    Be awesome if Alcatel could put out something similar to the Punkt phone. Very minimal, use the guts of a Go Flip 3. And make it indestructible. I find it odd nobody else has done this...

  • @MarkNF82
    @MarkNF82 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I only recently found your channel and website. I've been watching your reviews constantly ever since. Awesome job. Wish I found them sooner.
    My experience with this phone was very poor due to inconsistent performance. I don't know what KaiOS version mine had, but it felt like the phone was underpowered and nowhere as responsive as the one in this review. I assume I had a later version, or it was a region thing. Mine was purchased unlocked and used in Canada on Telus/Koodo.
    I would describe the responsiveness I had as "artificial". Loading an app from the Home Screen usually happened instantly, but would hang before it would respond to any key input. Making a call usually took 10-12 seconds between typing the numbers to actually dialling, while other times it would respond much quicker. This was particularly annoying since I only used the text and caller apps. Deleting text history and clearing memory was a daily chore and seemed to do little to improve things.
    After a month of using the Go Flip 3, I switched back to my current phone, the CoolPad Snap, which has similar hardware specs. Performance is still poor, but it is more consistent. Leaving the smartphone game I never expected today's "basic" phones to be worse than the ones of 15-20 years ago. Either that or I just keep finding ones that try to offer too much.
    I recently saw your reviews on the AGM M6 & M7. I'll definitely give one of those a try next.
    Thanks

    Well said agree 100% and I think we have it worst in North America with this crazy version/feature locking and lack of transparency. Hard to believe that it is just laziness ... I suppose there is some kickback scheme that fuels the scenario?

    • @JoseBriones
      @JoseBriones  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most likely. Carriers lock their devices to attract customers and in doing so provide a kickback to the manufacturers. We need an open system like those found outside of the US.

    I agree with the fragmentation issues, but Alcatel probably receives subsidies from each carrier so they don't have bloatware. Nokia on the other hand sells their devices unlocked, but include bloatware that Is probably subsidized by those software companies. Pure KaiOS with a good spec'd phone would be awesome

  • @LincolnKilby
    @LincolnKilby 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thank you for making this video, as I was comparing these two phones and wasn't sure which was the better choice. It's worth noting that, as far as I can tell, debug mode on the Alcatel doesn't let you sideload apps, whereas on the Nokia it does, at least certain ones.
    I've tried to figure out how bad the difference between 2.5.2 and 2.5.4 is. Could you clarify what exactly you lose out on besides WhatsApp voice calls? I'm not a WhatsApp user currently, and it seems like the Alcatel does still have some advantages:
    * Less awful camera
    * Bigger screen
    * Second screen
    * Less bloat
    * Clamshell design
    * Stays in predictive text mode...?
    I looked at the My Flip 2, but it appears to use Verizon service on Tracfone (and obviously does on Total Wireless), and I'm looking for something for T-Mobile service.

    • @justinstandifer604

    Jose, Thanks so much for this detailed review! Here's my question, my 97 year-old father needs a new phone. Flip is the only way to go. He needs simplicity and ease of use. Should I get him the Alcatel GO Flip 3 ? He doesn't use the phone very much, but would like internet. What do you mean by "fragmentation." Thanks for being there!

    • @nunyabiznis817
      @nunyabiznis817 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would look into the Nuu F4L before I would go with the GO Flip 3. Fragmentation simply means they have different version of the operating system on the market depending on which submodel you buy. SO just because you liked OK on one submodel you may actually hate it if you go with another submodel.

    Hi Jose! I have been binging your content on flip phones these days, and all the videos are very insightful. Thank you, and please keep going :)
    I live in Canada, and unlike in the US, there are very limited options available for flip phones (dumbphones). The most accessible phones are the Alcatel Go Flip 3 and the ZTE Cymbal 2. In your expert opinion, what would you recommend to someone like me who wants to buy a flip phone for nostalgia's sake and expect some functionality like 4g for Hotspot connection and WhatsApp for text and voice call (and linking it to your desktop version)?
    Ideally, I would have wanted to buy the Kyocera Dura XV, but C$300 seems to be a bit of a stretch for not a daily driver.
    Again, thank you for your content. Cheers!

    Could someone tell me if they were able to unlock their device with T-mobile, they have not been able to tell me how to do it over the phone, they always end up giving me instructions whose menu does not appear in settings, it is frustrating, I gave the device as a gift for an older adult to use and still hasn't can solve. When trying to enter a chip from another operator, it asks me for the unlock code which they do not provide me, they tell me that it is through the network, but that route of steps cannot be followed since it is surely for another device and not for the flip and there is no tutorial on the internet either, which they should have, I went to a couple of service centers and they don't help there, everything is done by phone, but by phone, they get desperate and end up hanging up on you.

    What are your thoughts about psudo dead os es of past like BB10, symbian ,windows 10 mobile etc. And your thought about finding the perfect of the features and simplicity in a phone .

    • @JoseBriones
      @JoseBriones  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a review of BB10 on the Z30 on my reviews playlist. I will be doing a Symbian review later this year with the 808. I think that there are some companies that are very close to prime digital minimalism features and balance, but we haven't gotten there yet. I think my favorite ones are Sunbeam F1 and the Light Phone 2 for fully minimal experiences, and for a more customized one, AGM devices or Schok Classic are great options for those who need extra features!

It may impact the storage memory and that's just sad but it should not make the phone slower, unless they are for some reason loading the bloatware all the time in the background but I doubt they are being so dumb, but it could be.

    Well the Go flip 3 has Kai Store, TH-cam and 2 other apps that are all bloatware to me. But what's most annoying to me is that the icons for these 4 bloatware apps are on the home screen and KaiOS does not allow you to remove those Icons fro the home screen. And it is just because of that the I regret my purchase of the Go Flip 3 completely. It also feels really cheap and the hinge seems very flimsy. I expect that to break within a year. I also find it to be rather slow. I have an LG Classic Flip and it's much faster with no bloatware, but it broke so I went with the Go Flip 3. I wish I would have just gone with the Nuu F4L and I probably will before too long as I just can;t stand this Go Flip 3.
