    I wasn't a highly recruited player out of high school. So I don't want you to think you need to be a big name player to be recruited for college golf. You need to have a SOLID short game, decent ball striking, and a WORK ETHIC of a maniac. Having a good instructor is HUGE in helping you reach your goals of playing college golf. Invest in a high end instructor or let me help you with your golf swing and get you recruited for college golf. Being that I've been through the process I'm confident I can help you get recruited. College golf was an awesome experience for me and has shaped me into the person I am today. I'm excited to help you take on that same path. Leave a comment below if you have any questions

    I’m coming from a women’s college golf perspective but I think this applies to men and women too: it really doesn’t matter what you shoot freshman and sophomore year if you aren’t a phenom. If you play well your junior and senior years, so long as you’re showing improvement from the early years you will have some interest from college coaches.
    I didn’t start playing golf until my sophomore year of high school and I started off shooting in the 100s! And I was over the moon when I broke 95! But I worked very hard and got my scores down to the low 70s by my early senior year and signed to a D1 school in California in the February signing period.
    If you don’t feel super confident in your scores, just show a coach that you have the ability and the drive to improve exponentially while you’re playing for them. A lot of the times a good coach will be willing to take a chance on you. They might not offer as much scholarship money as you would hope but they will give you the chance to play for their team and/or bump your scholarship up as the years go by.

    • @LukeKwonGolf
      @LukeKwonGolf  6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      This.
      And emphasis on the fact that you don't have to be a phenom. I was no where near a phenom, but I sent out some emails and some coaches were willing to take a chance on me. Show them you're willing to put in a ton of work and your desire to get as good as you can possibly be and you'll get a chance. That's all you need. What coach wouldn't want a kid that genuinely wants to be a high level player and is willing to put in the extra work?
      I will say though... I think for womens golf, since there's less girls in junior golf in comparison to the guys it's easier for girls to sign to pretty big D1 schools. But that's kind of besides the point lol

    • @breajones4012
      @breajones4012 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Luke Kwon Golf Yeah I agree! Just put in the work and prove that you’re dedicated to getting better and coaches will notice that. Good programs with great coaching are willing to take risks on players that show improvement.
      Yeah I agree about the men’s vs. women’s thing. Girl’s golf scholarships are much easier to get because the competition isn’t quite as stiff. That and the level you have to achieve to sign to a top tier D1 school isn’t nearly as high as it is for men. Where most high school aged guys have to shoot in the high 60s to guarantee a spot at a school in the top 50 ranking, girls can average 71 and basically go wherever they want.

    Couple of things I left out in this video that I keep getting alot of emails/DM's about:
    1. *Try to play in AJGA(dot)org tournaments AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE.* These are going to be the benchmark for what college coaches will use for tournament golf performance. If you're outside the US, try to play in some tournaments that will get you WAGR (World amateur golf ranking) points. It's a bit harder if you're outside the country but it can definitely be done.
    2. *When you contact the coaches,* simply tell him/her that you're interested in playing for them and putting in the work to make the traveling 5. Give him/her your career resume with the tournaments and scores you've posted at those tournaments. Don't leave out the bad scores, put them all in there. Coaches want to know how good your good is but also how bad your bad is. Give him a schedule for future tournaments you're playing in so he/she can come watch if he/she's interested.
    3. I don't recommend filling out the questionnaires that are on the websites. If you'd like, you can search "ping american college golf guide" in google and it should be the first search result that comes up. That resource costs I think $50 but *it will give you the email addresses for all college coaches in the nation.* I personally didn't use that when I was a junior golfer but it sounds useful and I know others who did use it.
    4. If you are outside the US trying to play college golf in the US, I’m not really the best guy to ask what to do. I personally didnt have to go that route and don’t know exactly what the process would be for that. But if I were to guess I would say to find the big amateur/junior events that you can play in your country and get your WAGR or World Amateur Golf Ranking up so coaches will notice you 👍

      Hey Luke great video would really like to get in touch with you and talk to you about getting your advice because I really,want to be a collage athlete especially in golf and right now I am far behind the curve because I am barely starting my junior year but I’m right know that I could be shooting the the lower 80’s and I have only been playing for 3 months I am an ex football player and have a great work ethic this summer I was putting about 7 hr day at the golf course and would really need your help because all in all I want to help my family how because I know they would pay for me to further my education up I really would love to have paid at least a little bit more me thank you for the advice you gave out on this video and would love get in touch with you

    • @LukeKwonGolf
      @LukeKwonGolf  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Christian! I can tell you really have the drive to go put in the work, keep putting in the work but as you said, you don't have as much time. You're a bit behind the 8 ball and you need to be able to use the little time you have as efficiently as possible. I strongly suggest investing in a top 100 instructor or use my swing program to help you get a sense of direction because you don't have much time to experiment and figure things out on your own. My program will cut the learning curve and help you get better in a much faster pace

    • @christiandavid7734
      @christiandavid7734 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Thank you for you time in reading my comment and helping my by giving me your best opinion

    Especially if you are not from the US, you might want to contact your local and/or national golf association to see if they have a junior and/or amateur golf program. If you can get on to the national team for your country, that can get you into some international events where you can get noticed. There are quite a few events where the national golf association in each country has to come up with a team of 3-4 (or more) players.
    Making a trip to the US to play some AGJA events would also be a good idea if that is manageable.

    I can relate to the point when you said you get more and more comfortable to a score when you have shot it because I struggled to break par and often shot par or 1 or 2 over and when I played my first -1 I realised I can do it and two days later I did it again and I just felt really really good

There are definitely a good number of international golfers that get recruited to play in the US, so don't think you can't get there. Your best bet is to start looking at different college athletics websites and contacting coaches with your past results and future tournaments and show that you have interest in playing for them. Hey luke. This is kind of a complex question so I understand if you dont know how to answer it. I want to start reaching out to coaches soon and I'm a sophomore by the way. But last year my scoring was awful because I had a back injury freshman year from a hit in football. I kind of had to relearn my swing and I've been going to the range alot lately and high school golf season is quickly approaching. In 8th grade prior to the injury I felt like I could play college golf and last year I wasnt sure. But recently at the range I've been seeing big improvements and I'm starting to feel my swing come back again. Do you have any advice on how to overcome an injury and come back stronger? Ok I am going to have to disagree w a few things ur saying. First of all you don't need to be shooting 75 or lower in ur freshman year. I am playing division 1 next year and I was shooting 90s in freshman year. If you don't shoot those low scores when you are younger don't let that stop you from achieving your goal. Also don't stress if you don't get recruited in the early signing period becauase you have 5 more months to get signed. But hard work is definetly needed if u want to be a college golfer.

    Hay man. I'm from Spain. I've started around 3 years playing golf seriously and around a year ago i started working really hard. Im 6 handicap and this last months ive been shooting around +1+3 so i think i could get to 3 or 4 relatively easy. What should i do to go to college if im not from the US?

    Man did I mess up, I'm a senior now shooting right around par sometimes under but I haven't talked to any coaches and haven't played in any tournaments. I know a lot of kids that play in tournaments but I'm the kind of kid that always thinks I'm not good enough to win so I shouldn't go. My mindset is way different than that now and I wish it was earlier. Pretty sure it's too late haha

    Do coaches look at how many tournaments? like what if I can shoot really good scores but haven't played in almost any tournaments?

    • @LukeKwonGolf
      @LukeKwonGolf  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope! Good golf takes care of everything man. But that being said its very rare to see someone play only a couple tournaments and have really good performances. There are nerves that come with tournament golf and you learn how to deal with them by playing in more tournaments and gaining experience. But to answer your question, no coaches dont specifically care about the number of tournaments you play.

    I know im pretty late on this upload and i hope you reply. to me your someone that's gonee through the process and has great advice so I have some questions that I dont really have a answer to. So i am in my 3rd semester of my sophomore year and im just starting to write to coaches. During my freshman year i had a couple 72 -78 worst rounds as 83-85 during the summer. During the postseason for my school i got DQ from sectionals and i played an exceptional round. I'm gonna talk about it and say what I learned from it and i wonder if thats a good idea so during the summer going into my sophmore year I had 2-3 72's but a lot of 80's. During the postseason of high school i won my regional with a 72 and came in 3 with a 74 for sectioanls and lost by 2 to the kid who won my state tournament for the past two years. Should i reference how i almost beat the kid but caught a bad break or does that look bad? And finally I am presently getting ready to grind the summer into my junior year and i was wondering if shoot a lot of 72's if thats good enough for D1. I am currently ranked 14 in my state and i have not even played to my full potential. If get my handicap to scratch for my junior year would that be good enough? I really dont know im doing this all by myself. Thanks for reading this if you had the time. I appreciate it.

      Hey Damon I’m in the same boat you are in dude. I’m a freshman shooting high 70’s to low 80’s. Last year I shot about how you did. I’m also very small around 5’ 2”. If I have any advice I would tell you is that once you hit that low 80s mark your score will be stuck there for a little while. It was very frustrating for me to not break 80 because I knew I was better than that so just have patients because as you start to hit your growth spurt and and get better your swing will change and it might seem like your going backwards but your not. Keep grinding you’ll make it!

      Caiden B vlogs good question! Honestly not really a whole lot. Golf is a very specific movement and I’ve never believed anyone thats said that doing this or that off the course makes you better. But I will say that building explosive muscle fibers by doing squats, deadlifts, power cleans, box jumps will help. (Not the BS “golf workouts”). Also practicing meditation will help you get into the moment easier

When you play long enough, you’ll realize that the players you think are good arent doing anything spectacular. You can do the same thing 👊

    Given my family situation, it is very difficult for me to play in tournaments, especially those that are far away (and generally the ones that are far away are the ones that college coaches care about.) Gotcha. Okay so you guys up north do have a little harder time because your winters are so long and i feel like your high school golf programs only run for either fall or the spring. But college coaches dont really care that much for high school events anyways, its just less tournament experience you get throughout the year. Go to AJGA.org and check out what tournaments are near you. I think there may be some in NY. Idk if thats considered too far for you, if it is, search for your state junior tour. Might be something like MJGT (Massachusetts junior golf tour) or something. The ajga tournaments are the tournaments that coaches really look at, so if you can find a way to play in those that are nearby, that’ll be huge. Even if its two or three a summer thats okay. Also try to qualify for the junior am/us amateur as well on usga.org. Let me know if you have any questions dude!
