      Yeah the devs are dedicated. The game is just super polished, optimized really well given how it plays on the OG ps4. They took all the gripes of zero dawn and improved on it. Not to mention the post launch patches/bug fixes. To complain about this game is pretty much looking a gift horse in the mouth. If you’re a fan of the series, you know how good it is. Otherwise, you’re just another hater…

    I think there are enough improvement in HFW like gliding, swimming, alternate weapon attack, signifant graphical leap, valor surges,combat arenas, new enemies required diferrent approach like wing of dreads that can disable Alloy's focus,lots of new controls customization (for good reasons) that justify HFW is different enough from its predecessor

    • @SuperThisWay
      @SuperThisWay  ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I think these are more minor enhancements rather than actual evolution of its gameplay. And some aspects don’t add a whole lot to it (the gliding is really only useful to break your fall rather than being a tool for traversal). Don’t get me wrong I still enjoy the hell out of of the game but I think HFW is an extension of zero dawn rather than a sequel that feels distinct and unique. But I also don’t think that’s a bad thing either

    For me HFW improved on a lot of things that HZD didn’t have since it was the first game. It happens with a lot of games. The only thing HZD has over HFW is the initial sense of wonder since no one had seen it before. I still remember the feeling I got when I first started playing HZD and it’s not something that a sequel can produce naturally.

    • @thecyanpanda241
      @thecyanpanda241 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Additionally no one seems to want to talk about the changes that allow for far more varied playstyles compared HZD, now you can specialize in melee(to some extent), trap based gameplay, bow gameplay, and the new way of using shredders. Back in HZD it was freeze machine, triple nock sharpshot bow, hit weak point, Profit.

    I just finished the game and I absolutely love it!
    Here's the thing. Games don't need mechanics that you never seen before. There are open world games, there are games with melee/bow and arrow combat, there are games with robots, there are games where you can craft, upgrade stuff, fly, swim etc. But there isn't a game that combines all these things in this specific way. What I'm trying to say is that games rely on more than just "new" mechanics.
    For example, there is a ton of metroidvania games, then why do people (including myself) love Hollow Knight so much? I doesn't offer anything new.
    I loved Zero Dawn and I love Forbidden West, and I want more games just like this so I'm afraid if the developers change the future game too much then it may lose the thing that people liked so much in the previous games.
    Sorry for the long comment I just thought this is the best place to share my opinion on this.

    I noticed this with my current playthrough of Zero Dawn. The game does so much right, but it released probably within one of the worst timewindows. It's also a pretty rough game get through if you're tired of the current political climate/culture. It was fresh in 2017, but in 2022, you just feel so done with it. Forbidden West is basically what many shows suffer from in their second seasons respectively. It had to deal with the intimidating task of following up its first groundbreaking game by expanding the world further, only to come out with a story that is slightly less compared to the story of its predecessor. Usually after that, however, the third game can pick it back up. Don't fail us, Guerilla.

    More of the same is what was great about HFW for me. Some of the puzzles and viewpoints changed in ways that sucked but the rest was more of what I wanted.
    What really worked for me was the story. We knew that it would be a lot of Aloy trying to rebuild GAIA and discover what awoke HADES. But the story added absurd elements that were interesting and still realistic enough within the world of the game. It kept me going because the bizarre elements kept me wondering, "Will this go over the line of absurd, or are they perfectly walking it?" For me, it was a little absurd, but in a good way. I genuinely look forward to the third game because it's set up just enough but still leaves me wondering of how it'll go.

    What made HZD a memorable game for me was the mysterious aspect of the story and how their world came to be. i think for the third game it’s best to keep things mysterious to make it more interesting. For example, simply removing the list of placeholders for the unknown machines makes me keep guessing as to how many machines could be out there that I haven’t discovered yet. Making the puzzles harder in the sense that there could be multiple ways to solve them, just like the real world, would be interesting as well. They should learn from Elden Ring in keeping thing in the dark unless you purposefully go out there and try to discover them, instead of spoon feeding the quest content and puzzles to you.

    I loved HZD and HFW ... but you're not really wrong. Horizon isn't reinventing anything, but it's the standard open-world formula done very well.
    I loved BOTW too, but it's hard for me to say it's better. Yeah, BOTW has a much more open sense of exploration and freedom. But really, BOTW's story is kind of mediocre and barely exists for most of the game, its NPCs are fun but basic, and what little voice acting it has is not great. (Which is fine-it's a Zelda game.) On the other hand, I was super into HZD's story, and I liked HFW's twist as well as the emphasis on NPC companions, both with an all-around great voice cast. Zelda and Horizon are just very different games with very different goals.
    I also think my personal experience of HZD/FW was helped a lot by the fact that they were the first real open-world games I'd happened to play. So I guess it was all new and amazing to me :).

    Where I think Forbidden West failed was with its story. Everything about the Zeniths rubbed me the wrong way. The whole Beta character arc left me feeling totally indifferent. And the biggest wasted opportunity for this game was what they did with Ted Faro. He’s a character we would all love to hate, and he would’ve been the perfect antagonist to set up for the third game. What were they even thinking??

    What I dont like that much is that most side quests play out very similarly. Most of the time people want you to return someone or something to them you follow tracks and at some point machines show up and you beat them up. Also grinding for the best gear is just insanity. Opinion on the rest:
    Main story was alright but not amazing imo. Combat is like the first game with a couple more toys but the combat system was already good in the first place so no complaints there. Aloys friends are definitely lacking some substance as they dont feel that important despite the whole thing with establishing the base and stuff. The world itself on the other hand is beautiful. That was already a strength of the first game alongside an awesome soundtrack. All in all I really like the game. The weaknesses are not that present and the setting and world do good job packing the whole experience up nicely. The game gives you not much chances to get your mind blown but does an at least decent job at most aspects. ( kind of what the video is pointing out.) For someone like me, who doesnt need fancy mind blowing stuff in the ways of gameplay it offers everything I could hope for.

    When I first saw this game in the trailer, i thought it looked good. When it went on sale for $15, I decided to give it a try. Thought it was a good game but confusing and the dialogue and story was all over the place. I was only able to understand it at the end. The characters are also very forgettable to me. I haven’t played forbidden west yet, maybe i’ll try it again when they make it go lower than 20 or find it in the bin somewhere to see what they improved on.
    Edit: I forgot that I played the game trial and the only thing i’ve gotten was that it had good graphics and was optimized well for ps5. Honestly they should’ve made this a ps5 only game and release it this year and I believe it would get it’s accolades that it wants.

    I think people bashing this game for not doing anything new and then praising Elden Ring, which is just Dark Souls in an open world, a premise which has been replicated many times over anyway, just not for Dark souls specifically, makes no sense.

    • @SuperThisWay
      @SuperThisWay  ปีที่แล้ว

      It all comes down to is feeling. Yeah all games more or less borrow from each other but the "feeling" of the game being unique is what people generally mean. HFW does do a lot what other open world games does but it doesn't necessarily make itself totally unique. Elden Ring is open world dark souls yeah but for people, there's something that clicked or made that game feel special.
      For me, I do love HFW. I thought it was a great game but it also doesn't feel too unique but that's okay too cause it's a super polished game

    • @sonicadv27
      @sonicadv27 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SuperThisWay Horizon's combat is one of the most unique in recent years. Forbidden West itself doesn't change this but that still sets it apart from most games releasing.
      I think what makes it fly under a lot of people's radars is the fact that, *on surface level*, it is just another open world game. One that gives the player as much or as little information as they want about how to proceed. But contrast that with Elden Ring, which forces that design mentality on the player, and suddenly it's regarded as a more unique experience.
      I think it's all about perception. I'm not saying i prefer one or the other but HFW feels more "unique" *to me* because i try to see past its open world formalities. I don't know of any other game with a similar combat system and most other franchises are exploring the tired medieval setting while HFW is taping into a post-post apocalyptic scenario we rarely see. Sure, it's executed within an oprn world formula we've seen too much of but i think that execution elevates the game compared to other open world releases of late.
      But hey, i don't want to sound like i hate Elden Ring, it's a great game. But to act like it isn't mostly more of the same is a bit disingenuous. Because there's nothing wrong with that.

    • @SuperThisWay
      @SuperThisWay  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sonicadv27 oh yeah for sure about the perception being skewed. That’s what I was getting at in regards to how people view HFW. I also don’t think it helped that Horizon and Elden Ring were released like a week or so apart (similarly with zero dawn and Breath of the wild), so people had a very quick and obvious thing to compare.
      I view HFW as an amazing game that has amazing mechanics and the best graphics of any game released last year. But I also like Elden Ring more bc I had a more fun

    The comparison to other open world games is right, but I don't think calling something generic is a fair criticism. It's only an issue if you're someone playing every single open world game out there like critics do, but the correct assessment from that should only be how the game compares to other versions of the genre. Moreover as a consumer, folks should learn to skip games, or quit if they're just trudging through a game that's only mildly entertaining. Makes it so the best iterations of the genre hits better. You don't have to play every single Assassins Creed, or Far Cry, or what have you. FOMO is a sentiment that gets taken advantage of in the gaming industry.

    • @SuperThisWay
      @SuperThisWay  ปีที่แล้ว

      Generic doesn’t equal bad. Generic just means that it’s not unique or specifically different from other games. Yeah yeah HFW is a unique game cause of its setting and robot dinosaurs. I just mean generic in that it’s open world gameplay and mechanics are similar to many other open world games.
      As someone who has played a lot of other games, I felt that generic feeling but I think HFW does what it does so well even if the feeling of playing the game is that it’s not unique or new

    This is a very interesting video. I totally agree to the extent that I'm actually worried about the future of videogames as a medium. The market is being flooded with games that would have stopped the world turning 5 years ago. They're all perfect, but not special. "Girlfriend reviews" illustrated it nicely by asking themselves; "explain the story of forbidden west".
    I enjoyed the game very much, and have no critiques...but it seems like "perfection" is becoming a dime a dozen.
    I'm exploring VR more because there is more room for innovation, I'm just worried that games, as a medium might head the same way as movies...

    They expanded in some way but took a step back in other ways. The open world feels more alive, The activites like machine strike are good. The side quests have much more polish and Higher production vaule. how ever things like Drones to take done really feel like Half assed filler. The side quests while good are pretty repetitve They follow the Witcher 3 Quest design of follow a track But the difference here that 95 percent of them end with a Machine Fight. The writting is Not Witcher 3 level and there are No quests that really branch or give you Different way to solve them Like In Kingdom Come. The World is alive but not as Alive or reactive and interactive as something like RDR2. The Exporation and discovery could be so much better for Game like This Compared with, Skyrim, Fallout3, RDR2, Witcher 3 and Elden Ring. This game is graphics Masterpiece and has set the bar for facial aminations. Its game that should really be a GOTY title But the Writting really falls apart and the open world while good could be so much better. combat is soild but enemies are take to many hits compared with the first. The horse riding feels stiff and the climbing really feels lacking, even though you can climb more the game is not better for it. The first game really stood out with its setting and was memorable but this game feels forgetable. Dont think this game in few years will be looked back on in the same way HZD has been.

    this game manages to be both enjoyable and insanely fucking irritating at the same time. half the irritation comes from aloy being a horrible main character. she was alright in zero dawn; i wanted to like her, in forbidden west she was plain annoying and unlikable. the combat either works or just doesnt. aloy gets stuck on shit, the camera freaks out, she gets hit by ANYTHING and is stunned for a solid 5 seconds, which results in you being chain stunned until she dies. the cauldrons are dull at best, the puzzles somehow manage to be easy yet strangely cryptic and frustrating because they take away half of aloys skills to make them work. i had the most fun with this game just exploring the beautiful world and ignoring quests and fighting whatever i come across. the difficulty makes no sense, i played it on the harder difficulties for a long time and the difficulty itself is FINE, but the fact that you get jackshit for drops in hard mode makes zero sense. the machines are tankier, thus your fights last longer and you require more resources, and in return you get LESS? upgrading shit is already an endless (and pointless) grind. no thank you lmao i really do hate this game mostly because it easily could have been much greater than it is.

    One thing to illustrate something (and I'm kind because you don't really deserve this comment, just a little bit): you can disable the looting animation in the settings.
    Why the heck should a game (first of its franchise or even the sequel) re-invent a genre? I don't want it to be that innovative. I want to get high quality for my money, not a new experiment I won't enjoy.
    It's like you (and many others) criticise a car because it still has four wheels and steering wheel and front&back lamps and windshields and horn and and and.
    Sorry, please go on.

    • @SuperThisWay
      @SuperThisWay  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah yeah I got my fair share of comments about the looting animation tho tbf that was in an update.
      And as far as the sequel criticism, I said in the video that even tho HFW didn’t reinvent the wheel, it didn’t matter cause it was still fun af. There’s even a line in the video stating “even if this game is nothing new, HFW is a complete package.” That’s a pretty high compliment for this game!
      I think it’s totally okay to criticize about if a game is or isn’t introducing new concepts or mechanics. I also think it’s totally okay to enjoy this game even if it plays very similarly to many other games.
      This game rules and I think a lot of people are totally getting hung up on the “generic” part of the title when they completely missed the “masterpiece” part. This is a great game. Yeah some people are not gonna be totally into it cause they’ve played something similar many times before but I still think this is a great game

      @@SuperThisWay :) Just having a conversation. I see it everywhere. I really wonder where this bullshit come from: that "this game has nothing new" or "has no new mechanics"?
      Who thought that, in an action-RPG, anyone would need new mechanics? I don't need new mechanics. New mechanics would piss me off.
      I need THESE mechanics.
      • Don't drop crafting. Crafting is a simplified form of the thing of "MAKING THINGS" from real life.
      • Don't drops the skill tree system. Skill tree system is a simplified form of "CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT" from real life.
      • Drop what? Fight? Weapons? Long and short range? What should they re-invent?! 🤦‍♂
      Okay, re-invention: make 4D games. It's fun. 4D action-RPG. You will hate it. Great! 40 million dollars into a game everybody hates. 👏👏👏 (Okay, that's HZD's budget if I'm not wrong.)
      So it's a bullshit criticism what is based on some reinvention aspects. It's like we criticised every single movie with that "it gives nothing new but makes things better", by the way, Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back was a refined and extended version of New Hope. It may surprise you.
      They made the terrain better, in Horizon Forbidden West.
      They made the weather system better.
      They made the lighting better.
      They made the water better.
      They made the music better (or, different, still the best).
      They made the mocap and face-cap better. Made the story-telling better.
      They made everything better, and continued the story. What's the problem with it? Who needs anything else?!
      Btw, what I really palm my face out, is that Zelda thing. I can't get that game seriously. It's like the early pitch version of Horizon Zero Dawn. A joke, it's like some high school talented developer kids had enough time and money for making something. What about that thing's re-inventions? Never mind, I'm just mumbling. 😂 🤦‍♂

    I played Zero Dawn, and then went to Forbidden West,and had plenty of fun starting it....
    Not so much by the middle, and then, after finishing the game and doing a little more side stuff, I just uninstalled it.
    There were new things, just not enough, and most I either didn't really wish for or didn't like. For example, that weird thing that happens with your mount whenever you get within fifty feet of a settlement. Or how you need to get extra parts to complete overrides, meaning alot of useless farming. Or the dozen or so new abilities, to counter the bull### amount of Apexes, which are all just tank versions of normal machines which you cam never override.
    And they're everywhere. You might not even find a single member of their packs to override, in many occasions. Your farming is even more useless.
    The side content is very good at the start, and kept me motivated, but the story.....
    The story is a heap of confused ### by the end of it. I can't stress this further. Immortals? Giant AI composed of narcissistic human minds coming from outer space? Billionaires escaping our planet for greener shores?
    OK, that last part is more believable, but the logical result would be failure, even if they hadn't exploded on launch like they said in the Old game. You know how far that planet is?
    Of course, the solution is Immortality juice!
    The villains are not compelling in the slightest. I'd prefer Hades to these folks any day, and he's a talking computer with charisma levels of below zero.
    Elden Ring......
    I ain't even gonna talk about Elden Ring. If you've played it, you probably know what I'm gonna say. I thought I knew open world games, and then I played this. Maybe it's because i had never played a Souls game, but I think, with respect, that Horizon as a franchise is a drop in the bucket compared to this game. It isn't fair to compare them. Guerrilla Games is a company with big and very good aspirations, but they're just starting this franchise. It ain't fair to compare Forbidden West to the Heir of years of Soulsborne art in gaming, coalesced into a single package and made into even more.
    That is pure insanity.

      I thought the story was serviceable BUT they struggle making both the A and B stories compelling (the Gaia/sci-fi stuff vs the present tribes conflict). Idk I thought this new gods as villains concept was pretty neat but like they didn’t really get much screen time for me to care or feel threatened by them.
      And don’t worry, I got an elden ring video in the works :)

      @@SuperThisWay Yeah, but the thing is, I think the part about sci fi God men rich as ### broke a fundamental part of what made Horizon's story so compelling.
      Do you know the funniest thing about Ted Faro?
      He isn't some mad genius. No big villain. He was a college washout with the biggest mound of cash in the world and the arrogance to think that made him smarter than actual experts in what he did. He was greedy, selfish, deflecting, but most of all, he was disgustingly human. So much so, you could actually imagine him as a real person out there, a rich fool just waiting to introduce some grand new ###y idea to the world.
      Sound familiar?
      The way the Zeniths are presented, as all-powerful beings with not a single care in the world ready to just clean out their fellow men like rats in the kitchen. That's not what we're looking for. Even Tilda is an F-grade yandere of some sort who just wants a new sex toy in the shape of her former girlfriend.
      And let's not talk about Nemesis. The whole concept just....it boggles my mind. An advanced AI built out of human minds, which is somehow both advanced and suffering from actual psychosis,as in in the medical designation, because it keeps hearing their ### all the time in it's mind.
      Remember when we just had Hades?
      Hades was just a computer program. He was doing his job. Perfectly well, in fact. The only problem he had is that he had no such thing as context as to why he's doing this. He's a computer program. Programs don't have or need context.
      That's what's so perfect about him as a true AI villain. He's just that, an AI, not good ol' Skynet. A symptom of a broken system that may not even be sentient, and yet one that looks like some God of destruction to the people of the current world.
      The secret sauce to Horizon's story, like the best stories, had only three ingredients. Heart, mystery, and irony. Copious doses of sweet, sweet irony.
      We lost at least the last two of those three.
      Looking forward to your video on Elden Ring. What did you think of it?

    everyone plays horizon games for the good story and fun gameplay i dont understand why everyone criticizes its open world

    • @SuperThisWay
      @SuperThisWay  ปีที่แล้ว

      The criticism stems from how open world games generally “feel” the same and have very similar mechanics (conquering tall structures would fill a portion of the map, side quests are all the “same,” etc). I don’t think HFW is a bad game bc it’s like many other open world games but it has a generic feeling to it. HFW is a great game even if it’s generic

    Unpopular opinion but I really didn't like how they portrayed Aloy in this game, she comes off as unlikable and unrelatable compared to the first game. She's cold to pretty much everyone around her and seems annoyed the moment someone or even a friend tries to talk to her. She also complains about everything while talking to herself.
    In the first game she was interested in building relationships with other people since she was an outcast for the majority of her life, and in this game she pushes everyone away with the blatant "strong woman" attitude.
    I really don't like how everyone, especially the men, seem so damn incompetent compared to Aloy.
