do start (Do it). I do forgive myself - sometimes. Yet, my mind is a big blank...try as I might - I am not able to connect. The fear, the anxiety, the unforgiveness (perhaps) makes me "think" - feel nothing matters. Still what Olivia Remes said reminds to "I must" find purpose. I'm glad this talk will help others. peace.

As a hypnotherapist, I help clients with hypnotherapy as an effective and natural treatment option that can give you back a sense of control and confidence.
So if you're struggling with anxiousness, consider giving hypnotherapy a try. It might just be the breakthrough you've been looking for.

I used to not have anxiety. I used to be so care free and so happy with myself. Before all of this I struggled with self love and I still do/did but not as much. I was so happy a month ago but then my anxiety was triggered. I’m not gonna say what started it since it’s a long story but I feel that I am not fully in control of my life anymore and I feel as if someone else is controlling it for me.
My mind tells me to do and not to do certain things and it’s hard to forgive myself for the smallest little things that don’t even matter. I overthink most things that I say and do. It’s almost as if I have a second voice in my head and not just one anymore.
I miss being happy and I miss feeling like myself. I miss being carefree and confident about myself in life.
I’ve had friends and family with similar problems who have gotten over their anxiety and they tell me this feeling will pass. It really doesn’t feel like it though I know I’ll recover.

@@karlarios5567 I’m so sry you’re also going through bad anxiety :( it’s been 6 months now and I feel so so so much better. It’s gotten a lot better and a lot of the time I feel like I’m cured and 100% again. It still bothers me here and there but if it does I can move on from it pretty fast. Some things that have helped me is grounding myself and telling myself that I am safe in the present moment, telling myself thoughts are just thoughts and they mean nothing bc they aren’t real and aren’t always true, I am the one who gives power to my thoughts and I decided not to, meditating, setting goals and focusing on important hobbies, and hanging out with friends. But that’s how I did it and I’m still doing those things. I hope you’re feeling better, it does take time though and I’m still healing!!

Today it was my first day of school. I was center of attention, I was embarrassed and turned red because of everyone looking at me, my heart was pounding, I felt hot and all sweaty. I wanted to go home so bad or just run out of the classroom to escape while crying, I held it all in until my mom called the nurse and she called me down. I ended up having a panic attack. I cried and cried getting thoughts like “I’m weak” “there’s people that go through worse” “I hate that I’m like this” I was so embarrassed. I’m trying so hard so that I can get a job and work to make money and start being so much happier with myself, basically building up my self esteem. I struggle with anxiety on a daily basis. Some days it's not too bad/doesnt really affect me and some days I completely feel like I'm in distress or I got this never-ending worry that keeps hauning me and sometimes I just cry as a result from bottled emotions. I'm not medically diagnosed or anything but I have pretty much all symptoms of anxiety and I never thought of going to the doctor as I'm 15 and I don't wanna tell anyone. I hate feeling lonely even tho usually I just don't like talking to anyone (in reality I want to but I feel nervous if I do) I also have exams as I'm in year 11 which is also causing me even more stress but I'm trying to get into good terms with my mental health. Just remember if you are watching this video too, you aren't alone and many people including me, are going through the same thing so we will get through it and believe in yourself because you will do well in life. So if I'm acting ok all the time, then that's how I'll act when there's a serious issue. I suffered with severe anxiety and panic attacks in my early 20’s. it was the worst thing I have ever gone through. Absolutely debilitating!
I overcome it within 12 months by doing the following:
Ditching anything with caffeine, ie: chocolate, & coffee. Ditching alcohol and smoking. Went to hypnotherapy sessions and learnt also how to relax my body. Understanding the trigger point of what was causing my anxiety in the first instance. Getting out of house and being around positive people, people who can lift you up and not bring you down. Going for walks, and enjoying a laugh again.
Turn your anxiety from your damnation into your salvation. Using self cognitive therapy you can fight it yourself without drugs or medications.
You fight this war and you can do anything in life.

Also I have a friend that I used to talk to but he moved away. He recently followed me on Instagram and nothing else, hasn’t even tried to reach out, and I have.. nothing back. So there’s an example. It makes it unnecessary to even reach out, cuz you don’t have to. A follow is the same! 😐

Watching her speak, I started wondering: how can anyone so admirable suffer from anxiety? Then it struck me that that's probably how my friends that know about my anxiety look at me. I excel in many areas, such as university, sports and social stuff, like giving speeches. What few people know is that I'm super anxious about everything. Just getting up and going to work is a challenge for my every day. My problem is that, deep down, I think that it's my skills that make people like me, that I HAVE to be extraordinary to be loveable. What I'm slowly beggining to understand, however, is that it's not me being good at something that makes my friends like me. It is way more subtle than that. I learned that people who are good at, seemingly, everything intimidate me - I always think: there HAS to be some fault with them. Why? Because everyone has faults and flaws. In contrast, people that openly express their "weird" traits and are okay with them are often extraordinarily pleasant to be around and likeable. Seeing the imperfections in someone, and realizing that they are okay with it, gives us the feeling that it's okay to be imperfect ourselves.
I need to get to know myself, I want to learn about my strengths and weaknesses. And I want to be kind to myself. I'm working on myself, yes, but it's okay with how I am. I bring something to this world that no one else does, and people need me. Tell this to yourself, empower yourself everytime you suffer from anxiety. We are strong and we will not allow this to control us forever.

I'm a pretty sociable guy, I can mingle with pretty much any type of people. An extroverted introvert, as how I would perceive myself as. I still am anxious about how people view me or think of me. I think ahead of time how to present myself if ever they happen to meet me. It's tiring. And it's not like I'm putting on a mask or anything, I'm just scared of being ignored or left alone.

High functioning anxiety is real. I had it, too. In front of other people very few people knew I struggled. I suppressed negative emotions and put on a front for so many years just to try and seem normal. Anxiety is a lonely and invisible disease.

Hey there! If you're dealing with anxiousness, I want you to know that hypnotherapy can really help. It works by accessing your subconscious mind to address the negative thoughts and beliefs that contribute to anxious feelings.
As a hypnotherapist, I help clients with hypnotherapy as an effective and natural treatment option that can give you back a sense of control and confidence.
So if you're struggling with anxiousness, consider giving hypnotherapy a try. It might just be the breakthrough you've been looking for.

I was so anxious about this afternoon because I have to go to work so I looked up to a video on how to let go of this excessive feeling.
Last week I did soooo poorly at work, it was embarrassing and I have been thinking about it all week, even though my workmate told me I did very well and it's normal in the beggining to be nervous.
Hearing your voice and the things you said made me feel so relaxed and confident (if I must say?)

Making mistakes is never ever a bad thing, please remember that, no matter how many times you make a mistake, if you plan on improving, and do improve a little its all fine. Don't get nervous if you ever feel like your going to make mistake, because you can't do anything to stop it. Its all apart of the process of improving, just be kind towards your mistakes and relax

I'm experiencing anxiety over the exact same situation. It's so hard because I know I try my best at work, and I still make mistakes, and so it feels like a concrete fact that my best is not good enough. On paper I'm qualified for my job and have the right experience so anything I do wrong proves the core inadequacy of me as a person. I've tried explaining this thought process to my boyfriend but he thinks it's the stupidest thing to believe. I know it's not rational but it honestly tears me up inside anyway. And what makes it hurt even worse is that I know even if I didn't make mistakes at my work I would find something to worry about just as much. It's getting so exhausting.

I tell my friend I’m going to cry and she tells me ‘don’t cry! why are you crying?’ I wish those words comforted me, but they don’t. That’s like telling me to breathe, but I’m underwater. I told her I might have anxiety, but she *probably didn’t believe me.* I told my mom I had a headache, she told me I need to sleep more. I told her that i didn’t know why it happened. *But there was.* I cried quite hard and apparently you can get headaches because of that. It was so bad. To you - the person that found this video today, I want you to know that I see you and I understand you because I have struggled with chronic anxiety too. I lived for 15 years of my life with daily fear, worry and feeling like I wasn't in control of my own life and thoughts. Until, one day I healed. I found mindset work and personal development and it changed everything for me. No meds, no therapy, just deep inner healing through my own personal power - it works. So my message to you today is: Know that healing is possible for you. I know it's hard to believe now, but I used to think healing was impossible, until it happened for me. Cultivate the faith that it's possible and believe it. You've got this. I'm sending you so much love💛
