China Cracks Down on Wealthy Who Don’t Buy Homes, Next Target: Those Refusing to Have 3 Kids

  • China's economy is sluggish, and the real estate market continues to slump. Qingdao, Shandong's largest city and an important coastal center, has seen house prices fall back to 2016 levels. Local authorities are trying various measures to boost the market. Recently, a street office in Qingdao called for interviews with residents who have large bank deposits but are not buying houses. This move was mocked online.
A Chinese WeChat public account, "Three Young Men," published an article on June 10 titled "From Malicious Non-Buyers to Deliberate Non-Parents."
The article mentions that a Qingdao street office issued a task notice to promote home-buying policies. If residents with large bank deposits were found not buying houses, it was deemed a lack of awareness, warranting a reminder talk. This task was included in employee performance evaluations.

Needless to say these chinese supporters were college aged people from china here on a student visa, most likely with parents decently wealthy. They were asked on the spot why they would support the chinese government and their authoritarian style of ruling, and they basically answered "Because as long as we are prospering and getting wealthy, who cares?". This was 10 years ago so the chinese economy was still fine and the freedom crackdowns weren't that extreme. I would love to see those that got interviewed to answer again today.

Why buy a home that might not be built and even if it was it would collapse.
Why own a home that cant really be passed down to your children due to all homes are leased and on leased land.
Even if you had the home and it was built well is there enough stable work to even begin to pay off a mortgage.
Why buy a house when the price will drop the moment you buy it, leaving you unable to sell and in debt.
Now your being forced into buying a home. Imagine if the government came and forced you into paying a bad investment.
(At that point just take peoples money from the bank, just openly rob them)

China does not need more Chinese people. They need to get used to the number they have now (statistical 10 year old lie) or more realistically the marked drip in population. The oversupply of apartments cannot be mitigated by the CN gov't. These apartments are only concrete shells. The apartment buyers need to spend their own money to put in flooring, a kitchen, bathroom, ceiling, walls. Who has this money for renovation on top of the apartment purchase? This is a huge difference from a new Western apartment.

Thus, governmental policy is established to encourage wealth accumulation i.e. "growing chives", and then changed to shift those wealth to people in power, i.e. "cutting chives".
