Until the CCP allows equal access to Chinese media markets(Google, Facebook, X, Amazon and the like), there should be no Chinese apps in the U.S. or anywhere in the West. I find it ironic that Tic Tok is banned in China.
Actually, this won't help. It's a short term band aid at best. China's army of trolls is already highly active on Facebook, Instagram, whatsapp and every other possible media outlet that lends itself to manipulation.
The only thing that would help, long term - and would, in fact, put a definitive and decisive brake on China's and Russia's asymmetric war against the democratic countries of the world- is education - and I don't mean STEAM alone, I mean civic education, ethics, political science, economic and financial education, and, very important, and maybe sounding a bit strange, the ability to gather and to properly filter information. Finns did an experiment in this regard. They exposed a limited number of kids to that kind of education. Those kids turned out to become immune to any attempt of manipulation and false news injection.
That kind of education, however, is something politicians everywhere in the world, in Western style democracies as well as in dictatorships like China and Russia, will only reluctantly improve. That kind of education is the single biggest threat to how politics is practiced. Basically no electoral campaign anywhere in the world runs on facts, nowadays. Sure, there are some basic facts that politicians have to rely on, but essentially what they do is pick a few facts that are convenient to them and present them in a way that makes them look good while making the other side look bad, addressing the voters' emotions, often their most basic and negative emotions, rather than their brains. A properly educated population would no longer fall for such stupid manipulation maneuvers.
Which is why people should not expect politicians or regulators to do anything to improve things. Send your children to school, get them to get involved in extracurricular activities which teach them how to manage their money, how democracy works, how the legal system works, what habits get you into poverty and what habits make you rich, why corruption destroys communities, how one's misdeeds affect the entire community, and, very important, how infinitely connected and complicated the modern world is. People with this kind of understanding will be the best defense against any totalitarian threat, internal or external.

There is, actually, a point. While getting their PhD, they do useful research, and the research stays with the institution where they do it. They do get to take the knowledge they acquire with them, but they won't be able to build a business on proprietary research done during their PhD - or at least, they wouldn't, if China played by the rules. In as far as the universities hosting them do things right, the knowledge they take with them will be insufficient to fully transfer some important technology to China - PhD students are just cogs in a larger mechanism, usually headed by a professor or several professors, involving dozens of PhD students, each in charge of a tiny bit of a much larger project. Even if the freshly minted PhDs go back to China, the project they were part on continues in the US, and its outcome, if valuable, results in new technology being developed in the US. Something that wouldn't happen without the input of those Chinese PhDs.
The problem is how China approaches the entire process. It actively drives students that get to do studies abroad to gather information beyond their area of study, so as much as possible of what's being researched abroad can be reverse engineered and replicated in China, with complete disregard for intellectual property. Any NDA signed by a Chinese student is worth less than the paper it's written on. This, unfortunately, means that Western universities, not just US universities, need to limit their use of Chinese students if they want to protect their longer term academic interests.
Poverty isn't just about lack of money. Social and cultural poverty are actually worse, and much harder to fix.

I've been trying to raise the alarm about this for decades in the engineering and sciences fields. I also suspect other areas of studies are infiltrated. Economics is one discipline I still don't understand their ultimate reason for flooding other than it gets them into Western countries more easily as a low-resistance pathway.
A naive friend of one of my dear relatives related her enduring friendship with a Chinese researcher in her field of top level biomedical research. This seemed to me like she was being clearly targeted by CCP for her knowledge based on her recounting of the growth of her "friendship" with this man during her career. She has now aged out, is retired and in medical decline herself.
In the West we have been far too naive on this issue for too long. While certain Western politicians target immigrants from other nations for racist hatred only because it appeals to their blue collar voter base, CCP has been getting this free pass for too long to get their agents into our countries to steal our technology and intellectual property. They bribe their way into top university labs as international students and some eventually get into the private sector and penetrate military sectors.
Europe and Canada also need to awaken to this serious threat by the CCP. They aren't coming on a mission of friendship and goodwill. It's based on CCP leadership's desire to conquer us. They deploy strategies over decades and centuries NOT merely over short election cycles like Western politicians. Look at the deep infiltration of Fiji and other Oceanic nations, Africa, several Caribbean, South & Central American countries plus North America of course.

You will find that their visas are cancelled before embarcation in China. If Canada uses the same system as Australia, not the clunky US system, then you won't see incidences at airports. At visa pre-check-in the airlines are warned that a visa is cancelled and they are not to board a flagged individual.
The only difference you will know is a lot less loud Chinese around University campus. There are certainly a lot less in Australia, especially Melbourne Institute of Tech where they do world first Quantum Computing research.... That was banned in 2019

No not really, Australia took the lead with bans on students in STEM and Quantum Computing areas and cancelled a lot of visas quietly. We knew this was the case because many students noted their colleagues that never returned after a summer break in China. Chinese message boards in Australia we naming hundreds that couldn't return, this happened in China at visa check-in not at the airport in Australia. The Huawei 5G ban really pissed off the CCP even where the Foreign Affairs Office in China was accusing Australia of an "act of war".
It took the UK another 4 years and COVID to wriggle out of their Huawei5G mess, ask Boris... But done quietly knowing that we showed what China was prepared to retaliate with.

Australia has always used a selective departmental level quota system to regulate all sorts of visas to Australia....
