  • We got some hands-on time with the Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. Each has Google's new, custom-designed system on a chip, called Tensor. The long and the short of it is simple: Google's actually trying to make a real flagship phone this year. Will it be enough?

They can’t, it’s just too late to figure, 10~15 years later, that they themselves could’ve been the Apple for Android, now they have extremely capable and compelling competition with better prices, value and brand recognition. Software would have to be the start, but their ecosystem still leaves a lot to desire, at least for the customer category interested in said flagship market. Maybe when all the chromebook kids eventually grow up and start working, but then how many of them would have brand loyalty to Google’s first party stuff? Who knows…

Hopefully they pick a territory and stick with it, or make switchups more predictable. If they choose to introduce a smaller model midcycle or a foldable, it'd also be great. But they shoot themselves in the foot every year due to inconsistent marketing and botched availability globally. North America is clearly not a big enough market for their sales, they need to properly expand.

This is all cool, yes, but I actually liked the old approach they took. I personally am using a Pixel 4a and for the price it's awesome. Battery life is amazing, I once didn't charge it for two days with 4h of screen on time each day, a lot of which was video streaming and I ended up with more than 30%. The size is also a point as I prefer smaller phones, which the new Pixels really aren't anymore either.
Also I don't like the shinier design aesthetic, loved the unibody plastic. That weird camera array is ok, but I liked that they were different than everyone in that regard

They need to stop making so many hardware mistakes, which it seems like if they were using buyers as beta testers, and consistency on a medium-term plan for their phones. If they do that, they could be the best Android brand, especially because they already have ticked on many important boxes. For example, if they release an expensive premium phone this year, next year it should cost less but it would, and should, maintain in line with their next couple of phones in the years to come; mostly if they want to expand their market to people who can't afford, or doesn't want to spend lots of money on, expensive phones. Oh, and availability on more countries.
