    The "rip off" bearing companies may not appreciate this video but I LOVED IT! Thank you greatly for taking the time to do this excellent test!

    By watching your testing base results; I have successfully used much less costly reels to equal your results or surpass them. I did this by using rods more closely matched to specific lure weights. The difference gained upgrading bearing and spools on reels already using good components only increases performance slightly. However, using upgrades on budget reels ups performance significantly. By using different brands of line and limiting the amount of line used increased casting distance. Using longer rods also increase casting distance as well. Granted; you could certainly refine more costly reels and rods doing the same things. However, the increases would likely be less because the most refine reels already are at the fringe of maximum performance. Budget reels are less costly but, adding the right combinations of components makes a big difference. Thank you for making videos about fishing reels, rods, and tackle more interesting and helpful.

      You hit it on the head with not using too much line. Unless the spool is ultra shallow, filling it all the way hurts casting distance with small lures significantly and causes more backlashes.

    Given that we didn't see an extraordinary increase of distance, this is where i plug in what I always say on my videos when it comes to bearing upgrades...and that is that most bearing upgrades helps you cast lighter lures easier by allowing you to cast more accurate and likely less power. Unless your stock bearings are total junk, which is not the case with this nice Shimano reel!

      Yeah JDM Shimano stock bearings cant be improved on after doing several tests vs even expensive hybrid ceramics. Thats why they are so expensive just to replace

    Another excellent review. I agree the Shimano JDM reels are that good. I placed micro bfs bearings in my Daiwa Fuego CT purchased a shallow spool from Ali Express and the difference was incredible. The Fuego is a different reel with the upgrade. I also did this with my Fishband PW 100 and the same. The cheaper reels improve much more.

    Any chance you can do a spreadsheet? Throw all shimano reels on it. Match it up with the same rod, same plug, same line and post results! Would be awesome. It seems you have most the data, maybe just compile it!

    well, another way to lower the weight of spool is by changing spool bearing to full ceramic bearing..its way much lighter than hybrid micro bearing.

  • @johnduncan933
    @johnduncan933 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Please bear in mind that the lower the mass of the lure or larger cross-sectional area, the greater will be the drag effect produced by the air in flight which will reduce the distance slightly. The advantage of the micro bearings is that they allow lighter lures to be cast accurately and snappily over relatively short distances with less effort.

    I put the hedgehog studios air bfs bearings in my abu ltx bf8 and honestly i was not that impressed given the cost of those bearings. Not much of a difference in distance. A little smoother casting, however the hedgehog studio bearings were fairly quiet compared to other brands ive used. Great vids as always!! Thanks

    A micro bearing might have less mass but the smaller ball will need to spin faster, possibly negating the potential advantage.

    in some forums, I heard bad reviews about hedgehog air bfs bearings that they for some unknown reasons stop performing and sound increases significantly so do any of you guys use them for longer period of time and can share the experience with them?

  • @jediknightameoba
    @jediknightameoba 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I am curious why you wouldn't run each bearing through a sonic cleaner, or something, then lube them a bit with good oil and seat them in. Bearings have to be broken in a lot of times after you get them.

    What is the sence in comparing micro ball bearing with stock bearings of different size (as seen in 2:20 for example) for they are not interchangeable?

      it was to illustrate the difference in ball size

    • @peterschafer5642
      @peterschafer5642 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I understand. But if you show ball bearings with a significantly larger diameter, then of course the balls are also significantly larger. So it only makes sense to compare ball bearings with an identical outer diameter. Apart from that: I like to watch your videos. Keep it up!

    hedgehog studio's AIR BFS bearings have some problems. I first heard this from one dude who repair's reels but still ordered them as i needed new pair fast. They're good brand new but after half year they just start make more noise and performance decreases. I think those micro balls can't handle the stress and something happens, maybe they make groves or smth idk. Maybe they're fine for really light stuff like trout spoons and short casts but if u try to bomb cast stuff from 4 to 10 grams i don't recommend them because they will die fast, even if u regularly put a tiny drop of very light oil and clean them they still will die fast.

    Ive never been able to get much increase in performance in my reels with aftermarket bearings. I even replaced them in my slx dc and it didnt do much except make a lot more noise. After thinking about this I dont see how aftermarket bearings help much if you are using brakes or any tension on the spool theres devices slowing down the spool so having better bearings they are still being hindered by the brakes.

    • @IlliniDog01
      @IlliniDog01 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They really only help with extremely light lures where they help with the initial startup ease. Gain will be at most 2-3%. Once the balls get rolling there really isn't much difference in quality bearings so long as the bearings are clean and have good oil in them or are running dry.

    • @aarondavis8224
      @aarondavis8224 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@IlliniDog01 Maybe this is why I havent noticed it. Anything 1/4 oz or under I throw on spinning equipment. Maybe when BFS equipment becomes better priced ill try a baitcaster I just cant see myself paying $600 for a combo to throw light lures when my $100 spinning combo will sling them pretty far

    • @mmmbass6068
      @mmmbass6068 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Like he said in the vid - it’s the reduced spool weight (and hence reduced inertia) where the performance gains are to be had. I just did this to a Revo X (aftermarket BFS spool and hybrid ceramic bearings) and the performance leap was phenomenal.

    • @aarondavis8224
      @aarondavis8224 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mmmbass6068 like he showed us in the vid this doesn't always give performance gains or very minimal gains. 1.5 extra feet on your cast isn't very impressive.

    • @mmmbass6068
      @mmmbass6068 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Aaron Davis the bearings seem to give minimal games. But if you can find a spool that is substantially lighter than the stock spool, you will have big gains. That is my experience with my Revo X, and I’m very impressed.
