Honestly, I found somewhere over the rainbow very easy. The only hard part was getting the bob-omb to open the cannon, which should the been done during the red coin star, but the rest was a breeze.
@@madman00 Yeah, the 100 coins here was harder for me than the carpet ride. Also, #1 hardest for me was Tick Tock clock 100 coins. I played that for days before getting it. i would say the top 3 are all 100 coin runs: #1 Tick Tock Clock, #2 Rainbow Ride, #3 that damn death slide in little big mountain.
I agree about most of these but there's 2 that I feel like you missed out. Blast Away The Wall. I had absolutely no clue about which wall to cannon into to and tried everything. Watch For Rolling Rocks. I watched them, avoided them, and then went straight through the door into the next room. When I first beat the game I was stuck on 118 stars for years until I used a guide to locate these 2 stars. They're really easy if you know where the star is located but for casual players and beginners to the game I feel like these 2 are the hardest stars.
"You can use the B button to help control your flying." I've had this game for more than 25 years. I've 100%'d it more times than I can count. I consider it my favorite game ever made. This is the first I've heard of this.
The intro to every single star on this list is 12 seconds of the exact same thing. That literally means two minutes of this video is just the lakitu flying around, which already feels like it takes forever at the beginning of the game itself.
agreed I usually dust this game off every few years and at this point theres really only 2 stars I find intimidating 1) Wing Mario over the rainbow 2) Star on Top of the haunted mansion, to this day I think someone just made a mistake in the games programming (like they forgot to put a path there) and this is just the workaround
Imo the single most annoying part of SSL is the insta-death quicksand. Regular Quicksand? Bad, but manageable. That one bird? Can be avoided a few ways. Hell even the block things aren't that bad, the only reason why those, the tornadoes, that one pillar, the shy guys and even the bad camera work is all annoying because if you even look at that Quicksand too closely you just die immediately. Whoever got the idea to include that sand in the level needs to be put on a list
6:27 wait did I hear that right? That slowing down or STOPPING time are the best options for that star? Slowing down the time I can agree with but stopping the time all together makes that star almost impossible to get. Unless you’re some special speed runner god, you’re gonna need those arrows to move
That confused me too. Even in the video, the arrow isn't moving and I was thinking "how is he going to get over there?", and of course it didn't show it.
It is quite fitting that "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" is commonly considered the hardest star, since it is pretty much the last star in the game, at least out of the stars that actually have names.
The star I have had more trouble with on this game than any other star is Tiny-Huge Island 100 coins. Most of the coins are put in risky spots. The coins are easier to get when the Island is huge making Mario look small. But when the Island is small making Mario look taller and bigger, that's where the real challenge comes to play. Enemies are in risky spots and one missed timed jump will make you fall to your doom.
On my last 120 star run, this was probably tied with Tic Toc Clock 100 coin as the star I spent the most time trying to get. I only bothered getting 20-ish coins as big mario, so I had to get the red coins to get to 100. I have yet to understand why so many youtubers (not this one tho) hate water levels, when these abominations of levels are literally right there.
Some of these stars are indeed very easy once you've played through SM64 a few times. But others are super frustrating every time that I just want to do them as soon as I can to get them out of the way.
They basically did that with the DS version of this game. The other characters have different movesets and they added new areas to most levels as well as a few new levels for unlocking the characters.
For me the hardest star was the one you put at #2. It's like the hardest star also with the biggest punishment for losing. The only thing harder for me in the game (which isn't a star) is the final Bowser battle. The first two bombs are easy but getting the 3rd one was so hard.
i didn`t grew up with M64 and it was the 1st time, i really played through the worlds on the 3D all Stars Collection. The first 30-40 Stars were okay, but than i`ve enough from the game. Bit to challenging for me, i played through Odyssey and this game was perfect for me. Flying in this game is a pain and this rainbow world was one of the worst worlds, but i didn`t like shifting land, tick tack and lava land either.
Replaying through Mario 64 for the first time in years a lot of it was considerably easy, however, I nearly admitted defeat to 100 Coin Tick Tock Clock, it was extremely difficult to get all coins when the speed can only be one thing at a time and speed can make some portions considerably harder/easier. A lot go maneuvering and stuff is definitely required. (I say this as a casual player, nowhere near a Super Mario 64 expert like some of my friends, looking at you Nathan)
i was always really good at the rainbow level but the clock level was tough for me. i think the rainbow level you need more speed and the clock you need more patience
Honestly, the red coin star in BITDW is harder than the one in BITS. There are more jumps that require precision platforming, which is pretty fucking difficult in SM64.
Nice list I only disagree with #8 because making wall kicks are easy for me and #1 because the cannon shot is a lot easier thanks the rainbow ring other than that I agree with your list
This isn't a knock against you but it's hilarious how many times I see people forgetting that #2's name is Wing Mario Over the Rainbow (also known as That Cloud Stage)
Im surprised dire dire docks 100 coins didn't make the list when you are at the end by that water tornado if you get sucked in you got to start all over!
Never had issues on somewhere over the rainbow, its slow and tedious, but i don't think i have ever died on it. Difference of opinion, for me, 100 coins on rainbow ride is the worst.
Just recently got the 120 stars for the first time ever and in over 20 years and I gotta say: Stomp the Thwomp was my hardest star. if I am not mistaken it is impossible (without cheating/glitchig) to get the star at a stand still. And I fell off the fucking conveyor belt right before the star 3 times. You can get the 100 coins there at a stand still if I are good at doing a sidewards jump + wall jump to get to the top level. But Stomp the Thwomp is an asshole. EDIT: Apparently it is possible to TripleJump + Wall Jump up to it but just finding that out without googling it speaks volumes. The last bonus level I gotta say was from a how-to-do-it perspective not that hard. Yes, that you respawn outside is shit but once I had the plan to just shoot myself around inbetween the two cannons I think I only needed 1 try. The wing cap one was worse but at least you can immediately re-enter it. I fully get your complaint about Rainbow Ride. But I would say that all "get higher" stars there unify to be one difficulty ranking because from my experience once you have lost your mind getting a few stars there you memorize the level enough to pull your jumps better off. For the 100 stars there I floated up the castle, got the stars there, then jumped down to the frame with the red coins, with of course you can easily mess up. Then I did the lower area and ten the ship for he last coins. I would say: 1. Stomp the Thwomp 2. Rainbow Ride = Castle, Ship, Island, Triangle, 100 Coins 3. Shifting Sand Lands: 8 Red Coins, 100 Coins because the quicksand is so easily touched 4. Dire Dire Docks: 8 Red Coins, 100 Coins both because the boxes you spawn at the dock are so shitty moved on with the camera 5. Tiny Huge Island: 8 Red Coins as the cave floor is slippery and I very open just missed the edge with the siidewards jump to the last coin 6. Wing Cap 8 Red Coins 7. Follow the Sting Ray, terrible controls where you easily reset the rings 8. Chest puzzle in Dire Dire Docks because of the whirlpool 9. 8 Red Coins in Tall Tall Mountain because of the tiny mushrooms 10. Building a snowman because I needed to look up that the snowball will only connect if you stand behind the other one.
For me, playing the 60 FPS wide screen hack on the 351P, using a lower quality stick with drift + the camera being controlled with the other the BIGGEST pain was probably to get 100 coins in the giant/dwarf world (the name escapes me atm) and the carpet level (worst part of that being wall jumping up to the blue coins in time with a broken stick; I think the wall jumping is fine but not when the stick drifts). With a non-exact stick + camera issues those levels SUCKED. #9 wasn't that great either but luckily a short level. I see now why those metal 64 sticks go for sick money. Edit: #4 also not easy but actually easier than the other ones mentioned to me. Managed to get 120 stars WITH drift and camera issues... I think that speaks to how good the developers managed to get the controls. Camera is a different story... Edit 2: oh and the one in the pyramid (called "puzzle" something) sucked with a broken camera/stick as well.
Number 1 is completely wrong. The number 1 choice should’ve been just simply talking to Toad next to Hazy Maze Cave, on the second floor of the castle and the one right next to Rainbow Ride and Tick Tock Clock. I mean seriously getting through the text and dialogue and then getting a free star? Man such a pain am I right?
There's no hard stars in sm64 except for noobs bro you don't wanna play sm74 if u say vanilla sm64 is hard even when I first played sm64 these weren't even hard
Do you guys agree with my list of the 10 Hardest Super Mario 64 Stars? what stars gave you the most trouble?

Is it true? Does the B button help control your flying? I completed this in 1996, but I haven't completed it since.
The intro to every single star on this list is 12 seconds of the exact same thing. That literally means two minutes of this video is just the lakitu flying around, which already feels like it takes forever at the beginning of the game itself.
I noticed that immediately too
Came here to say exactly that. It would be fine for number 10 or 1 but not every single one.
Also, the star in haunted mansion that ends up on the roof. That was such a pain
It's far harder on the switch than it was in the N64 version, due to slightly changed controls and some nerfed movements.
@@jonathanstark9147 i agree the switch makes it harder then the ds
agreed I usually dust this game off every few years and at this point theres really only 2 stars I find intimidating
1) Wing Mario over the rainbow
2) Star on Top of the haunted mansion, to this day I think someone just made a mistake in the games programming (like they forgot to put a path there) and this is just the workaround
I got the star quickly and I’m in switch, I’m probably just lucky but yeah it is ominous.
Nah it’s east as hell I got it first try
I don’t think people hate on Shifting Sand Land enough. The tornadoes messing up your jumps, the quick sand…. THE 100 COINS
wing cap cheeses the whole thing

I like the tornadoes. As a matter of fact, you can use them to get all red coins in 0/0.5 A presses.
I think that the cryptic stars that you would never find without a guide like Watch for Rolling Rocks and Blast Away the Wall deserve a mention
6:27 wait did I hear that right? That slowing down or STOPPING time are the best options for that star? For me it's the complete opposite, I litteraly cannot complete the 100 coins star if I don't stop time. If it moves, I'm not able to do that star
It's kinda easy, knowing the sheer amount of 10 coin boxes there is in the level
probably the greatest game of all time
Without a guide it would be very hard to know that getting a faster time on peach's slide would give you another star.
I would say that The Big Penguin Race was possibly the hardest one I've ever done.
I always wondered why wall jumping has to be so difficult to perform
It is quite fitting that "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" is commonly considered the hardest star, since it is pretty much the last star in the game, at least out of the stars that actually have names.
Took me 20 years to get the coin star on tick tock clock. Finally broke down and used a guide.

It became easy for me when I found out you can ground pound the large goombas for blue coins.
You can get all 100 coins when you’re small, lol
Do the slide first then collect the rest of the coins. Much easier
