Dude! After experiencing the same frustration for over an hour, I tried what you did, and it worked! Can’t believe it, but it really worked! Thank you so much!
I had to remove the control valve actuator and pry the clip in. Then I wrenched it back and started the engine and fell into place. That last tip really worked. Thank you!
Yep - this is the trick. Thanks for posting this! Surely saved me a lot of time, I was done in 15 minutes (it was still annoying positioning it just right to fall into place)
Thank you so much for this vid. I ordered the clip for my car after getting suprised w this lawnmower sound. I just got my f30 a week ago w tons of compliments from coworkers. This issue just presented itself today in front of all my coworkers too embarrassing me . Regardless to say even though I ordered the clip I knew I couldn’t live with that ungodly sound so I wrapped tie wire and crimped it to have enough tension to securely hold it open for now. Honestly I did such a good job I can leave it as is but I already ordered the clip off Amazon anyway thanks for the good explanation. I’m contemplating sharing with TH-cam how I wrapped the tie wire which costs perhaps 5cents worth for a semi permanent fix.
Man, I was getting so pissed until I saw this. Got it wedged in there and turned the car on! Thanks for letting us non-mechanical types figure this out!
Thank you for this video, I was also having the problem where the clip was not lined up, after lining it up the best I can and starting the car up it popped right in, you saved me a lot of time.
Just did this on my wife's car. Got the exhaust side in and the actuator side into the crease as much as I could and it popped right in. Failed the first couple tries but I was doing it in the dark and the first couple weren't lined up quite right. Solid tip 👍
TopTip!!!! Worked just like you said. I was a bit concerned which direction the valve would turn because the engine was cold. On yours the loop of the clip seemed to face up with a downwards travel and on my car it looked the opposite. I think it’s just a 180 deg. Orientation of the unit fitted on the exhaust. My car is an M240i for reference to anyone else with the same question. Many thanks for gaining a few hours of my life back!
The exact same thing happened to my F30 and the clip would not go in so my mechanic did exactly like you did, connected one side then as soon as we started the engine it went into place. Great video.
I love attending the university of TH-cam lol I learn so much, I wonder how much bmw would charge for this, I just bought a 2019 330i and it makes that same noise on start up but goes away after idle I’m gonna try fixing it myself thanks
Can’t thank you enough for this video. I tried all kinds of things… via forums and other videos but nothing worked. One suggestion was to force turn the actuator to match the valve on the exhaust. DONT DO THIS… ended up destroying the actuator.
I snapped one of the bolts to get the actuator off. That wasn't going to happen so I spent 45 minutes trying to get it in by hand. No dice. Did this and bam it went in.
Open. I had to think about it. 🤔 It closes when you first start the car, as you can see in the video. But it can only go one way, so you don’t have to worry about putting it on incorrectly.
For future ref....you need to unbolt the actuator with a 10mm wrench(2 or 3 bolts depending on the model)and remove the unit. Then slide the clip in and hold it in place while you put the actuator unit back in place. Great vid though.
@@briandejesus4902 naw that shit was burnt out. ended up welding the valve open. didnt feel like replacing actuator. $40 to weld from a friend took 2 minutes smh. and other shops wanted $100 plus to weld
@@that_jamesguy mine is a mix of the door locks, center console rubbing on the drive shaft, and the hand brake lines also rubbing on the drive shaft. Next time I got to my mechanic and I can get under the lift I'll zip tie those. Bootmode the flap so it's always open and that problem is solved lol.

Took me 10 minutes thanks to your video. Turning the car on to engage the actuator was a super smart idea!

As you can see from the video it was 100% fluke! Happy to see it’s also working for everyone else!
The starting the car part really helped it fall in place I was so frustrated b4 thanks for the tip!

I too struggled with this for quite a while. Your method worked flawlessly. Thanks for the advice.

Thanks James. Very helpful 👌
Hey james, have a 2012 BMW 328i. Had the exact same issue a couple months ago.

Hi may I ask where I can order this clip?thank so much
is the valve supposed to be opened or closed when you first install the clip?
Open. I had to think about it. 🤔

Thankyou 🙏🏽
My actuator doesn’t move at all with the car on . I’m so confused
Might need to switch it to sports mode and back to comfort mode and it might move it for you.

I just got this sound and I swear I thought it was rod knock.
Yup - it sounds pretty tragic.
