    This video nicely sums up my feelings towards her and why I haven't bothered to pick up the game. I loved the game play of the first game but found the characters and the story an absolute slog to get through and the constant portrayal of all the spiritual and religious characters being nuts and corrupt was aggravating. Meanwhile Alloy is the clear-headed, logical science-driven naturalist heroine of the piece. It's hard not to feel like the developers aren't beating you over the head with their world view. Alloy's pushiness and the way she forces herself on everyone in order to "do the right thing" reminds me a lot of Rey and other modern female characters these days. Hard pass for me.

I actually appreciate that a great deal, Peter it's clear that you carefully measure out and consider the characters and the story and context in a way I no longer do. She goes fine. Then to the person in her way she goes off. seemingly to her death. They don't know she has special knowledge and doing the thing is not impossible to her.

    There's similarity between Aloy and Michael Burnham in Star Trek Discovery. I have never played an AAA video game where I skip almost all of the cutscenes like HFW, especially the side missions. The main story's premises itself is kind of problematic for me, it is not as clear cut as the writer seems to want us to think it is, and it really is bothering. I still played like a good 300 hours on this game, mainly to upgrade all the legendary weapons. Once I completed all those, this game lost all its replayability values.

      Yeah, I think I can see what you're talking about. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! -Paeter

  • @craig4002
    @craig4002 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Oof, realised that's definitely something to look out for in any media you engage in. Like that's exactly what happens in some fan fiction with "character bashing". Certain characters are written to be really horrible people so when bad stuff happens to them it feels justifiable or right. And I ironically watched an animated movie the other day where the "bad guys" I'm pretty sure were killed in the end:/.....yeah uh, what?!
    So I think it's good to be aware when things are either unrealistic or when they very obviously model principles that oppose what we know is righteous. I think it's tricky because you want to engage in the media and enjoy it, but also be wise about it. You don't want the media to train you to have a bad perspective on people and things.
    Another example is anime. The fact is, that is not how most people act, dress, look, talk or think. But because the media might have some aspect that attracts our attention, we don't always employ that separation between fantasy and reality.
    I think that perhaps practising that vigilance and awareness and wisdom is the best way to go about it. So taking a moment before, during or after engaging with the media/entertainment to gauge, dissect and figure it out. Ask yourself how it might be affecting you, for better or worse. Discussing with others also probably helps get a second opinion cause there might be something(a flaw or highlight) that you missed.
    Any other tips for being wise in this regard? God bless and all the best with the rest..

    • @christiangeekcentral
      @christiangeekcentral  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think I'd echo what you said at the end about discussing it with others. You can also go in reverse order. Instead of considering what sins a piece of entertainment might be leading you to commit, start by looking at your sin (as you and those those closest to you see in you) and then taking inventory across your entertainment to consider what things might bolster that tendency.
      I appreciate your thoughtfulness, Craig!

    No matter how much I love the game (still playing it today) I agree some aspects of her personality can be annoying and she can come off as an entitled prick. If the game had been self aware about this tendency, they would've included a dialog branch every time Aloy considers side quests that are so far removed from the urgency of the main story, where she basically says, "Sorry I have more important things to do (than to help a bunch of refugee cultists / than to find your senile dad / than to collect the seed pouches of your dead friends / than to play your stupid little board game / than to find parts for your stupid robot arm, Kotallo)."

    I have to disagree with this. Aloy's biggest character flaw is doing her lone wolf thing, which is heavily criticised by Erend, Varl, Petra etc. in the beginning of the game. From Aloy's POV, only one person understands the gravity of the situation, that is Sylens, who didn't tell squat about his plan to defeat the enemy, because he knows Aloy would not go along with it. Add in the fact the she is physically the only person who can restore GAIA (gene locked doors and stuff), she feels insane amount of responsibility. I thin Forbidden West did a great job of calling out Aloy's flaws and developed her character better, even more so than the Zero dawn

      Her childhood is definitely a major contributor, and that makes her issues understandable given what she has been through.
