  • Review of the KaiOS-powered Alcatel Go Flip Prepaid Phone.
    Find it here (unlocked): amzn.to/2A5IZ2E
    The T-Mobile version: amzn.to/2Lhdic7
    The Boost Mobile version: amzn.to/2uKDxgK
    Details:
The Alcatel GO FLIP™ is more than just a basic phone-it delivers the essential features to be productive in a durable compact flip phone design.
It also has a music player for your entertainment, and since it has a built in micro SD card slot, you can expand its memory. Other features include a Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a colored outer display and a 3.5mm headset jack.
The GO FLIP includes a Quad-Core processor, perfect for seamlessly transitioning to and from multiple applications. Looking for a charger won’t be part of your daily worries thanks to the long-lasting battery.
    OS:
KaiOS is a Linux-based mobile operating system that "merges the power of a smartphone with the affordability of a feature phone". It is forked from B2G (Boot to Gecko), an open source community-driven successor of Firefox OS which was discontinued by Mozilla in 2016.
Primary features of KaiOS is to bring support of 4G LTE E, GPS and Wi-Fi with HTML5-based apps and longer battery life onto non-touch devices with optimized user interface, less memory and energy consumption. A dedicated app marketplace called KaiStore enables users to download application. Some services come preloaded as HTML5 applications, including Twitter, Facebook and TH-cam. It is very light and is able to run on devices with just 256 MB of memory.
In June 2018, it was revealed that Google had invested US$22 million in the operating system

I recently purchased one of these flip phones becuz I've misplaced my Samsung smart phone. Before I had the Samsung I also had an iPhone (and previous to that I had a earlier Samsung smart phone). I LOVE this little flip phone! It takes me back to the time BEFORE smart phones when I had a LG Flip phone. Now after using smart phones for years I thought this was going to be a 'painful' adjustment. BUT IT ISN'T and so much so that I'm seriously considering leaving the smart phone OFF possibly forever!! Now, this is just a cheapo AT&T plastic $50 little flip phone but I swear I'm completely enjoying it! I know, hard to believe but it's true! Not to mention my bill is incredibly cheaper AND it works just as well as any of my smart phones! I do get a big laugh at myself whenever I try to use it as if it were a touch screen, I'm so used to because of the smart phones. It's pretty funny actually. And lastly, if I were to lose this phone or have it stolen it would hurt a whole lot less than losing one of my smart phones at $800-900 bucks a pop! I did watch a few vids on these flip phones and a few people said the camera function is lacking. Well it must of been their phone because believe it or not the quality of photos or video that I've tried with this little flip phone are really good, which I really was pleasantly surprised with! I'd recommend these to anyone, for an all-time use or just a back-up phone. Get one, you won't be disappointed!

You're right I don't text very much. In fact I HATE texting. And yes, it's tons slower than my other phones were, but I'd rather talk than text and everyone that knows me knows that too. I don't mind it at all. Besides, when I'm on my tablet it's the same, so I'm used to it. I'd rather type, but for the money and for as little as I'm on it, this little phone does the job!

It isn't the phone/hardware that let you down it was the absence of the app-store that got you. That is a OS issue or an issue with the seller restricting available apps. I know that you said that during the video but in the summary it ought to have been mentioned because the phone itself is not the problem.

Also, whenever I go on TH-cam with it and go into full screen mode, it goes into landscape mode, and I do in fact have access to an app store. Maybe they updated it, I guess. I purchased two open box models of this phone on eBay that were from AT&T. The KaiOS store works perfectly fine for my parents. I know AT&T can be very picky about how things will work on their network so it has to be one of their "branded" phones. Case in point, my Samsung Galaxy A71 5G unlocked from T-Mobile did not work on their VoLTE network and they said my phone was using their 3G tower for calls, thus sunsetting my device. Luckily, I had a spare A71 5G that happened to be a used and unlocked model from AT&T. Swapped the SIM card and it works perfectly fine on their VoLTE. Same phone, just slightly different software and IMEI provisioning can make all the difference.

I paid $20 at Walmart, and while I wouldn't say I have zero complaints, for what it cost and what is it works fine. Mine WILL change orientation when full screen is selected, so yours probably just needs a software update. My biggest gripe is the cursor likes to disappear while browsing. I have to hit search, then cancel to make it pop back up. All in all, $20 to buy and $30 a month for unlimited talk and text, sounds like a deal to me!

Got another one coming free for my wife because she has a Sony flip old tech. that works very well also. I've had this phone for a couple years and here is some of the BS that's happened:
-Music played from speaker even though headphones were plugged in.
-One night I woke up to the phone playing a podcast from the speaker.
-Outer screen cracked while in my pocket in the first two weeks of having the phone.
-Phone froze when receiving a call a few times, leaving me with no choice but to shut it down and restart.
-Sometimes the two buttons on the bottom left and right side of screen do not appear (usually these are for "back" and "options" or something similar).
-Frequently when the phone is closed and not being touched, the screens lights up (inside and outside) as if I had pressed a button.
-Sometimes the phone just shuts off with no warning.
-The keyboard backlight sometimes shuts off while keyboard is still in use.
-Frequently the phone can't keep up with my typing. I'll be typing a text but the letters won't appear for several seconds, and when they do it's all at once.
-Missed calls from people in my contacts frequently show up as coming from "main" instead of the actual name of the contact.

And you havd three chances to get it right. Miss all three, and you get asked for a PUK (which is a Personal Unlocking Key) . Miss your attempt TEN times;and the phond won't work at all. Cannot call out, text,or surf the internet. *AND* you have to get a new SIM card. (costs just $10.) Available at any walmart. Plus you get 90 days parts;one year labor. Doesn't mean you can wait 90 days, and if you have a problem with your phone during that time - walmart can help you. But after that? You're on your own. *YOU HAVE WITHIN 15 DAYS IN ORDER TO GET THE TWO-YEAR WARRANTY.* (that means that walmart can help you with your phone,if you have a problem with your alcatel phone.but you only get the same kind of phone. CANNOT get another type of phone, even if it's by tracfone...........) I'm not sure if walmart can allow you to do that. But make sure you want to get another type of phone,if you want a different type of phone. That's not a flip phone. A smartphone. Make sure you know what you're getting. Just about a month or so my old flip phone died. 4 years of happy usage there! Now I got one of these phones and it's a pain in the fanny! It did not come with a book telling you how to use it and what does what.
Texting is a double pain in the fanny. The buttons seem like they will wear out pretty quick. They fly past the letter you want, they don't display the letter at times either. I am a person that likes to text for hours and even write silly stories to cheer friends.
Also, where in the world does the current thread go that you're doing with a friend but you hit the "new" button to start a different thread of conversation with the same friend? Thread A appears to vanish forever while new thread B takes over.
This phone is a big step up and this person is still behind the 8 ball in understanding it. One thing is very obvious, it is not the type of flip phone used for the last 4 years and another flip phone for the 5 years before.
BUT I will keep plugging away on it, going to get the better of it sooner or later. 👍

Dude, this phone is for Senior citizens who can't deal with tech. Its perfect for them. Bought one for my Mom who is now unable to work a real smartphone without getting lost in menus . All they want to do is make and receive calls. ITS A FRIGGIN PHONE. It would have been a good review had you included anything about call quality. Instead, your trying to rate it against a real smartphone. Understand what age group a product is geared for.

Just bought their My Flip phone. I use Page Plus service. Can't beat cost per minute. Don't use a cell phone much. 2 problems. The ringer volume isn't loud enough, by any means. And yes, the ringer volume is turned up to 15, full blast. Also, having a heck of a time transferring contacts from a Samsung flip phone with no SIM card to this one. Bluetooth says it's transferring, but then nothing. Any constructive thoughts would be appreciated.

Speech to text? Would be a helpful feature to make generating a text easier by transcribing it rather than by pressing the individual keys that are needed instead. For poor spellers, this is a preferred capability in phones.

Hardware isn't that terrible for those phones under $20. (It's a flip-phone, not a smart phone.) The real issue is that the services that tie to this phone have no motivation to support anything with software. Just no development happening on KaiOS like there would be with Android. TracFone is one of the providers that didn't disable the wifi option and allows access to the KaiOS app store (still not anything significant there though - seems like cheesy games and stuff of that nature), but Tracfone itself has no apps on KaiOS for stuff like tracking minutes or whatever. (Trying to download the Tracfone app fails. Would have been nice if their cheapest phone was supported, but no.) Just have to text through and use a tiny bit of air time to get feedback on stuff like services tracking.
One of the neat little upsides is that it pulls in FM radio ok enough (noting super great, but it's not the worst either) if you have headphones to plug in. And the quality of the pics is alright too, provided there's enough light for it to work. (No integrated flash.) Not high-res, but passable considering what previous flip-phones were like.
Also has a place for a MicroSD. But I've not tried that or any of the media-player features. (Probably limited, but it does seem to be available. Again it's a $20 phone without the service plan on top.)

I have this on Tracfone. I make MAYBE 60 minutes of calls in 3 months, plans reasonable ($7.00 a month my plan) and its meant just really for calling. Its a 44 dollar phone but i paid $12.00 on ebay brand new. Love it. Its basic but yeah so what? I hate smart phones!

Before there were smart phones, there were lots of good dumb phones on the market. Now that most everyone has a smart phone, the only option for those of us who don't is this, and compared to dumb phones I used to own 10 years ago and more, it is lousy. Why doesn't someone resurrect one of the good dumb phone models of yesteryear?

I bought this phone for pretty much all the reasons he doesn't like it.
I don't want Andiod or iOS apps forcing "allow us to...... ransoms" in exchange for features.
    I don't wan't a phone for selfies, I don't want a phone that I'm staring down at as I cross the street.
I want a phone to make a call, and text.
This would've suited me even better if it had no net based communication whatsoever.

    • @Solitaire001

The reasons you mentioned are why I'm considering dropping my smartphone and returning to this phone. I like that this has just the apps that I need, although it would be nice if it had a notes function. Oh well, that's what a notepad, a pencil, and an eraser is for.
Plus, I like that it is not doing updates often. One of the frustrations with my smartphone is it mandates wi-fi for updates, something I don't have easy access to. I'd rather just use my phone's data plan, but some updates won't allow it.
Also, although it may sound strange, I find it faster to text with a numeric keypad over a keyboard. The keyboard has small keys that lead to errors that I often have to go back and correct. With the keypad, I get the right letter on the first try.

Does anyone know how to change the function so that the first letter of every word in a text is not a capital? Mine texts every word's first letter as a capital and it's completely frustrating. The telco I got it from couldn't work out how to change it and concluded it's part of the design.

Takes less than 5 minutes for you to forget it's a $40 phone instead of a full feature smart phone. Please keep your expectations within the scope of what you are reviewing. Complaining about the phone not having an Apps store is just STUPID. Most people that would buy this phone could care less about buying more Apps for the phone. Paul Tech has a much more REALISTIC review on the Alcatel SmartFlip. He actually has realistic expectations and doesn't whine about the lack of apps.

There are lots of older people who just want a simple phone with a real key pad to make ... GASP ... phone calls. CDMA devices will be non-functional on a lot of networks beginning in 2020, so people who just want a simple phone will have to migrate to 4G LTE devices such as this one. It's not marketed for people who want a fully functioning smartphone. It's designed as a simple device that can be used on 4G LTE networks by people who don't want a smartphone. Got it?
