I'm wondering IF you could use it with the built-in web browser for my Audible books. Could anyone with a KaiOS phone try and play some multimedia?
Some early phones back in 2006 could easily have music transfered to them I dont think it would be out of reach now

I've seen an android flip phone before. Touch screen and all. I know there is still plenty of who would love to have this over a smart phone. I'm glad they are still being made.
There was a ZTE Android flip phone offered by one of the TracFone brands but it was kinda crap. There's also the Galaxy W2018 though that's Asia only, and Sharp has an arsenal of Android flip phones in Japan which their keypads double as a trackpad as a supplement to the touch screen.

That's a mate 30 that he talked about. P30 has normal level of Google services support as of now.

I've been kind of hopping all over You Tube reviews of this phone, and your review was entertaining and non-condescending towards this device. There _is_ a pretty sizeable market comprised of people who just do not want/need to be 'connected' 24/7. Personally, I prefer to do my media consumption (such as watching and commenting on videos) on my laptop, because I find even the largest smartphone screens to be just too small. I also do not engage in selfies/food pics/etc.. because I'd rather use my digital camera (yep!) when I go to events, or nature outings. I can afford a smartphone. I just don't want the hassles that come with it. And seeing how addictive they are is also a _major_ turnoff. I want my phone to be *primarily* a _phone,_ with just enough "smarts" (and none of the pre-loaded bloat) for simple use, and the durability and compact design to make it easy to carry around.
This flip fits the bill nearly to perfection!

I really need this phone for 2 reasons: my 85 years old grandmother won’t use a smartphone, and I would like to have a second phone (on another carrier) who works like a hotspot but I won’t need a second smartphone.
Jio Phone 1(brick style) and 2(Qwerty blackberry style) with Kai Os sell really well in India. They are the 1st choice for a lot of 1st time buyers from rural India because - 1. They can do almost everything a modern day smartphone can(4g Volte support , run Facebook, WhatsApp, TH-cam, play music, etc....), 2. Priced at $10(₹699) and $43(₹3000), they offer the best value for money.
Is it possible to get one unlocked?
Makes sense they're now rivaling Apple.for market share on India.
@@Brut4l unfortunately no. They are sold by Jio(a telecom company in India) with unlimited free voice calling + bundled 4G data. The cheapest recharge option is just $ 2 (₹149).
It was refreshing to see this video of a ” basic “ smartphone from an iPhone user. It may surprise a lot of people that there is still a great demand for these kinds of phones for people who only want to make and answer calls.
For the rest of us it may be a cheap backup phone in an emergency

i do want a secondary phone that can have my other SIM card for hotspot so i don't need to be stressed out on my primary phone losing more battery life and heating up

I was interested until you said that the phone comes with Google Assistant. I had this enabled on my Android device. A few months ago, my son said something about blueberries in a conversation about what he wanted for breakfast. From inside my pocket, my Android phone started telling me about the health benefits of blueberries. The phone was eavesdropping on my conversation from inside my pants pocket...not even powered on. At that exact moment, I decided that I want a flip phone.
The older model of this Alcatel flip phone is still available _without_ the added Google services, but with access to the Kaios store. It is the Alcatel Go Flip (same name, just without the "3"), also known as the Alcatel MyFlip (through Tracfone). If you want a simple flip phone, it is a good choice.
It doesn't even have real Google Assistant, it can't login to your account so it's just dumb speech-to-text. You either hit a button in your pocket or something was said in the conversation that it mistook for "hey Google". Happens, and you can disable it. Whether you trust Google with your info is another matter, but if you use Gmail you're already pwned.

@@AlejandroP1980s I don't know if the Go Flip V does, or not. I'm not familiar with that particular iteration. I would suggest going to Verizon and looking up the specs.
Does KaiOS support touch input at all? It would be cool to see a device that is around the same range of $60 and supports hotspot and has a full keyboard (like blackberry used to have).
There is actually a company called Jio in India that makes this types of phones (Jiophone 2). I've tried to get one but apparently only work with Jio simcard.

It is a nifty little phone if you need a phone and not a social media center I love it
I am one of the 7 hotspot people! I recently, early 2019, cancelled landline phone and dsl. I have an unlimited plan with Sprint and it give me 50GB of hotspot per month. I have found I can stream Amazon or You Tube to my TV, pay bills with my laptop over WiFi and have data left over. Horrible bandwidth though, only works for a single user. More than you think is doable with just a phone.
I KNEW there were some folks out there who would like that idea!

One important thing about this phone (at least at this time). While it supports mms, it does not support group texts at all. Trying to send one will send everyone an individual text, while someone sending you a group text will make it appear as if it just came from them. I found this out the hard way. 😂
THAT'S a bummer. I honestly didn't get a group text in to test that LOL.
I'd prefer that my texts go out individually as described above rather than as a group (and just include a brief note about everyone who is receiving the text). It saves everyone from getting replies just intended for me.
I would love to get some kind of retro kaios phone made into some of the Nokia's old s40 feature phone cases.
For example something like the 7250. But with bit better camera and obviously modern internals with lte connectivity.
That with much better battery life than what current Android or iOS devices can deliver, and this could be my next primary phone.
Nokia did release the 2720 again but with KaiOS, though you have to get one from Europe or Asia since HMD hasn't announced a US release for it.

@@SomeGadgetGuy when I'm abroad I like to listen to lacal FM radio. I wouldn't buy a phone without headphone jack or without FM radio. With my old LG G5 even the 80 Ohm Beyerdynamics sound nice. They are definitley not for poor people. 😊

I have an older model of this flip phone that can watch youtube, and browsing on internet is slow. What I like is I don't have to charge the battery often, unlike my Android phone.

T9 is predictive input. 12 physical button doesnt mean automatic T9. Its like saying: every touch screen has swipe keyboard-it has qwerty touch keyboard and swipe was added for ease of use. like T9 was for 12 physical buttons(so you didnt need to press 1 button several times to get to desired character)-havent seen reviewer to get it right.

I don't know if this phone actually uses T9, the setting just lists it as "Predictive Text" but it seems to act that way. I've found that it seems to start off with Predictive Text even when it is turned off in the settings.
I've found Predictive Text to be more of a disadvantage compared to regular input. Often, I have to corrections that slow me down. As an example, I tried to type "The" and I ended up with "Tige" (it went as follows: T, Ugh, Tige). While it did display options for choosing the correct word, for me it was faster to just skip Predictive Text.
If someone made unlocked KaiOS phone like the JioPhone 2 (with Blackberry like QWERTY keyboard) and sold it in Europe I'd actually buy it ASAP. I really hoped HMD would make one, but they seem to just be interested in making retro Nokias right now.
I'm having an issue with this phone not using the alert I chose for text messages. It's stuck on a very low beep sound and no matter what setting I change, the incoming text message notification stays the same. Any idea on how to change this
So satisfying to flip open a phone to answer a call though...admittedly neither of those things happens all that often in this era...

I bought Nokia 8110 4G because KaiOS intrigue me. I use it as a secondary phone/backup spare phone and to be honest, I really wanted to try to use it as my main phone so I won't get distracted by smartphones all the time.
When folks talk about getting stuff done, sometimes streamlining is the way to go.

I can't wait to give a try to the Nokia 800 tought with the same features than this Alcatel. I already have an smartphone for work and I think that a feature phone with maps, assistant and WhatsApp will cover my basics.
That said, if I find it frustrating, its the perfect phone to give away to my older parents. It's a win win xD
Don't expect real Google Assistant, it can't connect to your account so it's basically just dumb speech-to-text that can activate a couple local phone functions. Pretty pissed that it was advertised as having it! I get that TH-cam (which can login) and Maps, etc. are limited by the hardware, but all assistant has to do is pass a phrase to the mothership to, say, control my smart lights or set a calendar event. But no.

I got the phone and the app store wouldn't load up so I exchanged it for another smart flip and the app store still doesn't load up.

Nice big phone, but my old LG, that still works, probably has more features that I want than this phone.
My old one was an MP3 player, multi-media video player, had a flash that was bright enough to turn into a flashlight, and had an extended battery that lasted 3 days on heavy use. The essential days.
If enough people think the smaller flip is cool. Maybe the manufacturer s will consider a smarter version. Thanks Juan.

What is the likely hood of Google making an Android one "feature phone" could you imagine? Has an OG pixel grade camera but runs incredibly light software. I feel like that would be an amazing low-end device. If they could get it at the right price.

A good friend of mine and I were talking about him going to a dumbphone, having left social media. He was going to get one of those really sexy dumbphones that cost like $300. I sent him your video. I think there is something to be said for using Google Assistant to dictate texts.
That's the most beautiful flip phone in the world, too bad it's sold only in the United States. In Europe we have the Nokia 2720, but personally for the body and look I consider the Alcatel better than others.

this thing is SUPER GLITCHY AND there is NO GROUP TEXTING! i love it deeply in some ways, but it freezes all the time, and doesn't group text :( those are my complaints. email works well and i like that it has a very basic google maps.
I have a dumb dumb phone...decided against one with Kaios or anything such because I want an actual dumb phone. I feel with apps you’d fall into smart phone habits. I see the appeal but when does a dumb phone cross the line into smartphone?
You sure about that? I never develop any smart phone habits when I left Android for Windows Phone. I have every single essential apps that I need everyday, and that's all that matters.

No... Flip phones are a niche market. Let's not act like flip phones are making a comeback.
People I know are switching back. I went out to dinner and out of 5 people only one still used a smartphone. We have tablets for the rest of needs. Amazon will probably sell the 8" HD for $20 this Christmas. Imagine, $29 at best buy for the Alcatel and $20 for an HD tablet. Many people would be all set.
Well, actually, flip phones have never left, and there are many people getting quite vocal about their desire to "detox" from their purposefully-addictive, app-ladden smartphones. There are also many people who just never wanted to hop on the smartphone train to begin with....not to mention the so-called "emerging markets" in Asia and Africa.
So yes, there _is_ a market for these phones. One that is substantially larger than what would be defined as "niche". This is why Google has invested millions on Kaios.

They are a niche market, that serve those who prefer them, for those who work in specific conditions or cannot afford a smart phone. I doubt we'll see a reversal on a large scale.

Interesting. I had than LG K4 which ran on the snapdragon 210. It was running on Android 6 Marshmallow and was fairly capable. I feel that android Go is only a thing because android has gotten more and more bloated since android 8. 1gb ram phones were usable on android 6 and under, 4.4 KitKat was optimised specifically to run on low end phones, with as little as 512mb. Now we need at last 4gb ram to have a decent experience. The operating systems themselves take up far more space, meaning we need much higher storage capacity phones as well. Why does so called progress always equate to larger file sizes and more bloat? Because in reality, day to day use hasn't really changed that much.

Yes it’s ok as long as you remember that it’s a 4G feature phone not a flagship smartphone, you do not have to sign into Google or KiaOS to use the google features or KiaOS store, Google assistant works well and maps within limits, Email is ok I only use Hotmail, Facebook & WhatsApp I do not use so it may work with limits, cellular reception very good on 4G, battery life good but I switch to 2G if I only need calls and texts it extends battery life, camera is good for snap shot photos and we only get the Black one in UK yes it shows finger prints not a problem, it’s compact and no case/ screen protector needed and cheap enough if lost or damaged, and better than the 8110 matrix phone, let’s hope you can get the 2720 Flip in the US.

It barely works, with nearly 1-second:lag between swupes and taps.
Walmart has them for $19 prepaid and service card is $35 it's not too bad

I'm pretty sure that price is for the older Alcatel Go Flip and *not* for the newer Alcatel Go Flip 3. The "regular" Go Flip can still be updated to run Kaios 2.5, but does _not_ come with Goggle assistant/maps/You tube. Make sure you are getting the right version, if you want the new "smart" features.
With the text to speech there really is no need for t9

I bought this phone to replace my LG that went thru the washer and dryer... Sorry to say this phone is junk. Hard to navigate and people on the other end couldnt hear me..I ended up throwing it away and repurchasing the LG flip like the one I had before.

I absolutely second this .....recently got a AUD 75 for an iPhone SE on eBay that's pretty close to USD 40 ......excellent condition ....the owner just has it laid around and not do much hence grab a bargain for yourself description in the ad......heck one man's lost is another man's gain and fortunately I am the man that gain haha .......I think anyone with the right state of mind will pick the SE over this flip crap from 2002
