Thanks so much for explaining details on how to color grade with HLG3 for a beginner! I had to do a lot of searching to finally find something that made sense to me :)
It would have been great if you'd shown the scopes. Without them it's quite hard to gauge where exactly your exposure falls objectively and thus makes it harder to immitate and learn from.
What is the point of shooting in a bt.2020 format if it is always converted to rec.709? Many screens support P3, which is close to bt.2020, but all the videos end up in Rec.709.
Good question, I’ve been trying to figure this out to. It’s my understanding that these formats provide your footage with the greatest flexibility, before it becomes 709. It’s the same as shooting RAW vs JPEG. It’s like working with vanilla icecream as a base: you can turn vanilla into any flavor you want by adding to it. But if you start with chocolate or strawberry, you have less flexibility. These flat video profiles literally give you more possibilities as they have greater dynamic range, and the colors are more flexible to work with. Even though the footage will end up being 709, we have more power over how exactly it looks, because 709 is just less flexible.
Ahhh here we go ! Again I was researching to make a video and yours popped up with everything already, hahahaha What I haven't found out yet was exactly what someone else asked. How to do the same in Premiere... I'm using Da Vinci also now, but some stuff I still do in Premiere :p Awesome video once more my friend !!
Why you do the primaries before the transform and then the rest of the color grade after that node instead of using the transform node as the last and work inside the SLog Color Space to take advantage of the dynamic range and the color gamut?
Thank you for your video! Could you please make another video about HDR output for HLG3 footage, as most mobile devises and new TVs are HDR capable now?
