Reaper: Probably had a dorkier name based on his last name at one point but actually did something useful, so they gave him the cool name once he proved he wasn't a fuckup.

Goat: Made the mistake of telling people he was religious. Also probably from someplace where people get stereotyped as fornicating with their farm animals (I think that's actually referenced in the movie come to think of it).

Portman: His nickname would have got the movie an NC-17 rating.

I was a little thicker at the time, but could still squeeze through the "hell hole" in a Bradley in roughly 2 seconds.

Compared to that, this movie is more doom than doom.
I personally liked the first Doom movie. It was a good popcorn flick and I never get tired of watching it every time it comes on.

Doom is the timeless tale of the lengths one man would go to avenge his pet rabbit. And would have been a better movie dammit.
John Wick but it's a bunny and demons instead of dog and mob.
Doom is actually the story of one Punished Marine on guard duty on a backwater Assignment that has nothing better to do because he can't fly the escape ship out to go home. The pet rabbit thing as added in as a joke in a later version that added an additional episode (Ultimate Doom).

When it was announced in 03 they were finally going to do it, after some HUGE stop and starts... I mean at one point they were going to make it for 100 million at Tristar with a PG-13 rating, and there were rumors of having Tom Berenger (The Sarge from Platoon!) as Doomguy. It was so far along that they had demon maquettes built. They looked like Doom monsters through the prism of Todd McFarlane. But then Columbine happened and ruined that...
So the first wave of press for this movie starting in 2003 indicated a PG-13 rating, the movie was set on an "alien" planet called Olduvai, and the marines were going to be some kind of tactical swat guys. Olduvai, in the script, was actually Earth after some horrible apocalypse, and humanity had actually evacuated to another planet in another solar system. This was the big Planet of the Apes twist.
Basically they did a name change on the planet, the "swat" guys who were called "UACM (Union Aerospace Corporation Marines) were renamed to RRTS. I don't know why Hollywood thought that they needed to be anything but space marines... You'd think if they could take so much time to come up with a new fake name for the grunts, they could take some time to write better characterization. They were originally supposed to be dressed in the same kind of armor you see Doom 3 Guy wearing, but they decided for the more generic Seal Team 6 look. Which was boring.
That scene where Sarge uses the minigun on the horde of zombies, one of the few instances where the movie sorta feels like the game... At all... Is not in the theatrical release.

In an article I remember reading in a film magazine back in the day basically made the same arguement for Doom that was made later for AVP. Because it's "monsters" you don't really need an R rating.
The problem, of course, is that said monsters usually do horrible things *to people.* and thus you need an R rating to give this shit some weight.

Hollywood didn't have to do anything to this damn movie. They could have literally copy and pasted the story of Doom hell (no pun intended) why not mash the stories of Doom 2 and Doom together! They would have made a great movie. Of course... no. Apparently experimenting with teleportation and accidentally opening a portal/slipgate/resonance cascade into HELL destroying the base in the process wasn't interesting enough.
I went to see this film in the Finnish premiere. Fun anecdote about that. The audience in the theatre was about 99.9 percent male. I saw two or three ladies there - and especially one of them looked like she had no idea what her boyfriend was dragging her into. As we waddled into the seats, the pre-movie ads start to play. Around those times the ads still used to be targeted somewhat based on the demographic the films were designed for - so you can understand the big, spontaneous laughter erupting from the entire audience when the lady hygiene products started parading in the pre-DOOM ad reel.
The best part of this DOOM film is definitely the score by Clint Mansell. It's pretty much as close as you can get to that Bobby Prince MIDI rock style - while still sounding like it belongs in a big budget movie.
Clint Mansell and Rosamund Pike are two names that had no business being in this fucking movie. lol
Maybe the add was trying to show just how much blood those products could handle? It'd be a selling point for me!

that movie Hardcore Henry. they shoulda made the DOOM movie like they did that one and have actual demons in it. all first person action.

Honestly a good Doom movie would be something like Hardcore Henry or John Wick. Just over the top violence for a good portion of the movie.

Even though Doom 2016 is about ripping and tearing it has way more interesting science than the entirety of this movie.
Both where good, but your comparing a game to a movie, if you compare doom 2005 to doom 2019 then that would make sense, if you compare doom 2016 to doom eternal then that would make sense, but if your taking things we see in the games and not see them in the movies then I would understand what you're doing there
I actually hate the whole argent energy subplot (plot device?). In the original games Hell was _the_ Hell, with demons and magic. In the new games Hell is just a parallel world where the demons are just a glorified genetic experiment, and there's no magic, just *_argent energy_*. BORING!!!

If humans were to find anything magical, they'd probably try to figure out how it works, and in the case of argent energy, they've defined it as a form of energy. It gives a reason to why scientists are even interested in exploring and exploiting hell, and the genetic experiments are good enough reasons to why the demons have human made weaponry (take the mancubi's cannons or the revenant's jetpacks for example)
Personally, i actually like the rock as an actor, cuz he really does look like video game buffman, works in cheesy action movies

Maybe, if the Hardcore Henry director had Doom to work with, a Doom movie might’ve had better highlights.

I have fond memories of this movie simply for the first person action scene. That one scene somehow made watching the rest of the movie worth it.

The movie had its moments, unfortunately it suffered from b-gradetinitus. The FPS scene was definitely the highlight.
After this movie three things happen: The BGF of the movie was introduced on sourceports and mods and it's called BFG10k(like quake 2), People still think that Doom takes place on Mars, but actually is on the moons Phobos and Deimos, and...We still will got a second non-related movie after all....yeaaaa...

Tbh if they called it anything besides "doom" I doubt there'd be much of an issue.. either that or you could think of it as one giant cutscene with 2 minutes of gameplay like quite a few modern shooters
What's especially funny is that "Event Horizon", which came out 8 years earlier, was a FAR more faithful "Doom" movie without even being associated with "Doom". THIS movie might as well have been an Alien sequel for how little it has in common with it's namesake! Just replace all the NOT-DEMONS with Xenomorphs and it be good to go.
thats how i feel about that old american godzilla movie (98?). if it was just some random monster no one would bat an eye. its not a masterpiece but its decent. but because its “godzilla” it fucks it up.

I just had an idea: what if ID had the guys of Hardcore Henry do a proper Doom movie? they got all the first person action with silent guy going on as well as the ultra violence, all they need is a bigger budget for the special effects, no big story script required even though they are now having this weird sort of "cinematic universe".
Just get rid of the fishcam and have normal cameras mounted. There's a reason why Hardcore Henry had danger warnings in theaters.

The new doom movie sucked, there are a lot of reasons why it did, but I grew up playing first person shooters and watched the doom movie from 2005 multiple times, Its been my favorite movie based off a game ever since, people say that if it didn't take the Doom name it would've been better, well in my opinion it was really good for a doom movie, others are saying hardcore Henry style would have been better but a movie about someone in first person isn't my kind of thing, in the games you play in first person but I don't want a doom movie just in first person

You're not too far off, actually. From what I understand, one of the producers of this movie was Evangelical and so forced the demons to be taken out of the script.
okay, I'm a Christian and all, but if you can't deal with demons being in the movie pick another project. No reason to bastardize the POINT OF THE GAME because of your "beliefs"
That was never substantiated. The screenplay that David Callahan wrote was never intended to feature demons. They were mutants in the first draft penned in 2003 before it was picked up.
So, a movie that features demons as evil forces of destruction that plague mankind and need to be eliminated is... somehow against Evangelical beliefs, apparently

The same thing happened to the books, though they were given to a Mormon Reaganite rather than an Evangelical. Not sure why Doom adaptations keep going to religious people who hate putting Demons in things lol. tbh I'm not sure why some have that issue... I've met many Christian gamers and each one has basically said they're cool with Doom because you're kicking the Demons asses.

Die Another Day was... fine? This movie was, It would have been good if it wasn't based off of DOOM. It was a bad DOOM movie but it was a decent Sci-Fi action film.
This film, Die Another Day and the LOTR films did nothing to help my constant confusing of Rosamund Pike with Miranda Otto back in the early 2000s.

This movie is a good example of what you get when the director isn't brave enough to deviate from Hollywood's safe and boring checklist of what every movie "must include" to appeal to a mass audience. A GOOD Doom movie would have about 10 minutes of plot followed by an hour and a half of run and gun demon genocide with periodic moments of suspenseful calm and pretty much zero dialogue to interrupt it, the "story" conveyed by the Doomguy's body language and the background scenery as the action unfolds. Alas, epic as such a Doom movie would be we're not likely to ever see it. :(
LGK it's frustrating because you could make a great Doom movie relatively inexpensively. The cast could be made entirely of unknowns, saving millions for the technical aspects like special effects, set design, direction, lighting, etc. Have just enough plot to hold all the demon-slaying action and suspense together, while also not getting in the way. Oh, and make sure the movie doesn't take itself too seriously, because you know... it's Doom. That does it, Sam Raimi needs to direct a proper Doom movie!
Because they want to maximize profitability, they dumb down the rating to "Teen" so they can rake in more dough, while failing to satisfy the target consumer, which is the fans of the video game.
Because any other moviegoer's money is as good as ours. Mass appeal is the name of the game -- except in the relatively new frontier of microtrannies: then it's mainly about harpooning those sweet, fat whales. Depends on the game, perhaps. I can see crowdfunding growing to involve relatively big budget movies. Such a movie as you describe can come about that way. Folk should always remain wary of crowdfunding, of course, not get their feet swept from under them by their own hype.
Hell, how was Hardcore Henry funded? And how much more would it imaginably cost to make that but with demons in a sci-fi setting, with sci-fi props? I do know good CGI costs a fortune. I wonder how much the FPS sequence in Doom cost. It's the highlight of the movie, but it's not downright good. Only when compared to the rest of the movie and the fact it's a novelty does it ever appear good. Case in point being it's got nothing on the actual games themselves. On second thought, I wonder how popular such a crowdfunding would actually be, when the best way to experience Doom is by playing it, as Doom 2016 has shown to a new audience.
