      I remember there was a console command you could use to increase the movement speed back up to what it was like in the first Unreal. As soon as you did that [would need to reenter it every level transition] the game became far, far better.

    I'm pretty sure the Flak Cannon has been scientifically proven to be the best shotgun ever put in a game.
    Also, this game was a console port. It's possible that the devs couldn't be bothered to change the console weapon swap system (probably the D-Pad) for the keyboard. That might explain the wierdness.

    • @Moonstalker
      @Moonstalker 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      To be honest it's not that weird but yeah the fact everything is split into 4 categories is probably because they wanted to port it to x box or something.
      Besides, Turok 2 who is an actual console shooter have 2x8 slots and some of the slots have 2 guns like the bow and tek bow, the pistol and mag 60 or the dart rifle and the tranq rifle or the talon and the wrist blade.
      But to be fair it wasn't that bad I mean all the close range guns were on 1 assault weapons were on 2. I think they wanted to do like half life with all the weapons in 5 categories or red faction who have all of them in 4.
      I think they could have separated them more and be more conventional about that, but whatever.

      The only real contender here could be the Ironblast from Guncaster (an utterly ludicrous 8 barrel pump-action shotgun with ludicrous firepower and equally ludicrous recoil, that's very satisfying to use).

    I don't recognize this game as a sequel to Unreal. Unreal was a journey that I'll remember forever. Unreal II was... a game. It had nearly nothing in common with the feel of the first one in my opinion. There's the Skaarj shoved in, but that feels to me like a cameo in a different game than like an Unreal game.

      I'm so glad I skipped this one. When Civvie said that that's the fastest the character goes, I just laughed. That's like a major faux pas that disqualifies this game from being an Unreal game. The Skaarj are also unnecessary beefed up. They looked really cool in Unreal.

    • @MegaSmouke
      @MegaSmouke 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Maybe it's true with nostalgic feelings, but I've just played Unreal and Unreal 2 in the row. And Unreal 2 is so much superior than original one, it's kinda easy on normal difficulty but plays very well on Unreal difficulty. Also it looks gorgeous in 2K resolution with everything maxed out, actually looks much better than on this video, maybe because of video compression or because I've played patched version which I bought on GOG. That sad thing that Unreal 2 wasn't finished, game was just sold as is, because Atari happened.

  • @BigBoneBusiness
    @BigBoneBusiness 5 ปีที่แล้ว +151

    However fun or un-fun Unreal 2 was, there was something it did that I haven't really seen many other games do that I actually super enjoyed. It was an ultimately small thing that most people could have forgotten in mere moments of it happening.
    Dalton and Ne'Bon explain backstory/lore/whatever to the player in what would normally be seen as the opposite way around. Ne'Bon comes up to Dalton and asks about all the weird names and stuff he hears that he knows nothing about. Dalton would obviously know these things and can explain them to him, out loud, in a way that allows the player to learn these things as well without having Dalton seem clueless.
    To contrast this, take Shepard from Mass Effect. Shepard is N7, the literal best of the best, he's flying all over space doing cool shit, shooting bad guys and interacting with aliens... but he didn't seem aware of what the Genophage was. Yeah, sure, humans have only been a part of the galactic community at large for about 30 years, but come on. They could at least give him a bullet point summary of super-important galactic events.

    • @papayer
      @papayer 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      that's not really any better since na'ban is an utterly annoying and boring character, not to the extent dalton is but still.
      oh and it's also INCREDIBLY fucking tedious.

    • @sorrenblitz805
      @sorrenblitz805 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Well honestly Shepard knows vaguely about the genophage, he knew it was a touchy subject for both Salarians and Krogans. Serving in the Alliance as a grunt until he made Commander, he probably didn't interact with too many extraterrestrials and thus didn't actually understand what the genophage was or why it was such a sore spot. Now him not really knowing his way around the citadel despite being an alliance officer and thus needing to be on the citadel every once in a while is the part where I agree with you.

    10:33 Unreal 1 is a great example of less is more - no one spoke english, all of the story is delivered via text (I think it's entirely optional to read), and every 'cinematic event' happened in real time. There were lots of memorable levels with fairly logical progression... I didn't realise the expansion was so fucked though.

    I didn't like Unreal II, when it came out, mainly because they completely got rid of the atmosphere of the first game and instead tried to make some sort of space opera blockbaster (similar to Halo, probably). Unreal was all about solitude and survival on a mysterius and hostile, but beautiful alien planet. And Epic Games managed to nail this aspect perfectly, in fact better than anyone else at the time. The second game didn't need all that bullshit cliched mediocre plot, chatty dumb characters, tired twists. Sometimes, less is more. I was so disappointed with this game that I bought GameCube, because of Metroid Prime series, which had some of that first Unreal vibe and atmosphere. And I must say Retro Studios did much better job than Legend.

Story wise, well, Halo is a cinematic story driven experience and Unreal has no dialogue, no backstory, next to no cinematics and tells the only story it has through in-game text which doesn't exist in Halo. One of the things that bugs me about Unreal 2 is its writing. The developers claimed that story was very important to them, since they were once an adventure game company. I can understand that, and i support the idea of an Unreal game with a more in depth story. It's just that the writing isn't as good or as deep as the writer or the developers intended it to be. A shame, since I think the writer wrote some of Legend's best early adventure games. They could've made Dalton and Aida less stupid. The story exposition cutscenes were very ill advised in their execution. The rest of Unreal 2's problems were due to an overambitious design goals that couldn't have been met, and level designers were more focused on background details than with the overall level design. There are so many ways Unreal 2 could be improved. Maybe as a mod. Your in-depth analysis, Civvie, is certainly helpful in demonstrating what didn't work in Unreal 2's design.

    • @Cephalopod51
      @Cephalopod51 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Indeed. I mean, Unreal did have a story to tell through its translator journals, and those journals still were better told than U2. Plus, the world of Na Pali just felt more developed and immersive than the multiple planets you visit in U2.

    • @nikital.6523
      @nikital.6523 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Well, even without the journals, Unreal manages to tell most of its story points: the Na'Li are oppressed by the Skaarj, the Prisoner eventually takes on their role as this sort of messiah to the locals (see also the relief in one the major temples), the whole journey - from the crashed prison ship and to the alien overlords' base topped with desperate escape on the stolen shuttle - all of it was coherent, masterfully woven together and didn't felt contrived. From deepest chasms to highest peaks, from villages to abandoned fortresses, from gritty high-tech mines to ancient temples, from crashed spaceships to islands floating in sky, Unreal is, well, real. As much as it was a technological marvel at the time (and still quite the looker to this day thanks to the aesthetics), it was more - it was what few games can truly provide - an aforementioned journey.
      Unreal 2 felt like a poorly put together sci-fi TV series with stock characters and plot that was jumping between places without much thought. It had quite a few nice ideas, a pair or so somewhat interesting designs, some nice tracks, but it was by no means a journey. As an aside - while I love gritty cyberpunkish 90s style of UT99, I can't help but feel regret that EPIC has dropped the mystical, even magical feel of original Unreal.

    • @nopushbutton
      @nopushbutton 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@nikital.6523 This is very true. Unreal manages to tell you, through gameplay and visual design, the main beats of the story even if you never read a tablet with your translator. This just makes it all the more interesting, and encourages you to find out more in previous playthroughs.
