One thing I always do on consumer drone footage, is taking of the sharp edges with „edge detect“ and put out the alpha to a gauss blur. Works great to match with cinema cameras. Secondary masks or depth map can also help to make the shot look more interesting
Even better, adjusting sharpness and noise reduction on the mini 3 pro in camera to -2. The image doesn't need any filtering then anymore and matches perfectly well with professional cameras then.
Can you provide some steps on how this is accomplished? I'm in color page and add a node with edge detect. The colors become inverted to show the edges. Then I add a second node with gauss blur and connect the nodes with alpha. But I'm not getting the intended effect.
@@RoyGregorio I use the "Edge Detect" on a parallel node. Then I feed the video out signal of the node to the alpha of a node further back in the node tree. I set a strong blur in that node to see the effect. Then adjust the edge detect and blur, depending on the footage. With this method, you only blur the edges, not the whole image.
One important thing to mention: To get a less digital and crunchy looking image on the Mini 3 Pro, just adjust sharpness and noise reduction both to -2. The image will also look much cleaner in low light situations then.

Great tips! I’d love to see you do a video on using CST on D-LOG-M footage. This is key because with the Mavic 3 Pro, it’s the only Log-type color space that’s consistent across the 3 cameras. (The 7x zoom is the weak link, the other 2 have D-Log). Apparently DJI will not publish the details of the ‘M’ color space… so it’s a mystery to solve
@@DarrenMostyn Switched to Color Managed after watching your videos on that, where previously was using a combo of CST and LUTs on the timeline - I shoot with 3 camera types pretty regularly, sometimes more. After reading some forums I tried out HLG on my Log-M footage and really do prefer it to the LUT. I flagged the Log-M footage as Rec. 2020 HLG ARIB STD-B67 and love the result but am not sure that's the correct choice.
@@ianjmcdonnell I am going to try your settings and see if I like them. Seems better to me to at least pick something in cst than to work in the limited Rec 709 space. Thanks for posting!
Hi Darren, I really appreciate your professionalism and the way you explain everything..however I just started to learn Da Vinci and I really struggle to understand some steps...do you mind tell me from which of your videos I should start to be able to learn clearly all in the right way? Thanks!!
What about working with the newer DJI format D-Log M, which DaVinci can't detect correctly, so far. What is the best work around? I'm looking for a complete answer: App Settings>General for Mac users, Project Settings>Color Management, And then your Color tools approach. I can't find any video that is this specific for users like me. Thanks in advance, super helpful clear videos!
I think D-Log M is just another flavour a'la D-Cinelike and by far not a real Log format - and should be treated as Rec709. Or try a CST with @shayrealestatephotography's advice: Input color space RED> DRAGONcolor/REDgamma3. It actually works really well!
@@Jaconiel Yeah DR labels it as Rec709 and DJI seems like they will never release any spec for it. So I now shoot in HLG and manually change input format in DR as *HLG (Scene)* instead of what DR id's it as just HLG.
I could have sworn that H.264 couldn't be 10-bit but clearly I got that wrong. I THOUGHT my Mini 3 Pro only recorded 10-bit in H.265 , but I see you've used the same drone and it's H,264. Very strange! I'll check that later. :) I have lots of trouble grading drone footage, and I'm working on a clip right now as I watch this. No matter what I try, the colours never look right, particularly the greens. I know it's not log so I use HDR or the standard colour wheels. I don't have a fancy node setup like this, but I'll give it a go and see if it helps. Thanks Darren.
@@DarrenMostyn Yep I know I can choose, and I always chose H.265 because I thought that was the only way to get 10-bit. I've just done some testing with it though and can see I was wrong. I'm amazed! I'll use H.264 in future to make editing a little faster. Thanks again.

Great tutorial! Thank you
You're very welcome!
Great video! I never knew about color stabilizer tool. Thats something I'll be using in the future for sure.
thanks Erik
There is not a cst setting for d log M. Use a Lut from dji or build from rec709.
@@DarrenMostyn thanks. Now I believe it after hearing it from you. Keep up the great work!
@@ianjmcdonnell if you prefer it it is perfectly acceptable to do that! I use array cat on footage sometimes that is not arri
@@ianjmcdonnell I am going to try your settings and see if I like them. Seems better to me to at least pick something in cst than to work in the limited Rec 709 space. Thanks for posting!
Very cool video!
was fun to make!
What input colour space and gamma would you suggest for D-Log M footage in DaVinci YRGB workflow?
Try the LUT vs D-LOG CST and see which is best for you. I had no D-LogM to try.
Thank you so much for this tutorial
You are so welcome!
Great! Thanx 🙂
Hi Darren, I really appreciate your professionalism and the way you explain everything..however I just started to learn Da Vinci and I really struggle to understand some steps...do you mind tell me from which of your videos I should start to be able to learn clearly all in the right way? Thanks!!
Very handy. Thank you Sir!
Glad it was helpful!
What about working with the newer DJI format D-Log M, which DaVinci can't detect correctly, so far. What is the best work around? I'm looking for a complete answer:
App Settings>General for Mac users,
Project Settings>Color Management,
And then your Color tools approach.
@@Jaconiel Red Wide Gamut RGB is even better for the input
Follow these steps and work in DaVinvci Wide Gamut as timeline setting. Should help if you are using the HDR tools particularly. Hope that helps.
@@DarrenMostyn I appreciate that Darren, thank you. I'm working on that now and I'll see how it goes. Thanks for the help.
H264 is not restricted to 8 bit. it can be higher. Also mini pro 3 records H264 OR H265. You can choose.
@@DarrenMostyn Yep I know I can choose, and I always chose H.265 because I thought that was the only way to get 10-bit. I've just done some testing with it though and can see I was wrong. I'm amazed! I'll use H.264 in future to make editing a little faster. Thanks again.
both are bad for editing TBH! Use prores if you can.
