    Be patient with recovery and realize that your own recovery is going to take however long it takes. Even more importantly, DO NOT give up on yourself if you're doing the work and things start to go really shitty for a while or long time. It doesn't mean what you're doing isn't working, recovery isn't a linear process where everything is going to go right all the time and that's OK. The brain takes time to rewire itself, but eventually you will get to a better place and it will be worth it. Love yourself and don't ever give up, you have something special to offer the world.

      I wish they were readily available in my place.
      Microdosing was my next plan of care for my husband. He is 59 & has so many mental health issues plus probable CTE & a TBI that left him in a coma 8 days. It's too late now I had to get a TPO as he's 6'6 300+ pound homicidal maniac.
      He's constantly talking about killing someone.
      He's violent. Anyone reading this Familiar w/ BPD know if it is common for an obsession with violence.

    Lifelong anxiety issues. The mind going blank is maddening. My brain literally stops in it’s tracks. Meditation, 30 min a day has been a game changer. Along with exercise. Journaling. I have so much in my tool belt, but learned a lot from watching this. This was a great video. Thank you so much.

      I have this exact same problem, it happens under social pressure, like interviews, i cant do them period. Did you have the same thing and you were able to get past it? Any help would be greatly appreciated

      @@rossetti1313 How are you now? Join a public speaking course. In life there are only 2 problems--mind and the body. To feel better reduce negative thoughts [overthinking]. Your breathing is closely related to the brain [mind] and gives good relief from stress-anxiety. To relax sit on a chair or lie down, neck straight, eyes closed and observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for 5-10-15 minutes or more. Don’t fight your thoughts. With daily practice the mind will relax. No deep breathing needed. Do the practice without any expectations when taking a walk, before sleep, in school, at work, when reading, etc. Like me, make this a lifetime daily habit to have a better life. Reduce negative social media and avoid constipation as it affects the mind instantly. Best wishes--Sr. Counsellor.

      This has always been my biggest issue. I had a couple heart palpitations and literally sat on the floor because I panicked a bit and that later on instilled a tremendous amount of anxiety because of my fear of someone else seeing me fall to the floor. The embarrassment I guess of needing support from a stranger if I'm actually having a heart attack or any other issue causes me anxiety.

    Helpful tip :
    You are not your thoughts. You are the observer of your thoughts. You ignore bad ones and move forward with positive ones.
    Trust me if you practise this long enough (it is a skill which requires months of practise) it will help you a lot.

      I really liked the "you are an observer of your thoughts". That's a good way to understand that you're separate from your thoughts and that your thoughts aren't equal to who you are.

      “The Power of Now” that book is currently saving my life. Observe yourself having your thoughts from a 3rd person view. Become the observer, don’t judge or analyze yourself having these thoughts, just watch. You will slowly learn to detach your mind from the real you. Your mind isn’t the real you, the real you is the one that exists in the present. Thoughts can’t exist without consciousness but consciousness can exist without thoughts. Practice mindfulness and being in the present. It could be something small like analyzes what you are doing in this very moment, that’s practicing mindfulness. Being aware of yourself in the “now”. Use your mind as a tool and when your are not using it put away and focus on being in the present. Always say “yes” to the present moment, surrender to what is and say “yes” to life. When you learn and master your thoughts your no longer a slave to your mind, you become free. So next time your doing a task or even eating, don’t watch TV or your phone. Do it being aware of being fully in the present. Whenever you have anxious thoughts, picture them as you floating in your back on water and the emotion is a wave passing you, acknowledge them but don’t react to them. Remember when you feel something, you feel it in your body and not your mind. Focus on feeling and not thinking. That’s how you detach yourself from your thoughts.

    I love you so much!!! I've lived with anxiety my entire life. It has impacted my ability to move forward in my career. Your podcast has literally given me the tools to get through my anxiety. It hasn't completely disappeared but I've been so good at controlling it and ultimately have overcome it. I hope you realize how impactful you are.     Your opening about the bizarreness and hopelessness of past anxiety is so profoundly relatable to me. I spent 28 yrs in codependent abusive relationships and where I am at now is incomprehensible to five years ago when I couldn’t speak with emotion without crying.

    Anxiety is considered the most common mental illness.
    Depression can involve negative thoughts that spiral out of control. Side effects from anxiety can also lead to negative thoughts, which could affect your life.
    While you may not be able to stop the underlying reasons for your negative thinking, you may be able to change how you think and feel about it.

    Wim hof breathing and cold showers changed my life in dealing with anxiety. You don’t even need all 3 breathing rounds at once too. One round is enough to at least calm down the oncoming panic attack. Be kind to yourselves; we didn’t ask for this crippling disorder. Peace be with you 💛💛💛💪👍

      @@bigupbig2198 the tingling you felt was your blood rushing trough your head and hands, that's completely normal. Your body however connected the fast breathing to hyperventilating.. thus your mind interpreted this as a panic attack.

    Not worrying about things I did in the past. Nothing can ever change it so I learned to let it go, Letting trivial things go over my head instead of getting angry. Not concerning myself in other people's business, gossip etc and not worrying about tomorrow, oh and forgiveness, all changed my life and helped me to sleep better at night. Most of the things I worried about never happened or if they did were no where near as bad as I'd imagined.

      Omg girl me too, i had black hair before dying it blonde then trying to get it to look auburn I had a panic then cried then laughed because I knew I could fix it but it just seemed so silly and it’s amazing how our brains can trick us to feel some sort of fear and anxiety w the minor things like you explained 🤍 gotta laugh and and cry and it’s what helps me cope

I've battled worrying excessively and anxiety for a long time and used to get sweaty palms, heart palpitations and tremors, but my anxiety is perfectly controlled by me now over the years with all the important research I did and learnt about anxiety.       you feel anxiety about something (anything) because on some level you CARE about that something. Just change your attitude and say " I do not care anymore. let it go to hell or whatever, I am walking away from it" and just LEAVE that thing mentally and emotionally. Divorce it in your mind. Gee, I love the attitude, it really helps.

      This will be a lengthy reply, but I think it will be well worth the read Elena. First off, I highly suggest checking out "When Panic Attacks" by Dr. David Burns. Fantastic book and it's one of the best I've read related to anxiety and panic with many practical tools and techniques you can use to overcome and actually BEAT anxiety, not just manage it. Also, check out "Healing and Recovery" and "Letting Go" by Dr. David R. Hawkins. He was one of the pioneers in the research of consciousness and offers such an interesting twist to how our minds work along with our consciousness and awareness to give additional tools to beat anxiety and many, many other hard times in life. Both of them have prior experience with dealing with anxiety in their own lives and were both highly sought psychiatrists for decades. I suggest "When Panic Attacks" for solid tools to beat the anxiety, and "Healing and Recovery" as well as "Letting Go" for tools on how to no longer let things bother you, and also to give you the tools to deal with virtually any potential emotional or physical setback you may face in the future.
      Brief backstory but I believe it is notable. I had a panic attack about 12 years ago after smoking some cannabis that didn't agree with me. Prior to that I never had any anxiety of any kind, but I was sort of a natural "worrier" as my mother would put it, which is what made me susceptible to ongoing anxiety as you will see. Anyway, instead of just attributing the attack to the weed and moving on with life which would make the most sense, I instead, developed a fear of the panic and anxiety itself which is called "second fear" coined by Dr. Claire Weekes if I recall correctly, and worried daily about it returning. So much so, that I ended up having a 2 or 3 year stint of crippling anxiety.
      Now, I don't know if it was due being 20 at the time and stubborn along with self medicating through alcohol (which blunts the lower levels of consciousness where anxiety thrives) but I eventually came out of it on my own without seeking any sort of therapy or medication help and besides the occasional feeling of very mild anxiety here and there which was fleeting, and would only last a minute or so in the form of VERY mild nervousness in my solar plexus region, I was virtually anxiety free for years until a month and a half ago.
      I'll spare you the details, but I've had many circumstances over the last 3 or 4 of years that I've subconsciously repressed the emotions of, as well as consciously suppressing said emotions as well in the name of being a "strong man." Well let me tell you, after locking emotions away long enough or just 'ignoring them' anyone can be broken. So long story short, my anxiety returned with a vengeance about a month and a half ago. It completely blindsided me. Keep in mind, anxiety hardly ever occurs 'out of the blue.' There is almost always a underlying issue or issues and the anxiety is your minds way of saying "there is something you need to deal with."
      I became house bound, stopped eating, lost a little over 20lbs, stopped working out, stopped going hiking with my wife and son, couldn't sit still at all, paced for hours at a time, dreaded laying down to go to sleep for fear of my idle mind, and my libido crashed. My life was turned upside down overnight. I went from being the stoic figure in my family who you could always turn to no matter the situation, who always remained calm, cool and collected, to being a house bound, shell of my former self who was scared to be alone in case the panic occurred. I was in sheer fear and terror 24/7. Being that I'm 33 now and not nearly as stubborn as when I was young, I immediately sought out a counselor, who then referred me to a great doctor and I began trying things out, as I was NOT about to let this turn into an ongoing deal like in the past.
      The books I've mentioned to you, especially "When Panic Attacks" have 100% made a world of difference in a very short amount of time. Reading books like that and trying techniques on your own is actually a form of therapy in and of itself, called bibliotherapy. I've read 6 books in the last month all to do with anxiety, depression etc. So I unknowingly did a ton a bibliotherapy myself without knowing it until I read about the term. Just reading about anxiety from prominent sources and learning what it actually is and how it truly works is very therapeutic in and of itself.
      I'm now getting back to leaving the house, my libido is just about back to normal, my appetite has been back for a couple of weeks and instead of getting back to working out in my garage gym, I'm going to rejoin my local, busy, but awesome bodybuilding and powerlifting gym. Why not? I was even able to attend a very crowded fireworks display on the 4th of July with thousands of people which also included sitting stuck in traffic for an hour and I had minimal to zero problems. A month ago you couldn't have paid me a million bucks to step foot outside of the house and that's putting it lightly. I'm not 100% where I want to be, and I still have my moments, but I'm leaps and bounds better than I was just a mere few weeks ago and I'm going to keep getting better and better thanks to all of the insight, knowledge and tools I've picked up in the books I've read. I owe all my progress primarily to the 3 books I've mentioned along with putting the techniques to work. I see no reason in trying to "manage anxiety" when it can in fact, be beaten with the proper work ethic and courage. Trying to just deal with it and hoping it will resolve itself will not do it. Drastic, quick steps must be taken and some of them WILL be scary at time and uncomfortable but THAT is the key, along with uncovering any hidden issues you or anyone might be suppressing, or avoiding. Usually it's quite obvious what the the underlying issue is, but you get so good at blowing things off, that it can take some detective work on your part. The anxiety and panic can be terrifying and it certainly was for me, and I just assumed it came 'out of the blue' but that is rarely the case. Accept that it's there, learn about it, don't run from it, don't use your typical avoidance measures to try and calm yourself and be prepared to put yourself in the thick of it to retrain your amygdala.
      Again, the key is acceptance of the circumstances, not viewing the anxiety as your foe, but more so your ally that is indicating that something needs to be addressed and be willing to put in the required work to beat it. It takes courage and it will be difficult but it's well worth it. Exposure of some kind will be paramount in overcoming anxiety and panic as well. If you take nothing else from this, just know that you CAN beat anxiety and not just "manage it" but you've got to work for it. In closing, if you haven't read it yet, do checkout "When Panic Attack." It could very well change your life. It is one of the BEST books I've read in regards to anxiety and panic and it has so many different types of techniques with thorough explanations of how to use them to your advantage, especially cognitive exposure, which is key for someone like me who doesn't have a specific anxiety "trigger" other than the fear of the anxiety itself.       Elena, 30 years is too long. How are you now? In life there are only 2 problems--mind and the body. To feel better reduce negative thoughts [overthinking]. Your breathing is closely related to the brain [mind] and gives good relief from stress-anxiety. To relax sit on a chair or lie down, neck straight, eyes closed and observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for 5-10-15 minutes or more. Don’t fight your thoughts. With daily practice the mind will relax. No deep breathing needed. Do the practice without any expectations when taking a walk, before sleep, in school, at work, when reading, etc. Like me, make this a lifetime daily habit to have a better life.     Imagine meditation like surfing - when you lose focus..it's like falling off the board...so just get back on the board without self judgment...just return your focus to the object of your meditation

    Becoming alcohol free has completely changed my anxiety issues. Who knew ? I drank to relieve my social anxiety but it turns out that was the cause. Without alcohol I feel grounded and solid and I can also see there are just some situations I don’t enjoy - so I leave and do something that’s more in line with my values and likes.

    When I was a professional singer, I used to get stage fright. Right before I went on, I would feel that wave of anxiety take over my body. What I discovered was that if I let the wave have its way and wash through me, without trying to divert it, talk myself out of it, pretend it wasn't there, pretend it didn't matter, it only got worse. When I sat with it, gave it all my attention, and fully felt it, it would peak, and then evaporate. Dr. David Hawkins uses this technique with all emotions. He says, don't try to talk yourself out of it. You will just stuff it down into your body until it wants to come out again. Instead, allow it to rise , to create its feeling, give it your full attention, DON'T TELL A STORY ABOUT IT, just feel it, and surrender it. Soon it will no long live inside of you waiting to get out. It already got out. This works great for me no matter what the feeling, or how unpleasant it is. It always passes when you let it move through you and out of you.

      Hmm, I'll consider that. I tend to stuff and try and dismiss the bad feelings. I faced some really negative feelings the other day. Wrote them out and it they did seem to dissolve for awhile.

      I think that's great advice. I'm having some anxiety right now (I have GAD) and it is SO difficult to accept it and fully feel it. I think Eckhart Tolle says much the same as you did about anxiety - and other mental stress.

      @@i_love_rescue_animals I think the trick is to acknowledge it briefly. Like writing the feelings out, but also putting forth an intention to get past. I do the Dr. Joe Dispenza meditations and it helps a great deal to get past depression and anxiety. I'm having much better days. It's a process, but I'm seeing healing w/ irritable bowel syndrome, which was becoming a daily blight w/ a terrible breakup. In around a month and a half, the gains are noticable. And the gains are encouraging more effort. I have to get ahold of my thoughts first thing in the morning and when I can't sleep. Instead of stewing, relentlessly push myself to more positive thinking. It's a matter of rewiring old circuits and creating new healthy pathways as the man said. It happens w/ time and effort.

    This video was really am eye opener. The anxiety, as Tom described, is exactly how i have felt for decades, thinking it was normal.     Thank you Tom for being this open and direct about your experience with anxiety I am one of those doing it wrong for 30 years and had just started understanding bits and pieces almost a decade ago through really tough times and I had just started getting physical anxiety aches coincidentally after 45 days quitting pornography but is probably more tied to the screaming family of origin I moved in with but I'm gonna do better than this I have what it takes to succeed and do well for myself I haven't worked in 3 years and haven't held a job long in 6 but I believe every word you are saying here everything I've been doing wrong is going to be made right and it won't be long I will out there working well with everyone so I can start my own business growing vegetables and do everything that I want to do, thank you for reading this and have a great week.

    what helped me to kill anxiety is the attitude i developed over the years - "I do not give a hsit" and walking away from it mentally. Works like a charm.

    Great video! It seems for me as I get older the anxiety and depression gets worse at times. I've found alcohol even a couple drinks causes a delayed onset of anxiety a couple days later.
    I've quit all alcohol and noticed a difference.
    Exercise for me particularly cardio does wonders.
    I wish everyone luck with their anxiety issues. It's no fun.

    I too suffered with paryalzing anxiety attacks for many years and over time I used nutrition, exercise and my spiritual life to help me and happy to report now my anxiety attacks bad days is far and few between that I live pretty much a normal life….. great video I’m going to share with a friend of mine who suffers worse then me …..

    The more I grow in my own process and study different material, I see the synchronicities all across the board! I’m sure I’m not the first or only to say this, but in my knowing, those who experience severe anxiety are, highly and I mean highly, underestimating their ability to manifest and grow into the individual they want to become. I only use the word underestimate as an identification/representation of where your current energy and attention is flowing. Little to nothing to do with being special (we all are - you’re a 1 of 1), & I do understand and respect the biological process which an individual undergoes in the brain. But for a moment, imagine a spectrum representing the power of your consciousness (or one of the many spectrums inside of your infinite nature) & on one end is the crippling anxiety you’ve felt. Knowing the reality of that end of the spectrum, let me ask you - what’s on the opposite side? It’s as real as what you’ve became accustom to… To my knowing, what’s on the opposite side is a clarity, peace and abundance as unique as your current individuality. Right now, consider and acknowledge yourself a master of feeling anxiety, and let yourself know (with grace in your heart) that it’s time to embrace the other side of the spectrum. I’m here to tell you your overworking anxiety isn’t here to stay, or even to return as a lurking enemy. You will look back at those moments with a gratitude and appreciation for the fullness of experience. Continue to study, use the techniques and tactics, heal your biological body and continue to shift your energy. Remember!! Just like the man who thinks he can and the man who thinks he can’t - What is hard and what is EASY is a matter of your perspective and your choice!! Enjoy an easy journey my friends 🏁

    Thank you so so much for this! I have some social anxiety ever since I had a situation that had me freeze up about a year ago and after that I feel it only got worse because I constantly do think the worse and plan for the worse and I even plan out situations and how I’m going to greet someone once I see them when it could just be something super natural. I need to stop doing that. That’s the answer and instead reinforce positive thinking and not “planning out scenarios”

Amen. Well said. My brain does that too. Those darned brains, gotta learnhow to live with your own!

      Well-said and so true. Your brain starts creating more and more scenarios that will lead to anxiety to where you just prefer to stay in the few scenarios where you are comfortable. It’s horrible, restricting and dominates your mind.

      Victoria, How are you now? In life there are only 2 problems--mind and the body. To feel better reduce negative thoughts [overthinking]. Your breathing is closely related to the brain [mind] and gives good relief from stress-anxiety. To relax sit on a chair or lie down, neck straight, eyes closed and observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for 5-10-15 minutes or more. Don’t fight your thoughts. With daily practice the mind will relax. No deep breathing needed. Do the practice without any expectations when taking a walk, before sleep, in school, at work, when reading, etc. Like me, make this a lifetime daily habit to have a better life. Reduce negative social media and avoid constipation as it affects the mind instantly. Best wishes--Sr. Counsellor.

    I feel like you were in my brain. I have dealt with the exact same issues until I went to a therapist and went through cognitive behavioral therapy. It was honestly, probably the most important thing I've ever done to improve my life.

    I’ve recently been dealing with extremely debilitating anxiety. I’ve stopped driving, I’ve lost weight due to avoiding certain foods, I’ve stopped working and it’s affected my performance in school. All of my anxiety is focused on something happening to me and this is something terrible, like dying at a young age. Every single thing that happens to me I think is going to kill me. I’m always afraid of passing out or having a stroke or seizure or cancer or something that doctors just can’t find. I’m 24 years old and completely healthy (according to doctors). I feel trapped in my own head and it’s affecting every aspect of my life. I’m currently in therapy and taking medication and have found a little bit of relief but not much. This video has helped me quite a bit and I hope to take your advice and hopefully change my life. I never want to rehearse failure (or dying in my case) again.

      The only way I can calm my anxiety (horrible, fast arrhythmia, and panic, often in the middle of the night, but not always) is to bring some perspective in. This sounds crazy, but I remind myself I'm tiny in an infinite cosmos, but that my soul is as huge as the cosmos, that I will die one day, and so shall we all, and that if that's the worst that can happen, its fine! Because we all will die. Also, I read Living the Untethered Soul or The Power of Now, or The Biology of Belief (about the power of the mind over the body) and I will immediately feel better (well, I'll start to feel better) because, again, it gives a kind perspective and also reminds me I'm not my thoughts or my feelings. Hang in there. I'm sooooo much better than I was in my 20s. If I'd had the Internet then, I'd have felt better, sooner!

    I really enjoyed listening to this. I have been battling anxiety for almost 2 years. First it was health anxiety along with palpitations, muscle cramps, sleep starts etc. And now it’s just ‘oh gosh what if I can’t beat this, what if I feel scared forever’?! The pattern interrupt is definitely something I will use to combat this negative thought loop. I’ve become so impatient with myself and my bodily symptoms but it seems time and repetition are the key tools so it’s time to accept that.
    Thanks for this video, it really helped.

    Anxiety everyone has it, but some of us get full blown panic attacks and are stuck in a state of panic cycle with avoidance behaviors, allot of this is good advice learning how you got into the cycle is a good way to learn how to get out of it.

    My problem starts with a negative thought that catastrophizes and starts spiraling down. Thinking bizarre thoughts like I’m gonna lose my job because I won’t be able to go to work due to anxiety, thinking I won’t be able to sleep cause of anxiety. It’s so hard to get out of that mind space. It’s crippling. I meditate and feel fine while meditating but then anxiety comes back after it’s over. It really is the worst thing ever.

      I hear you - this is exactly me! Once we go down that rabbit hole its so hard to pull ourselves out of it. Crippling is exactly what it is. Meditation has been my saviour but like you, anxiety creeps back in sometimes afterwards. Anxiety is a habit unfortunately along with many other things/reasons. Acceptance is the key- I have had my best break through's when I have stopped, acknowledged my anxiety and talk to myself with self soothing words then continue to ride the waves with acceptance. Always goes away much faster then when I resist.
      I honestly would not wish any Anxiety/Panic disorder on anyone. It steals so much of our energy and so much precious time away from enjoying life 💖

      Me too!! It's like I wrote this...mines every morning. Wake up heart pounding..sweaty...hormones for sure and check your iron! Cause low iron causes and Mimics anxiety.!!
