Fascism Returns in Italy: Giorgia Meloni Claims Victory, Allied with Right-Wing Parties

  • Italy's first far-right leader since Benito Mussolini, Giorgia Meloni, has declared victory. Her Brothers of Italy party is allied with Spain's far-right Vox party, Poland's ruling nationalist Law and Justice party and the Sweden Democrats party, which emerged out of its neo-Nazi movement. We look at "the return of fascism in Italy" with professor Ruth Ben-Ghiat, author of "Strongmen: Mussolini to the Present," who says that Meloni, a self-declared conservative, "really sees her party as carrying the heritage of fascism into today." Ben-Ghiat also describes why Meloni is part of a "transnational design" to create a far-right political culture across Europe.

Italy has been a corporate fascist state since way before and since WW2 as has the UK and France and... Transnational Italian capitalist corporatism was, literally at times and differing scales in the late-1940s to mid-1980s, propped up by the CIA to ensure that a popular far left coalition never gains power there (or anywhere). Rightwing American idiots haven't a clue that their ex-hero Lincoln (now derided as a lefty sellout!) founded the Republican party on the main premise of corporatism and 'gunboat diplomacy' and outsourced militarist-privatism within the 'American sphere' (the entire Americas). Most people forget that one of the first militia-then-military test-case precedential US colonies was Florida (for example). There has always been a 'liberal' party in the US whose supporters mostly were against US military or private-militia adventurism anywhere, and the opposite true as well (the horrors committed by US troops in the Philippine colonization/'liberation' divided American society strongly between those openly supporting genocidal colonialism and those fully against it, the only reason it wasn't such a riotous affair amongst white Americans like during the Vietnam War, was the fact that there was no military draft for the at-first-universally-popular Spanish-American War). Most people think that US violent and corrupt involvement with trying to control the entire Americas by ensuring 'friendly' (US corporate and military advantage) governments started in the late 1890s, but in fact it started in the late 1790s with American goals to finish off and go even further by stealthier-violent and/or corrupt means what the British started or contingency-desired: kicking the French and Spanish out of North and central America south of Canada and taking the areas or resources or establishing monopolistic-'client'-status for the US property class WASP male selves. Most of US moves for colonization were originally instigated by, or stealthily-strongly-supported, by rich power elites using 'private' militias and/or organized armed-colonists, most often totally illegally at the time according to US law, but with minimal pushback by the national or local 'conservative' US political majority or president in power at the time, only to be deemed illegal and a mistake by the next 'liberal' majority or president and/or the slow-acting courts, and things put on hold in a mostly 'having your cake and eating it too' fait-accompli, only for the next 'conservative' political majority or president to put their weight and official US policy of establishing US hegemony and/or sovereignty where 'American' (WASP) colonists already are, regardless of their relative numbers to intergenerational previous residents or indigenous people's. The US private-then-government overthrow and colonization of the democratic constitutional monarchy of Hawaii is a good more obvious early example of that, and a huge precedent for future off-continental-US colonial policies.

Exactly, the fight is not left versus right at this point. It is top versus bottom - the elite of society versus its great unwashed masses. People get stuck on bigotry because that is how fascist states arose in the past and enforced their power, but racism is considered abhorrent today. A fascist society would not be able to enforce its dictates through overt racism, nor can it commit mass genocide as those acts occurred in the context of war. People forget material analysis and live in the past. Fascism today will have the core elements of violent enforcement of the capitalist state, but it would not look the same as its predecessors as this is not the 1930s. It is likely this new government in Italy will follow the same line as the old ones - once you get in power, all ideals go out the window.

I don't like the choice of the re-election of Emanuel Macron in my country as I think it's mostly due to the control of media he has to influence the opinion, yet I have to recognize this is a democratic election. You may think that Meloni is too "far-right" or you can call her a fascist, yet she is the choice of the people. Measures to reduce taxes on low-income class, to encourage a higher birth rate or to reduce mass-immigration are the will of the italian people.

Viktor Orban and other far right leaders are also the product of a Democratic system. That's irrelevant. Using the doorway of a legitimate voting process, hiding or softening the rough edges of extremist views, then getting into office and dismantling Democratic norms has become the new stealth method to take over. No need for a military coup and all that violence. Meloni is a lifelong unapologetic Fascist who praised Mussolini. She's already threatening journalists with lawsuits who criticize her. Fascism as defined by the US congressional Librarian:
"Mussolini's Fascism was thus both a revival of revolutionary nationalism and an adaptation of revolutionary syndicalism. Fascist economic unions were used to mobilize the masses; and after the march on Rome in 1 922, the Fascist corporative state was organized along vertical lines by industries in a manner previously favored by syndicalist strike organizations."
And more: "Engels' Revolution and Counter-Revolution in Germany of 1851-52 blamed the failure of the German revolution on the timidity of the bourgeois liberals who led it. But some share of the blame might also be allotted to the extremism of the communist program, which frightened workers as well as bourgeois liberals and gave a pretext for repression to reactionaries. The displaced journeymen who provided the rank and file for the German upheavals felt threatened by intellectuals who sought to manipulate them with unfamiliar terminology. As was to be the case later-in Italy on the eve of Mussolini and Germany on the eve of Hitler-extremism on the Left played a role in preparing the way for reaction on the Right"-James H Billington, 13th Librarian of Congress

Professor Ben-Giath is actually WRONG when quoting one of the Brothers of Italy politician, Ignazio La Russa saying that 'We [the Italian people] are all heirs of the Duce', she is wittingly or unwittingly misinterpreting what he meant.
First of all, she quoted only a segment of what he said and not the whole thing.
If you actually listen to what he says in its entirety, La Russa is simply making the point (in response to some accusatory remark made about his party, so everything is in context) that the Italian people are heirs of the Duce in the sense that we [the italian people] have heredited a country that has had as part of its past the fascist era and the Duce. (Just as the Italian people are heirs of other historical figures.)
And with that he is not suggesting that fascism is therefore part of the make-up of the Italian people or the character of the Italian nation.. as instead professor Ben-giath implicitly and FALSELY is making it out to be the case about his statement.

It is of course both. However I subscribe to a leaning in the scale - meaning I lean towards the "person produces the times" side. The zeitgeist of The People can go un heard for decades...longer...until a person comes along. One of those persons, we need more, is amongst us...her name is Giorgia. Years ago many countries gave up the model of corporate 'sharing' in that if you by luck or hard work or whatever, worked for a company that became rich, these riches would be shared by all in that company.
    Instead...
$ were doled out to the few (the CEO's etc) and we ended up with oligarchs who then became 'untouchables' creating laws and influencing trends that made them and them alone, even richer.
Did they deserve this? Nope, definitely not..
But we never allowed to create corporate rules or laws so this would not (continue to) happen.
What happened with the rule of thumb that a CEO should make 4 to 6 times what the average worker in that company made? When that number became 4000 to 6000 times, the downhill slide into elitism began and the rest of us were doomed.
When we looked away when monarchies drained public resources as being a 'birthright' of theirs, we were doomed.
When we created rock stars out of mere political servants of the people like presidents and senators, we were doomed
Be prepared to be worker ants to queens guarded by enforcement armies because unless we awaken to these truths of the past and present, THAT is the future for 99.99% of us

Just because she may have spoken favorable about Mussolini as a teenager (I spoke favorably of Lenin in my youth). Also, from a more personal perspective, her father abandoned her and her mother when she was in her pre-teens, and he was a keen Communist. So there's a lot of deeply personal material informing her teenage choices. That said, the people who will form her government - nit to mention her personal policies - are centrist (and in some cases, they may even qualify as social democratic). As for her anti-immigration stance, have you any idea what Europe has been experiencing in the past decade? Next time, interview someone who speaks Italian fluently and knows Italy before making such claims. And I would add that I did not vote for Meloni.

To only allow Christian immigrants; with a litmus test of their beliefs is not only FAR RIGHT, but also FASCIST. To question if it is legal for the Italian Navy to fire upon small crafts of migrants (often inflatable rafts) and to propose a Naval Blockade of Africa; that is FAR RIGHT and EXTREMIST as well.

National revolutionaries vs social revolutionaries...unless you create a National socialism against international socialism/Bolshevism.

My maternal grandfather immigrated to the USA from Italy at age 16. Returned to italy at age 24 to fight in the Italian Army during WW1. Finally, he immigrated back to the USA when Mussolini came to power in 1924, never to return to Italy.
