Looking back on this video, I must say that while I stand by most of the points I made, I also need to make some corrections/add-ons, since some points are somewhat unfair:
    - Pokémon do have flinching animations in Sw/Sh, just very short and unimpactful.
    - Flinching/dying animations are a bit too long in Colosseum, and while they can be turned off if you want to save time, a half way point between them and Sw/Sh would be the ideal duration.
    - Rain and sandstorms don't stay on during battle in Colosseum, they just play for a couple seconds and go away, probably due to hardware limitations. Sandstorms in Colosseum look bad too, being just an overlay like in Sw/Sh.
    - There oviously were less Pokémon in Colosseum than in Sw/Sh. I don't think this is an excuse though, since making so many different Pokémon throuhgout the years was their decision and they should have planned for this situation better.
    - I chose Colosseum over Battle Revolution since Colosseum also has a storyline outside of battles, making it more similar to Sw/Sh and, in my opinion, a fairer comparison. I chose Colosseum over XD: Gale of Darkness because I simply like it better.
    - Sudowoodo pretends to be a tree, but it is not a tree. It absolutely does and should move, even during idle animation. Colosseum nailed it whith it switching its arms around, making it completely frozen in time and justifying it through the Pokédex is just undefendable.
    - I should have also commented that the music and sound design of Colosseum is in my opinion far superior to that of Sw/Sh.
    - Also forgot to comment that in Colosseum Pokémon maintain their small/big size in battle, while in Sw/Sh, they are all kinda up/downscaled to be about the same size. This is obviously a problem.
    - Yes, many animations in Colosseum are inherited from Stadium 2, so what? Sw/Sh could have used these animations too if they wanted, but didn't. I'm comparing the quality of the animations between these two games, not judging who made them.
    - Also, sorry for having some typos. I should have VO'd this video but didn't have a good mic at the time to do it. The one video I made before with the laptop mic sounded pretty bad, so I decided to go this route with this one until I saved up for a microphone.
In conclusion, it's just baffling to me that this comparison can even be made and that Colosseum can come out on top in even one of the points in question. This is not to say that Gamefreak are lazy as many people assume I am implying, just that through the years they have made poor decisions that have ended up putting them in a bad position were this is the best they can put out. And that is sad. I want Pokémon to be the best it can, because I have loved this franchise since I can remember. And this just ain't it.

I'm thinking that XD and Battle Revolution shortened the fainting animations because Colosseum's animations took a bit too long. Honestly, I kinda liked the longer animations? It made things more dramatic. Plus, there were some little details added when the fainted Pokémon was recalled, such as one of Nincada's legs twitching, or certain aquatic Pokémon going belly up upon fainting. That sort of thing!

I think one of Game Freak's poorest decisions is appealing to the fans. Which sounds backwards, but it's true. Fans wanted every Pokemon in every game, so GF gave them that. However with 900+Pokemon, over 1000 individual models+shinies, 4 or 5 animations PER model (people who want individual animations for every single attack so it looks more realistic are not educated enough to understand how game design works), not to mention tweaking movesets for every single game, and making sure all of this works in the new game engine every generation, is just tedious as all hell and they REALLY should've limited the Pokedex years ago because of it. The amount of time they spent trying to make every single Pokemon work could've been spent on graphics touch ups (not in battle, attack animations are stellar in SW/SH) or additions to storyline. And the obvious point, Game Freak wasn't given enough time. They are only allowed 3-4 years per game, and if the anime/TCG/merchandise has to be out by September and the games need more work, well, sucks for the games, they gotta release anyway.

    • @TheMorbidHobo
      @TheMorbidHobo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

@@kylecresswell0478 so they did limit the pokedex... and nothing was gained as a result. You can say the attack animations are good, but that's really only a couple of them for really specific moves like Cinderace's fireball thing-- it does not represent the majority of attack animations in swsh.
Really all they need for each mon is 6 animations: idle, getting hit, fainting, status move, physical move, special move. The dexit cut should have made this easily possible.
From what I understand, Creatures Inc actually make the models and animations, and GF actually do have access to a whole bunch of animations, they just don't use them when they really should be.

    • @chuiechuie
      @chuiechuie 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

I think an issue with this comparison between Colliseum and mainline is that it's not actually like-for-like. Yes it's 3D, but Collisseum was 3D from the ground up while mainline is the 2d game with 3d graphics.
Seen this way I feel the 3d sprites in sw/sh move the way they do their 2d counter parts would have- i.e. Tackle has that crappy shake followed by an "attack" animation.
While it may be a time and cost saving venture, my sense is that aesthetic continuity would have been a priority for the mainline game through its 2d roots.

And its not impossible. There's a wailord in the IoA that looks properly modeled. But if you compare it to a wailord you already have, you can see that gf purposely made wailord small

    • @babyjiren9676
      @babyjiren9676 4 ปีที่แล้ว +114

The scale is fcked because every stage except the dynamax stages are tiny. Notice how the pokemon are standing like two feet from one another. If you had a wailord in its accurate size it would be clipping every model and texture around it.
I don't even hate SwSh but this laziness and utter lack of pride in their own work is becoming too much.

Pokemon Battle Revolution wasn't legendary. I loved it, but the game felt pretty half-baked compared to Colosseum and Stadium. Plenty of the complaints given in here about Sword and Shield were the same complaints I had with Battle Revolution's animations (just compare the animation when a Pokemon hurts itself when it's confused between Stadium and Battle Revolution.)

It's interesting seeing that Mario, Zelda and, to a lesser extent, Fire Emblem all took big leaps forward in terms of how they tackle the design of their respective series; trying new and wild things that either do away with or turn established series staples on their heads. Then you have Pokemon, which seems to be very content to rest on previous success and deliver a very standard product in its series that doesn't seem to possess even an ounce of soul. This is the biggest media franchise in the world for gods sakes, there is zero excuse for this.

Honestly, this is why simply boycotting Pokémon alone won't work. It's a bit grim, but unless you're actively invested in other Nintendo franchises, they're the next available target to try to have our voices heard. This whole Pokémon controversy doesn't reflect well on Nintendo in general, but throwing in the threat of a loss of sales for other series is a way to gain attention. Nintendo may not produce Pokémon directly, but they do have a heavy influence on them.
_Hopefully_ it doesn't actually need to come to this, and Nintendo or Game Freak have already started something in motion, and we can hope to expect more out of Gen IX. Hopefully, they'll be able to use Snap 2 as a jumping point to bring their graphics up to snuff, they'll give more attention to the story and the long term playability, and some actual tender love and care, but I'm just running out of trust at this point. I've been a staunch Pokémon fan since it came to the US 22 years ago; I grew up hoping to be able to share Pokémon with my own kids and nieces and nephews, but Sword and Shield in particular were just disheartening.

SwSh trainer animations were just a slog, while Colosseum animations may have been locked to character models, they certainly let you know what kind of trainer you were up against.

Honestly I'm convinced that the greatest difference is that third-party developers *understand the weight of the Pokemon series.*
Every third-party (Genius Sonority, HAL/Pax Softnica, Tecmo Koei, etc.) that has every worked on a Pokemon game seems aware that Pokemon is the one of if not the most recognizable video game brands out there and put in both time and quality to live up to its high reputation.
While I get that previous GF directors fear they've lost inspiration or simply burnt themselves out, rather than making excuses or empty promises, they should at least look at previous spinoffs to remind themselves the Pokemon doesn't need to be built on linear thinking and that change is okay. Even though GF has proven its ridiculous stubbornness to support its game quality (with a mere 148 employees), The Pokemon Company became the biggest problem itself once it began to favor profits over everything else and nothing will seem to change unless otherwise.

*In Sw/Sh (and since Generation 6), Hitmontop has been shown STANDING UP, whereas Colosseum (and Stadium 2, and Battle Revolution) properly showed him balancing upside down on his head spike like the Sugimori art and older game sprites.
*In Colosseum (and both Stadiums, and PBR), Blastoise has a special "double water" animation for Hydro Pump that shows the water coming out of both of its shell cannons like it's supposed to. Since Generation 6, there's only been one stream of water coming from its mouth.
*In Colosseum, some birds were shown grounded, such as Skarmory. In Sw/Sh, almost all birds are shown flying, a leftover of Generation 6's "Sky Battle" mechanic, and in Skarmory's case, the flying animation is awkward.

Nowadays game companies just think it's okay to rush games before the intended deadline, but they need to learn that it's okay to delay a game. Doing so will give more time for the game to receive better quality. I would want the Diamond and Pearl remakes to take as much time as needed, not for it to be messed up because somebody thought it was okay just to put up a very short time frame before release.

There are times with modern Pokemon models that it looks as if someone is moving them around in MS Paint. They have so little reaction to something or all they're doing is bouncing around. A move like Tail Whip is just flip horizontal twice.
People want to compare these games to Colosseum.
I honestly think Black and White sprites had more expression.

I think the best thing Pokemon can do is outsource the production for the next game:
Start with Spike/Chunsoft (the developers for the Mystery Dungeon games) and have them create the story.
Next, have Creatures (the developers for Pokepark) create the world/region.
Afterwards, Genius Sonority (the developers for games like XD and Battle Revolution) can create the models and animations for the Pokemon.
Bandai Namco, the developers for the Switch version of Pokemon Snap, can worry about the skins for all of the Pokemon, characters, scenery, etc.
Finally, Game Freak only has to worry about the final touches. They can make the walking/following animations more realistic like in Let’s Go. They can implement whatever new battle mechanics they want. They can pretty do whatever they want to ensure that it’s a well rounded and fulfilling gameplay experience and nothing will have to take away from the game.
This way, not only do we get a unison game combining efforts from all different aspects of the franchise, but we also can finally have a game worthy of being a Switch title after seeing the difference between Sw/Sh and Pokemon’s sibling franchises under the Nintendo brand.

To be completely fair in regards to battle animations, all of the models/animations for Pokemon from generations 1 and 2 were ported into Colosseum/XD from Pokemon Stadium/Stadium 2. If anything, however, that just goes to show that there is no care put into Pokemon's final product anymore in mainline games, with only the spinoffs seemingly having any heart to them.

To me, sword/shield was just an overglorified 3ds game that had it's resolution stretched at an HD resolution. Coliseum is more colorful in its design philosophy in every way and it saddens me that gamefreak didn't bother to look back towards this gem when tasked with making a full-fledged console title.

Well as far as I've been able to research, it must have been about a year and a half, since Genius Sonority was founded in early 2002 and Colosseum was released in late 2003. They were an experienced team however, since many of them had previously worked on games like Dragon Quest.

The first official announcement from Nintendo was in E3 (june) of 2017, when they confirmed that after Ultra Sun/Moon, the next mainline Pokémon game was already in development, with Let's go Pikachu/Eevee being developed by a different, smaller team inside Gamefreak. So, at least two years of development, although probably longer, since Ultra Sun/Moon was more of a port from the 3ds than anything else.

Pokémon Colosseum is one of my most favourite Pokémon games of all time because it just looked cool. Funny enough, it was the first Pokémon game I played. I love the music, the silent protagonist, Miror B, the soundtrack and the Shadow Pokémon. I feel more invested and the places are greatly details in Pokémon Colosseum than Pokémon Sword, I feel like its Pokémon at its best. Though I don't think Pokémon Sword is the worst as it's okay enough as a Pokémon game, though I do think it could be better.

I think Pokemon has to accept the fact that their combat system revolves around what is essentially dogfighting, they’ve been trying to deny and censor this but it’s pretty obvious and they should make the animations to the level that colosseum brought

I would like for Genius Sonority to just go in and do this kind of job and do their own Pokemon game. Stuff that I loved from XD and Colosseum are the themes (EXCELLENT MUSIC WHICH HYPES THE BATTLES), battle mechanics, trade accessibility with GBA, entertaining and cool ass stories, just overall great ambients. My favorite Pokemon game ever is Colosseum, I wish they would've let you have an option to play the story as single battles but it's good that by the time they went with something different, which sometimes going different pays off well, in this case it did. And they are not short games btw, so you're going to have a nice experience if you give time to those two games. Nice video man, I like that you showed some Colosseum clips just to show that nothing compares with the old stuff.

What killed buying Sw/Sh for me was move erasure, by which I mean how many moves were just cut entirely. The other issues definitely added to it, but limiting certain movesets to very specific playstyles is the straw that broke the camel's back.

I have collected every single hand held pokemon game since Gen 1. I have come to fall in love with the mechanics of Gen 4 and all the pokemon up to Gen 5 (half of the roster is not bad). While I do not mind Gen 6 and 7 they are not really...good games with clunky mechanics and water downed ideas and pokemon. I love the Pokemon Stadium/Colosseum games for their expressive pokemon. There is no excuse for gen 8 being the way it be. I own a Switch and I refuse to pick up anymore Pokemon games until the developers actually gives a crap about their IP again

Just wanna say how underappreciated this video really is, it opened my mind as to how the game designers at game freak really operate and shows their lack of work ethic when it comes to bringing Pokémon to 3D. Really unfortunate how stuff like this goes through Gamefreak’s head and shows they’re only looking to continue to milk new games and remakes without trying to make a detailed and mesmerizing experience as was Colosseum and XD Gale of Darkness.

It irks me a little bit whenever people say it's "one of the biggest franchises ever." That's not a fair representation of the games. It is the BIGGEST franchise ever. Like, legitimately, this franchise has made more money than Mario, Marvel, Star Wars, etc. It is HUGE.
